As we await the others...

The invitation delivered last night was remarkably simple, especially given the importance of the occasion: “Start where it all began. Meet us at the Pig’s Paunch one hour before dawn.”

The Pig’s Paunch is a run-down building with a faded sign of a large pig standing on its hind legs, arms folded above a corpulent belly. Inside, the air is thick with the scents of human sweat, stale tobacco, and leftover food. In the center of the room, surrounded by inebriates sleeping off their revelries, a familiar elven man stands high upon top of a large round table.

“Welcome! Welcome, my students! Please, have a seat!” With that, Kreighton Shaine, the Pathfinder Society’s Master of Scrolls, nimbly drops down to sit cross-legged on the table before looking about the tavern with a sense of reverent wonder. “Can you believe it? It all started here years ago—well, over four hundred of them at least. Under this very roof the Pathfinder Society was born.

“But today! Today you will begin your Confirmation! Master Farabellus, Master Zey, and I all agree you each have shown your worth and dedication to the Society, so there’s no better time to see if you can handle becoming full field operatives. Allow me to introduce you to Janira Gavix,” he says as he motions for an excitable halfling woman to approach. She wears a large backpack and carries all manner of tools, pouches, and scroll cases around her waist. Shaine continues, saying, “Janira here will be going with you on your Confirmation. She was one of my brightest pupils and will no doubt be an invaluable resource on your journey, for she discovered the caves you are about to explore during her own Confirmation.”

Janira speaks up in an enthusiastic and cheerful voice, “Greetings, aspiring Pathfinders! Six months ago, while I was mapping cave entrances in the foothills of the Kortos Mounts, I witnessed a lone gillman entering a concealed cave. I thought little of it at the time, but I saw another one enter the cave again a month later as my Confirmation stretched on. A few days later, after I completed my assigned task, I entered the cave system, but was unable to find the gillmen.”

Master Shaine hops to his feet. “Initiates, for your Confirmation, you will travel to these caves to explore and document its many passages. Additionally, and most importantly, you are to learn what the gillmen are up to in there. Oh, and you need to come back alive as well.” With these parting words, the Master of Scrolls jumps off the table and strolls out of the building while humming to himself.

Before you set off, you are free to ask any questions you wish of your new guide, Janira.

"Good day, 'mate'," the tall half-Orc woman greets Castiel teasingly.

I'm imagining you with one of those really terrible half-Cockney, half-South African "Australian" accents that American actors do :-)

Addressing the rest of the group, she introduces herself. "I am Zlata, of... of Lastwall. Sworn Paladin of Erastil, protector of the vulnerable, defender of the innocent."

"Have we reason to think these gillmen are a threat?"

Janira contemplates for a moment before responding. "Gillmen are typically secretive, but not outright hostile. Though I am curious as to why they are going into the cave. Most live in or near water, so why are they going into this cave? That is what we are to find out!"

I can't wait to get this done so I can be a full fledged pathfinder!"

Arcana is a Plumekith and it shows. Like a bird, her amber iris' take up the entirety of her eyes. No white sclera is visible. That's not her most distinct feature however. She sits on a table with her back to the edge to accommodate the length of her massive, feathered, steel colored wings. Her tunic isn't so much a shirt as a short apron. Sleeveless and backless, it's a simple rectangle of grey cotton with three ties to keep it on. Her arms aren't entirely bare. Several large feathers lay flat against her skin and a pair of leather vambraces do very little to hide the daggers at her wrists. Although she's short and thin, her large wings and defined muscles make her look quite imposing, at least when she wants to.

Her wings quiver from irritation and she mumbles "I lost my good bow. If we get in a fight I'll try not to shoot you guys with this crappy one I found... What do we know about gillmen? Why's this cave special?"

Hello. An elf finally speaks up once the others have finished their greetings. How long will it take us to reach this cave? The elf wears plain leather armor and simple clothing otherwise. "It will take us all of today's daylight, so we shall be leaving shortly."

With a laugh, Janira turns to Teric. "Nothing so fancy, I'm sure. Our mission is to explore these caves and try to discover their importance to the gillmen, and if there are any still inside. By trying to understand them, we gain insight on how to interact with them... or something like that. Kreighton Shaine is always saying stuff like that. I don't understand half of it.

"I don't expect too much specialty gear being needed. Just your standard kits, some rations, rope, you must always have rope! And whatever odds and ends you think are required.

"Now, before we set off, it is imperative that we should get to know each other and review our plan. After all, the most important factors that determine whether an expedition will be a success are cooperation and preparation! I’ll go first!

Prothero looks around the dilapidated tavern with distaste, his eyes widening in surprise when he learns that this place is the origin of the Pathfinder Society. "Four hundred years?" he mutters archly, "it looks older than that."

He listens to the Master of Scrolls, and then Janira, explain what their task is, one hand unconsciously stroking his carefully groomed beard. He is is older than many Pathfinders of his low rank and dressed simply, in faded grey robes, his only extravagance a beautiful bow of black wood extending over his right shoulder. His coloring – the bronzed skin and brown hair – indicate his Taldan birth, and his neatly trimmed beard marks him as being of the noble blood of that land. But his calm, focused demeanor is very different from the typical scheming, simpering attendee of the court of Grand Prince Stavian III, and it is clear he has left that life behind.

"To date, I have spent my service to the Society in the jungles of Mwangi and the deserts of Osirion, it will be interesting to undertake a mission so close to Absalom," Prothero states plainly. He looks around at his fellow Pathfinders and introduces himself, "I am Prothero Crace, Taldan by birth but now devoted to the Society, as a more worthy cause than the petty intrigues of those who wish to sit on a taller footstool than their neighbor at the royal court."

With introductions in order, Janira sets down her pack and begins to pull out a few pieces of parchment. "This mission has everything to do with data collection and not about boldy putting yourself onto the blade of some goblin. Make sure you take plenty of notes on the caves and their contents. Now, we're all geared up, then? Rope, light, alchemist fire, all set? Yes? On we go!"

Janira then leads you out of the Pig's Paunch with an eager grin on her face. “Now, on to the details of the mission at hand. After reviewing my mission reports personally, Master Shaine believes it is no coincidence that each time the gillmen entered the caves it was during a full moon, so it is also no coincidence that you have been called here now, just a day before the moon is full again. We both believe that tomorrow night is our best chance to find out why these caves are important and what exactly the gillmen are doing in there.

“The caves we’ll be travelling to lie under the base of the Kortos Mounts. We’ll need to spend every minute of daylight possible to reach the caves by foot, crossing over the Cairnlands, taking the paths to Diobel, and finally making our way through the wilderness. With any luck we won’t run into any of the local inhabitants. Once in the caves, we’ll need to work together to explore and determine whether any gillman are present or have been recently. Keep an eye out for any other clues that might hint at the caves’ significance, too.

"Any further questions as we head out of town?"

This is the time to finalize any purchases you may have.

For those who have played this before, feel free to breeze over the box-text.

After a couple quick purchases, Janira leads the party out of the city and out into the open road.

Along the way of travel, rather speedy by her halfling-sized leg standards, she points out various landmarks such as long-abandoned siege towers, distant mountains, and distinct flora and fauna.

The first day passes without incident and you come to a point where you can make camp.

"The full moon isn't until tomorrow, and we've made very good time so far. Let's rest here and get started at first light tomorrow. Actually, an interesting story about setting out at first light. Did you know that as the sun rises, there is a reaction which occurs in our brains that makes us..."

Thankfully her ramblings are cut short as the day's rigors catch up to you and you slip into sleep.

-----------------------------------

The following day, Janira is quick to pack up her bedroll and get moving. Consulting her wayfinder, she points to the distance. "We're on the right path. We need to keep heading northwest past those rocks up ahead." Following her gaze, you assume that she must also mean the foresty area beyond that as well.

As you progress along the wooded path, a sudden rustling is the only warning to the presence of thousands and thousands of spiders coming at you from two different directions.

Quickly, Castiel is able to find a well-traveled path through all of the brambles and briars and saves the party valuable time in reaching their destination.

Sorry, have to step away from the computer for a tad. Will progress it shortly. Feel free to chat about.

In spite of his upbringing, Prothero has picked up some skill in survival in the wild, having led a party of pathfinders successfully across the Osirian desert. He's about to step forward and offer his help when Castiel's adept trail-finding makes clear how much more there is to learn. Okay, guess he's got that covered, he says to himself with a shrug.

The dense forest opens to a wide clearing at the base of a sheer cliff. Thick vines cover the surface of the cliff stretching 30 feet overhead. “Here! The cave entrance is behind those vines,” Janira says with a broad smile as she walks to the cliff’s face. She pulls back several layers of vegetation to reveal a narrow crack in the cliff’s surface. “This is where I saw the gillmen enter.”

As she motions toward the aperture, the surrounding woods come alive with the sound of small animals fleeing some unseen danger and a large creature crashing through the undergrowth. The halfling worriedly remarks, “Quick, take cover before whatever it is spots us!” As if she’d summoned the creature with her words, a massive horned monstrosity emerges from the trees. Standing eight feet tall on a pair of cloven hooves and wielding a tremendous axe, the bull-headed creature roars with unbridled anger when it spots the group.

Wisely assessing that a minotaur is beyond her charges’ capabilities, Janira screams, “A minotaur! There’s little chance we can stand against it. Take this bag,” she continues, pulling off her backpack, “and head deeper into the caves. Finish your mission. I’ll lead it away from the caves, lose it in the forest, and join you as soon as I can. Now go! GO! Fly, you fools! She heaves her backpack into the cave, casts a spell, and darts off toward the minotaur before turning to lure it away.

Janira's pack contains:
potion of barkskin, 2 potions of cure light wounds, potion of feather step, potion of vanish, scroll of entangle, scroll of gust of wind, scroll of identify, scroll of mage armor (CL 6), scroll of obscuring mist, wand of burning hands (CL 3rd, 4 charges), wand of cure light wounds (CL 3rd, 8 charges), acid, 2 alchemist’s fires, holy water, smokestick, tanglefoot bag, thunderstone, antitoxin, and 2 sunrods.

Heading into the caves, you find a narrow tunnel leading deeper. The passage twists and turns for several hundred feet before slowly opening to a wider passage. A large hole spans the cave’s width and stretches ten feet down the path. At the bottom of the pit lies a small bundle of cloth draped over several ominous looking spikes.

There appears to be no way around, so you must bypass it on your own.

"Convenient timing of that Minotaur, showing up right as we reached the cave. Maybe someone wanted to make sure we entered. I hope Janira is feeling fast..."

Arcana takes a piton, hammer, and rope out of her pack. She hammers the piton in the ground at the mouth of the hole and ties of the rope, then repels down.

"Someone lost some of their clothes. Any of you guys able to tell if this is a cloak of strangulation or somethin'?"

She throws the cloak up to her comrades.

I'll take an alchemists fire from the bag. I should also be able to take the bag without encumbrance penalties unless someone else wants it.

Err, 'draped' made me think of a cloak. I guess it could be something other than a cloak.

"I'm not sure minotaurs are quite that biddable, but you could be right, Arcana," offers Prothero. "In any case, I'm glad the cave was here to enter, and I hope Janira's all right."

He watches her climb down the wall of the pit, then says, "I'll set up a rope on the other side." He takes a few steps away from the pit, then runs up to it and jumps across to the other side. Once there, he pulls a length of rope from his pack and lowers it down, looking across the opening and saying, "You guys coming?"

It is, indeed, a cloak.

I could surely use that other alchemist's fire and the acid. It's kinda my thing. If there is no objection he'll grab the two items and stow them within reach (on the bandolier if they fit). So, how do we all get across? Jump?

Assuming we can take 10 Eldren will be able to make the jump easily.

Awww, but it's no fun if you don't roll ;-)
But yes, if you wish to take 10, you may take 10.

No I'm pretty much set on it being something other than a cloak now. I want magic socks. For any of our dex challenged members, a rope against a wall is only a DC 5. Is there anything else in the pit? Anything interesting about the spikes?

Then you shouldn't've assumed it was a cloak at first! Or something semi-existential or what-not.
And nope, nothing down here but you, the cloak which is a cloak, and spikes... lots of spikes.
