FYI - I have created the map of Thornkeep, and as I have time, I will create the keys to the labels. I will make this an editable document, so that you all can add your notes.
Jaender the Black |
Woohoo! Ready to do this!
GM Silbeg |
Location descriptions are posted (a google document that you'll all be able to edit). We'll keep this one around for all of the levels, and each of you should feel free to add your notes.
I'll just let this sit, and let you edit. When you first visit an area, I'll post a description, which will likely be reasonably brief. Use this as a way to document for yourselves where you've been and who you've talked to!
A lot of neat places to visit.
Also, you could go out and explore the Echo Woods... but, remember, that I am allowed to use the detailed random encounters. There may be a reason in your briefing why you wouldn't want to do that, though.
GM Silbeg |
FYI - on the maps for The Accursed Halls.
They are HUGE. And, of course, done in 10' squares. So, to make things easy on me, I am going to leave them in 10' squares... just when you are locating yourselves, place yourselves in one corned of the square. Should work out ok.
The rest of Thornkeep is all flip-mat sized. Much easier to work with!
And while I have posted the "map", you'll see nothing so far. :D
GM Silbeg |
Just a reminder, I have you all the "Thornkeep Locations Doc" where you can take notes on things you learn about the different locations in Thornkeep... such as names of purveyors, what the place is about, etc.
I've added a couple of things about the Greenforest Inn, as an example.
Jaender the Black |
Was just thinking about going back through our posts and filling in the pertinant details. I will volunteer to take on that task for now to catch us up... Just make take me a little while to do today, hopefully I can get some done at lunch.
Jaender the Black |
Arturo - Dive in wherever you want, I will check in before I start editing stuff. Leaving for lunch soon, will hopefully get a chance to add some things after I let the puppies run around and eat (and eat my own lunch...)

I totally get the feeling like we've just walked into one of those beginning towns in World of Warcraft. Freaking everyone and everything has a yellow exclamation mark above them! Hope we don't accidentally end up picking up a silver quest...
The most interesting handbill offers a reward of 500 gp for the rescue of Garhal Silvercrown or the recovery of his signet ring as proof of his death.
We get the reward if he's dead or alive? By the laws of adventure writing, this does not bode well for Garhal Silvercrown's chances of survival. ;-)
I feel Arturo has been talking a bit much screen time (mostly my fault, not his), so I'll leave it for someone else to talk to this fine lady first. If you'd rather Arturo speaks first, just have your character prod him forwards or some such.
GM Silbeg |
This is the Good Thing about running Thornkeep without a 4-6 hour time limit. Many times this is run at Game Days or Cons by starting at the gates of the Accursed Halls... and you don't get any chance to see what is going on.
I will let you know that there are lots of places you could check out, and lots of false leads! Some leads will also be for later levels.
Jaender the Black |
Just trying to continue to be weird, not giving up the sword though :) And if there was ever a character to scold it is Ophiuchus. Funny how we are cross scolding.
That exact thought crossed my mind, which is why I wanted to say something... :) I love the character, and I am impressed how you continually come up with ways to be weird. Cyrus started out like that, just trying to be as awkward as possible. Its obviously evolved, but that's what makes this fun!
GM Silbeg |
checking for taps all the way
Good to know Gunari has rubbed off onto another adventuring party!
Vox Banner |
I read both Arturo's post, then GM Silbeg's post, didn't catch the typo either time (because I'm a dumb dumb), and then thought, "when did I miss that Gunari is always checking for traps?"
Arturo the Swift |
I have also belatedly updated The Doc. I had to add in some locations to match the rumors we were getting. Feel free to edit wholesale any crap I've spurted out onto the pages!
GM Silbeg |
So used to this group's rapid posting that I am thinking I should bot Roudi or something... even though its only been an hour or so. Not gonna do it, but it just seems like I should.

Dude, I hear ya on that one. Sometimes waiting for 24 hours can feel like an eternity when most fights don't seem to last that long. Try putting in some more atmosphere as "everything moves in slow motion" or something like that. You know, if you have the uncontrollable need to post. ;-)
Roudantaimi |
Teh Internet was broken here.. I'll post in game thread once the kids are in bed
Jaender the Black |
Sounds good to me since I am the sneakiest... I am only a tiny bit ashamed to say I gamed the system last time, knowing I could change my level 1 character for free. I took a trait that let me have disable device as a class skill, and have since discarded that for something more useful, knowing that we would have Arturo joining our ranks.
So I would propose something like this. Jaender the scout reports anything he finds back to Arturo, who then takes whatever disable type action is necessary, and Ophiuchus and Jaender maintain the resistance chain.
Jaender the Black |
+15 at level 2? Wow? How?!?!
LOL :) I am surprised you didn't ask that during Crypt... it was +14 then....
2 ranks + 3 class skill + 3 Dex + 4 small size + 2 racial + 1 trait bonus (+2 more if it is hilly or rocky) = 15
Jaender the Black |
There was only a couple times, once right in the main entrance, and the only other time it mattered was trying to sneak under the bats. I think I engender I got nearly a 30 for stealth check, but still alerted them cuz they rolled really high. Otherwise I didn't need it much...

GM Silbeg |
For the "resistence chain", please let me know the order of the castings, and who is casting. Just so that I have something to refer to.
Jaender the Black |
Ophiuchus and Jaender will both cast. Order (unless it should be different...)
Jaender will cast it on himself before the chain starts, then:
Einhardt and 'Rudi' first
'Poochie' and Arturo Second
Sven and Vox third (so theirs lasts the longest when the fight starts)
So the shortest remaining would be jaender, who would have 7 rounds remaining, if thats how the math works. or 6, if I am thinking about it wrong.
Arturo the Swift |
For next time (since this happened so I have no issues with it continuing to happen)... if it's well lit and we can see that there is a massive hall not more than 20 feet in front of us, we probably won't try to be stealthy in plain sight and send our squishy party members out at the front. The big black block in Google Draw, I believe, stopped us from realizing the absurdity of what we were attempting.
Jaender the Black |
I would agree, I'm not keen with being the wayang shield... :) definitely wouldn't willingly walk into that...

GM Silbeg |
Noted...
Would you have suggestions that would help me to let you know better that the conditions are well lit everywhere?
Arturo the Swift |
I think we're okay on the well lit (I'm sure it has finally sunk in to my brain), just let us know when it gets darker again.
The main thing was the enormous room 20ft away. We technically should have been able to see that it was what we were walking into, even from the centipede corpses. I personally had assumed winding hallways.
Arturo the Swift |
Almost posted this in gameplay, probably best post in discussion, though!
Thanks for the survey answers! I may be trying some derring-do later on. First, though, I'm not familiar with we be goblins - I take it you used those names, yes? Would you be able to label them, I'm not sure who I'm trying to hit. I guess it won't matter if they go down in one hit (as all good goblins should).
So... Poog's turn next, right? Then we send in our heavy hitter! Can't wait. I farking love killing gobbos! ;-)
Jaender the Black |
Poochie is in rare form lately... Several posts have had me literally laughing out loud. Spectacular work

Keeping the rolls is fine. It is actually a ranged touch attack where you have to be adjacent... but doesn't provoke.
Thanks for that! I can't believe splashing incorporeal undead with holy water has never come up in any game I've played in before! Very strange.
GM Silbeg |
The funny thing is that this is the exact encounter that I had to look this up for! My paladin didn't like the idea of getting his strength drained, so used his Shining Wayfinder to cast Protection from Evil before he started sprinkling his "holy water" everywhere.
_Ophiuchus_ |
So my eyes are bigger than my stomach and Ophiuchus is pretty worthless in combat now. A better strategy is meat shield/buff. I have enlarge person and magic weapon. So my plan of attack is Bless, Strong Brute Enlarge person, then move and heal unless you want something different.
_Ophiuchus_ |
Also that is 4 combats - do we chance a rest? I have 1 spell left and I'd like to get some strength back if I could.
GM Silbeg |
Sure, go ahead... in a room that killed three people, and then raised them as undead. I don't see a problem with that ;)
My suggestion would be to move forward until you've exhausted your spells, and then retreat out to the village to get healing and such. Use the town!
GM Silbeg |
BTW - Arturo, a scimitar is a particularly bad weapon choice for a Swashbuckler, as I just realized. Most of your abilities trigger on light or one-handed piercing weapons, like a Rapier. This includes Swashbuckler Finesse. I hope you realized that when you chose scimitar.
I'll let you swap the weapon out (paying the difference to a Rapier, for example) when you go back to town, if you'd like.
Arturo the Swift |
@GM Silbeg Oh, I know all about that. I took a feat from the Advanced Class Guide to help out:
Slashing Grace
Prerequisite(s): Dex 13, Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus with chosen weapon.
Benefit: Choose one kind of one-handed slashing weapon (such as the longsword). When wielding your chosen weapon one-handed, you can treat it as a one-handed piercing melee weapon for all feats and class abilities that require such a weapon (such as a swashbuckler's or a duelist's precise strike) and you can add your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to that weapon's damage. The weapon must be one appropriate for your size.
Not only does it help out with the Swashbuckler ability (specifically, even), but I get the dex bonus to strength as well! Beats dervish dance, too, since I'd take the prerequisite feats regardless and I don't need ranks in perform (dance). With either feat, though, it's totally worth having a scimitar for the dex bonus to damage, in my mind. ;-) I politely decline your generous offer to get a "better" weapon. Thanks for looking out for me, though!
Arturo the Swift |
It's one of the reasons (and because I like the derring do) that I took a level dip in swashbuckler. Proficiency in scimitar and weapon finesse for free (not to mention it's a cool class full stop and has the good attack progression). Not sure when I'll take another swashbuckler level, but I probably will.
GM Silbeg |
Sure... gotcha. Note: Slashing Grace works with a specific weapon (so you have it in Scimitar)... which is fine, but just making sure you paid attention to that ;)
Haven't really looked at all the synergies and craziness in ACG yet, and missed that Swashbuckler Finesse counts as Weapon Finesse for anything that requires it as a prereq.
Personally, I still like rapiers better... and I'd just get DEX to damage with an Agile weapon (later). But, that is my personal preference.
Arturo the Swift |
"Mr. Hairylip, I once knew an elf that could dance like that. I could use a rest in town. I fear that I am out of spells and my strength is half of what it should be."
This brings me to a question I've been wondering about for a while. In PFS, what happens if you use gold and other treasure found in the scenario to purchase items, specifically spell casting services and consumables? I know if you find consumables, you can use them during the scenario with no reduction in GP for the scenario. Are gold found and items sold in game just treated like any other consumable? From reading the guide, I could see how one would rule either yes or no. In those cases, I usually favor the PCs, unless there is a clarification online (or, most commonly, a passage I've missed)
Silbeg, do you know if there is a ruling on this? If not, what is your stance?
Mostly, we just want to get some lesser restoration scrolls / spell casting services for Ophiuchus.
Arturo the Swift |
Hey all, so I'm off to Australia tomorrow. My posting rate will go right down, and while I'm flying will disappear altogether (depending on how my kids are - and the Internet is - at the various airports).
Please do bot me, GM Silbeg, as often as you feel necessary. You know my style... though I am (personally) slightly less brave with Arturo than he brags about being. ;-)
