"I could prepare a spell tomorrow that would allow me to understand what it says, but that won't do us much good if we can't get it to understand what we say. And I'm inclined to think he's not going to be particularly cooperative."

"More importantly, how many of our men were taken?" Ri'el replies as he looks around to see if Sandara is still on deck.


Looking about, two men lie dead on the deck, but all hands are accounted for. Davina was able to save two others with her magic and healing.

Garavaen shudders at the count, "Blasted things took two of us before I could even get a shot off... Was hoping the light works scare him off. "

After tending to the wounded Davina finally came over and said, "We lost two more to injuries, the rest should live though. It looks like we'll need to increase the watch at night, find anywone with good darkvision or the ability to see in dim light and set them as the night watch. Might be worth keeping the lanterns off on the deck at night too, it would make us harder to see and keep those sharkmen from finding us again."

"Unless someone can speak to these things, I say we bleed them and leave them to the sharks. Harsh, but no less than they would do to us. I agree on watch, but lanterns at night would mark us as prey on the waves. For now, lets give the dead the respect they deserve and bury them at sea. We would do best to get back underway."

Bill twists the neck of the unconscious creature he is holding, a loud crack sounding across the deck, then unceremoniously dumps it over the side of the ship.


Bill quickly dispatches the last fishman, throwing him over the side with a splash. With the fishmen gone, Garavaen has a chance to look at the necklace that snapped off in his hand. The pendant is made of coral and an odd sort of platinum that has dark whorls that almost look like ink running through it.

"Well, let's take a look," Ri'el replies as he casts a detect magic spell over it.


The necklace radiates no magic of any kind.

Bill simply heads back to his bunk to go back to sleep.

Looking at the blood and carnage left in the wake of the unexpected attack Astein shakes his head disgusted.

"Alright, those things could return in number. Lets get underway before any more is lost! Take wind! Move it!"

Astein steps up to the wheel continuing to shout orders to get the group underway. As Bill moves back below Astein says, "See that that necklace is appraised and counted as plunder in the morning if you would, Bill."

Garavaen winces, "Have to say I never thought I'd need to worry about getting eaten if we stayed out of the water."


Setting sail in the early dawn, the ship makes good speed, passing several small coastal villages. Fishguts, during passing out the morning meal, which is surprisingly good, seems more alert, and well, far less drunk than he has been. With clear eyes he talks to Astein, "Cap'n if yer going to make a turn as pirates, ya may want to raid a few of those villages. Sail by one that seems ripe, and return after sunset. Ye'll meet little resistance that way."

The ship travels on without issue until a few hours before sundown. The lookout calls out "Smoke to the east!" Sure enough a column of smoke winds its way into the air. To the east is open ocean, with no land in sight.

Prior to the smoke being spotted.

Astein gathers the officers and Bill to discuss the next steps. "It has been suggested that some of these villages may be ripe for a quick raid. Little difference between raiding the coast or a ship, but risk and reward might be higher. I'm inclined to give it a shot if you all are in agreement as we're going to have to do something to keep the ship and crew paid for while turning any profit. Thoughts?"

Upon seeing the smoke...
Astein looks out at the smoke and shouts, "Pull sail and prepare to come about!"

He then looks for the officers and Bill to discuss the smoke. "Could be a ship burning most likely. That often means battle. We should look to it in case we can take even one or two ships while they are lagging. We're short a few crew if anyone are looking to leave a less fortunate boat for better."

"Aye, well, if we be pirates, then let's do some pirating!" Ri'el replies with a grin, his hair whipping about in anticipation.

"Let's go see what we can pick from the sea, and if that ain't enough excitement we can find a nice quiet village afterwords."


You turn the ship towards the smoke at a northeasterly heading, and before long, the crows nest calls down "Two ships, Cutter and a Brig. Cutter is Chelaxian, and gots the better of em."

"Well, I wouldn't mind busting a few Chelaxian teeth in captain. The devils have it coming to them." Bill says with a straight face, leaving it unclear if he means devils in the literal sense, or is using it as a metaphorical one.

Prior to Smoke
Davina considered the thought of raiding villages and found it didn't sit well with her. She remembered the attack on the monastery far too well to be comfortable with it and said. "I'm not very comfortable with that, raiding shipping is one thing, raiding these small villages is something altogether different." She shrugged her shoulders and continued, "Still, if that is the decision then so be it."

After the Smoke
As they discussed the vessels where the smoke was coming from Davina felt much better about this task. Particularly since it meant they might well be saving people in addition to getting cargo. She nodded and said, "Makes sense to me. I'll look through the supplies and make sure we have everything ready to treat injuries afterwords."

Davina was about to leave when the Chelaxian's came up again and she finally asked, Who are these Chelaxian's you keep talking about? I've only heard the term recently but don't know what it means."

Looking quizzically at Davina Astein says, "Chelaxians are devil-worshiping tyrants who keep their nation together through diabolism and slavery. They also think their s!~~ smells like roses."

To the rest he says, "I agree, we should take the Chelaxian while it is focused on the other ship. Let's move."

Soon as Astein gives the word, Ri'el nods and heads to the railing along the quarter deck.

"Look alive, maties! We be makin' to loot that Chelexian cutter! Unfurl the sails! Weapons at the ready! Let's show those devil-worshipping scum bags what their diabolism is worth on the open seas!"


Ambrose moves in next to Astein, and nods respectfully, "Cap'n if ye'd be listenin' to a bita advice. Come at em from the west with the settin' sun behind ya. Ye'll be able ta get right on em, afore they know yer there."

Ri'el takes the wheel and begins altering the course of the ship to get into position for the assault with the setting sun at the stern.

Unless we are doing something special, I would take 10 on all checks as your skill should allow success on most things.

Bill moves to the fore of the ship, stringing his bow once he gets there, then waiting for the Ri'el to bring the ship in close.


True to Ambrose's word, the ship sails with the setting sun at its back, and glides in close to the Chelish vessel, The Famished Mane emblazoned on its aft, undetected. It sets, sails unfurled, lashed to another ship just starting to show flames licking from inside, a lost cause. Standing with his back to the group, leading from behind, is a man dressed in an elaborate coat, adorned with epaulets and brocade, wearing a richly appointed tricorn hat. He exhorts his crew, "Lock them in their galley, cut us free, and set the boat to the depths!"

Bill nocks an arrow, pulling it back in his bow and sighting on any man near the entrance to the galley. He then holds, "On your orders captain."

Davina readies herself and prepares to cast a spell when they are ready to attack, one that will land on the group that are locking their victims into the hold to die as their ship burns around them.

I plan to drop glitterdust on the largest group of enemies on the dying vessel. DC 16 will negates blindness, new save each round if they fail.

"All, focus on the Chellish officers. Ri'el hand the wheel off to a crewman as we come into position, we'll need you on the offensive. Bill, shoot now if you please."

Orders given in a calm even tone, Astein then calls forth magic fire to dance on the deck of the slaver vessel and throws his head back to begin his eerie battle laughter.

Flaming Sphere focused on the Captain.

Bill corrects his target, instead pointing at the captain of the opposing ship, then letting the arrow fly.

"Aye Cap'n," Ri'el replies as he waves Sandara over for a quick kiss before handing her her the wheel.

"If I'm gonna need to trust the wheel and our lives to anyone, it's gonna be you, love," he says with a grins.

He casts barkskin on himself and prepares to casts divine favour when the boarding starts.

Garavaen calls to the men, "You heard the man. Officers first.". He then raises his crossbow, seeking the Captain, then looses the bolt.

Crossbow: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 for 1d8 ⇒ 1


Bill and Garavaen's bolts fly true both taking the captain in the back, and Astein's sphere bursts into fiery life, the flames scorching the captain, who falls to the deck unconscious.


The two ships thump together, the crew awaiting orders, ready with the boarding planks...

With the enemy captain down Bill turns his focus back to those trying to lock prisoners in the hold of the burning ship.

Bill moves towards the boarding planks while drawing another arrow, then releasing it.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Confirm: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Extra Damage from Crit: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13

Astein barks out orders, "Boarders take the ship, Archers provide support! The captain is dead and the prize is ours!"

Shouting to the other crew, "Throw down your weapons or you will burn like your captain!"

With that he concentrates to move the flaming sphere to burn whomever seems to the the next person in authority on the slaver.

Once the boarding planks are laid, Ri'el casts divine favour on himself.

"Best listen to our captain. I'd prefer not to kill you lot if possible," Ri'el says leisurely as his hair begins to whip about him menacingly.


The other marines, caught by surprise, toss their weapons to the deck. The others on the captured ship start to draw weapons, but stop, some rubbing at their eyes, and the others looking at the dust that coats them. Seeing the party, and their dead captain, the marines on the ship toss their weapons aside as well. Smoke starts to billow from belowdecks on the captured ship.

Astein nods at Garavaen and calls to his Officers. "We will head over to the Chellaxian ship, segregate the crews and take the weapons."

To the burning ship he calls out. "Send five people down to get the fire out return to deck. You'll be getting out of this alive and as free men if you cooperate.".

"A pity, I'd have liked to bust a few Chelaxian heads."

Bill stows his bow and begins collecting weapons off the deck of the burning ship, eventually tossing them into a pile on the Chelaxian frigate.


Astein realizes that the ship's crew is no longer above deck when he barks the order to get the fire out. As Bill crosses to the burning ship, he hears the screams of the crew who have been locked in the hold by the Chelaxians after they set fire to the ship.

Bill scoops up several blades from among the discarded weapons as he rushes towards the hold. Anything that might be used as leverage like a crowbar if needed, while not caring if he breaks a few blades.

"Garavaen shoot anyone who so much as twitches for one of their weapons." he shouts as he runs.

What is the hold cover made of (wood? iron grate?), and how is it locked close?
