Honestly, it hasn't really come up before, this is the first real loot we've gotten I believe.
Ri'el |
Yeah, and I think the system I proposed was pretty much what Morgrym suggested here, with the value of items being calculated at the selling price.
So basically, if someone takes the +1 shortsword, for example, they count as having taken about 1000gp of loot, and that will be factored in the next time we divide up the loot.
Astein Longblade |
I agree with that method, once we have enough cash to make it work. The pike and amulet are worth too much for anyone to keep right now. They are also quite good items that we should't sell off just to make accounts work better.
I say we make use of them for the short term and sell them in a level or two when we have enough that someone could buy them. In other words, they belong to the party but one character holds and uses them until we as a group decide it is time to sell it off since the individual could afford to keep it if he wants to bad enough.
Garavaen Drusus |
Generally, this method still works if you (a) allow debt, and (b) allow people to borrow items -- for instance, even if nobody wants the sword or pike right now, it makes less sense to leave them in a chest until we can sell them than it does to have someone borrow and make use of them -- at least until we can sell them.
Of course, some of that depends on just how well equipped the quartermaster is. ;)
But yes, it can be an issueat low levels that a lot of wealth might be wrapped up in items and IOUs -- preventing the rest of the party from equipping themselves.
Also -- you need to remember when doing the math that a +1 sword in a party of 5 actually only costs 800gp -- because the 1,000gp would be divided by 5, and so 200gp goes back to the person who "bought" it.
Ri'el |
The point to my system was that whoever takes them now will be ahead for now, but will lose out on subsequent batches of loot until the rest catch up.
Loot division 1:
Ri'el - longsword +1 (1000gp)
Davina - +1 buckler (500gp)
Astein - 300gp
On the next occassion, the party finds a ring of protection +1 and leather armor +1. Ri'el cannot take either item because he is already ahead. Astein gets first pick, and chooses the ring, Davina gets the armor.
Loot division after round 2:
Ri'el - longsword +1 (1000gp)
Davina - buckler +1 , leather armor +1 (1000gp total)
Astein - 300gp, ring of protection (1300gp total)
After round 2, Astein is now ahead, so he picks last. The 3rd pile of loot is a dagger +1 that nobody wants, and a cloak of resistance and 850gp. Ri'el and Davina roll against each other to see who gets the cloak, Davina wins and the dagger gets sold. The remaining gold pile of 1850gp after the dagger is sold is used to even the pots as much as possible.
Loot division after round 2:
Ri'el - longsword +1 (1000gp), 800gp (1800gp)
Davina - buckler +1 , leather armor +1, cloak of resistance, 550gp (1800gp total)
Astein - 300gp, ring of protection +1, 500gp (1800gp total)
So sometimes some people will be ahead, but no one will be consistently ahead, and there is no need to sell items prematurely just so loot can be divided evenly then and there (but over time the distribution will be quite even).
Edit: This also avoids having to do the fancy maths described by Garaveen's latest post.
Astein Longblade |
I think Ri'el's method works best, especially at lower levels and when you don't have regular access to a market to liquidate and buy rare items easily.
I vote for that until we gain more economic independence and a regular market. Also, we want people to have access to a little bit of cash, even if they get the pike or sword this time around. Its no fun for anyone to not be able to afford a mug of ale at an inn.
Morgrym Stonewall |
so, just checking but am i the only planned character to be in the party that plans to be a front liner? im not a reach build so i cant exactly prevent all people from getting at you guys in the back if that comes up. ill do my best of course but the party seesm like it might have issues with people bein squashed as im only one man. i definatly shouldnt take the amulet if thats the case as you guys will need to buff your armour.
Garavaen Drusus |
We used to have a few more front-liney sorts -- but it seems they were the ones who did most of the fallout. Garavaen's able to defend himself up close (and, in fact, soon gains the ability to use the crossbow like a melee weapon), but certainly prefers ranged combat.
Morgrym Stonewall |
looking over bolt ace (ive never actually done that befroe :P) i can se your happy up to 100ft, if aryena plans on going archer she functions up too roughly the same range. our scorcerer will get longer range as she levels cuz spellz. i think our shaman being a devine caster can take the amulet, should probly get some better armor at first oppertunity.
Just sayin, probly gunna want someone who can stand near me and not be scared of bein stabbed to death, 2 in front 3 in back can work fine. i feel like 1 in front and 4 in back, recipie for disaster in the long run. though that does partially depend on how the GM runs things :P
Arenya |
Yeah, I could try and do some Melee but it wouldn't work out so well, Arenya isn't too squishy but I wouldn't be putting out too much damage either.
Ri'el |
I have some ideas for Ri'el's defences at later levels, but for now, he doesn't have the strength for heavier armour. Main reason I didn't go for the amulet was that I'll be getting access to barkskin next level.
Also, just occurred to me that the splitting of the crew provides an in-game reason for the disappearance of Jack and Eli. XD
GM Shathira |
Ya think, Ri'el? ;) It made for a convenient spot, for sure. :D
Maps for the Man's Promise should be up shortly. Google Draw is being pissy at the moment.
We now have 5 in the group, with one "tank", are you all good with moving forward with that, or would adding another martial/hybrid be your choice? I'll leave it up to you. The AP is designed for 4, but scaling for 6 is no big deal.
Garavaen Drusus |
Considering how well the ranged combat role seems to be covered (with magic)... If people would prefer, I could swap out the boltslinger for something a bit more melee...
I've got both a swashbuckler and a Fighter (Viking) that I'd worked up for other S&S recruitments that I didn't submit for this campaign (partially because the applications were filled with melee folk, especially swashbucklers).
Garavaen Drusus |
Was just offering it up as a thought to avoid the need for a recruitment and possibly getting another melee-sort who then vanishes on us -- and to more "properly" fill the role.
However, working within the lines, I could probably dip a level or two of one of the other martial classes. (I do have to say I'm rather disappointed at how poorly swashbuckler stacks with slinger -- especially based on the whole thought of a "corsair" sort of character.)
If I do that, I'd probably look at Urban Barbarian (ability to dex-rage for ranged combat, and "normal" rage when things get thick), or Sniper Slayer (studied combat and sneak attack making a pretty effective flanking-buddy for the paladin).... or, maybe ranger or brawler -- ranger's got that pirate-archetype that would fit thematically, and brawler would probably make sense for Garavaen -- I imagine after the fun in the hold, he'd be all about never being unarmed ever again (and, what's more, the ability to strike with knees and feet means he can always fight without needing to put down the crossbow).
Or, as I said, I can slide in a swashbuckling gambler or the proud (exiled) Ulfen. Or we can recruit.
Ri'el |
Ri'el is going to be a mid-range skirmisher. I'll be looking into taking snake style with a high sense motive modifier, so I'll be fine if not more than 1 person makes attack rolls against me (i.e. if someone gets past our front-liner. Even then, if they don't have reach, they first need to get past a trip attack of opportunity to get to me, as long as my prehensile hair is active.
Which I should have remembered to declare against that guy who bull-rushed me into the water...
Astein Longblade |
All,
I have a big trial coming up Wed-Tuesday of next week. I hope to still be able to post regularly, but if I'm not responsive and slowing things down please NPC me.
Thanks!
Arenya |
I've been doing 15 hour days this week. I feel for you, and as the GM you have look at things far more in depth. Who do we have that's neutral to us aboard.
I it possible to get a crew manifest with a list of who is friendly, neutral and against us with a little * next to the names of the officers.
Ri'el |
I'm not really sure how the AP is supposed to play out, but since we levelled not too long ago and this AP is supposed to be semi-sand-boxy, I'm guessing it is anticipated that we would either run off to rescue our friends then come back and take over the ship, or fight Plugg now and then go rescue our friends.
If this is not the case and I'm about to send the AP off all potential rails, let me know and I'll try to work out a way for Ri'el to stick around, but at this point, Ri'el is planning to make a break for the isle first chance he can to search for Sandara.
Astein Longblade |
I think we need to get together as a group and strategize. Astein is feeling a serious pressure to mutiny, suspicious that our side is going to be picked-off one-by one.
I can't see those squid things keeping someone alive, and Astein is more than half-convinced that our friends were taken out by Plugg and crew. We may need to have an in-character session to figure out next steps.
Arenya |
Congratulations! That's wonderful.
Davina Kurikami |
I will be going out of town June 3-7 and will have limited internet availability most likely so feel free to bot me during that time frame.
GM Shathira |
Do the recaps as I've done them in this last fight work for everyone? I think I've landed on something I like. Giving description, and then a "Status Check" for each round, and bolding the people that still have an action in the current round. I think it will help the flow of combat and help get through them quicker, since it shows exactly who has to act, and still let people who want to post ahead do so.
If you have anything you think would add to it, or think something detracts or is hard to follow, please let me know. I'm pretty good with constructive criticism
Morgrym Stonewall |
i really helps me keep track of stuff yes, i am even going to steal that for myself for my IRL friends which im having start a PBP game cuz its easyer to do with the new baby around, so honors to you
edit: and it seems you missed my comment on my post, ive only taken 3 damage as i have DR 1/adamantine. just letting you know so those updates can be accurate
Arenya |
I'm a fan of the system, it really brings the combat to life.
Ri'el |
Hey guys, I'm doing a quick pickup for The Confirmation in about 12 hours from the time of this post, and need 1 more for a minimum legal table.
FiddlersGreen |
Hey guys, I'm doing a quick pickup for The Confirmation in about 12 hours from the time of this post, and need 1 more for a minimum legal table.
Oops sorry, that should have been 24 hours from the time of the last post, or 22 hours from the time of this post. XD
Elias aka 'Eli' |
I'd like to do that. I'm a little confused where we are in the order. In one of the earlier rounds you were bolding the folks that still needed to act. That was really working for me especially since some folks were posting their next round ahead of your round wrap-up and/or not labeling in which round they were acting. I'm not sure if Morgrym and Whore 3 have gone in Round 4. I was assuming they haven't so I've been waiting to post based on the tactical situation.
Garavaen Drusus |
Apologies -- I've been bad about not posting the round of my action -- though I'm also confused by who's turn it is -- I thought I was lagging a little behind due to being last in the order.
Arenya |
Getting back to once a day sounds good. If we don't finish a round within 48 hours you could just GMbot the remaining players.
Garavaen Drusus |
Sorry about pausing on a question, I was just trying to decide whether to take a shot with a poor chance of success due to the -4, or potentially changing my action, either to use my rapier or by using the last of my grit... I especially didn't want to retroactively assert "Well I would have used it if it known I was facing a -4.."
