"We should be able to take down a kobold in one blow. But Roet and Garekk could take out anything bigger such as the metal machine we faced down below."

"Talia do you know of any other warriors or adventurers in town, possibly adept at traps like Teryn? I mean should we post a notice for hire or go around the place touting for someone. Does it matter if we spend tomorrow here looking for help? Aaron what do you think?"

Talia purses her lips. "Nobody else springs to mind. I assume you met the rangers' lodge? Anyhow I heard the sheriff is back tomorrow. Perhaps this mess with Silas and Lensing has been sorted out. At any rate, there might be a few more able bodied fighters around for you to pick from."

Moving on.

It's morning, about 6am. Talia comes round and rouses you for breakfast.

"The sheriff has indeed returned. But there's no sign of Silas or Lensing."

The sheriff and his deputies ride slowly through the gate and stop briefly by the inn. A figure, apparently a human woman, dismounts from a horse, apparently a spare one (perhaps that on which Silas was led off), thanks the group and enters the inn. The sheriff nods in brief acknowledgement, and calls to the group to head back to barracks, while he goes to report to the baroness.

Talia looks round. "Well, it looks like we have a new guest. Shall we go and meet her?"

She sets off downstairs. In the room below, breakfast is being served. The woman stands just inside the door.

Helien, that's your cue, welcome to the game.

Note Garrek is still technically here as an NPC. He'll say his farewells at the end of this scene.

Helien:
I sent you info a while back on what has happened in Cassomir. Probably for today at least, you'll be the only source of information on that.

"Nothing wrong with fierce!" says Leng with a sly grin. He approaches Helien and extends his hand in greeting. "Hello and welcome! I'm Leng, and my associates here are in the middle of some local business. A skilled traveler like yourself might be just what we need to finish some work and perhaps earn a little money. Care to join us for breakfast?"

The woman steps forward to greet Leng, extending her hand in response - "Well met Leng, I am Helien, and a stout breakfast would be more than welcome" - her grip is strong and determined.

In fact she seems ready for just about anything - the lamellar leather armor has clearly seen good use, as well as the blade hanging from her belt. At her back, Helien sports a large, heavy steel shield with no symbols or embellishment but well kept.

In spite of all the gear carried, she seems to move easily, and not much burdened by the load - her body is lean and elegant, but her arms and legs show well toned muscles. The silver hair is slightly unkempt but shows bluish hues depending on how the light shines on it. She keeps it propped high with a red bandana, but it still mirrors the color of her eyes - the same silver and bluish hues.

"What business would that be?" - she smiles openly at the suggestion - "I am listening" - and moves toward the breakfast table, stopping short before the others - "Well met to you also - I am Helien"

"This is Den, and Avogadro the Astounding, and Pipernortin (whom we call 'Pip'), and Arnon," says Leng, making introductions around the breakfast table. "This is Helien," he says to the group.

"We've been investigating some business with kobolds infiltrating an old wizard's tower near here, at the behest of the local baroness. Um, gents, you could perhaps fill the lady in better than I?" he says.

Pipernortin finishes shoving a fist-sized piece of bread into his mouth, then mumbles a greeting to the new arrival with his mouth full. The words are hardly recognizable as such, though he does manage to catch most of the crumbs before they hit the ground. (That was only a common courtesy to their gracious host!) He downs a mouthful of water and swallows the lump, then tries again.

"Yep, Pip's the name! Pipernortin if you're feeling fancy. It's a pleasure to meet another out of towner! The people here are nice and all, but they're, well-" He glances over at Arnon, then stops halfway through that thought. "...Did you get stuck here too?"

She seems completely dumbfounded by the display as she takes the flower from Avogadro - "I... Astounding you said?" - she smiles again, squinting at the man - "Tell me, was that a... Trick? Or magic?" - she inquires.

"Silas... Yes I have heard something about it around Cassomir" - she shrugs - "The Taldan 5th Legion's payroll was stolen, and Silas is accused of being an accomplice to the theft, from what I've heard" - she recounts - "Though, I'm not so sure if things are as straightforward as they seem - I've heard about Andoran spies, a husband and wife team? Pip had always heard stories of the great covert battle between Andoran and Taldor. He'd spent plenty of time in both, and really considered his heart belonging more to the former, but didn't really have all that many problems with either set of folks. (Some of them did not appreciate him nearly as much.) It seemed unlikely Silas was a part of all that, but wasn't that also sort of the point of being a spy? In any case, it would be a great twist to add into the epic he was stewing over...

The Circle reincarnated him and he came back as that gnome. A happy gnome - happy enough with being back alive that he gave out the next litter of these he found. "Mister Avogadro? - ah you're here. I had a look at the concoction you left. It's very very old, very adulterated, acid. It will burn through skin and leather, very lightly. It will hurt - and it will really hurt if you fall in it, but it probably wouldn't kill you because you'd be able to climb out before it really burned through your clothes. But it's too weak - and the wrong kind of acid - to burn through metal."

"There still seems to be plenty that needs cleaning up. The town's Baroness - and a large number of the citizens, it would seem - want the kobolds gone, so they can't cause any more trouble. There are some side issues as well, the town's druids have gone missing. It's not clear whether that's linked to this wider issue, but everyone here seems keen to blame the kobolds as first resort for everything. We need the work, and to be frank we seem to be the only people equipped to solve the problem peacefully. Left to their own devices, the Baroness' only other resort seems to be to call for the Taldorian legions. "As for why your own arrival is opportune ... Well, I'm afraid I need to move on. I came here on a quest, sent by my shaman. I've tarried long enough. And this group isn't the strongest bunch of fighters, especially since Roet left. Leng here replaced him, but he's ... untested. They'll need help. So you can have my slot, and my pay."

He turns to the others. "I'm sorry, friends. It's been fun. And I hope our paths will cross again some day. But I have an oath to fulfil. I must move on."

@Helien: I'm hoping you're going to drop the quotes for the replies, I'm not sure even my standard length posts are fully read - in fact from the number of unsubtle "As you know ..." reminders and the amount of witness-leading I do I can guess not - but from a style point of view the extensive quotes make them even more difficult to read.

Talia shakes her head. "No, I did check the rooms. All of their own stuff was gone. But they didn't steal anything, not what you'd normally expect in these circumstances. You might ask to see L. Komenos next time you're up at the Manor. The Baroness is putting her up now, being a fellow aristocrat and all. I got the impression that M. Dukas-Kort was cosying up to her, though she seemed less than keen on the idea. If I'd have bet on there being a couple, more likely those two than Dukas-Kort and Esmeralda. But, well, if they're professional spies and all, that's what they'd want you to think."

@Helien, again - without having to go through the names/background again for these NPCs - they are in the Prologues in the Campaign Info section. L. = Lady, M. = Mister/Master.

Good point, I'd forgotten. I'll have Garekk come with you, though, and we can leave him there.

Garekk laughs loudly, perhaps the first time the others have heard him laugh like this, and slaps Pip on the shoulder, perhaps a little harder than Pip would have wished.

"Less koboldy, yes I certainly hope so. Less demony, as well, I think, though that creature, whether it was named Harzogopas or - what was it, Devorada? - doesn't seem to have been even a proper demon after all. At any rate, I am going to go and see my kinsman Baccus before I leave. I think you had some work you were going to pick up from him?"

Den places a hand on Garekk's shoulder and squeezes gently. "Good luck Garekk. I'll miss you."

The druid pays little attention to the byplay until it is time to head for the kobolds. He smiles at the opportunity to travel out of town and into the woodlands around.

"Come on Draken - time to see Pip's squirrel sword."

Arnon embraces Garekk, wishing him luck, and welcomes Helien.
"Thank you for joining us in our quest."

Garekk walks slightly behind the group as they set off for the blacksmiths. The early morning light shines down on Belhaim, the weather is fine and the townspeople are setting about their day. Some of them recognise the group and wave cheerily.

At the smiths, Baccus steps forward, arms outraised, a wide smile on his face. "Welcome, welcome! I have made swords for your flaccid magician and his pet squirrel! Some strong morning tea while I fetch them?"

Garekk shakes his head. "For me, perhaps, master. It would be good to spend the time of day, but my friends have adventures ahead, and can't tarry here."

Baccus nods vigorously in return. "Yes, yes, I understand. For us there will be tea and chocolate biscuits. I shall fetch swords forthwith."

He steps into the shop and a few short minutes later emerges with a rapier and a small sword, crafted from one of the daggers the group found. "There," he says, as he hands them, respectively to Avogadro and to Pip. "These will make both of you look good while you find somewhere to hide."

Avogadro adds a rapier, and Pip a small mithral sword, to their respective inventories. I need to review the inventories and the money but will have a look at the weekend.

Garekk turns to the group. "And now, it genuinely is goodbye. I'll see you around, I trust."

He waves, then turns and resumes his conversation with Baccus. The last you see of him, the two are sat together, snarling animatedly at one another, while a third, huge half-orc, wearing a smith's apron, covered in soot, pours tea for each of them, into dainty, flower-decorated cups, balanced delicately on similarly patterned saucers.

The group continues its walk, through the sunny morning air, up the road and over the bridge, to the base of the fallen tower.

I'll post again before turning in, to get you to the kobolds' camp.

My holiday starts tonight so please look after my PC until 5th September. I may manage to post in game but it's unlikely with the wifi service I expect.

"This is truly a masterpiece fit for a king of squirrels, Baccus. I cannot thank you enough, though I trust our chieftain here will keep you good company while we take care of some rather unpleasant business." He smiles, offering the much larger orcish shield-er, traveling companion his 'dainty squirrel' hand. For a moment, his gnomish demeanor fades to something at least slightly more serious as he shakes the man's hand. "I'm sure our paths will cross again Garekk. Life would make for a rather poor story if all our roads ran their own course."

Woo, kobold time.

"Flacid" was a masterstroke Shady, thanks for that.

Having reached the collapsed tower, and most of the party (apart from the newcomers) knowing the way, it's a relatively quick trek through the lower corridors, which they explored two days ago.

They pass directly through the imp's "Persuasion Chamber" and out, along the corridors beyond and down the precarious ramp along the degraded acid pool, then through the treasury and into the caves beyond, eventually reaching the tunnel that the kobolds' had said would lead to their camp at the disused quarry.

The tunnel's somewhat longer than expected, about a quarter of a mile, and only 5 feet high at any point, so quite tiring. The tunnel ends at a ledge, overlooking the quarry (now a lake) and which winds counter-clockwise down to the far shore. Following this path, they arrive, around 11am, at a set of tunnel openings which, they assume, lead into the kobold camp.

The wall of the quarry is about 40 feet high, and a 50 foot wide strip of short stretches back to the lake's edge. It's strewn with stony debris-the result of centuries of rockslides. Several larger boulders stand against the middle of the quarry wall.

A number (between two and six in each case, though, since they are moving back and forth into the tunnels it's difficult to tell) of kobolds stands guard at each of the two tunnel entrances.

This takes you to where the counters are on Roll20. What next?

Helien knos Draconic.

On a side note, I will usually not post much during the weekends - family time and all that ;)

Helien was about to suggest they scouted the area to try and find out more of the kobold forces, but her companions take the lead, adn she follows suit with their initiative, keeping her eyes opened to their surroundings - "Yth confn mrith vin offer ihk parley"

Draconic:

"We come with an offer for parley"

After briefly staring at Helien's attempt to speak Draconic, the kobolds ignore the various attempts at diplomacy and launch into an attack.

"Ah, they don't seem to be listening very well..." Pip says, taking a few steps backward (and behind the nearest of his companions). "Did you tell them we're just here to talk? Maybe some more tea nd biscuits?"

Forgoing the new blade at his belt, Pipernortin sought instead the universal language of song. Taking his fiddle he began a slow, quiet melody--one he'd once heard played at some fancy little establishment in Cassomir. One of the same little establishments he'd later been booted out of for a lack of coin, but that was probably just water under the bridge by now. In any case, it seemed calming back then... so maybe it would help now?

Trying to supplement a diplomacy check with a bit of performance... and if that fails, Pip'll switch to inspire courage next round.

Kudos to Pip, that true to character is trying to avoid bloodshed even after the kobolds start the hostilities.

Since we are botting Den ... Looking back I don't think Draken has independent action, so unless anyone has a better idea we can ignore his turn as such; presumably he will counter attack if attacked so I will have him hold his action.

The kobolds close in on the group ...

I've attached nameplates to distinguish them on Roll20. Re targeting, my policy on NPC attacks, for those who are new to the campaign, is to have the attackers avoid AoO and attack the first target they reach, unless there's some obvious tactical advantage or there is a written-up tactic in the scenario. Where there's a choice of targets the attacker will take the easier one (without knowing the AC, but for example preferring the flat footed character, a character without cover, etc.) and all things being equal will decide randomly. Normally this is all hidden by spoilers.

Kobolds A and B can only attack Den
Kobold C has a choice of Den, Arnon and Leng (Draken not being FF)
Kobold D will attack Leng
Kobold E attacks Pip (who is not FF)
Kobold F attacks Helien

Targeting:
Arnon, Den, Leng, alphabetical order: 1d3 ⇒ 2 Den

Kobold C attacks Den also

Kobold A on Den: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21 Hit, Crit chance
Kobold B on Den: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Miss
Kobold C on Den: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Miss
Kobold D on Leng: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14 Hit
Kobold E on Pip: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18 Hit
Kobold F on Helien: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11 Miss
Kobold A crit chance: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12 Miss

Kobold A damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Kobold D damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Kobold E damage: 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

... swarming them with their spears. Three of them close on Den, while others jab at Leng, Pip and Helien respectively. Den manages to dodge some of the blows, but in the process is hit in the side by one of the spears. Helien manages to avoid the oncoming attack completely, while Leng and Pip each take painful blows.

As C has now attacked Den, Draken now acts.

Draken attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13

Snarling, Draken lashes out at one of the kobolds who attacked Den, but the creature manages to dodge the Thylacine's jaws.

Everyone else is now up. Den, Leng and Pip have lost 3, 5 and 5 hp respectively.
