Taking her time searching this room she sees the prints Kessa found but has no idea what they are from. She spots a ring nailed into one of the rafters that Kessa missed. Making sure there are no flames nearby she takes her time and climbs up to retrieve the ring. Dropping back to the group a thump and shows the others the ring. "What do you think this was nailed to a rafter for?"

Aprraise the ring: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Ariela pulls the ring back from Kessa, "Hey! You missed it up there, I think I should get to wear it."

She smirks as she slips it onto her finger and holds it out to Kessa once more, "What do you think?"

Sigh. I specifically said that Take 10 was available on Perception for searching the room, only (and on the Climb, if the ring was spotted). To be clear, my policy on this is:

- if it's an action you've initiated, such as saying you're performing a search, and taking 20 on the search itself, without knowing there is something to search for, then I'll generally apply the 20 (in this case you would have found the key, and I wouldn't have put it in a spoiler; I'd also have implemented any consequences of taking significant time searching the room).

Zakfi looks at the tiny tracks to see if he can identify them.

Oh wow, you lot were busy yesterday! I checked the game Saturday, and then again this morning. 20 posts! Yikes. I love the enthusiasm though. Let's keep it going!

Killian kneels down on his haunches next to Zakli, and looks at the tracks. He examines the tracks, noting the depth of the depression, and the softness of the earth.

He's not trying to identify, just see if he can use his tracking skills to gauge anything else, i.e. the age of the print, the approximate weight of that which made the tracks, etc.

Survival Check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

The tracks are very recent. The creatures that made them were relatively small - human baby sized.

Zakli:
They're the tracks of grimples, a small, dirty, flea-ridden and generally unpleasant type of gremlin that tends to infest rubbish piles and old buildings.

"I do believe these are the tracks of gremlins... grimples, even. A grimples is a small, dirty, flea-ridden and generally just most unpleasant creature! As I recall, they tend to infest rubbish piles and old buildings."

Airela inspects the grill to see if there are keyholes for the keys they just found. If so she will insert it and open the grill, otherwise she turns to the party and asks, "Anyone want to take a crack at popping this sucker open?"

Taking the keys from the party she inserts both until one fits and opens up the grill and peers inside.

"Miss Ariela, do you want to try the lock or should I?" Aram asks, walking over to the grate. "Ah I see you already are!"


The grille opens. The area beyond seems to have been converted to act as an entrance hall for the area beyond, apparently through what was previously a secret door, though that door now hangs from decayed hinges.

Despite the scenario being clear that the door is hanging open and easily visible, the room - which is to the west of A2, is obscured on the player map.

Looking through the opening, the group can see an old workroom, housing numerous old slaughterhouse tools, veterinary equipment, and woodworking tools, all of which are covered with a thick layer of dust through which strange tracks and patterns have been traced. Heavy mallets, crumbling ropes, and tools for restraining animals hang from pegs in the walls or rest atop leaning tables. To the southwest, a trap door sits ajar, propped open by a block of wood.

Ariela winks at Aram and ducks through to the other side. Once through, she begins to thoroughly search and inspect the room. Taking 20+4=24 on Perception again.

If she finds no signs of trouble she pokes her head back through and waves everyone in. "C'mon in slowpokes!"

Aram frowns as he draws his rapier and begins to creep slowly across the floor, towards the trap door, moving as stealthily as he can manage.

There's no sign of trouble. Note on time - it's now by my reckoning, and assuming a start at 8am, allowing for all the Take 20's on Perception, around 11am.

Leaning in to what is in reality probably Kessas hip, Aram says in a loud stage whisper, "I do not think Lady Ariela likes me much. Pity really, I think she is delightful!" The little Wizard sighs and shakes his head, the cowl of his cloak jingling lightly, and strangely, as he does.

Killian follows the group, eyes alert.


As the group descends through the trap door, with Rexus, still quiet, following last - a number of tools - hammers, spanners, screwdrivers, the like - fall spontaneously from where they've been hanging on the walls of the upper room. Rexus, who is still in that room, starts and cries out involuntarily, obviously frightened.

Meanwhile, at the bottom of the ladder beneath the trap door is a large chamber, filled with the eye-watering stench of urine and feces. Nests made of chewed crates and barrels line the walls, while rusty knives and hooks cover the tabletops.

From the distance, somewhere else in the basement, comes the sound of an ethereal, very pretty melody, played on some kind of flute, or pipes. The music wafts in and out of hearing, as if the player is moving around, back and forth into a place where they can be heard, for a few seconds at a time.

I've revealed this new room on Roll20 (it's on the same map). Can you confirm who has actually descended into the room, please (and preferably place your counters). Rexus will come last.

Ariela ignores Aram's comment for now and winces when all of the racket is made. She sighs heavily and shoots a glance back at Rexus. She grumbles to herself, "Seriously, why don't you just yell and let everyone know where we are!" Moving into the room she begins to look around.

Zakli is hesitent to enter, but eventually does so, starting to feel a little more comfortable to look around.


Killian - fine to be on the ladder, but there should be only one on there.

Zakli & Killian - you need to identify yourselves on the Roll20 chat so I can allocate you ownership of your respective counters. I've moved Zakli's counter into the room. Waiting on Em and Kessa to sort themselves.

Em descends into the room after Zakli and peers around for anything unusual and listens for the source of the sounds.

Kessa keeps close to Ariela, ready to protect her friend from any harm.

There's a rustling sound from the east side of the room and three large rats emerge.

Initiative:

Aram moves out from the shadows and up beside Zakli, beginning to summon his magics as he mutters under his breath, reading from his large shoddy tome, as he casts his hand at the rat directly before him.

DM:

Aram is casting Magic Missile.

UMD-1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14

Aram throws his hand forward with a shouted "AH HA!", but nothing happens. He frowns, muttering the words again and gesturing, all to no avail.

"Ah. Well... that is not good!" He grins sheepishly, before drawing his Rapier.

Killian moves to the rat in front of Zakli, and swipes at it with his claws, missing wildly.

He growls, and gives the rat an angry look.

Melee Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7


Kessa moves up to a rat (A) and tries to whack it with her sword.

attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

If someone else finishes off that particular rat before Kessa's turn, feel free to reassign the attack to a different rat.


In the interests of getting some movement I am going to assume Ariela and Em delay their moves till after Kessa.

Will Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

Aram's spell fails, while the rat that had been Zakli's target manages to shrug off the effects of his magic. Killian's strike also fails to hit home.

Kessa, meanwhile, manages with one deft swing to decapitate one of the creatures.

Stone dead, not even bleeding out.

Waiting on Ariela and Em. I will update Roll20 and move Killian's counter. EDIT: done.

Back from my conference!

Ariela moves from her position at the entrance and strides towards the enemies after Kessa attacks. Following the warpriest's lead, she pulls her rapier out and slashes at another of the creatures.

Do we have a knowledge check on these "rats"?

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

DC5, untrained OK:
They're dire rats, which are quite common in dungeons - basically giant rats.

DC10, untrained OK:
Their bite can cause a fever, which would take hold in a number of days and have debilitating effects on a character's health and agility.
