Delendir is busy most of the day sorting out all the stuff the group has earned and splitting the shares, as well as feeding Ghina and teaching her some new tricks. But some thing burns in his brain and hand as he touches the key he recovered from Ironbriar. Scared of what it can unveil it takes him a day to decide, but finally he attempts to discover what it might mean, by dealing a visit to the passed away elf house. He does not push things though.

As days pass and the group mets again with Shalelu, Delendir turns sad suddenly realizing he has not had time to mourn his passed away friend "All this horror has been jeopardizing all the people around us Shalelu. We have to finish this and it seems the sister of our enemy is living at the place you have been told to trip. I am glad to see you again, and I hope we can fight together the remains of this ill cult"

"Heavy hearts make poor companions for the road," Ragnhildr says sagely, "I am sorry that I have never known Tal, and I will miss both Jessica and Kiley, but we should be focusing on what's ahead, and readying ourselves for the trials to come."

Suddenly, a broad smile lightens the ulfen woman's expression. She pulls a package from the piling she'd placed it on and turns to Jessica.

"It's bad luck to begin a journey with hearts full of sorrow, so we need to ward it away," Ragnhildr says beaming as she unwraps the package and reveals an anchovy.

"Seeing as Grace was the last one of us to arrive, I think she should do the honors of eating the head," she says as she hold out the fish to the chelaxian diva.

Shalelu places a comforting hand on Grace's shoulder, touched by her words as they seemingly hit home with her as well. Turning to Delendir she nods, "No need to explain further. I am glad to see you as well, though I am not especially interested in locating a cult. I was hoping to make the trip to Rannick without incident. The silence of the men there has given me pause for concern and I find great comfort in your companionship on this journey."

When the mageknight offers the fish to Grace, the ranger thinks the tradition strange but understandable. She, as with all others present, turn to face Grace. "After you are finished with the honor we shall depart on the river. Originally he had instructed me to make the journey on foot which would have taken me a fortnight. Somehow you seem to have convinced him to book us passage on this barge all the way to Turtleback Ferry in half that time! I overheard the captain saying how happy he was to have pocketed four hundred gold for the travel. Please remind me to ask for instruction on your negotiation skills sometime!"

The elf turns back to Grace and says, "Apologies for interrupting, please continue."

"What a jerk" Elisai mutters, trying to keep her famous temper from spilling out of control. You and I both know that what happened was well within the past - I don't consider you owing anyone redemption, not with whats been achieved recently. Still, I could always have a private but significant word with hmi if you wanted, assuming he remains a bother."[/b]

Smiling politely at the ranger, Elisai quickly cuts in. "Good negotiation skills are rather simple, find something someone else wants more than what you are wanting, and then make the trade! Works every time".

He also prepares a comfortable place for Ghina and later looks to talk with the captain "So how calm is the way to Turtleback Ferry? What do we know of the place?"

I concur, we can look forward to Grace's amazing fish eating ritual spoiler ed at a later date and time. Now, we have a barge to ride!

Knowledge History DC15:
Fort Rannick is manned by the Order of the Black Arrow, a group of woodsmen who patrol that area on behalf of Magnimar.

Knowledge History DC20+:
The Order was established over forty years ago to halt the predations of the ogres of Hook Mountain after appeals and offers of submission from Turtleback Ferry to Magnimar. The Order then defeated and drove back the ogres, remaining to patrol and protect the region. Fort Rannick was constructed and occupied by the Order, and they operate largely independent of control from Magnimar. The Order has a reputation for harsh, swift but generally fair frontier justice and fierce, brutal discipline. Many of its members are former criminals or others with reasons to forget and escape their demons in the harsh environment of the wilds.

Along the way up the river to Turleback Ferry, Shalelu is very interested in your efforts while in Magnimar. She says, "Sandpoint is shaken but safe. Hemlock sends his greetings. He said there was dark tiding here in Magnimar but from the look of it, you have things in hand. What happened?"

The next week passes pleasantly on the boat, giving the party a chance to rest and relax for once. Setting off just after dawn, the boat paddles east up the Yondabakari River, driven by its golem-powered engines. To the north the land rises to the plains of lower Varisia, while to the south lie the foetid Mushfens. The river turns in slow, placid loops as the crew tend to the boat and watch out for potential hazards such as sandbanks, river pirates or boggard war parties.

But is it quiet and after two days the first sizable settlement is reached - Wartle, a mean township of trappers and swamp-dwellers perched on stilts above the ooze. The party enjoy a meal of roast ibis and river greens before spending the night on (sort of) dry land.

The next day the trip continues eastwards along the river. While the trackless Mushfens continue to lurk to the south, to the north sits the tangle of the immense Sanos Forest, reputedly home to fey and other silvan mysteries. The river runs along its most southerly flank, the stark, bare branches reaching out to the boat and dark shadows beyond the bankside drinking the wan sunlight. The boat chugs between swamp and forest for two days before reaching the next outpost on the river, Whistledown, home to a mixed human and gnome community and the largest concentration of windchimes in the whole of Varisia.

After a night of tinkling, clunking and clanging, the party are glad to head northeast across Lake Syrantula, a long lake which punctuates the Yondabakari for it hundred mile length. The boat hugs the north shore, leaving behind the swamps and the forest, reaching Ilsurian the same day, a town fiercely independent of both Magnimar and Korvosa.

Ilsurian lies at the mouth of the Skull River where it meets the lake, and the following day the boat embarks on the final leg of the journey. Paddling north, it winds between the forested hills of the Ashwood and eastern tracts of the Sanos Forest, skirting the boggy Shimmerglens before reaching Claybottom Lake. As the sun begins to set behind Hook Mountain, it reaches the north shore and Turtleback Ferry.

Where would you like to go first? You can drop some gather information rolls if you are clueless.

Yavenee muses aloud as they get underway.

During the long trip Krysta spent a great deal of time avoiding Shalelu. She didn't know the elf, and she knew the woman was far too perceptive. She felt sure the woman suspected that she wasn't what she appeared to be and didn't particularly feel like letting it be known what she was just yet. A few times, in the safer stops for the night, Krysta slipped away to re-take her normal form and hunt, something she didn't do often when at home in the temple but that she knew she must go out and hunt if she wished to hide her true nature as she required far more food than a normal humanoid could manage regardless of her current form.

When they finally arrived at Turrtleback Ferry, Krysta was rather relieved to be off of the boat. She listened to any information that her new traveling companions may have had and was more than ready to explore when she got the chance. She looked around as they stepped off and said, "So this is our destination huh?" Her shoulders shrugged causing her amethyst colored hair to ripple from the movement, "It doesn't look like all that." She turned her focus back to Shalelu and said, "Sooo, I take it we need information?"

Since gathering information was the thing now that they were here Krysta wandered off to try and find out what she could about events in the area. She wandered, more or less aimlessly, around the town as she sought any information dealing with the ogres or general trouble around the area and kept an eye out for the various ways out of the town should she need to use them.

A few months have passed since the events of the fateful swallowtail festival -- winter is now here and with it are the seasonal rains. This is the fourth day in a row that the rain has persisted and the ground is soaking wet, muddy and the mood is generally soured.

Delendir wrote:
"What do you know about Turtleback Ferry Shalelu? Do you know anyone there?"

Shalelu considers the question and looks uncomfortable for a moment before relenting. "There is a man I'm seeking, that is why I've offered to join you on this trip. I have a personal vested interest in speaking to one of the men of the Black Arrow there, a man named named Jakardros. I have questions for him." She offers no more on the man or the subject for the time being.

The group sets about town to try and pick up the local chatter and find an inn to stay out. With ease they discover there are two places to stay in town, though only one of them is really worth the price. They decide they will make their way there after questioning some of the locals. Krysta's practice at social interactions pays off and after asking around the small town, the young dragon quickly learns everything that is to know about the local happenings.

*Fort Rannick has been uncharacteristically quiet as of late. One or two of the rangers typically visits Turtleback Ferry every few days for supplies, news, or entertainment, but since the rains began in earnest several weeks ago, no one’s heard from the Black Arrows at all.

*The wilds nearby (particularly Kreegwood) have grown more dangerous. Wild animals like bears, firepelt cougars, and boars are becoming increasingly common along the edges of these woodlands, and several of Turtleback’s hunters and trappers believe these predators are being forced from the depths of the woodlands by the increased activity of local monsters like ogres, trolls, and worse. Earlier in the week, a patrol headed north to try to make contact with Fort Rannick, but it never returned.

*Paradise a gambling hall/brothel operating out of a river barge in the middle of Claybottom Lake burned to cinders recently. On top of depriving folks of a good time, several regulars died when they were trapped on board.

After spending some time out and about in the rain, you finally make your way to the one of the inns in the small village. There are several locals gathered about chatting about the wet weather as you enter. They pause to take note of your group before continuing on their discussion ignoring you.

Perception DC30:
You notice something peculiar about a middle-aged red-haired man holding a broom who is currently engaged in discussion with three other men. A disturbing tattoo hidden on the small of the back is exposed for a moment, just a moment when the man bends over to pick up a broom he just dropped. The tattoo is a seven pointed star - the same star the group saw used by goblins and murderers the last several weeks.

Delendir observes the group back, and supposes the attention is due to being strangers "Good morning good lads"

He comments to the group in whispers "If the sister Xanesha is to be here, we shall prepare for more cultists appearing to be what they are not"

To the barman he requests "A large pint of mead please!" and when the man or woman comes he asks "How are things going here? Any disappearance as of late?" trying to find a link to the cult.

And to the group "It seems so far the best thing we have to do here is to try visit that Fort Rannick and find out what has been on them. Most probably the rains uncommunicated the place"

Krysta eventually met back up with her companion at the inn to discuss what she'd found out. She sat at the table and waited for food to be brought out as they discussed thing and listened to Delendir as he spoke quietly. Once he'd finished she began to speak, not bothering to keep her voice lowered, hiding in plain sight had worked nicely for her after all, "I found out that Fort Rannick has been uncharacteristically quiet of late bu no one has heard from them since the rains started. I also found out that the wilderness has become more dangerous. Predators that normally live deeper in the wilderness have become more common on the fringes and the hunters believe that something even worse has pushed them from their normal territories, ogres or trolls possibly. Earlier this week a patrol tried to go to the fort but hasn't been heard from since." She paused a moment and took a drink of the mead that had been brought for them, her face crinkling up at the taste of it before taking another drink, "Hmmm, different." She shook her head a second, her amethyst locks rippling, and continued, "The last tidbit I discovered was that a place called Paradise, a gambling hall/brothel on a river barge in Claybottom Lake burned to cinders recently killing several of the regular patrons when it did."

The large pot-bellied barman slaps a large mug of mead down for all that ask. He claims, "Atta be six copper each, ya hear? Where you passin' through to now, hmmm?"

The large barkeep raises both his eyebrows, "Disappearances you say? Hmmn now, can't be saying I'm aware of any strange disappearances. We ain't a lotta folk here in Turtleback, I'd be thinking I'da know if we had disappearances. The only disappearin' recently was the folk that died when that barge sank up in Claybottom is all. "Not exactly," Ragnhildr says as sips the mead. "We're here to see about Fort Rannick and do whatever else we can to help around town. What else can you tell us about the Kreegwood? Delendir is disrupted when the death of the people at the gambling place is raised "That's terrible. Are the waters here that dangerous?"

He takes the mead and pays the copper coins "We are a group of adventurers" adds the half-elf to Ragnhildr's words.

"Is there a guide able to guide us to the fort helping us avoid the dangers of the rainy season? or at least a map?" says the ranger then looks to the group "I guess the earliest we get to the fort the soonest we will get to the bottom of all this business"

TG1 | GW | FF | RH

The barman looks down at the silvers and is about to palm them when a man to the left of Ragnhildr puts his hand on the silvers first. The barman frowns but lets it go, clearly not willing to contest the man. He speaks without the accent of the barkeep with city-accented proper speech from somewhere off to the east. "The Kreegwood is a small Varisian woodland tucked between the much larger Ashwood to its east and the Sanos Forest to its west. To its north lie the westernmost peaks of the Wyvern Mountains, which includes Hook Mountain, where the Kreeg family of ogres once made their home. It is from these giants that the Kreegwood gets its name. Directly south of the Kreegwood lies Claybottom Lake and this lovely town named Turtleback Ferry. Lake Coal and the Shimmerglens can be found directly west and southwest of the Kreegwood respectively."

The big man ignores the knowledgeable patron and nods to Delendir, "Anyways then, Nah, the waters ain't usually being dangerous. It was an unfortunate accident you see. The Paradise, that wsa the floating barge converted into a gamblin house and drinking hall, anyways she sank in an accident."

Sense Motive or Perception DC19:
At the mention of the Paradise sinking, no less than six men in the establishment pull their sleeves down, sink back into their chairs, try to fall into the shadows or generally act uneasy with the conversation.

"Right, now then. I can't say I being been up to Fort Rannick myself, but I am surin' we can find you some directions there. The best idear might be to hang tight here in Turtleback until the rangers come 'round for supplies." As if considering what he just said he scratches his chin and frowns. "Though. If they being quite like they been lately, mayhaps that ain't the right solution."

The man who spoke before, an unshaven, burly middleaged man who looks his adventuring days are behind him, finishes the last of his mug and clears his throat loudly. He then tips his empty mug to you and says, "My guide days are behind me, but if you refill that mug of mine and buy me some dinner, I'll give you the best route to Rannick."

Assuming the party compiles at least with the mug refill.

"Thanks, let's get you on your way then, shall we? Here's what you need to do. I'd say that the simplest route to the fort is to follow an old road leading up along the banks of the Skull River. The road crosses an old wooden bridge about three miles north of here. Follow that up to the side road, that'll lead you right to Rannick. If ya pass the old ruins of Skull's Crossing, that be the name of the massive arch dam that holds back the water of the Storval Deep there, you gone too far. Doubleback and look out for that trail, it's about, oh maybe three miles before the dam."

Ragnhildr pays out a another silver to buy the man a drink and a meal.

"Thank you," She says sincerely to the old guide as she stands to leave, leaving a stack of silver for him, "may Desna bless you with good fortune."

Anyone wanting to stay?

Krysta noticed the patrons that reacted to the conversation and made sure to mark their location in her mind for the moment. When the man had finished with the conversation, given them the directions, and left, Krysta leaned in and said quietly to her companions, "There are several men who weren't happy we were talking about the pleasure barge. They all pulled their sleeves down and tried to sink into the woodwork to hide." She lightly drew a short line in the direction of each person to indicate their directions and after each line she traced a number.

Bluff to pass secret message: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (19) + 16 = 35

The line is direction and the number is the distance.

"What do you mean by 'if they being quite like they been lately'?" asks Delendir "Have they not been behaving like they used before?"

To Ragnhildr the half-elf says "I agree, something is going on and we should leave as soon as possible", then he turns to the old guide and thanks him for the information.

Waiting to see if someone else reacts to Krysta's information, we should probably question one of those "hiding" men

Ragnhildr, an easy, slightly wolfish smile on her face doesn't bother asking, she just does. The white-haired woman saunters up to two of the men that are sitting together and close to the path they'd need to take to get out. She claps the two of them on the shoulder and guides them out of their seats and towards the door.

"I hope yer tabs paid up, cuz I've been cooped up too long on a ol' riverboat bored outta me skull," she says loudly as she drapes her arms over their shoulders. "Care t'join me in havin' a little fun?"

Hoping that Ragnhildr's personality will be enough to cow them until we can get them someplace quiet to ask some questions.

The men that Ragnhildr dragged out of the bar clearly have had a few ales in them as they attempt to swing and retaliated only to fumble badly and windmill to the ground. "Hey! Let me go!" one yells while the other fusses with the mageknight. "We ain't done nothing! Help! Call for help! We bein' taken!"

The first man that tumbles to the ground slides on the dirt and his shirt rides halfway up his belly. In the middle of his back you see a familiar symbol, the seven pointed sihedron star. The star is in the shape of a somewhat recent tattoo, perhaps two or three weeks at most.

As Ragnhildr and Yavenee leave the tavern, Delendir places more mead in his cup and in an attempt to distract the attention of the other clients from the leaving people, he makes his voice up "So rain, skulls, missing fort guards, sunk gamble barges, is there no place for a traveller to have some cheering up fun in this small spot of land?"

Krysta considered what she should do now. It was strange, this being part of a team, she was used to being on her own in almost all things and just couldn't grasp this teamwork thing. She was debating whether to go or to stay when she decided that, just maybe, she should ask. She turned her gaze to Delendir and asked simply, "Should I go with them or stay here?"

The man grimaces and is attempting to resist Ragnhildr's question until Yavenee eases the way with her magical skills. The man's tense posture softens and he sits up on the ground, looking up at his "friend". "Oh that thing? It's not a big deal. I got it a few months back at Paradise. That was the floating barge converted into a gambling and drinking hall. You know, the one they were talking about in there. Anyways, by allowing the lovely owner to place the tattoo on me for a small fee, I could then show the tattoo at Paradise's door and avoid paying hte cover fee to board! Great deal, I know a buncha fellas that opted in on that. Besides, if you showed the "Paradise's Mark" you could get special rewards like additional gambling chips or drinks."

"Uh huh," Ragnhildr says before letting go and leaving Yavenee to it. She knows that she's not like the witches and hags up north, but she still gets the willies whenever she brought out her bag of tricks.

"Sounds like you had a good deal. What happened to the barge?" Yavennee asks resting her hands on his knees and leaning forward with a smile.

The man shakes his head slowly side to side, clearly saddened by the memory. "Indeed it was a great deal. There was a fire that took the barge suddenly, many were and severely injured. Lucky for me I was out working that night instead, eh? The accident was such a travesty, not to mention two dozen fine men perished in it! "

Meanwhile, inside the tavern Delendir keeps talking "So, have you ever heard of Sandpoint's demon? It has fire at his eyes, and erupts rays through his ass. Not surprised? You have to see Venn Vinder when some male talks with his daughter. Now that is the real Sandpoint's demon"

He drinks another cup of mead.

By the time his friends should have returned from their interrogation, he leaves a couple silver coins over the table, thanks the people at the tavern and heads out "So, let's see where our friends have got from this town and head towards the fort"

With no instructions otherwise Krysta decided it was best to stay with Delendir and Sunday so their group didn't get too split up. She listened to the half-elf tell his story and found herself confused, she couldn't have heard that right and asked with a look of confusion, "So the Venn is the demon? But only when males look at his daughter...? I don't get it, why would looking at his daughter matter?" Still, she rose and followed Delendir after he paid and wondered still what the answer to her question was.

"Yes it really is a tragedy, you don't think....somone would have done something horrible like that on purpose do you?" Yavenee asks softly.

TG1 | GW | FF | RH

Several of the men inside seem to be drawn in by Delendir's story. "Sandpoint, yeah, we heard of lots of going on in Sandpoint!" one nods along while others fall in, ignoring the disappearance of their companions. Within a few minutes, the men are asking for more tales of the fiersome Venn Vinder and the ass-firing Sandpoint demon.

Meanwhile outside, the man appears genuinely sad. "Tell me about it! The gambling was good, the women were, uh, erm, never mind. I love my wife, yes sir to the Gods I do! So yeahs, I don't think anyone would do that on purpose. Surely it was an accidental fire is all. Sometimes that happens. Shame it was, just a shame. Haven't seen Lady Lucrecia since the blaze neither."

"Lady Lucrecia?" Elisai asks curiously, choosing to hang off the edge of the mans arm, appearing engrossed in his words. "I must admit, I hadn't heard anything about a Lady in these parts, who was she?"

TG1 | GW | FF | RH

The man pivots to Elisai and nods. "For sure, it's strange. But she was the proprietor of Paradise. Why, she personally applied my tattoo for me as well. It was such an honor to have her do it." A frown crosses his face and he shakes his head, "Shame she died in the accident. Such a beautiful woman! Boy did she know what the men around here needed!" He clears his throat and adds, "I love my wife though, you know I'm a happily married man and all. I was just saying."

"Of course, I can see that", Elisai remarks kindly, sure that the disappearance of Lucrecia should probably be investigated but judging the man to have little information on the topic. Unsure how to proceed, she simply nods after her sentence and steps back.

We should probably investigate the Arrows / Fort at some stage...
