Waiting for the briefing is a muscular half-elf in need of a good bath. His hair is matted but well-groomed, and decorated here and there with feathers and small bones. Where metal armor would be, his torso is instead covered in what appear to be stiff, tightly-interwoven leaves. He is armed with a sling and a large sword, but carries no shield.

You all received a missive from Venture-Captain Jorsal, requesting that you make your way to the Mendevian village of Gundrun, which lies just within the border. With no time to lose you make your way to Mendev by hook or by crook.
Gundrun is a ramshackle village built on the remains of a once proud clanhold, yet it’s among the few proper settlements that eke out a living in what was once Sarkoris. From the rough yet sturdy buildings, a Mwangi man bedecked in polished, nearly golden plate armor emblazoned with the holy symbol of Iomedae steps onto the dirt road and approaches with a friendly wave. It’s Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury.
“Pathfinders, it’s good to see you again. Walk with me, if you will,” Jorsal requests as he turns toward a crude wooden structure.
Then he gives a quick signal to a standing guard and opens the door, motioning inwards.
“Though the Pathfinder Society doesn’t have an official lodge here in Gundrun, the locals have allowed us to use part of Clefthorn Lodge as a war room to discuss upcoming missions and objectives. Please take a seat.”
As the room begins to fill, he closes the door behind him and makes his way to a small desk, where a large parchment map supports a host of red and blue figurines.
“During the First Mendevian Crusade, an Iomedaean cleric named Ghalcor and his assistants built a once-secret weapon to combat the encroaching demonic threat; however, the fighting ended before he could put it to use. I say ‘once-secret’ because the demons heard about the weapon and attacked the tower when combat resumed years later. It seems Ghalcor was caught off-guard. He and his team died in the assault, but not before they triggered special safeguards to keep anyone from capturing the weapon—demon, crusader, or otherwise. Since the weapon was never used, no one knows quite what it does or even how it works. What we do know is that we’ve spotted demons scouting the site as if they intend to break in soon. I trust you understand how that could be worrisome.”
He picks up several of the blue figurines and moves them from Gundrun to a site labeled ‘Ghalcor’s Tower.’
“Queen Galfrey has sent some of her forces to hold the area around Ghalcor’s Tower, but she needs specialists to find a way in. You,” he says with pride, “are those specialists.
Travel north to the tower, enter it, handle any hostiles, and find out how the weapon works; you may also be called on to arm and even activate it, if circumstances demand. A brigade of Nerosyan’s crusaders is already on-site awaiting your arrival, and the esteemed Ollysta Zadrian is due to arrive soon with a small contingent to reinforce their position. She may have more details once you arrive. Make haste, and may the Inheritor guide your actions.”

You have some time to ponder what you know/ ask questions
Mariel Aldalinde |
A young woman with platinum blonde hair arrives, clad in shining plate armor, a small shield bearing the symbol of Iomedae strapped to her arm. She looks ready for battle, with several weapons on her belt and strapped to her back. She has the looks of a full-blooded elf, but shows none of the grace associated with the race. As she walks, rather clumsily, she can be heard talking, to herself apparently. "Really Asherah, I though we had been over this. Yes, I know about my roots, and I am very grateful for your assistance. I really want to help you, as well. But I have a life of my own, you must understand. And I've pledged that life to the Inheritor. That's not something I can just walk away from." She sighs and throws her hands in the air after a gust of wind comes along that leaves her hair in a disheveled state. she resumes her talk, not so much angry, but pleading "Honestly, I'm really trying to get along, you know that. And what do I get in return? You turn all my words into whispers and whistles. That wasn't nice of you." She turns her head, involving an apparant third party. "Haephor, can't you talk to her, make her understand that I'm really trying? Yes, I know you're just a simple man, and you don't get involved in discussions like those. I understand." She sighs again, tries to put her hair back in order and steps up for her meeting with the Venture-Captain.

The half-elven woman greets Jorsal of Lauterbury with an impressed smile and a hand held over her heart. "Mariel Aldeline, Sir. It's my pleasure to work with you, and to do my part in the Crusade." Her words sound a tad naive, but heartfelt. She listens intently to the Venture-Captain, nodding gravely at certain points. She looks a bit embarrassed, realizing that she's never heard of Ghalcor or his work, despite that fact that he must have been an important figure. "Sir, if I may... Have any previous attempts been made to enter the Tower? You say that Ghalcor and his team died in the assault. Have their remains been extracted, afterwards? Or should we also look out for those, to give him a proper burial, after all those years?"
Mariel looks at the map, very eager and trying to come up with more questions. "Can we expect trouble on our way to the tower? And do we know what kinds of demons have been scouting the site? Will we need to make special preparations to deal with them?"
Wembly Templeton |
You hear and see a gnome and large green cat running towards the group.
Oh Whiskers here we are! I feared we had missed it.
Wembly is young for a gnome. He is casually dressed, in clothes that do not seem to fit, and maybe have been slept in more than once too often. His hair is badly in need of a comb, but he seems oblivious to his appearance while his eyes dart back and forth from his strange green cat, to the sky and back. His mind is definitely not focused on the here and now, as he smiles caught in his own thoughts.
Mariel Aldalinde |
The disheveled appearance of the young gnome bring out big-sister feelings in Mariel. She waves and greets him with a warm smile, restraining herself to straightens the young lad's hair. "Hi there, little fellow. i'm Mariel. Come, you're not too late late. The Venture-Captain was just explaining our mission. What a nice cat you have. That green fur, though... Is he some kind of gnome-cat...?" She looks off to the side and hisses under her breath. "Yes, Asherah. I know I'm not good with animals. No need to remind me."
All conversation with spirits is in italic. Mariel's whispers are usually loud enough to be heard by those around her, so feel free to respond or ignore, as you'd like.
Sethran-GM |
Venture-Captain Jorsal greets Mariel warmly and is about to respond to Mariel when Wembly crashes the party. Frowning slightly at the tardiness of the Gnome the crusader Captain composes himself and brings his attention back to the Oracle, overlooking her strange whispers.
"Unfortunately, I have no records of any previous attempts into the tower. Before now we have never been at such a stalemate with the Demonic horde assaulting Mendev. Any ground we gain on the demons, they gain back in another area. By capturing this weapon, we hope to gain significant momentum and conclude the crusade quickly.”
Dumm |
Are the others joining us? Three doesn't really a party make, cat and invisible friends notwithstanding.
As usual, the names and historical references go above Dumm's head. "These deads, they stay dead I hope? If we find they? In other missions I saw before many deads that no stay dead but walk again." He shivers slightly. The worst part is, I'm the only one who even seems to care. Other Pathfinders hardly think twice about it. "What this weapon looks like? Is big?"
Wembly Templeton |
May need to PM the others as this game started a bit late and may have fallen off their campaign lists .
Wembly smiles and nods to Mariel before going back to listen to the discussion on this weapon.
"Sounds fascinating. Would you know how to operate it?"
Turning back to Mariel with a whisper
"He is not a gnome cat but I think from the Fey First World. He seems to have a bond with me I cannot explain ."
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel looks shocked at Dumm's suggestion. "Undead? Could it really be that Ghalcor and his team have been there all this time, and have turned to ghosts in the meantime." Her shock makes way for determination. "If it is, that's all the more reason to go!"
She then looks around herself, and checks her equipment. "Sir, I believe I might not be properly equipped yet. Haephor was teaching me how to forge in cold iron, but I haven't made anything proper yet." She looks embarrassed at her failure. "Do you... Could I have the opportunity to acquire something more suited for what we're about to face?"
Any opportunities for last-minute shopping? Also, I'd second the request for some more players.
Sethran-GM |
I have sent some PMs and will chase Isonda in the morning
Jorsal turns to Wembly first and shakes his head sadly, the Venture Captain's reply is hopeful however.
"“If there is documentation about how the weapon works anywhere, it’s likely in the tower. I have faith that with a little ingenuity and skill, you will succeed.”
He then turns to Mariel and answers the Orcale's question.
"You can indeed purchase Weapons and supplies here in Gundrun. However, the War has created a shortage and the town's stock levels are not what they used to be."
You can purchase anything here with a maximum purchase limit of 750gp
Wembly Templeton |
Wembly will definitely be interested in buying a cold iron spear and likewise some bolts when Mariel goes shopping.
Hakime |
A tiefling woman of indeterminate age comes into the Lodge, her bearing almost regal, but at the same time casual. She is unarmored but wearing elegant clothing that bears the form of fine tooled leather if not the function. Small horns grace the sides of her head and her eyes are quite odd, being blue on blue with pupils in the shape of hourglasses. She bears a finely made composite longbow bearing the symbol of Erastil inlaid in beautiful contrasting woods and ivory. Several quivers bristle with arrows. She also bears a longsword and mace, neither of which show much sign of use.
She greets the Venture Captain with a slight bow. Greetings, SIr, and my apologies for my late arrival... The caravan I was traveling with had a little trouble on the road and were delayed. So, what did I miss?"
-----
After being filled in on the details, she listens attentively for Jorsal's response to the questions already put forth.
-----
"Might I ask, Sir, what sorts of demons have been seen scouting the area? It would be helpful to know what we might be facing before acquiring appropriate gear and preparing appropriate spells."
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel stares openly at the strange woman joining the group, not unkind but simply trying to make sense of the woman. Horns means she has some kind of demon or devil in her blood, right? She shivers, but quickly reminds herself. Nonsense. Everyone can make their own way in the world, regardless of their ancestry. I don't have to be good at archery, and a person like that wouldn't have to cast destruction on the entire world. She puts a smile on her face as she addresses the newcomer. "Welcome, it'll be good to have as many agents as we can, I think. Breaking into a base - or fortress - that was once beset by demons, and is rumoured to harbor some powerful weapon?" She shivers, touches the holy symbol around her neck and then right herself, storing away her fears.
Mariel will buy a (non-masterwork) cold iron longsword and 2 vials of holy water.
Dumm |
Dumm sniffs the air. The horns aren't human, but she doesn't smell like an animal. Since only Mariel seems to find this odd, he ignores it for now. "If is no-- explode bomb," he says slowly, looking for words, "or if hurts demons only and no hurt we, then maybe we will are safe," he assures Mariel. "And maybe it no works, even. Nobody knows."
Isonda |
I'm almost updated from my IRL play. I just want to make sure my resources have been tracked properly then i'll transfer my character over from Hero Lab. At work right now but i wanted to post something so you all know i'm still alive :P
Isonda |
A young halfing girl limps in to the room going even slower than the average member of her short legged race. She wears heavier armour made from many small segments of steel that has the distinct look of armour crafted in Tian Xia. Her blonde hair is long but tied back away from her face that seems to glow with a combination of enthusiasm and embarrassment.
"I'm sorry i am late everyone. Through a combination of my own slow walking pace and a newly acquired mount my journey took much longer than i had planned for. She beams a big smile at everyone in the room as she makes her way to an open seat and awkwardly climbs up the human sized piece of furniture.
"Oh... I suppose i should tell you who i am! I am Isonda, friend of animals and people alike. I've come quite far from my homeland of Tian Xia but i do so enjoy travelling and helping folks out when they're in a pickle."
She quickly catches up on details of the mission and her eagerness never seems to wain, even at the mention of demons.
"I've never been called a specialist before. I hope me and Scratchings can all live up to the expectations of Queen Galfrey and yourself Venture-Captain."
Sethran-GM |
Jorsal greets the new arrivals, a small frown from the late departures evident but he soon works past it. Shaking his head to the final questions he is apologetic as he replies.
"Unfortunately we have no knowledge of the foes you may face inside the Tower. As for Demons outside they are far too numerous to fill you in on. There is a camp of Silver Crusaders near the tower which will act as your staging post and they have been keeping the area clear.
The tower is 20 Miles away, however I have called in an ally who will be able to get you there quickly."
The Venture-Captain leads you out into the village and waits patiently as you purchase extra provisions for the journey. When you are prepared he knocks on the door of a non-descript door and as greeted by a woman in a black mask. She says very little, but one look at the number of you causes her to whisper furiously to the Venture Captain who in turn gives her a bag of coins.
Taking a deep breath and focusing her powers, the Spellcaster chants and summons Phantom Steeds for you all, shrinking to Pony size for the smallest of you. She also brings her magic to enhance the speed of any mounts, so they are not left behind.
"Good Luck Pathfinders, may the Inheritor guide your way" The Venture Captain says as he waves you off.
Sethran-GM |
The blinding speed of the Mounts causes miles of blasted, tainted land to pass you by. There is very little sign of life here and what does reside here will surely be twisted by the Worldwound's influence. It is not too long until you see signs of a great outcropping of large weathered rocks in the distance. The only landmark around for some distance you head towards it, the eerie steeds moving without complaint or noise.
Within 100 feet of the tower, the outcroppings change to reveal an Octagonal keep of smoothed stone with a central tower piercing the sky. From this distance you can see no obvious entrance to the tower, no Gatehouse is built into the structure.
Around the base of the tower is a grand Palisade crowned with spikes unmistakably made of Cold Iron. The sounds of what must be hundreds of Crusaders can be heard from the camp, talking, the clash of arms from the practice arenas and the neighing of horses can be heard. At the gate two Sentries stand guard, wearing the heraldry of the Silver Crusade, gleaming Cold Iron Weapons in hand. Behidn them a dozen or so members of the crusade can be seen leaning over a table, discussing battle plans.
"Halt and Identify yourselves!" Says one of the two guards, his eyes scanning your party as you feel the tingle of magic wash over you.

Sifvery Moon |
Arriving just before mounting the phantom steeds is a tall wisp of an elven lady with long, silver hair. Her bright blue eyes appear to have specs of silver within. She is thin, almost frail, and there are faint tattoos on her face and arms. She carries a longbow made of darkwood, and a spear.
"I just heard... demons... I dropped everything and came as quick as I could! I am called Sifvery Moon, and I am anxious to get underway."

Approaching the guards, she stops and let's them scan her. Then she does the same to them. Detect Evil.
Hakime |
"I am Hakime, servant of Erastil and Pathfinder... we were sent here by the Society to find a way into the tower, find Ghalcor's weapon and make it work," says the unarmored tiefling.
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel greets the halfing girl with the limp leg, then introduces the group as far as she knows their names. She leans forward at the porcupine squeel, curiously trying to see what kind of creature 'Scratchings' could be.
She nods at the last information that the Venture-Captain can provide, then follows him outside. Mariel, already having proven herself as clumsy, is none too eager to mount the quasi-real horse. She steels herself and gets on with a little help, then finds to her relief that she isn't that bad a rider. "Yes, I am sure it helps that it's not a real animal. Thanks for reminding me, Asherah," she remarks wearily, baited again by her most troublesome spirit.
As they arrive at the Palisade, Mariel looks up in awe, comforted by the sound of the many crusaders and the look of the mighty defenses. "Mariel Aldelinde, Pathfinder agent," Mariel identifies herself as she puts a hand over her heart in salute. "We were sent here by Venture-Captain Jorsal of Lauterbury. We're here to rendezvous with Ollysta Zadrian. Has she arrived yet?"
No evil aura here.
Wembly Templeton |
Welcome Isonda. I am Wembly, and this is Whiskers. And he has whiskers, so the name kinda fits, wouldn't you say? I named him myself,as I am not sure if he already had a name. Although I guess two names is ok too. as he scratches the green planar cat.
Sethran-GM |
No evil auras
The two guards look at each other and are about to answer when there is a loud commotion behind them, it would appear Ollystra has heard of your arrival as she is moving through the camp towards the gate. Signalling to the gate guards, the retired Pathfinder looks you all up and down and nods. Waving you into the Camp, Ollystra leads you to a tent with a sturdy table in it and not much else. When you are all in she begins without much preamble.
"Thank you for coming on such short notice Pathfinders" Ollysta states calmly. "I hope that Venture Captain Jorsal explained the situation to you fully because the demonic scouts that we found surveying the tower have sent reinforcements. Our movements have not gone unnoticed and we spotted a large contingent of demons and fiend-spawn moving this way.
They are more numerous that we had anticipated, so we are relying on you to secure and prepare Ghalcor's weapon. I intend to assist in the defence of the camp and everyone here is placing their faith in your success. Venture-Captain Jorsal chose each of you for a reason and I am confident in his decision."
With that she dons her helmet, walks out of the tent and calls to her crusaders. Ollystra's Crusaders form a circle around her and the Paladin gestures to Mariel, Isonda and Hakime to join them. After they are assembled, she addresses the gathered Crusaders.
"Without a doubt the evil we face today is a challenge. It is a challenge of our skill at arms and we shall be victorious. It is a challenge of our Valour and we shall bravely face the most dreadful threats as a united whole. Last of all, it is a challenge of our grace, for the Silver Crusade fights here not to conquer but to liberate. Do everything that you can to ensure that the weapon within this tower does not fall into the hands of the demons.
Go and bring light to this forsaken land. I trust each of you to do what you believe is right in accomplishing this goal, for the Society is watching and judging the merits of good by your actions!"
At the end of the speech, Ollystra gives the Silver Crusaders a hearty pat on the back and nudges them back to their gathered Pathfinders. It is clear she has no time to talk with the horde of Demons on their way.
Ahead Ghalcor's Tower looms, seemingly impregnable.
Who has a Wayfinder?
Hakime |
i keep forgetting to get one
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel swallows when she realizes that the task may be even more difficult than it had originally seemed. She tries to keep a brave face, and some unheard words bring a stern smile to her face. "Thank you, Brom. I know you will..."
Mariel follows her faction leader outside, standing proud in the circle of crusaders. She listens attentively to the speech, taking the words to mind. For victory, for the heart!
She then returns to the rest of their group. "We should get going," she remarks. "Time may be short."
Mariel has a Wayfinder.
Hakime |
"I agree... time is of the essence for this task... We must gather our companions and get to it." Hakime looks grimly at the fortress... "Do we have any idea how to get in yet?"
Isonda |
I thought Isonda had a wayfinder but it appears she doesn't. That's something she will have to fix at a later point.
"It's good to see you again Miss Ollystra Sir... Ma'am...err... says Isonda with unpractised salute.
"I'm sorry, i'm not very good at this military stuff, but i'm here to help how i can and defeat whatever evils we shall face while securing our objective! Isonda's confidence returns as her determination shines through.
She then turns to Mariel and Hakime.
"I believe you're both correct. This mission certainly seems to be time sensitive and we should not delay!"
Dumm |
Dumm does not have a Wayfinder.
Dumm stays mostly quiet during introductions and the giving of orders. Probably best to let the others do the talking. At the woman's speech about the incoming horde, he wonders whether they'll encounter any of the creatures or not, and whether the weapon will help them after all. I wonder what demon tastes like.
He eyes the tall stone side of the tower. "Maybe a door is on top. Maybe we can climb the side?"
Sethran-GM |
Leaving the palisade encampment, the Pathfinders hear the Silver Crusaders getting ready for conflict, armour being buckled into place and the priests performing one last sermon and blessing before battle is joined with the demonic invaders.
With no other lead than to examine the tower you press on and indeed you find that the tower has no obvious entrance and is surrounded by a magical barrier so powerful it leaves a haze in the air. Moving closer, Wembley and Mariel notice that their Wayfinders begin to pulse, the needle of the compass spinning wildly.
Looking at the tower, the force field also seems to shimmer in time with the pulses, emanating from a point on the barrier that glows brightly as the Wayfinders get closer.
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel studies the barrier with interest. "So, this is what has been keeping the demons at bay all this time. But Ghalcor must have wanted someone to get to his weapon eventually, wouldn't he? So there has to be a way in. Could it be over there, connected to our Wayfinders somehow?"
She walks to the part of the barrier glowing brightest and, with some gestures and a quick prayer, looks for the presence of magic.

"Oh i really should pick up my wayfinder from my confirmation, but each time i'm in Absolom something crazy ends up happening to distract me. I'm glad some of of you are better organised than i am!
Wembly Templeton |
Wow, that is an interesting effect on Wayfinders. I am glad I had one. I mean I am still sad we do not all have one. I could loan mine to someone if we need one for each to proceed
Wembly stops and tries to cover/uncover his wayfinder, blocking it in his bag or haversack to see how it affects the glow pulsing or needle spinning.
Oops. Sorry. I am ready to go.
Sethran-GM |
Sorry I have been rotten
Mariel and Sifvery cast their spells whilst Wembly fumbles for his own Wayfinder. Mariel can detect an overwhelming force of Divine might behind the barrier but is unable to discern much about it, though as she gets closer the pulses of the Wayfinder's increase. Sifvery finds no evil locked within the Barrier's creation, though the ground itself resonates from the infestation of the Worldwound.
As the three bearers close in on the Tower, the Barrier is visibly pushed back into the Stone tower, revealing a hidden door in the Stonework, which swings open to admit you all.
Does not need a Wayfinder apiece, so you can all enter. Note: Whilst there are torch sconces at regular intervals with ever burning torches present, these seem drained of energy. Therefore the Tower is Dim Light unless stated otherwise.
A curving corridor angles to the north before disappearing around a bend. The walls and floors bear gashes and holes, bearing testament to a terrible battle long ago and a mass of corpses - some humanoid, some demonic though all dead - litter the cold, tiled floor.

Mariel looks in awe at the effect of their Wayfinders. "They must have known we would come for the weapon, and adjusted their defenses accordingly. Isn't that clever?"
At they enter the tower, Mariel draws her sword and prays briefly before light springs from the blade. She cautiously moves forward. "So many demons. There's dretches, and succubi, and babau..." She looks proud at being able to identify them. "Thank you, Dalagriel. I did study hard before coming here."

I have rolled Perception to save time, in future could you include Perception checks on your posts if you are exploring
You make your way through the Temple's corridors, looking at the bodies of the fallen Demons and Crusaders locked in their final battle. Paying perhaps more attention to the dead than where they are going Isonda stands on a trap plate hidden in the floor. Holding your breath for a moment all you hear is a loud dry click, the trap long since spent.
This reminds you to be vigilant however and for good reason as Mariel and Sif spot another trap-plate in the floor, narrowly preventing Hakime from triggering it. Looking up the pair discern a slot in the wall where something would fall from, but they are able to attempt to disable the trap.

"Nice armor, and some healing potions. If no one wants it, I will don the armor."
Mariel Aldalinde |
"Yikes," Mariel remarks when they fail to see the first trap, and are lucky that it's a dud. "We should have known there were safety measures. I'm guessing our Wayfinders won't be able to deal with all of them."
Her words comes true when they find the second pressure plate. "So, how do we deal with this one? Do we plug the hole in the wall, or fix the pressure plate in place? I'm not really good with stuff like this."
No Disable device here.
"I would like one of those healing potions," Mariel suggests carefully. "I have a... tendency to get hit when we're fighting."
Isonda |
"Well spotted you two! I'm afraid myself and scratchings aren't very good with mechanical things like this either. I don't need any potions as i haven't used any spells today so i'm ready to use healing magic if we get in any trouble. I also have this.."
Isonda flicks her wrist and a wand flies out from her sleeve and almost escapes her grasp.
"Oh that always happens. This is my healing wand. And don't worry it hasn't got away from me yet!" she says with a slight giggle.
Wembly Templeton |
I will keep my wayfinder handy. It seems to help us. I suspect these demons did not have one.
It would have handy if they did. Well, not that we wanted them to survive, no. But if they did we could pick it up.
Feel free to wear the armor. It will not fit me anyway.
And I like to stay in the back. But riding Whiskers, I usually end up in the thick of things.
The gnome takes a breath and scratches his chin.
I am glad some of you are good at spotting traps. I am not much good with finding them....other than the wrong way. Nor can I do much to bypass them.
Dumm |
No Disable Device here either. Aside from, you know, barbarian-style.
"Can throw deads onto the trap? Then it will shoot the deads and no shoot we."
Hakime |
no disable here either
Hakime just attempts to avoid any traps since no one seems to be able to disable them.
perception, taking 10: 10 + 12 = 22 hopefully that is enough to spot a trap or two...
Mariel Aldalinde |
Mariel looks around for a solution, but doesn't find an easy one. "Yours is probably the best idea yet, Dumm. Would be funny, if the demon corpses helped us reach the weapon." Mariel looks for a way around the pressure plate. If there isn't one, she'll move to plan B and work with Dumm to shove a demon corpse onto it. "Everyone, stay back. We have no idea what will happen."
