A while ago, I ran a recruitment for a child-themed adventure, that would then turn into Rise of the Runelords. As it turns out, the module I waned to use as a prologue was a lot harder than expected to adapt to Sandpoint, the game went sleepy and people disappeared. BUT! I still like the idea, so I'll look for FOUR more perky children to face the dangers of the Runelords.
At least for the first levels, I'd like to keep an atmosphere of wonder, fascination and exploration: Golarion is a beautiful world and adventuring is fun, so it will be a bit more light-hearted than written: and even if there are bad things, darkness will not overcome the light in our hearts.
The current lineup has a Slayer and a Shaman, so you can go wild with the characters you want. And I don't much care for party balance. Rules are underwards.
I'll set a soft deadline for applications (no new applications after that point on January 16, and a hard one for January 20. It should be enough time.
Character Creation:
Race: Any Core, Featured, Kitsune, Samsarans, Suli, Changelings, Grippli, Vanara. If you want to reflavour a race, or try your hand at the Race Builder, drop me a message, but keep it believable and flavor over all, let's not make a full-Moogles party (though it could be an idea).
Starting Age: In human terms, between 8 and 14. Read below for details on other races.
Rule Override: Age: Curse the long-lived races and their slow growth, throwing everything out of sync. Let's just handwave and have them age at the same speed as humans. Even if young, you are still your natural size (this is a change from the previous set of rules).
Point Buy: 12 pts. You'll get some extra advancement as you grow up, though. You can dump abilities if you want, but if you do, I'll take advantage of it.
Classes: Any Paizo, Spheres of Power. Spheres of Might will be available after you get level 1, since I wouldn't know how to balance it for low-level play.
Rule Override: Apprenticeship: Of course, you are just training as adventurers, you are not yet. Here are some rules for "level 0.1".
- Class Skills only give a +1 bonus.
- Starting HP are half your HD + Con score.
- Classes with high or medium BAB only have a +0 BAB. Classes with low BAB have a -1 BAB.
- Classes with medium or low BAB are proficient with two simple weapons. Classes with high BAB are proficient with simple weapons and one martial weapon. Unchained Monks are only proficient with their unarmed strikes. Magi are proficient with one martial weapon.
- Casting classes have a Caster Level of 0 for all numerical purposes. They are, however, still considered casters.
- As an integration to the above, spells with a duration of X/level last half as long (minimum 1 round).
- Non-Sphere Casting classes can cast one less Level 1 spell per day. If it would bring the total to 0, they can only cast the bonus spells for having a high casting ability score.
- Spherecasting classes have 2 spell points less than normal. This can't bring the total below zero. They also only gain one bonus magic talent instead of the two usually awarded for the first time a character gains the casting ability.
- Animal Companions, Eidolons, Ghost companions and similar buddies get the Young template.
Feats: You will get a bonus feat at level 1, chosen between Power Attack, Weapon Finesse, Deadly Aim, Point Blank Shot, Combat Casting and Combat Expertise. You do not need to meet the requirements. Plan accordingly.
Reminder: you don't have it right now.
Traits: One trait. No need to choose one from the RotRL player's guide, I think those traits are horrid. Once you get to level 1, I'll give you another trait, customized to how you played your childhood.
Additional Rules: We'll be using the Background Skills system.
Mishaps: Every time you fail an attack, a skill check or some other d20 roll by 5 or more, I reserve the right to add extra effects. Setting your hair on fire while casting spark, disarming yourself with a clunky attack, getting your finger caught in a lock, this sort of things.
Starting Gold: 10 gp.
Items: You can buy old hands-me down weapons and armors at half price. Old weapons deal damage as if they were one size smaller, old armor has its ACP increased by 2.
Background: Just answer these few questions in character.
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
- What is your favorite scary tale?
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?

I'm very interested in this idea. I do have a couple of questions though. Being as it's only 10 starting gold, what other equipment would we be allowed to buy, because about the only things I can think of as a child character would be the old hand me down weapons and armor, and then a backpack with a few rations, and one or two other items. But I don't think a sun rod is something easily attainable by a child. Just my thoughts, so if there is a restriction, what would it be? Secondly, being as it would turn into a RotRL game, would knowledge of what happened prior be available in some fashion? I'll post a spoiler of what I mean so that I don't spoil anything.
So one big key thing is the Chopper murders. Would this be before or after the children grew up? And if before, what would they know about it, on top of would they be allowed to have a parent(s) be one of the victims? The other obvious is Nualia. Would the characters know her? Would they have possible interaction with her? If a character was an aasimar, would they receive the same treatment as her as prior described from the townsfolk?
GM Sappy |
@KyleS: Well, as a sunrod is not very dangerous, so they could have grabbed one from Tander's shop for whatever reason.
As for restriction, I'd refrain from taking inherently dangerous items (alchemist fire is already too expensive, but what business would a child have with caltrops?) unless you can give a good reason for them.
Adventuring items will not be especially needed, as you should be living with parents/caregivers; as for the weapons and armor, well, learning some personal defense is a good idea even in Sandpoint.
I had originally planned to have the game feature the Late Unpleasantness, but there wouldn't be much for the players to do. So, the game would start with the Swallowtail Festival of 4707, five years later, as written in the AP. Of course, the kids would know something about both Chopper and Nualia, especially the older ones: PCs would have been between 3 and 9 (in human terms) at the time. As for what they would have been told by parents, you can decide, but the truth is well-known.
You can be the child of a Chopper victim, just don't make it too grim.
For Nualia, a kid in their early teens could definitely remember her; and an Aasimar with high Cha could possibly have experienced a similar treatment as her, although the PCs are expected to be rather close friends, so they wouldn't be total social outcasts.
@Ileyna: If you feel like, you can have your old place back! We'll be seven rather than six.

Hm, I'm liking this idea a lot! I have a character from another run in ROTRL that placed the party as growing up together in Sandpoint, and I really dug into the town's details to make my character. We started at the standard beginning, but I alway thought it would be fun to have played the background.
For this I'll need to make a couple of slight changes from the original but they're easy ones: Minodora Povalli, human younger half-sister of Rhynsinn Povalli, Bard. Trouble seeker to avoid boredom, charmer to avoid consequences.
I'll get a sheet put together. Shouldn't take long at all.
A couple more questions about how advancement will work.
What will be the final equivalent point buy by the time characters reach level 1? 15? 20? I would likely use the initial 12 points differently depending on what the level 1 total would be.
What span of in-game time do you expect to pass before the beginning of ROTRL proper?
GM Sappy |
@rdknight: 15 points. I may (depending on how you fare) bump you up at a later level, if it's too much of a low power level.
And I'll start with the beginning of ROTRL proper, as my ideas for earlier game devolved into... something. Sorry if that wasn't clear from the first post. But there will be some festival activity before things swing into action.
Master Han Del of the Web |
Definitely interested, I had an interesting idea come together with in my head pretty much the day you closed the first recruitment. Would you be opposed to me playing a Promeathean Alchemist’s homunculus companion as one of the ‘kids’? It would essentially be my full character with the Alchemist acting as the ‘mother’. I will be needing to spend some resources on disguise and technically the character would be mute for a few levels
Avienus Corvina |
Kyle S here with the idea of this 13 year old half elf fighter with aspirations of becoming a soldier!
So I'm gonna hope that everything done on his sheet is correct. I'm more familiar with young characters, so if I'm off on his stats, please let me know. As far as his class skills go, I've put a -2 in there to reflect the bonus reduction you've stated. Now the bigger question I've got in regards is the feats. So being half elf, I'm gonna hope that Skill Focus will stand. Intimidating Prowess would be the starting feat (if that's allowed) as it would tie into his personality. Being a fighter though, I'm looking at a two weapon route, so Two Weapon Fighting is an obvious first choice for a fighter. Is this something you'll allow for a younger character? A short sword/dagger combo is what makes sense to me for learning at a younger age before going long/short sword. I'm perfectly willing to adjust or select differently if you say otherwise, but that's just my current thoughts.
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
- "I'm brave, courageous, and always know what I'm doing!" Brave, yes. Courageous, more like impulsive. Intelligent? Not exactly...
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
- "I was born here, and have lived here all of my life." A true statement, however, both of his half elven parents are originally from Taldor.
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...?
- "Well I obviously live with my family. My father Ramio, my mother Didia, my older brother Satus, and my twin sister Avidia." He and his sister were born in Sandpoint, but his much older brother was born in Taldor, shortly before his parents moved to Sandpoint.
- What do you want to do when you grow up?
- "I want to be a soldier, so that I can protect my family and friends!" Pretty much truth.
- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
- "That's easy, it's ..." I'm leaving this open to work with another player as I think it would be a cool idea to do.
- What is your favorite scary tale?
- "The Sandpoint Devil! One day I'm going to slay the beast so that he can no longer terrorize people!" This is one of the reasons that led him to wanting to be a soldier, but he's never admitted that.
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
- "Who doesn't like Shalelu? She's great at finding and taking out goblins! If it weren't for her, then the forest would be impossible to travel through." That's pretty much his thoughts on Shalelu. Also was a little unclear as to if that's who you wanted to know about lol.
So he wouldn't have much issue with another character unless they were very violent towards others. He does feel intimidated by others who're more intelligent than himself, so those with higher Int or Wis scores would make him a little more agitated than normal. Although he does get a little bashful and shy towards "pretty girls like him", so pretty much any human, elven, or half elven girl (doesn't have to specifically be though) with a higher charisma would almost get him to do what they wanted.

@Sappy: Oof, a bard on 15 points is tough, but I think I can make it work. Sorry if I'm being obtuse, but if I understand correctly now the essential idea is to run ROTRL with young characters, no time lapses to bring them to adulthood?
@Avienus: I think you and Minodora could work something out. She would be very pleased to have a minion. :)
GM Sappy |
@Master Han Del of the Web: Pinocchio! I like the idea a lot, but I'm not sure about how to balance the homunculus (and not speaking would be a nightmare): how about we make a custom half-construct race? Full construct immunities (as the Wyrwood have) are a bit too strong for my liking.
Alternatively, we could reflavor an android: they are much more humanoid than constructs, however.
@Avienus Corvina: Thank you! Your suggestion seems to be in order, and I see nothing wrong with your feat choices.
@rdknight: Sorry if it's a tough PB, I wanted to do something on the lower power scale. And yes, you would grow a bit during the course of the AP, but not beyond teenagers.
Andi Arnoth |
"Hi! I'm Andi! And this is Licorice!" She holds up a black kitten. "Here are a few things about me."
Stats and stuff: http://paizo.com/people/AndiArnoth
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence? "I am a very nice person and my most favorite thing in the world is my new kitten Licorice. Isn't he so cute?"
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...? "I think I've been here my whole life!"
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...? "I don't know who my real parents are. I sleep in an orphanage with many of my friends. They are like my brothers and sisters. We just do whatever we want. I like to run around in the streets, sneak around with my friends and grab a treat or two here and there. Sometimes I sneak out to the woods, even though I'm not supposed to!"
- What do you want to do when you grow up? "Easy question, become a famous lion tamer!"
- Who is your best friend? "Of course it is Licorice. Oh look, he is purring and licking his butt! Ha ha ha ha! And see? He has claws just like me. Wait til you see his new trick I taught him! "
- What is your favorite scary tale? "I heard a scary story about a ghost named Chopper who lives on an island outside of town. I wouldn't want my cool claws cut off, oh no! I am sure it is not true. (Right?)"
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana? "Oooohhh, Shalelu Andosana is just the prettiest person I've ever seen. I heard she is so nice and really like cats, just like me!"
Andi is a changeling druid (swarm monger archetype). She can turn her kitten into a cat swarm- a young crazy cat lady! She doesn't really know she's a changeling, just that she is a little different from the other kids. And she just accepts her rather strange abilities as they have always been a part of her. Andi would love to have some friends from the orphanage, if anyone is interested. Also, please let me know any errors you see, this kid aspect is new to me!

I have too many ideas! Need to narrow this down. :-)
- A young elf boy (leaning closer to eight or nine in human terms) who, despite being small and weak, wants nothing more than to be a warrior like his father/other hero he admires. However, to his dismay, he finds he's been blessed/cursed by the gods with magic. (Oracle.)
- A human girl who has somehow gotten ahold of an old magic tome, and is secretly learning to become a wizard against her parents' objections. (Wizard.)
- A drow child who had been found alone in the woods as a baby and had been raised by human parents. This, of course, only works with the assumption that this takes place before Second Darkness, and that nobody outside of the elves knows what exactly he is. A troublemaker because of his chaotic instincts, but not evil. Just wanting to fit in with his friends, in a world that sees him as incredibly strange. (Rogue or Swashbuckler, I would take the 'surface raider' racial trait to account for the fact that he was raised on the surface.)
I actually managed to trim down the list just dictating this, ideas that didn't look as good on screen as they did in my head. So, now I just need to pick from these.
I'd love to work together to tie in with someone else, perhaps as a sibling (adopted or natural) or best friend, so do any of these strike anybody's fancy? :-)

This would fit well with Andi's past as a reject of society and considered strange by others, if you were willing to grow up in the human orphanage with me! I'm also about the same age that you are considering, and our moral compass probably spins about the same. Check out my answers above.
Minodora Povalli |
@Sappy: Sounds good! I can make it work.
@Avienus: Sure. Just do what I say and we'll both be happy.
Background:
- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence? "I like books and pranking people, but just in good fun. I get in trouble some, but nobody seems to be able to really stay mad at me for long. Oops, that's two sentences. You don't mind do you?"
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...? "I was born here, and have always lived in Sandpoint."
- Who do you live with? Family, foster parents, siblings...? "I live with my sister Rynshinn. Our mother was murdered by Chopper. I was little when it happened and don't remember much. But I feel sorry for Rhyn. I can tell she's sad sometimes, and she has to work a lot because she runs Vernah's Fine Clothing now. I help out some too."
- What do you want to do when you grow up? "I want to be a singer."
- Who is your best friend? "That's hard. I have LOTS of friends." On hold for the time beng.
- What is your favorite scary tale? Minodora leans in close, looking sly. "I know one that hardly anyone else does. It's about the Red Bishop. It flies around at night, but not many people ever see it. Read about it in a book. That's the great thing about books, they are full of secrets if you spend time looking for them."
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana? "Sure Shalelu is great. She's a hero around here, AND she's very mysterious don't you think?"
Minodora is a 13 year-old Bard (Studious Librarian). Her older sister Rhynshinn is barely an adult herself. Between keeping a business and household running, Rhyn is too busy to supervise Minodora much, so she splits her time between hanging out in book and map shops and hanging out in the streets. I should have her character sheet mostly wrapped up tonight.

So I'm still figuring out backstories, but a base one is that with his parents being from Taldor, his father would most likely be a merchant/trader, and his mother a tailor herself. That already had put a notion of some kind of relationship with Rynshinn. If you wanted to tag team it, I'm thinking Avi's mother assisting Rynshinn in getting on her feet after Vernah's death and bringing the guild together. Having the two families develop closer ties, that would allow for Avienus and Minodora grow up as close friends. Any thoughts or ideas?

@Mustachio Marino: Spherecasting refers to casting classes which use the Spheres of Power alternate magic system. It's a complete overhaul of magic, giving casters several at-will tools and allowing people to build their own kinds of casters. I personally like it a lot, especially for spontaneous casters.

Is Spheres a requirement of this adventure, or can players choose vanilla system or spheres? I'm willing to try it, but it is brand new to me so I would need more help than normal.
edit: Oh wait, I get it. You need to play on of those special sphere classes to use it. A druid would just be a normal caster.
GM Sappy |
@Andi: There are also conversion archetypes allowing you to use Spheres of Power on all kinds of casters. For example, the Sphere Druid. If you'd like to try, I can give you a primer, however it's neither mandatory nor recommended.
@Whiskey and a Bonesaw: Welcome! Looking forward to your ideas! Just a reminder, balancing Spheres of Might was a nightmare, so the Vector archetype would have to wait until proper level 1. However, the Vector is quite the overhaul, so adding the archetype later would be weird... I'll have to think a bit about this. Perhaps limiting Martial Traditions to 1-2 talents could be appropriate.

I had kinda figured he or she (I haven't decided) would just not get anything SoM-related until level 1, making her/him a mediocre telekinetic.

- How would you describe yourself in a single sentence?
"Umm... I'm quick, and brave, and I usually try to be good, but I keep getting in trouble by accident."
- How did you end up in Sandpoint? Born here, moved here...?
"I don't know where I was born, but they found me in the woods. Someone found me and took me to the orphanage."

- Who is your best friend? (hint hint, you may do joint backgrounds...)
"Andi, of course! She's always fun, and she's a bit weird too, so she doesn't mind I am. She likes my magic tricks, too. At least, I think she does. We have lots of fun together!"
By magic tricks, I mean his spell-like abilities, and I took the arcane talent feat for prestidigitation. Won't be any mechanical advantage, but I thought it would be fun flavour to have him magically talented but lacking the attention span to actually learn it. :-)
- What is your favorite scary tale?
"Andi told me about this ghost out on an island, and it's some guy who killed a bunch of people right here in town a few years ago! I kind of want to see the ghost, but I don't want to be chopped up!"
- Who is the most awesome person ever, and why is she Shalelu Andosana?
"Shalelu is! She's a hero! She protects the town from goblins, and she's never afraid or worried about what people think."
Minodora Povalli |
** spoiler omitted **
Minodora is human, but they are half-sisters. Rhynshinn's father is long dead. Minodora's dad is unknown to her, and she can no longer find out from Vernah. Rhynshinn might have a good guess, but she's not talking so far. (Yes, it's all figured out, so I know the whole story).
Anyway, Minodora doesn't get out of scrapes on her adorableness alone as she thinks. Since Vernah's murder the Povalli's are now one of the town's "Pitied Families", and nobody wants to take anything about Minodora to Rhyn and add to her problems. Minodora doesn't realize this of course, and thinks she's just that clever.

Here's what I'm thinking for the race...
Standard Stat Array: +2 str, +2 int, -2 cha 0rp
Bite 1rp
Life-Draining Venom 1rp
Dual-Minded 1rp
Static Bonus Feat: Skill Focus (Disguise) 2rp
Fast 1rp
I wanted to preserve the homunculus flavor, thus the bite attack and the venom, but also make it reasonable that he would be able to blend in, or failing, that run away.
Class-wise, I was thinking maybe a Conscript or Shifter, both have abilities that could be spun as a solid indicator of not really being human. I do want any class abilities to reflect something like a terminator approach to problem-solving. (Edit: not necessarily with violence, so much as taking whatever it is straight on and trusting he is durable enough to handle it.)
Do we know what the Slayer was planning building his character into?

I'm starting to get the feeling that a second table may need to be created, as it seems that 4 players from the other game are still showing interest. I can't lie though, if a thread died down due to holidays and related events caused the idea of a dead game, I'm not exactly the most eager. I love the idea, but real life does have to come first. If we're expected to post multiple times a day, that's not something I'll be able to do. I've got a game I play in, I've got a game that I'm finally starting to run, and that doesn't include the other table top activities that I attempt to do away from the computer, nor does it include everything else that I have going on in life such as a job, hobbies, and most importantly family. I'm not trying to be mean or cruel or spiteful. I'm just being honest in the events that I'm currently seeing.
GM Sappy |
@KyleS: Yes, I was thinking of making a second table. I wanted it to be a surprise...
The original game swamped because of an error of judgement in my part: I tried to adapt a module to Sandpoint, and failed to make it fun and interesting. As we move to RotRL proper, that should not happen.
As for posting per day, I almost always chuckle when recruitments ask for "at least 1 post per day", because it almost never works: between different time zones, unforeseen circumstances and those times when we return home dead tired and fall asleep before posting, it's always slower than that.
So what I generally ask is that you check daily, post enough to make things run smoothly, and tell when you are going to miss a few days on the Discussion thread. I hope that's reasonable.

You say a second table is needed, but then say the last game died, and then say that you are too busy to play. Licorice is rather confused, you don't have to apply after all. Can you clarify your main point?
KyleS |
Thank you for the clarification Sappy, it actually really helps out. I'm sorry for ruining your surprise. I was just pointing out what I was starting to notice and the thoughts that were starting to occur to me. I'm the kind of guy who'd rather voice an opinion before something potentially goes bad so that it doesn't instead of sitting there with no action and then saying something after it completely falls apart. I completely understand games going belly up when something goes completely wrong in the aspect of how it was intended to be. In my last decade or so of running games, I'd be lying if I said that's never happened to me lol.
@Andi Didn't mean to cause confusion. Just pointing out things I've noticed in my experience of how PbP games die out. One of those reasons is that people get the wrong impression when a game slows down. While I haven't looked at the other game thread (to avoid too much knowledge than I already have) so I can't make a full assumption. I was merely stating what I was observing. So it's not that I'm too busy to play, it's that I don't have all day to create multiple posts every day. I only have free time right now because I'm working part time, which will change here in a month or so. So Sappy's expectations of activity seriously helps out.

Hopefully I can dispel a bit of confusion about why I left, at least, since it seems like there was a misunderstanding up above. I had a pair of deaths in the family within a month of each other, and I needed to step away from other stuff for a while, so I decided to drop this and I think a couple of other games, and put the rest on hiatus for a bit.

I was thinking about maybe making a Samsaran caster(can't think what kind), but I just wanted to check something. I'm wondering what human equivalent age a newly re-incarnated Samsaran would be. I'm assuming it would be old enough to be self sufficient, while still being young enough to qualify as young.
