The midnight Circus hasn't changed much since the last time you've been here. Rogg is performing a different number, his bears sparring with wooden swords. As Biyo sees you walking in, he rushes at you, a joyous expression on his face. "Masters! Oh glorious heroes of a thousand struggles, saviors of us oppressed folks! Are you here to spread tales of your incredible victories?"

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda waves him off.

"We're just here to consult with the master of the Circus."

"We have some questions, that's all." Basil adds.

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

"But surely and indubitably, oh unmistakable heroes! Allow me to lead you to Master Bernaditi!"

The rakshasa has exchanged his human seat for lavish crimson pillows, and is smoking a water pipe as you enter. Biyo waits outside. "Ah, you have come back! Any luck with the others? The Nightpeddler truly did pass by, so I can buy and sell you something, if you so wish."

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Sighing heavily again, Edda nods.

"Thank you Master Bernaditi. We appreciate the hospitality. Yes, we have had some minor successes so far, tiring though it has been. Not to mention the walking pile of armor that keeps attempting to intercept us in the forest..."

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

Niklos nods along with Edda's description of prior events, lending his own sigh to the choir. "Yeah, he calls himself 'Ale-gone,' or somethin' like that. Not the sort you'd like to share a pint with, savvy? But really, we're here to ask what you know about the Smith's Caldera and the Ticktock Man... or rather, what you don't know."

The scoundrel waggles his eyebrows meaningfully at Bernaditi. Plopping next to the rakshasa, he gives their host an expectant look. "So, are you gonna pass the pipe or what? Had I known about this here expedition, I would've packed a week's worth of coffin nails. While we're on the subject of luxuries, what'd you get from this Nightpeddler bloke, anyway?"

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

Bernaditi roars in laughter as he makes place for Niklos. The pipe tastes lmost sickeningly sweet. "Oh, you met Algon the Ever-Seeking! Poor fellow, Sonnorae never properly polished his tale. He's Zassrion's nemesis, bent on a singular geas of ending the Patchwork Lord for good, whatever the cost. But as he kept forth, he strayed further and further from his path of righteousness, falling as low as to do evil for the greater good. Which is sort of a grey area in morality, you'll agree. Should he ever get to fight Zassrion, he would Fall right before facing him, as punishment for his corruption, and regret all that he did before being killed. An educative tale, I suppose."
"And as all the storykin, he lives in the present, forgets the past and doesn't care about the future. Only those under the aegis of a Conspirator, like Biyo and Rogg, can learn, to some extent. Unless you managed to change his story dramatically..."

The rakshasa puffs a cloud of misty smoke before continuing. "This is speculation on my part, but perhaps if you could make him Fall before he met Zassrion, lead him to ackonwledge the evil he's done, he might just break enough from his story. I don't know if it will work, or how long, but it's a chance. Killing him would remove him from play until he gets to ol'Marzie, of course, and perhaps you can just keep tricking him. Not the smartest fellow in the Realm."
"About goods, you'll be surprised to know that, for the right price, I've got just what you need. All in my chest. While it's closed, there might be anything, right? And when I open it, it'll be just the things you bought, nothing else. You know, that time in stories when there's the weird creature carrying the precious item needed to fight overwhelming odds, and the heroes who accidentally stumble upon them? Narrative device as old as time. Only, you have to pay me."

Another puff of smoke comes from the rakshasa's wicked grin. "But that's quite enough information I give you for free, eh? What are you offering for all I know about the Ticktock Man? A tale I've never heard? A riddle that'll take me a day to solve? A joke that would make Mourning Choir chuckle?"

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda cackles a bit and offers some slips of paper.

"I found someone's IOUs for kisses. Some sort of payment. I thought for a few seconds there, in this realm, such things could be used as actual money! Paper money! What a silly concept, huh?"

Cards: all the Stars cards, The Empty Throne, The Theatre, The Unicorn, The Marriage and The Twin Init +10; Senses low-light vision; Perception +16; AC 22, touch 17, flat-footed 16 hp 45/45; Fort +6, Ref +9, Will +10

Basil taps his foot as he ponders riddles.

"Let me offer a riddle." Basil says. "What travels alone but is never alone, has a name but doesn’t exist?"

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

"Oh, I know that one!" calls Niklos, immediately slapping a hand over his mouth. "Heh, my bad..."

He quiets down, taking a long drag off of Bernaditi's pipe.

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

For the first time, Bernaditi appears to be taken aback. "I-owe-you... a kiss? And this scribble... Oh! It can't be..."
The rakshasa looks at the scribbled notes with admiration before cracking up and bursting into laughter. "Just pulling your leg. These are worthless. But fascinating, in a way. Someone accepting it as payment must really be desperate."
"And as for the riddle... the usual answer is a shadow, I believe. But is it really? Does a shadow travel alone? Or are other ones keeping it company? There's a whole Plane for them, I seem to remember. And for not existing... Well, it gets philosophical easily. But it's something to think about, so between this, the IOU and my chronic boredom, you've earned some information."

Bernaditi pops a chocolate before continuing, offering the box to you.
"The Ticktock Man ate Sonnorae's eyes, gaining her insight. Now he's the one who keeps this place running, and the only one who can. Talk about inheriting responsibilities. Without his constant work, the sun and the moon would stop moving, plunging us in eternal swelter or everlasting darkness, the rivers would dry out, and generally unpleasantness would happen. He's bitter, he's cranky, he's a thief and a paranoid. Do I smell Marzalee's wax on you? Then you may know what he steals."
"If you are planning to visit him, I would recommend taking care. The Caldera is always under renovation, last I've heard he's been squabbling with some giants, and as I mentioned, he's a paranoid, so traps. And it's a dangerous place, built on a volcano. Or in a volcano. Can't remember."
"It's getting late, by the by. Do you want to sleep here? I can have Biyo make dinner and set you in a carriage for the night."

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda suddenly looks worried.

"Keeps things going here? But what would happen if he was killed then? would the sun...such as it is...really stop moving?"

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

"Not immediately, no. But machines rust, they strain, they break. And once they do, if there's no Ticktock man to put them back into shape..." Bernaditi mimicks a twig snapping.

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

Niklos waves his hand dismissively at Edda, offering her the hookah. "Don't sweat it, cousin! Queenie said he won't be gone for good. Uh, hypothetically speaking, of course. If someone were to brutally murder him in his home, or something of that nature. That would be a horrible tragedy, wouldn't it?"

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda merely glares at Niklos, and offers him a rude gesture in return.

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

"Suit yourself," Niklos says with a chuckle.

He turns back to Bernaditi, tossing him a sack containing their accrued trophies. "Thanks for the info, mate. Here's what we've found so far, if anything seems worth buying. Not much around here that ain't painted on, is there? I think we'll take you up on your offer for the carriage, and get moving in the morning. Been a while since I bunked in one of those things. Man, that brings back memories..."

The scoundrel leans back on his pillow, taking another drag from the pipe and staring wistfully out into the distance.

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

"I would rather you didn't. This Realm isn't the best place to live even now, if it got stuck it could really be unpleasant. Marzalee hates him, but those larvae are needed to keep it all running."
Bernaditi moves further to examine the items.
"Eh, this is all stuff that can be sold easily. And I don't feel like haggling anymore, after the Peddler's visit. So, I'd say... four thousand, eight hundred and... four gold coins for all this."

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda shrugs...tiredness obvious on her face.

"Sure. I guess."

The wagon smells like birds, the beds are short, the mattresses hard and the blankets mangy, but all in all you manage to get a decent night's sleep.

Comes morning, you head towards Smith's Caldera. But, for the third time in a row, the Briar opens in the same small clearing, and once again Algon the Ever-Seeking comes out, introducing himself. "Halt there, travelers. I have been watching you, as you moved through this Realm, and I gather that you seek to slay the evil tyrant, Zassrion. But your quest is futile, for I am Algon, the only one who is fated to defeat the monster! Hand over to me the way to reach the Striding Fortress, lest I be forced to do harm unto you, for my righteous cause. I shall not enjoy it, but I will do so if you force my hand."

This is getting rather predictable. Such horrible timing on Sonnorae's part, dying while leaving a tale unfinished like that.

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

"Listen Algon, we don't have the means to reach the evil dragon just yet. So...can you just give us some time to finish collecting what you need, then we can hand them over? No fuss..no muss? You can get straight to the killing...slaying I mean, fresh and rested as a daisy."

GM Rolls:

Gisele: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Niklos: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

"It is reasonable, that which you are saying. Honorable friends, I shall find you once again, as we meet to go and slay the beast Zassrion! Onwards, to victory!"
Confident and proud, Algon takes a path through the undergrowth, disappearing from sight.

The rest of the travel is as short and uneventful as you've grown accustomed to, in this Realm. And as the brushes of the Briar open up, the landfscape is odd even by the standards of the tale. A lone, steep volcano rises from the Briar without thewarning normally provided by foothills. Pipes of copper and stone run through it at bizarre angles, as though they were buttresses struggling to hold the mountain upright, while a large stairway cuts up one side, leading to a stout, blocky structure near the peak.

Basil:
Someone is following you, beyond any doubt. You can't take a good look at whatever it is, you only catch brief glimpses of something colourful that shouldn't be there.

The scoundrel uses the next opportunity to slip off into the foliage, making sure that there are at least a tree or two blocking the view of their rear as he does.

Ok, so the description of Smith's Caldera is later, when you actually do arrive.

GM Rolls:
???: 1d20 ⇒ 20

It's hard to define "forward", "behind" and other space-related words, in the diegetical space that is the Harrowed Realm. But the laws of narrative are excellently suited to chases, ambushes and traps, and as Niklos cunningly hides, the creature most likely to fall into a trap promptly does. A rustle of leaves and vines pinpoints someone running through the undergrowth, and something leaps up a tree branch right next to the rogue, moving with superhuman agility. The rabbity form of Brambleson the Rabbit Prince, although hidden from the main group, is easily distinguished, spying on the travelers and muttering under his breath.

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

Niklos gets up from the bush, smiling up at the Rabbit Prince. "What's up, Brambles?"

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

Startled, Brambleson jumps into the air, landing gracefully in front of Niklos. "AH! Ah. It's you! Why, hello there! Fancy meeting you here, of all places, eh? I was just going for a stroll, away from that mewling, obstreperous hindrance, and who did I meet if not my new friends? Marvelous, the world, it is."

Never had you seen someone lie that badly.

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

Niklos nods along, grinning as widely as ever. "Well, ain't that a coincidence! You know what, we're just about to go visit the Ticktock Man. Wanna come with? At least come say hi! I'm sure Basil would be delighted to have you along... uh... say, are you related or somethin'? I can't help but to notice the... family resemblance, as it were."

As he speaks, Niklos puts an arm on Brambleson's shoulder and starts leading him back towards the group.

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

"Ah, I don't quite know, he's taller, maybe someone made him and his people because he liked me and- wait. WHAT! The Ticktock? Ol'Ticky? Why do you want to go there? He's the crankiest one around! And that's not just a pun! You know, for cranks, like the tools, as he's the one who keeps the place ticking... Anyway he, huh, well, I'm a Conspirator, he's one too, it's his place, his home, his castle, I can't just barge in, no no, rude! Unpleasant! Unbecoming for a gallant and brave folk like me, yessir! I'll just walk with you until the edge of the Briar, yes, this is my place and I feel fine in my place!"

The rabbit fey moves with Niklos through the paths that open in front of the adventurers.

Male Human (Varisian) Sczarni Swindler 8 | AC 22 | HP 75/75 | Fort +5, Ref +13, Will +7 | CMB +5, CMD 21 | Init +9 | Perception +12

Is that her, behind that overgrown fern? How... no, must be your mind playing tricks.

"Oh, what pleasant surprise to meet you all here, just coincidentally all found together in this tangled demesne! By the by, I'm a prince, not a king. But were I king of hops, I'd look for the queen of barley and make beer! Ha! So, where have you gone since we last met? I heard you are heading towards Smith's Caldera, lovely place, that. Or not. Depends. So? So? Did you visit Mourning Choir? Or Balimar and Balio? Hilarious folks, them, I've seen all of their plays. And they aren't stingy either! They even accept kiss vouchers as a payment, how about that."

Grining with her teeth exposed, Edda points at the 'prince.'

"You are suddenly very curious for someone who wanted us to depart quickly after our last encounter. What's your angle here? I trust you, or any denizen of this place, about as far as I could throw Niklos there."

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

"My angle? Well, I surely hope it's a-cute angle!"
Brambleson chuckles at his own terrible joke.
"No, seriously, why should I have some angle? Can't I just want you to succeed? Can't I be curious? Or just want to get away from my home?"

With all seriousness, Edda looks at the Rabbit Prince and narrows her eyes and crosses her arms.

"No. I'm pretty sure you're up to something: I just don't know what it is yet. So far everyone in this world has wanted something from us, even if it is just a story of something new. You want SOMETHING...or you wouldn't be here. So what it is that brings you so far from your safe little home?"

Edda reluctantly nods.

"OK. I get it now. But that's what they all want...or most of the smart ones anyway. They killed HER just to become 'real.' Only then did they realize they were trapped here. Right Mr. Fuzzy Feet? You can't leave...can you. You want to do so most desperately, but you're trapped here as much as all the other storykin. Worse: You KNOW you're trapped here. Most of the others...blissful ignorance. I think you and the Dragon have something in common in mind: Escape! To our world. You just don't know how to do it yet? Nononono...I suspect that's why were're here. They need us to get OUT. "This doesn't mean that helping the Rabbit Prince escape with us is a bad thing. If I became aware I was trapped in a very limited world, but it was in my nature to be a free-roaming creature, I would also want to escape." Basil reasons.

Female Skinwalker (Coldborn) 8th Level Witch (Cartomancer) w/ VMC Sorcerer (Harrowed Bloodline) HP 57/57; AC 18; T 14; FF 15 Init +3; Saves: F+7, R+8(+10), W+9[+10]; Senses: Scent ; Perception +10 [+11]; Status: +2 to Reflex (Changeable)+PfEnergy (96 pts)

Edda waves a hand in frustration.

"Its beside the point: He's here now. As long as he does NOT interfere with us...I could care less if he stays. I just don't like dishonest motives or hidden agendas. As my father would say: They annoy me worse than a 2 copper whore who thinks she's worth more than that..."

Without meaning to, Edda's eyes flick over to Niklos.

For the first time, Brambleson actually looks angry. "Of COURSE I want to leave! Oh, Bernaditi and the others actually like being here, being the sad little kings of their sad little hills! They are still storykin, as self-aware as they may be, created for a purpose and living that purpose. Me? Do you know what I got from Sonnorae? Wanderlust! Every part of me aches to see the world and to explore, but I'm trapped here, with a stupid home that keeps following me and reminding me of my shackles! Edda just rolls her eyes and activates her fight hex with a rude gesture, and continues up the path silently about 10 feet above it.

"I'll scout ahead and see what's what. You guys get up there as soon as you can."

Flying ahead to get a lay of the land beyond the path and the rocks. Trying not to be noticed too.

Back from holidays! Business should resume shortly.

Edda:
The stairs climb over the surface of the volcano, leading to a large forge high above, complete with anvils, water troughs, worktables, and bubbling pools of magma. You can notice that someone is working at the forge, hammering and grumbling, but they are too far away to see who, or what, they are.
There's quite the ascent, if you want to go further you'll likely be seen.

Brambleson pales at Niklos' words, his ears shooting up and his feet tip-toeing frantically. "KILL HIM? And why would you- oh. Oh, no, Marzalee. Sweet inky blood of the Harrow. Yeah, well, my advice would be, don't. Just as easy as that. I mean, he's unpleasant, a loner, arrogant, sociopathic, paranoid, selfish, self-righteous, prickly, stubborn, smells like old coins, never sings, never drinks and never offers cheese- what was I talking about? Ah, yes, Ticktock. The point is, he's well, kind of important in the Realm. Just as much as Marzalee herself; she brings those who expire back to the story, he keeps this whole puppet theater working. See that?"
Brambleson picks a pebble and violently tosses it upwards, where striking the wooden sun with a satisfactory thunk.
"The gears moving that stuff are in the Caldera over there. So for the rivers flowing, the winds blowing, and Sonnorae knows what. Without the Ticktock man, the whole place would stop working in a matter of days. And he needs Marzie's babes to do that, somehow. So yeah, I'd really suggest you don't kill him."

Niklos yawns and waves his hand dismissively at Brambleson. "Yeah yeah yeah, got it. Ol' Ticky's really important and stuff. He won't be gone for long, don't ya worry. Queenie just wants to hurt him a little, and then he'll be right back to work. I doubt she wants everything to go to hell either, right? Wouldn't serve her any, seeing as she's stuck here as well..."

The scoundrel starts strutting his way up the mountain, whistling as she goes. "Come on! Who knows, maybe he's got a better offer..."
