Lily's rose finds its mark on the injured goblin, and he falls to the ground.
One as-yet-uninjured goblin left.

“Lily, that wasn’t a man.”
Gervase gives her friend a look of sympathy. “It was a near-sighted black bear.”

Bantering with Lily, Gervase jabs too hard and knocks a small table over rather than actually hurting the monkey goblin.

Gervase points out that I accidentally had an unconscious goblin attack. It appears I forgot to save my combat state at one point. I'll roll to see which of the two attacks gets retconned: 1=Gervase, 2=Arcilde: 1d2 ⇒ 1
Retcon:
The one remaining goblin deftly dodges Gilstrom's attack, then fails to connect on Arcilde. Gilstrom misses again, but Lily lodges a thorny flower in the goblin's shoulder. Gervase tries to skewer him, but knocks over a table instead.

Naah, your thinking of that jerk we met at the Pidgeon n Pie inn. Though I still maintain he was just a particularly hairy werepig. What you saw in him...
She tries to get her aim on the remaining goblin, and patiently waits for a space to open up for her to take her shot.

"Wow, you two have met some interesting bears and werepigs!"
Gilstrom scowls at the gob-ape and tries once more to knock him silly. "SIT STILL!"

Gilstrom jumped the gun there, it wasn't your turn. ;-)
----------------
With a decisive blow, Arcilde swings her axe one more time, dropping the last monkey-goblin.
Looking around after the battle, you find a few pieces of equipment of exceptional craftsmanship among the mess the monkey goblins have created. Among them are two machetes, a chain shirt, and a darkwood buckler, which appears to have had a new arm strap affixed recently. All three show exceptional workmanship, and Arcilde notes a magical aura on the buckler. You also find a container holding 40 metal arrowheads, ready to be attached to arrows.
All three monkey goblins are unconscious and bleeding ... what do you intend to do with them? Let me know that, and anything else you want do while here at the smithy.
Lily Freefield |
Lily sticks her tongue out at Hawk, remarking
It was the best rubarb pie that side of the river, I will admit.
She seemingly concedes the verbal spar as the actual one ends. She walks up to one of the goblins and tilts her head.
Should I put it down? Or do we want to try and talk to them? They could know more about what happened... or they could just be goblins and be a serious headache if they wake up.
Gervase Goldhawk |
“I don’t feel great about putting them down. Do you think we could ask them about what happened to the colonists without knowing their language?”
“Like through mime or sign language say?”
Gervase puts an arm around Lily’s shoulders and shuffles her feet a bit.
Lily Freefield |
Lily rolls her eyes a little and grins.
It's all good fun silly, I know you better than that...
She reaches into her pack and quietly passes her the potion, not commenting on it and giving her a grin.
Sides, if you said something really mean, I just wouldn't bake you any honeycakes anymore. Though that comment about the pie was pushing it... you could make a girl feel insecure you know. But maybe your just Jealous I had to undo less buttons than you to get free drinks.
Her tone clearly conveys that she's teasing.
Gervase Goldhawk |
“In your dreams, Freefield!”
Gervase salutes her friend with the potion vial. “Have you given any thought to where you might want to establish a homestead for your farm?”
“Did we talk about sharing a place on the Peregrine? Arcilde and Gilstrom, do have any plans like that?”
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Lily Freefield |
Lily nods and chews.
We did... I'm all for it. But maybe for now we focus on these critters. I don't have any problem putting them down... plenty of folk back home lost family to goblins, lost a cousin myself to a raid, and just cause they talk doesn't make them any less of vermin than rats or less dangerous than a rabid dog. I promise, they won't feel a thing... they can't help what they are after all, no sense in torturing them.
Arcilde |
We could save those goblapes, if ye wish. I've no love fer goblins, an' I haven't met any apes. I s'ppose that makes me undecided on goblapes.
If anyone speaks goblin, it might be worth stabilizing one and trying to question it. Otherwise, Arcilde will collect the stuff and move on.
GM Rinaldo |
I'm pretty sure none of you speaks goblin, and you didn't understand them talking to each other. Unless you have some other way of communicating, your choices are basically:
* Kill them
* Restrain them and leave them somewhere to deal with later
* Stabilize them and put them somewhere outside the colony
How are you proceeding?
Gervase Goldhawk |
“OK.”
Gervase waits to hear Gilstrom’s opinion, before raising her harpoon to assist.
If Gilstrom is OK with this, I am ready to move on.
Lily Freefield |
Lily shakes her head.
No need Hawk... did this back at the farm all the time. She kneels down next to the first goblin and places her hand very gently against the goblape's forehead.
There is only a soft "Kathunk" sound as a wood peg hits the floor behind the goblin, then she moves to the next one of each.
Considering that her min coup de grâce is 12, figure actually rolling isn't necessary. And yes, she's using her ability like a bolt pistol used to slaughter livestock.
GM Rinaldo |
That works for me, and I applaud creative use of an ability at low level!
I'll want you to tell me what you do with the bodies at some point ... for now I'll assume they're sitting on the ground outside the smithy. They have been noted on the colony map.
With the monkey-goblins dispatched, Lily locates a leather belt and straps a machete on while Gervase tries on the chain shirt, and finds it slightly easier to move in than her boiled leather.
Moving north across the road to the dock, the next building is a mud wall building with a door facing east and one shuttered window. Above the door is a plain wooden sign that reads, “Tool House.”
Inside, hanging on the wall from hooks and nails are an assortment of tools, such as hammers, handsaws, hatchets, machetes, trowels, and the like. Various other implements, such as makeshift ladders, barrels of tar, and shovels are stacked or otherwise arrayed about the room. A locked wooden box with the words “For Emergency Only” carved on the lid sits on a shelf.
Gervase realizes that there is no way the original colonists could have relocated successfully without taking these tools. Wherever they went, they didn't take key supplies.
Lily Freefield |
Lily gets the lock box down from the edge and sighs.
One of us has got to learn how to pick a lock....
She looks at the thing for a moment and blinks.
Hm... well... if it worked on the goblins...
She holds her hand over the lock and focuses her effort.
[dice=Lily Brand "Disable Device"]1d6+5[/dice]
Repeat as needed to open, assuming it's not got hardness stronger than 5, Lily should snap it open pretty easy. Gonna "No country for old men" this box... and possibly some doors later on.
Gilstrom Noblewater |
Wow y'all been busy!
Gilstrom looks kind of sad as the goblapes are executed, but he doesn't complain or speak up, knowing that knightly folks have to do nasty things like that. Mournfully, he trudges off to the tool house. And then gets excited again.
"You're right! Something really odd happened here. I think they all left quickly, but not too quickly. It's not like they were interrupted mid-meal, but important things aren't taken and there's the journal pages missing. This is great!"
Gilstrom waits patiently as Lily goes all Chigurh on the box.
GM Rinaldo |
Lily start bashing the box with her spikes, and after a few solid hits ...
Break on 1: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Break on 1: 1d4 ⇒ 3
... she smashes the lid, managing not to break open either of the flasks of alchemists fire.
Carefully removing the explosives, she also finds a carefully folded (and probably flammable) swarmsuit.
Lily Freefield |
Lily gulps as she removes the alchemist fire.
Thaaaaat could have ended badly. Anybody want to carry these? Alchemy fire makes me nervous! Oh hey! This looks like the bee suits we have back home!
She smiles as she looks it over.
Yup! Probably would do a good job of keeping bees or other little annoying insects off you.
Gervase Goldhawk |
“A bit of luck always helps, Lily. All we can do is learn from this and move on.”
Gervase nods at her friend’s assessment. “I suspect Gilstrom and I would be most accurate with splash weapons, but feel free to disagree, Arcilde.”
“We should look out for creepy-crawlies as we search the remaining buildings.”
GM Rinaldo |
With a renewed respect for locked boxes, you move to the northernmost building in the triangular commons. This rectangular building is constructed of mud brick walls.
The building has a simple door facing east, but unlike all other buildings in the colony, it lacks any windows. A heady smell of dried plants, herbs, and dried meat lingers in the air.
Inside, the ground has been dug out to a depth of 3 feet so that the floor is lower than the ground outside. A short flight of steps set with flat stones leads into this darkened area, lit only by any ambient light coming through the door.
The building appears to lack interior walls except for a few short partitions, and four stout posts support the roof. The temperature is cool and the smell of rotted vegetables and meat is strong. Strings of garlic hang suspended from ceiling crossbeams alongside chunks of salted meat and bone. Debris and refuse is strewn across the floor between stacks of crates, boxes, and barrels against the walls.
Gilstrom: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Gervase: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
Arcilde: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Lily: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Lacking any way to let light in, the interior is completely dark. That doesn't bother Arcilde, though, and she peers in. Before stepping in, she realizes that the ground appears to be moving slightly.
Gervase Goldhawk |
“This place smells worse than a Katapeshi slave-galley on a hot Erastus Day.”
Gervase draws and prepares an alchemists fire. “Guys, do you want me to be the bee-suit clad decoy? Or does someone else want to do it?”
“If it’s rats, piercing and slashing weapons should still do some damage.”
The ranger waits until everyone is suited up and ready. “Lily, do you want to hold a torch?”
If no one has any objections, she then lights it with flint-and-steel.
Gilstrom Noblewater |
Gilstrom takes a big (well very tiny, but he is a gnome) step back as Arcilde mentions the floor is moving.
"Ahh... sure. Bee-suit-clad decoy sounds like a great idea! Thanks Gervase, boy do I owe you a drink and I really hope they brew alcohol here."
Arcilde |
“I suspect Gilstrom and I would be most accurate with splash weapons, but feel free to disagree, Arcilde.”
Arcilde chuckles and taps her axe against her breastplate. An I were e'en the least bit agile, 'awk, I would na be wearin' this. I wager it weighs as much as Sir Gilstrom, there.
Before Gervase steps into the building with the "slightly moving" floor, Arcilde lays here hand on the ranger's shoulder. An ye're willin', 'awk, I can give ye some help. Arqueros will protect ye.
Giving Gervase the War Mind blessing. Then she switches from her battleaxe to her warhammer.
Lily Freefield |
Lily gulps at the moving floor warning and takes the lit torch.
Yeeeeeah... I'll just stay WAAAAAY back here.
She steps up to the side of the door and sticks the torch through the doorway on the other side up high so the others can go under
GM Rinaldo |
Lily shows Gervase how to don the swarmsuit, then holds a torch up to give her friend some light. The movement on the floor resolves into thousands of cockroaches that begin to skitter around in the unwelcome light.
Arcilde calls a blessing onto Gervase, then everyone waits for the brave hunter to take on the disgusting mess.
Whatcha doin'? If it involves fire, remember that the building is wood and if destroyed will have to be rebuilt.
Gervase Goldhawk |
Cockroaches … great. UGH! I think I would’ve preferred rats.
“Lily, Arcilde, have a few torches. I have a full water skin which might help extinguish an out-of-control blaze, but I can’t see how we’re going to fight the swarm without fire.”
“If everyone’s ready …”
Gervase tosses her alchemists fire and begins scurrying away from the party/swarm – like a … cockroach.

Should have done this before, but go ahead and make your checks now:

Lily is up! The swarm is still in the center of the building; Lily's lightning reflexes allow her to act before it does.
Lily Freefield |
Forgive me, I have NO idea if this would work, and Lily doesn't either, so we'll see what happens.
Lily yelps as the fireball goes off and scampers back a little before turning and holding out the wooden torch in front of her as she holds out her other hand forming one of her lances... but this time it looks almost like a mini pine tree, as the needles light a bit and she fires the now burning stick into the nasty swarm of roaches.
Okay, so my thinking here is that she's creating a torch out of her wood kineticist, then firing said torch into the swarm, so +1 fire like if I was hitting someone upside the head with a torch? Not sure what the negatives would be or if the plan would fail miserably, but it's what lily is trying.
Wood Blast: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
GM Rinaldo |
I like the concept, but I don't think it is balanced with the action economy to allow it. Since your wood blast is not an area effect attack, it would not have any effect on the swarm; Lily would know that, so I'll let you redo your turn.
Lily Freefield |
Thanks. Sadly, not much else I can do.
Lily steps back a few paces.
I'll just... be back here! In case there are more goblins! Yeah, that's it! Just call me if you need me!
GM Rinaldo |
Arcilde and Gilstrom stand back, and as Gervase tosses the alchemist's fire in, she scurries away from the door, as does Lily.
Despite not landing solidly in the mass of bugs, the small bomb does elicit a response. Thousands upon thousands of roaches come pouring out of the building, some crawling and some flying. The disgusting cloud gets just outside of the building before slowly moving back inside.
The bugs seem disinclined to come very far out of the building. As the flame of the alchemist's fire burns out, most of them go back into the storage building. What do you want to do now?

"Do we need to kill the bugs? Can't someone just wear the suit and go in and see if there's anything useful in there?"
Lily Freefield |
Nice beat there.
Gilstrom giggles as Gervase gallantly freaks out and bolts back towards him.
"Do we need to kill the bugs? Can't someone just wear the suit and go in and see if there's anything useful in there?"
Lily smiles sweetly and pats the pint sized warrior on the shoulder.
Your absolutely right! You can just go in wearing the suit and scour the place for whatever the colonists hid there!
She kneels down, pressing close to him and giving a side wink to hawk.
You know, I heard about the bravery of Gilstrom Noblewater on the ship, but I had no idea you'd be willing to go so far to protect us poor womenfolk from such a trial. Your truly a treasure, a dear companion.
Lily's height, combined with Gilstrom's height, combined with her... natural assets.... makes Gilstrom's vantage point a rare one indeed.
Gilstrom Noblewater |
Gilstrom is many things, one of them is a fool. "Well, I ah... I suppose I -am- here for your protection. You deserve only the breast in knight defenders. Where's that suit! Can I even fit in it? Nobody makes things for reasonably sized folk."
If Gilstrom can wear the suit he'll slap it on and go for a rummage. take 10 for perception 16.
Gervase Goldhawk |
“You are welcome to try out the bee-burka, Gilstrom.”
Gervase shudders out of the garment, stamping spitefully on any stray roaches. “This place crawls.”
“I was going to suggest tearing the roof off the sodding hut and letting Sarenrae sort it. But your way works.”
The ranger smooths down her clothing and tentatively combs through her hair, hoping for no further surprises. Her backpack is upended unceremoniously, before receiving similar treatment.
GM Rinaldo |
Flattered and bamboozled into action, Gilstrom agrees to take on the bugs. With a little help from Lily, he is able to get the swarmsuit draped over his armor. The netting slows him down, but he is able to wade into the infested hut.
Cockroach swarms are diminutive, so you have DR 5 against their 1d6 damage; your speed is reduced to 10'. I'll say it takes you two minutes to give the place a once-over while carrying Lily's torch. Take 3 points of damage, and assume you spent a portion of that time nauseated, but managed to pull through.
A few of the barrels appear to have been coated with some sort of paste and have remained sealed and unbothered by the bugs. Gilstrom is able to roll them to the entrance where the ladies can assist in pulling them out. Lily recognizes the paste as a natural insect repellant made from bay leaves, garlic, and catnip.
With direction from Arcilde, he is also able to rescue a small box that has a magical aura within it. The teakwood box is well made and decorative (probably worth a fair amount on its own) and it contains a magical wand.
Once that is done, Gilstrom removes the swarmsuit and spends several minutes breathing fresh air and having a good old-fashioned case of "the willies".
---------------
Go ahead and respond to this as you see fit; I'll provide the exterior description of the last two buildings in the colony center, and you can decide how and when to enter either of them.
The final buildings in the colony center are long, rectangular buildings constructed entirely from planks on a wooden frame, with a pitched thatched roof. Each building has two door frames on the side of the buildings opposite the palisade, but lacks doors. Four window frames open into either side of the long walls, a few of which have no cover and others only a canvas draped across the inside. A partial view of the interior is possible from the doorways. Inside, the floors are hard-packed earth, and along the walls are wooden bunk beds. Many of the pallet beds are covered with blankets that now gather dust. Those beds have sacks or tied bundles of clothes sitting at their feet.
