Absolutely! Gameplay thread is open for backstory, journaling, and so forth.

Assume you have known you were selected for at least a couple of months, as people would have needed time to settle their affairs before leaving permanently.

Lily, meetup sounds great!

If you suggest an approximate year and place, such as:

• During a camping/hiking trip in rural Andoran (maybe not in Bellis though)
• At a pub/nightclub in Augustana (or another non-Almas Andoran city) a few weeks ago
• Interns at the Bountiful Venture Company over the summer school holidays one year (as friends or rivals)
• Make something up set on a coastal area of Andoran, or actually on the Inner Sea itself ...

And I’ll follow your lead.

Depends on how connected we want our characters to be I think.

I think a pub or nightclub might make for a interesting chance encounter but it'd be rough to make it a more meaningful relationship. The hiking trip might not be as fun but would mean that they've spent more time together and could have grown closer over time.

Perhaps a few years ago(4713?) when Lily started her traveling in earnest, and Gervase was heading to her internship, they ran into each other on the road and Lily agreed to hike with Gervase rather than either of them being a girl traveling alone on the countryside. I imagine a real "City Girl/Country Girl" sorta interaction/relationship, both of them excited about their futures, one interning with the bountiful venture company, one looking to study the agriculture techniques brought from far away lands to a port city.

Oh yeah, the meeting each other during 'gap year' trope could work.

I also like the city vs country angle, and I think Gervase's love of the outdoors would mean it's more complex than just 'simple, unworldly yokel hates on slick, shallow mall shopper' cliché.

I'm off to bed now, but I'll post Gervase's backstory and some more thoughts along these lines after reading your response tomorrow.

GM Rinaldo, I have also changed up some of Gervase's equipment, and invested in more raw materials for crafting.

Yeah, I think if anything how badly Lily wants to learn and have new experiences would play into it to, as "improving the farm" is more something to excuse her wanting to go travel and explore than something she actual aspires to do. She'd have a lot of questions about the places Gervase has been, and the things she's seen in her time in the academy, and if they spent long enough together, might even admit to the fact that she wants nothing to do with the "Simple farm life" her parents desire for her.

Maybe we can play off the cliché... like when they first meet up, they act like that because they think that's expected, but as they traveled together, they realized that Gervase is a rough and tumble sort of gal under her "Prime and proper academy training", and that the "Simple country bumpkin" persona Lily puts on is just a guise that Lily wears and in reality she dreams of going on crazy adventures and excitement.

I having difficulty creating a profile for my character, so I'll just give you some information in the meantime:

Arcilde is a strange, pale-skinned dwarf who does not use a surname. Her eyesight is especially keen, and she usually avoids bright light.

She's a fledgling warpriest of Arqueros (empyreal lord of fortifications and bodyguards), so protecting her community is a religious devotion.
She's an experienced blacksmith and a highly-skilled armorer. She's been earmarking most of the profits from her work to getting started with the colony, and she is bringing a large amount of equipment with her to the island.

Arcilde is a bit shy and somewhat uncomfortable in crowds, but she's kind and very easy-going. She appeared in Absalom a few years back, then migrated to Almas. She credits some Andoren Pathfinders with freeing her from slavery, but she doesn't usually go into detail.

She's very excited about the opportunity to work on the new colony and is happy to help anyone who needs it. She spends many days on the ship scribing scrolls that people think will be helpful.

Backstory:

Arcilde was born to an isolated dwarf clan inside the demiplane of the Hao-Jin tapestry. When the structure of the demiplane began to break down, the trapped dwarf clan turned to Droskar in desperation, and the clan began to change into duergar. Arcilde was never dedicated to Droskar and was often sent to the slave ranks as punishment for her lack of devotion.

When a group of Pathfinders entered the tapestry looking for a piece of the sky key, they freed several slaves from the Ironwhip clan--and Arcilde vowed never to use her clan name again. Later, when the tapestry was torn open, Arcilde was able to escape completely.

She traveled to Andoren to make a new start and set about trying to earn a surname all her own. Once there, she studied many other religions to find the call that she never felt with Droskar. She felt drawn to the Golden Bulwark, lord of fortifications and protection, and his non-agressive application of weapons and skill.

After years of brainwashing by the Ironwhip duergar, Arcilde is much more comfortable with nearly any race other than dwarf. When she heard they were accepting applications to go to an Andoren colony, she saw this as a chance to repay those who had freed her. Her skill as a smith was the main reason they selected her, but her minor magic ability and lack of any family ties probably didn't hurt.

@Gwen, Wow! Cool backstory. I’m going to be able to learn some things about tight writing from you.

@Lily, I’m good with the thrust of the plan in your second paragraph.

I’ve been thinking about the best way to handle this in-game, so that it doesn’t feel too self-indulgent and the others are not exluded.

What about ⚡ Flashback ⚡ snippets of the past from each PC’s perspective under spoiler tags from time to time, during the sea voyage to Talmandor’s Bounty?

That way the main focus of the game remains the interactions with Arcilde, Gil and the NPCs. Also, GM Rinaldo can move the game forward at the pace he likes.

As an example, I’ll post the tattoo story in gameplay as a campfire tale told to Lily of an exotic land Midshipman Goldhawk once visited.

Are you good with that, Boss? I’m also considering swapping an acid vial for another lot of shortbow raw materials. There’s an alchemist Alba Divenvaar on the Peregrine, right?

backstory:
“There are three types of people in the Inner Sea: Sheep, wolves … AND sheepdogs. No child of mine is EVER going to be one of the other two.”

Gervase Goldhawk was born to two Twilight Talons intelligence officers in the Andoran capital, Almas. When Gervase was two, her father surprised his wife on her 21st birthday with a family vacation to the sleepy town of Bellis.

Sadly, the young mother did not survive the Goldhawks’ first evening in Bellis in what the shocked local constable concluded was a robbery gone wrong. Although she was too young to remember the event, it deeply affected her father and shaped Gervase’s journey from childhood into early adulthood.

Whenever her father returned from the field, every spare moment of Gervase’s time was spent learning survival, self-defense and elementary fieldcraft. Bow-hunting, fishing, boating and swimming became the girl’s favorite pastimes.

Although she enjoyed history and the swim team, Gervase was an average student and certainly wasn’t part of the popular crowd. However, the Mean Girls clique gave her a wide berth after an incident involving the prom queen, a goat and a vial of sovereign glue. School holidays were mainly spent interning at a local shipping company.

On graduation at the urging of her father, Gervase entered the Gray Corsairs Naval Academy, spending the summer of her second year at liberty, rambling across southern Andoran. During this time, she met a boisterous, kind-hearted country girl named Lily, with whom she formed a tight bond of friendship.

An interesting exchange took place during a third year ethics class about appropriate methods for extracting information from enemy captives.

Some of the more daring midshipmen proposed, “Blackmail … solitary confinement ... and sleep deprivation.”

To which an exasperated Gervase calmly stated, “Waterboarding. Making someone think they’re drowning works EVERY time.”

Disillusioned with the strict discipline and bureaucracy of the Gray Corsairs and with her 21st birthday approaching, Gervase implemented her first act of tweenage rebellion. With her father away dealing with a crisis somewhere in Cheliax, she hitched a lift to the neighboring metropolis of Augustana for a weekend of drinking and partying. On the first evening, she rounded a corner in the Red Light district and spotted her father unlocking the door of a shabby apartment door and disappearing inside.

When he emerged hours later, Gervase waited another hour to ensure he was really gone, checked carefully for traps and alarms and used a skeleton key to unlock the door. Inside she found a dark chamber with a blood-stained stone floor. The room held hanging chains, shackles, surgical tools and three empty, sound-proof cages.

But worse was a wall shrine displaying handbills from all over the Inner Sea, reporting the activities of a serial killer known as the “Gray Wolf.” In a wastepaper bin, Gervase found a draft letter addressed to her, which explained how her father was planning to surprise her on her name day with a vacation to Bellis, and how he hoped she’d do better than her mother on her rite of passage test.

Staying calm, Gervase realized she had enough time to tip off the authorities and plan her disappearance. She also remembered a kindly letter from an old supervisor at one of her summer vacation employers, explaining that they were currently recruiting for an ambitious colonial expedition to the remote Arcadian Ocean.

I feel angst deficient in my backstory. My character had a happy childhood and everything! I didn't realize we where posting them, so here is mine.

Backstory:

Born to former slaves, Lily was raised to understand that there was nothing better than to sweat and toil for something that you could call, without reservation, yours. A simple farm girl, she took this message to heart and worked tirelessly with her parents on the little piece of redistributed Andoran land. As she grew older, she proved herself to be a more than capable farmer, helping to expand her families fields several times over. Despite a happy home, Lily was possessed of a wanderlust that had her traveling further and further abroad, ostensibly to learn new farming techniques, but in truth to bring her to new places to explore and enjoy. When the day came to pass on the farm, Lily gently refused, claiming that to simply pass on such a large family farm to child was against the principals of the Common Rule and that it should instead be sold, with a portion of it going to her parents for their retirement and a portion of it going to her to begin her new life. Her parents believed the half-truth and Lily was granted a tidy sum of gold with which to head out into the world. For a year she traveled and gained experience, both in new farming techniques and in the way of her burgeoning control over the plants of the land around her. After her year of study and travel, she felt ready to experiment with her new techniques, but the idea of returning to the old farmlands was a prospect she felt would drive her mad with boredom. While pondering what to do, a colleague advised her of the second colony expedition. This sparked her idea to take her techniques to a whole new land, to try to build a new foothold for Andoran that would have all the excitement and dangers that she craved while also letting her do what she did best, farm. To that end, she wrote a letter to the expedition, and that is where our story begins.

application:

To the Esteemed Owners of the Bountiful Venture Company,

My name is Lily Freefield, and I am looking to secure a place within your company’s second wave to further establish your colony on Ancorato. There is a saying that “No army marches with empty bellies” and I know that one of the most dangerous things that can happen to a new colony is an over-reliance on imported supplies. I have an abundance of both practical and theoretical experience in terraforming land to suit farming. I also have a small amount of magical ability to increase the yield of the plants that I tend, which should help with what may be hard and unexpected circumstances one should expect when endeavoring to establish a new colony. I believe with the farming techniques that I am helping to create that I can help establish a sustainable crop within ¾ the time it would normally take. To this end, I request that you take a chance on me and my abilities, and allow me to assist you in bringing the Common Rule to this new land.
Sincerely
Lily Freefield

Lily, Arcilde isn't so much "angsty" as she is "odd and trying not to be". People say, "Where are you from?" and she used to say, "Weeeellll, tha's a bit...complicated." These days, it's just, "Most recently, from Andoren--tha's all tha' matters."

No worries, not meant as a insult. Angst has a bad rap, but it's essential to making characters feel real and giving them real emotions. Poor lily already feels more real with her first story than her background made her out to be, because a perfectly happy childhood doesn't happen to anyone. We all have crap happen to us that shapes who we are, and that is angst.

GM Rinaldo, would you mind posting a blank loot tracking spreadsheet somewhere for everyone to access?

If nobody wants to be Party Treasurer, I am happy to volunteer.

One thing though, I have not had to do loot splitting as part of a published Adventure Path before.

While I can’t imagine there’ll be any fighting over gets the +2 backscratcher of DOOM in this party, I’d welcome any systems/ideas you guys have seen work.

How is it done in your established AP PbPs?

In order of priority the NPCs Gervase wants to meet include:

• Anya Sandstrider (fellow hunter/fisher)
• Eamon Caranth (priest of Erastil, the patron god of the school she attended, potential longbow customer and possible crafter of cool divine magic items ;)
• Beancounter Brady (she brings us stuff we order from home, right?)
• Harcourt Carrolby (at some time, Gervase will probably want a pony)
• Perrell Beys (a professional historian, whereas Gervase is a keen amateur)
• Lyra Heatherly (just because she sounds interesting)
• Ramona Avandth (gotta suck up to the boss a bit)

Hey, sorry for not getting in a post earlier. AM HERE.

On loot, I think general consensus on who gets what works out best. People are usually 'No you, I couldn't possibly...' levels of polite which makes it work. If someone finds themselves short on loot we pool for them. That sort of thing.

Failing that we calculate the value of whateveryone gets and be -ultra- fair, but that's only necessary if there's frequent arguments.

Of his equipment, Gilstrom is leaving the dolphin polish, journal, and bedroll on the boat. Handy thing with gnomes is the equipment is so light.

With Persephone, I imagine that if she's just running wild and doing her own thing, she's not going to be saddled up. So if they're going overland he'll put saddle/saddlebags on the boat. He'll also leave his lance since it's just impractical to carry it everywhere if he's not at least near the dolphin.

For class-feature convenience, I am assuming that Persephone is within earshot whenever you need her, so if you want your saddle gear and lance, you have them. I assumed you would ride her over, but if you prefer to go in the boat yourself, that is fine.

The colony is just off the beach, visible with spyglass from where the Peregrine is anchored, and Persephone can certainly swim most of the way up until the water gets too shallow.

Sorry, I thought you saw my post in the discussion, they released ultimate wilderness with a fix to the missing basic phytokinetics which is all the previous "Gardening powers"+ Sift (Eye Roll) + detect plants only version of detect animals and plants. If you'd like, I can tone down Lily's control over plants, though I didn't think I'd done anything to overstep the "basic gardening" part yet.

The Midnight Mirror

I missed the addition of the detect.

Looking at the book, it says

Quote:
By concentrating, you can detect plants within 120 feet as if using detect animals or plants.

The referenced spell says

Quote:
You can detect a particular kind of animal or plant in a cone emanating out from you in whatever direction you face. You must think of a kind of animal or plant when using the spell, but you can change the animal or plant kind each round. The amount of information revealed depends on how long you search a particular area or focus on a specific kind of animal or plant.

So you only get 120 feet, not long range, and you have to tell me what sort of plant you are trying to find. I'll have to think about how specific that needs to be, but I'm fine with the ability as it is written. If it comes up in a combat or time pressure situation, I might make you be more specific, but with no time pressure you can cycle through types to find what you want.

The Midnight Mirror

I just noticed that when I took the tagless map of the colony, it stripped off the scale as well. I have added a scale marker, and also a circle with a 120' radius that you can move around to get an idea of distances.

Ah, cool thanks, I didn't spot the 120 limit, doh!

Yeah, I figure probably the best use at this time is to detect the health of individual blades of grass and try to find any that are crushed from foot steps or trees that might have been slashed or burned when warband type stuff get crazy. Makes a interesting improve tracking device, though obviously it's not gonna do crap against anyone who just walks carefully, is light, or any number of other issues, but I can probably rule out crazy raving orc warband or such. :P

Do we have a loot-tracking sheet?

If not, we can use a tab in my tracking sheet.

The Midnight Mirror

Gervase started one: Loot Sheet.

I'll add it to the campaign links.
