The Midnight Mirror

Welcome to the Ruins of Azlant AP!

Besides the AP Players' Guide, please read my Campaign Introduction with houserules on character creation, and the Downtime and Crafting rules. You will also want to be familiar with the Aquatic Combat rules. I have links to all of these on the Campaign Info tab.

Please talk to each other as you create your characters. We want to have a reasonably well-rounded party. You are welcome to have backgrounds that involve already knowing one or more of the other PCs if you want.

Journals
I will keep a Google Doc with a timeline journal recording the events of the campaign from an omniscient point of view. I will have another document listing people and places you encounter. I will allow editing so that you can record your own notes and comments. Both of these are linked at the top of each page, along with the map and images link.

Finally, I highly encourage you to periodically write entries from your characters’ personal journal/diary. All of you are very creative people, and I look forward to collecting those journals to provide a history of the campaign to read over as we progress.

The Midnight Mirror

As you get here, please say hello and introduce yourselves (as players) to each other and get the character conversation rolling.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Howdy all. You may know me from my games or one of my... interesting characters, including our favorite grumpy atheist, Mutahir.

I really look forward to playing an AP with folks who are willing to invest time and creativity into interesting characters, as well as not let it languish for ages between post. I'm afraid to say I lose interest when there is a week or more between individual posts, so hopefully, that won't be a problem with this gang. I also look forward to building up the relationships of our characters, it's going to be FUN!

As for characters, I've got a couple ideas brewing about, but namely, I always want to try a class or idea I haven't done before. So, speaking of people needed at the Colony, I was thinking of some ideas for me...

*A water/eventually wood kineticist who is a farmer with the colony.
*A Trap building ranger who hunts up meat and furs for the colony.
*A Sea Witch/Hedge Witch navigator/medic who's job it is to keep people healthy in the colony.

Hello Everyone and thank-you for the invitation, GM Rinaldo.

Hi Mutahir!

I have read the boss’s Character Creation Guideline. (Sounds like just the type of campaign I like!)

I haven’t read the Downtime/Crafting rules yet, but will get to them over the next day or so.

I adore cooperative tactical combat, roleplay and a reasonably fast-paced game. (At least daily posting)

I prefer punchy, humorous dialogue and tight descriptive writing – as opposed to the novellas/walls of text you sometimes find in PbP APs on these boards.

As for character ideas, I am thinking human, good-aligned and possibly:

Abendego Diver ranger, or
Pearl Seeker paladin (definitely NOT Lawful Jerk or Stick-in-the-mud Good)

I have been working on a backstory that I want to run past GM Rinaldo first. It precludes familial relationships between PCs, though links as co-workers at the Bountiful Venture Company in Almas are a possibility.

In short, I'm here for the fun and look forward to playing with you all!

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

The Diver certainly sounds pretty cool. I know your good with paladins, so I wouldn't worry about you being a stick in the Mud at all. We'll need someone with survival skills though, that's for sure.

.

Hey kids! I'm SpiderBeard or Dave or whatever the hell else you want to call me. I've been playing RPGs for forever and have been GMing Rinaldo in several games for a few years now so time to swap places :D

I have no idea what I want to play so I'll think thoughts and watch what other ideas are until serendipity strikes.

I'm Dorothy/Gwen. I've been in two of SpiderBeard's online games, and I play with Rinaldo offline.

I'm looking at the character creation rules and trying to decide which way to go. I've been thinking of building a forgemaster cleric or an undine bolt ace (with an underwater crossbow), and this might be a good opportunity for either of those. I'll go through the campaign traits and see if anything strikes me.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Is it only the 4 of us or do we have more players incoming?

Also, I think I'm gonna go with a wood kineticist (eventually branching into water) and focus on the long range blasting and debuff support through things like entangling infusions. Anyone want to do tied in backstory? I'm thinking a gal named "Lily" who's parents expected a delicate flower of a girl, and instead got a brick house of a woman who's happy to hit you with a log if you hit on her. Think I'm going profession farmer.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

Also, GM Rinaldo, would you consider a slightly enhanced version of the Basic Phytokineses since the one that's being used is just the "In development version" that never got an update (That I can find) and wasn't even in the book? And I do mean just "Slightly" enhanced, like be able to manipulate small pieces of wood or grow plants slightly better instead of only pruning them.

Basic Phytokineses (According to Siefer on the discussion page)
You can prune and otherwise garden plants within 30 feet without using gardening tools. You can search wooded areas and other plant-heavy areas from a distance as if using the sift cantrip.

Hi Spiderbeard and Gwen. Lovely to 'meet' you.

I'm just about to go to bed, but thought I'd let you all know I'm leaning towards an archery ranger. However, if nobody wants to do front-liner, I could be talked into paladin instead ;)

Starson, I've already sent my backstory to GM Rinaldo for comment. Not sure if it's going to be too out there for him.

.

I was thinking frontliner so I can cover that off!

Yeah, just a little. ;-)

@Starson: Wow, they never fixed that? I'd say that since the focus of the element is primarily on living plants, I wouldn't let you manipulate loose wood, but I would allow for some minor animation of a plant, such as making one rustle or sway, bend a branch, or reach out a vine.

Plunder and Peril Ship 1 Plunder and Peril Ship 2

@Rinaldo: I know right? And that's fine and makes it a little more applicable that just "Gardening powers" which I would assume would be helping plants grow to fit into the farming schtick I'm going with. I'm almost finished writing up my backstory and application, and should have it to you in a bit.

I *love* the Bellis Honey Harvester trait! ;-)

Is that "dungeoneering kit" in your gear the one from Ultimate Equipment?

Please do me a favor and add to your skills list the values for skills that you can make untrained, like Bluff and Sense Motive. It saves me having to look in the skills list, not find what I'm looking for, remember which ability it keys from, find your score, and remember what the bonus for that score it. No problem, happy to do it. And I thought the Honey Harvester trait was to fun not to grab it, so I passed up some of the usual standards. So fun and on flavor for a farmer. Also, I think it is, that is the book I'm pulling it from, I just kinda buy it standard for all characters to make sure i get the useful bobs and bits in there.

BTW, can I get some character building opinion here? I'm still batting around this build a bit and the more I look at basic Phytokineses, even with your being nice allotment, the less I like it, and the more I'm considering switching it out for kinetic cover. You can build houses out of kinetic cover, so at least it would stay mostly on flavor and useful for the colony and wouldn't be a waste of my first wild talent. But it does feel like I'm trading something flavorful in for utility.

The Midnight Mirror

Basic <x>-kinesis is automatic at 1st level for all kineticists, you don't have the option to trade it.

Oops, doy. Everyone was talking about it like you can switch it out. Always read the fine print I suppose. Okay, I feel better about my "Decision" then. :P

.

Okay, in my heart of hearts I want to play a gnomish oceanrider cavalier. Because I love the idea of a ludicrous character having to face reality, and I get to ride a dolphin. However, gnomes are crappy frontliners, cavaliers aren't exactly sexy, and I'd only have occasional access to my mount.

So the alternate idea (which I quite like) is a disgraced paladin gone into a kind of self-imposed exile and thus isn't really happy to be there. Personal conflict between cynicism and faith. Could either go paladin class, or play a completely failed paladin with a fighter class.

Also a viking-style sea rager barbarian could be fun. Give me ambiguity or give me something else. Thoughts?

The Midnight Mirror

So in this particular AP, you would have more opportunity to use a dolphin mount than nearly anywhere else. Obviously not all the time, but there will be times when it could be handy, as evidenced by the fact that the aquatic combat rules are right there in the player's guide.

.

Oh yeah, absolutely. Screw it. I'll go with the cavalier. Nobody plays 'em. They need some love. Maybe not a gnome though. I'll have something up today or so.

All right!

My new Darklands™ exile backstory is coming together nicely.

One question though, GM Rinaldo …

Can I call my ranger Drizz’t? :

Kidding ... kidding! *backs away slowly from the GM* I’m just kidding! ☺

Good for you, Spiderbeard! Perhaps eventually your dolphin and my shark can be friends?

;-)

The Midnight Mirror

Seriously, though, on the backstories: remember you're part of an Andoren colony, so don't be *too* outlandish. The Bountiful Venture Company isn't going to risk its investment on flakes or people it isn't sure will be able to fit into the community. :-)

.

We'll be good! I would never play a character I wouldn't want to put up with as a Gm ;)

I have a couple of things regarding party makeup, covering skills etc.

• Is anyone taking ancient Azlanti as a language? I have have no problem putting a rank into Linguistics at first level
• Is anyone taking magic item crafting feats?

Although I’m still going with the archery combat style at level 2, Gervase is going to be a switch hitter ranger. This is mainly because pure archery is TERRIBLE underwater. There is a feat to make it better that I might end up taking, but still …

Also, I thought Spiderbeard might like a flanking/tanking buddy on the frontline.

I also have a request for GM Rinaldo. I like having a good Will save on high DPR characters, to reduce the risk of being dominated and TPKing your own party.

I could go with a boring Will-enhancing trait like Indomitable Faith, but I noticed a race trait from Humans of Golarion called auspicious tattoo that provides the same benefit mechanically, but has a cool warrior-tribe feel.

I have friends in the military with Southern Cross tattoos that evoke a similar flavor and can see Gervase getting one as a part of an initiation ritual when joining the Gray Corsair cadets.

Unfortunately one of the requirements is being Shoanti, which Gervase is not. I notice the colonist ranger Anya Sandstrider is Shoanti, and thought the auspicious tattoo could also be an icebreaker for the pair, if you allow it GM Rinaldo.

.

A friend up front would be appreciated, although we can see what Gwen makes since clerics can be pretty beefy.

I'm almost done my character. So doing a gnome - I think this concept makes sense for a gnome in a way it doesn't for other races.

The build I'm going for is hybrid mounted/unmounted with a trident/shield on the ground and a lance on the dolphin. I may have a secondary weapon beyond the trident since its only real advantage is that it's piercing.

Torn on first feat. Mounted combat is an obvious no-brainer, however my damage is going to be low thanks to my racial choice, and so power attack is really tempting. Thoughts?

The Midnight Mirror

If Gervase's backstory can include some time among the Shoanti (or another tribal group that might reasonably tattoo you), I'll allow it. (And I've heard of norther-hemisphere sailors getting that tattoo when they first cross the equator.)

Power attack can be pretty useful at first level, where 2 more damage can be 25-50% of the target's hit points. It comes down to whether you are more concerned with ending a fight faster, or protecting your mount from the occasional heavy hitter.

@GM Rinaldo, I wanted to make sure you approved the back story before giving Gervase her own alias.

Similarly, the Character Sheet was originally planned to make sure you were happy with the template I was using. I stole it from an online friend and surprised myself by getting all the Crunch done yesterday except for the equipment.

(The gear is his. I’ll sort out Gervase’s inside the next 10 hours or so and also submit her letter of application).

Thank-you for the auspicious tattoo! (Gervase’s upper arm is a bit tender this morning)

The Cinderlands is a long way from the the Inner Sea proper, and ideally I’d like a barbarian tribe that is waterborne.

Is an exiled Shoanti Letter-of-Marque group harassing Chelish shipping, but based in the Shackles acceptable?

Or what about a Garundi Berber-analogue from Eastern Rahadoum or Thuvia?

The Midnight Mirror

I don't think Shoanti as a rule are very sea-going, so that doesn't really fit. I could believe a desert tribe.

How about the Ekujae Elves of the Mwangi Expanse? They are big into tattoos.

I have some changes I'll make to the crunch, but here's a backstory! Application letter and other fluff incoming.

Backstory:

The Eagle Knights loom large in Andoran, and stories of their heroism, bravery and selfless do-gooding enthralled the children. None moreso than the gnomes, and in particular Gilstrom. All gnomes fear the bleaching, and after an encounter with dying bleached gnome, he saw the knights as a way out. The gnomes around him were aimless, meandering, and chaotic. Order and discipline would give him the basis he needed to seek out truly new experiences.

Unfortunately, random gnomes don’t just get to be Eagle Knights. So he joined the navy. Growing up with the riverfolk gave Gilstrom a love of the water, a natural athleticism, and a certain amount of gumption. Every ship needs crew, and Gilstrom was a quick learner. He spent a year with the navy, thriving in the military climate and learning the soldier’s life. However, like gnomes do, he became bored.

That’s when he noticed the dolphins, and began to speak to them. It was Persephone who convinced him to leave the Andoran military and come see the ocean. He called her Persephone as a joke, but her dolphin name was untranslatable and he came up with something silly and ostentatious instead. He left the military and on her back, he explored. As he explored, he found things to do. Rights to wrong. He didn’t need to be an Eagle Knight. He could be something better.

Gilstrom is now a figure of minor notoriety in Almas. A red-plumed gnome with a dolphin, a lance, and a hero complex. He’s been called a few things, some of which he loves, other he hates. Fishbait, due to his size and red-plumed helmet is not a favourite. The Dolphin Knight is one he prefers more. However, swimming around the coast beating up goblins was another dead-end. He wanted to see something more.

Ms Ramona Avandth,
Talmandor’s Bounty Second Wave Expedition Leader
Bountiful Venture Company
Almas, Andoran

Dear Ms Avandth:
Hello. My name is Gervase Goldhawk. I don’t believe we met during my internship at the Receiving department of the Bountiful Venture Company in the summer of 4713.

I was interested to receive a letter from my supervisor at the time Mr Rynoldo, encouraging me to apply for a position with your firm for your second expedition to Talmandor’s Bounty.

I am 20 years old, single and a graduate of the Holy Arrow Diocesan School for Girls, where I was captain of the swimming team and earned the Sixth Form Endeavor award for history. Upon matriculation, I was granted a cadetship with the Gray Corsair Reserves as a trainee Midshipman. I live off base locally with my father, along with a number of rescue-dogs, and one rescue-wolf.

In my spare time I enjoy reading, camping, bow-hunting, boating and fishing.

My obligation to the Gray Corsairs ends in ten days. While I have been offered a commission in the Naval Regulars I have decided not to accept that honor.

My three years in the Corps of Sea Cadets has taught me about teamwork, resourcefulness, discipline and perseverance. However, the requirement to remove myself from the concerns and joy of community life, combined with the lack of freedom to exercise my own initiative and assume responsibility for the areas of my life I have some knowledge about, have led me to consider other opportunities.

If accepted for the expedition, I would be pleased to be contribute to the fishing and foraging efforts at Talmandor’s Bounty. I possess a journeywoman’s level of bow-crafting, have skills in animal training, horsepersonship and could help drill the local militia. I would also be delighted to provide community swimming lessons!

Thank you for considering my application. I am available for an interview at short notice if you require more information about any aspect of my submission.

Yours sincerely,
Gervase Goldhawk

From the desk of Gilstrom Noblewater

To Ramona Avandth, leader of the Talmandor's Bounty Second Wave Expedition.

Dear Madam,

Salutation and greetings, or in the tongue of my people: cyfarchion. I am Gilstromiggungolath Noblewater, although go by the diminutive 'Gilstrom' with the human folk, please excuse the pun. Please consider this my application to join the second wave of colonists to Talmandor's Bounty. As a gnome, it is vital for my continued health to seek out new experiences, and I cannot think of a greater one than the rediscovery of ancient Azlant. I believe I can be of aid to the colony in many ways.

I am a veteran of the Andoran Navy having completed a tour where I served on The Thunder as alternately swabber, cabin gnome, rigger, sailor, mate, boatswain, and quartermaster. It is important to try one's hand at every job available! As well, I am a skilled combatant and a strong swimmer. With me, I offer the services of my companion and mount Persephone, a dolphin. Since leaving the navy I have traveled along the coast with Persephone aiding Andoran against local threats.

What I bring to the colony is a warrior for protection, a sailor for navigation and transportation, and the literal - I assure you I am not making this up - services of a dolphin who can provide food, reconnaissance, and underwater exploration. Please find enclosed letters of reference from Captain Baha of the Thunder, and from Mayor Grundy of Claes whom I helped with a sahuagin problem a few months ago.

Warmly,

Gilstromiggungolath Noblewater aka the Dolphin Knight

Okay so crunch v2 is done, including stats for the dolphin. I didn't pick up some typical cavalier stuff because I'm pretty sure dolphins don't need feed. I do have an exotic saddle.

On equipment I'm looking for a few things on the list:

- Decorative helmet. I put this down for 10 gp.
- Six tubs of dolphin polish. I made this up. I said 1 gp each.
- A pair of goggles. 1 gold? I dunno.

Appearance:

Gilstrom is unusually strong and tall for a gnome, standing roughly 3'8 and at around 40 pounds. He has rough brown skin with enormous, brilliant green eyes and a shock of blue hair which is normally trapped beneath his ostentatious red-plumed helmet. He wears an armored coat everywhere he goes with a dolphin patch sewn onto the breast. As well, he carries a slightly warped wooden shield with a dolphin painted on the front - it looks like the shield has been repeatedly repainted.

Personality:

Gilstrom is well-meaning and earnest. He is convinced that by adopting his over-romanticized idea of what knights do, he'll live a fascinating and interesting life. He has an overly formal manner, although can be convinced to drop the act quickly enough. Like most of his race, he is excitable, mercurial, and capable of spectacular displays of emotion. However, above all else he is dedicated to helping others and is brave to a fault.

As long as you are somewhere it can hunt, and you can give it a reasonable amount of time each day to do so, then you are good. If for any reason it doesn't have opportunity or location to hunt, you'll want some sort of backup "rations".

Works for me, however much you spend determines how decorative it is.

What machanical benefit (if any) are you expecting to get? If they are purely decorative, then anything from a few silvers up is fine. If you are looking for a bonus to some checks, then they would fall under the category of "tool" or "masterwork tool", depending.

What book is Oceanrider from, by the way? I want to read up on it.

Also, note that dolphin animal companions don't get blindsight until 4th level. PRD reference

And I have no idea how Paizo came up with "6xCON minutes" for dolphin Hold Breath; real world dolphins hold their breath for 10-15 minutes. I am going to give that some thought; I may lower that 2x CON.

A few more notes for everyone:

1. I am open to house rules. If you have a request (like Lily's about the basic phytokinesis) for a modification to a rule, just ask. The worst I can do is say no. :-)

2. If you have crafting skill, you may want to spend some of you starting wealth on materials to take with you. Your journey to Ancorato will be six weeks by boat, and I am willing to allow a certain amount of that time to be used on crafting that can reasonably be done aboard ship, given that you have very little space to work in (there are 40+ passengers, their gear, and supplies for the colony, in addition to the crew).

From the top!

- The helmet is just a regular helmet but has a high-quality red plume.

- Goggles are for flavour since they don't negate anything. They just seem practical.

- Oceanrider is from Aquatic Adventures. Page 53. The Order of the waves is from the same page.

- Cool on blindsense.

- I'll look into anything that I think needs to be house-ruled since I'm playing a class that's really meant to be on a horse and there may be weirdness.

That said one thing I can at least ask about is that there's a feat tree I really want for the dolphin that leads to http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/charge-through-combat/. However, it requires power attack... which needs 13 strength. Persephone has 12 strength. Any options for me to work with this? Otherwise I get it at level 10 rather than level 5.

Cool! With respect to crafting on board.

The tree question was simply in relation to the types of wood best suited for crafting bows, with yew traditionally being viewed as the best.

Weirdly, I access these threads from about 4 different devices during the day, so bookmarking is a pain or flat out doesn't work, and it just makes my life easier if I can go to my character page instead of hunting out the message.

Also, my character is pretty open, and I specifically tried to leave open a couple years of "Out traveling", does anyone want to have met up before?

Lily, meetup sounds great!

If you suggest an approximate year and place, such as:

• During a camping/hiking trip in rural Andoran (maybe not in Bellis though)
• At a pub/nightclub in Augustana (or another non-Almas Andoran city) a few weeks ago
• Interns at the Bountiful Venture Company over the summer school holidays one year (as friends or rivals)
• Make something up set on a coastal area of Andoran, or actually on the Inner Sea itself ...

And I’ll follow your lead.

@GM Rinaldo, are we OK to post backstories? I can/might turn down ‘that angle’ in Gervase’s backstory. Thoughts?

Question: any chance we can get a game thread to dot in?

Sorry, it shows up on *my* campaign page, so I assumed the discussion thread was enough for everyone. Gameplay thread created.

Absolutely! Gameplay thread is open for backstory, journaling, and so forth.
