Facing the two snarling dogs alone, Hieronymous makes a very fast tactical retreat. He darts past the second dog and it snaps at his heels, but is unable to grab him. The dogs follow in eery silence as the glide along behind almost close enough to grab him, before he runs into the light of the surface above where they yelp and backpedal, returning to the cool darkness of the dungeon.

After a few tense seconds trying to get Garrok and Zaf calmed back down, you regroup and reassess.

You're back in the courtyard with the horse and the fear effects have worn off of everyone. Just let me know what you want to do next.

Bleeding and feeling quite q bit of pain, Hieronymous drops to his knees, catches his breath, and then stands uncertainly as he brandishes the wand.

Looking down at his injuries, he says, "Never thought I would be relieved to feel so much pain, didn't think I would make it back."

He stumbles over and uses the wand on Ithrinniel until she is mostly healed.

Wand of Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

That'll leave both of us missing one hit point. I am thinking you might have been a bit charitable Riatin, but what do I know? Hieronymous owes you his life!

"Thank the gods, they must all have been looking out for me this day."

Hey Riatin, did I hit that thing both times, or only when I burned the hero point? Just trying to guess how much I injured it.

As charitable as I'd like to have been the dice were simply not your friend. I didn't really cut you much slack, so you escaped on your own merit. That's one of the things I like about the coded dice roller, you see exactly how things go. You did hit it both times, but you also noticed that your spear may not have pierced as deep as it normally would.

As soon as Hieronymous is healed, Ithrinniel leaps toward him and smothers him with a giant hug "I'm so glad you are safe! I was so worried when I saw you appear covered in so much blood!". Nuala glares at Hieronymous for a few seconds, but then swoops over to perch a moment on his shoulder...a sign of caring, even if Nuala's claws do leave a bit of a mark on him....

Hieronymous flushes a bit, and then smiles, returning the embrace and then looking admirably at Nuala.

"Thank you Ithrinniel," he says as he attempts to gracefully back out of the hug without seeming rude or, even worse, creepy. "It really is amazing that we both got out of there alive, both of our injuries were pretty serious. Had you not been there to take that bite instead of me, I might be Yeth Hound food!" He smiles again.

When Garrokmal and Zaf have both calmed down, he says, "I know nobody here is going to like what I have to say, but I think we have to go back down there. Those things are nocturnal hunters, and we have left open the door to their cage. Once night falls, I expect they will hunt us, or possibly even head for Sandpoint to feast. If we fight them now, while it is daylight, we can at least run again."

"What do all of you think?"

He meanders a bit as his companions mull over what he has said, muttering half to himself, "The spear wasn't too effective, I'll have to try the mace." He secures the spear to his backpack and readies his mace, feeling to make sure the silver dagger is still at his side, just in case.

So after your ordeal there, you guys can give me some knowledge checks to learn a few things from it:

Hiero, another knowledge: Planes check
Zaf, you can make any of these knowledge checks
Garrok, Knowledge: Dungeoneering
Ithrinniel, Knowledge: Arcana and Knowledge: Planes

These checks can give you some valuable information if you choose to go back down.

After regaining his senses, a wave of embarrassment comes over Garrok... "I'm sorry, friends - I failed you down there. I'm glad everyone made it out of there alive - all of you."

"Now what shall we do? At the very least, I'm going to need that sword back..."

If panic makes you "drop anything held" - I assume that means the +1 longsword is now on the floor of that chamber. Is the shield as well, or is that strapped on?

Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

The shield would be strapped on.

@Hieronymous:
You recall another section from the book you read about these beasts in that once someone had been exposed to their howl, it didn't seem to effect them again for 24 hours.

@Garrok:
You noticed that the weapon strikes did not strike as deeply as they should.

As he meanders about, listening to Garrokmal, Hieronymous turns, his eyes open wide.

"I remember now, one more fact about Yeth Hounds, once exposed to the howl of one of the foul beasts, one can endure the howl without losing themselves for up to a day."

A look of confidence in his eyes, he smacks his mace into his left hand.

"Ready yourselves my friends, the time to strike is now."

Grasping his Mace tightly, he moves back to the doorway that will lead them back down to face the Hounds once again, waiting for his companions to join him.

With his free hand, he grabs and hefts his warhammer from his belt. "Perhaps this will prove a greater threat?"

Though he wouldn't admit it, it takes some effort to hide the hesitation in his voice, saying "If the Oracle is remembering correctly, then we have faced the worst they have to assault us with. I agree - we should go back now, and put and end to those things."

"Silver!" Hieronymous exclaims, producing the dagger he had been carrying around.

He turns to Garrokmal, offering the weapon, "I think it will do you the most good!"

Would it be possible for us to melt down silver pieces as Zaf suggested? Also, I agree, amazing song!

Considering where you're at and how much work it would be, I feel it would be pretty difficult to get anything together that would actually work very well in battle. If you wanted to, you could spend an hour or so working to make something that would make your first hit count as silver (like how poison works) but after that it would be normal (taking the time would be pretty risky). There are a couple options 1)Get silver weapons 2) Purchase silversheen or 3) A weapon with enough magic can bypass silver.

Ithrinniel rummages around in her backpack with a raised eyebrow, humming the tune of Zaf's song...Well, I don't have any silver weapons. Garrokmal turns the dagger offered by Hieronymous over in his hands - it looks tiny next to his oversized features. "Even at my best, this little thing would take time to wear down those beasts; I saw what you and the witch looked like when you came up from down there - any longer and you'd still be down there, feeding them." He looks at the horse, then down the hall toward the chest.

"As bad as the idea of returning to town with the job unfinished sounds, it's better than deliberately walking back down there tired and nearly unarmed. The fight against Lamashtu won't hinge on killing those two hounds right now - we need to live to fight again tomorrow. I think we should load up what we can and get back to town. We'll see if my friend Savah can help us with weaponry. Then, we come back rested will all our power to bear. We'll have to take our chances against that terrible howl." The thought sends shivers down his spine, and he is embarassed.

Barring any objections, he begins to distribute gear and coin from the chest.

Unless there's a problem with bringing everything back (seems like we should have more than enough carry capacity), of course...

That verse was brilliant, DW - nicely done. :)

"I understand why you don't want to go back down there, and if none of the rest of you want to go back I have no choice, I'll not throw my life away needlessly."

He turns around, walks a few steps away from Garrokmal, and then turns back.

"What I don't understand is why you don't see what even a blind man can see, those beasts are night hunters, freed from their cage, and I am willing to bet as soon at the sun sets they'll be after us. They'll catch us and we'll have no sunlight to run to, and then they'll follow our trail back to Sandpoint... I might be wrong, but if I am right..."

"Perhaps we can get back to town and then back here before they escape."

Zafzalurg considers and finally nods grimly, coming to a conclusion.

"Hieronymous sees the truth, but if we won't be able to fight the hounds, or rather fight them and win, what choice do we have save to improve our equipment back in Sandpoint? Might there be a better way to get back to town? Heal the horse for one or two of us to ride back, restock and return? Maybe there's a skiff or watercraft moored hereabouts. I certainly could pilot a boat for us and it would throw the dogs of our trail."

The gnome shrugs and grins, pack reset for the hike back.

"Who knows? Now that we've scouted the situation, maybe the good sheriff will see the threat for what it is and send us back with a soldier or twelve."

Weary and wounded you make your way back to the road, guiding the horse across the bridge with care. The treasure you've managed to acquire slows you down with its weight, but you know that it will help you and the town of Sandpoint in the long run.

You approach the old North gate and Emit is there standing watch. He welcomes you back with a friendly wave and opens the door wide for yourselves and the horse. "Looks like you gave them goblins a good what for. I hope to hear the tale soon enough, the Mayor will be awaiting news."

Garrokmal raises his hand to Emit, the weight of the day clearly taking its toll... "Some goblins, yes - and a chieftain at that." He turns the dented remnant of Ripnugget's "crown" over in his hand. "But our work is not done - we should tell the mayor right away."

He turns to Zaf, "Savah will be there when we need her - we should tell the mayor what we know and that the fight isn't over."

"I'd like to take this horse to the stable, but that's on the far side of town - we'll bring it with us for now." He sets off toward the town hall.

Sorry for being slow - my computer time at home is now combined with play time with these little guys, so not much has gotten done lately. I'll have my office back to myself in a few weeks.

Assuming we were able to haul everything we collected at Thistletop back, my list is below - is it accurate? If there's a weight issue, we could lose all the non-masterwork goblin stuff, whatever.

1 Masterwork Dagger (pearl handle)
1 potion of Cure Light Wounds
4 potions of Cure Moderate Wounds
3 Masterwork small Horsechoppers
3 small daggers
1 small shortsword
1 small +1 shortsword
1 small shortbow
20 arrows
1 small whip
4 small leather armors
1 small masterwork breastplate
1 small masterwork dogslicer
1 leather pouch
34 badly flawed malachites worth 1 gp each
1 Medium chain shirt
1 Medium masterwork scimitar
1 normal manacles (swapped by G for MW)
1 gold holy symbol of Sarenrae worth 100 gp
1 jade necklace worth 60 gp
1 fine blue silk gown with silver trim worth 150 gp.

7,432 cp
2,490 sp
89+12= 101 gp

Hieronymous, feeling more tired than he realized, waves at Emit and attempts a smile, "There's a bit less evil in the world today."

He then follows his companions to the mayor.

Emit nods and sends a runner to the Mayor, alerting her of your return.

"A chieftain?" He spits on the ground. "Good riddance to the rubbish. I'm glad that Sandpoint has you on our side. I'm sure the Mayor will be eager to speak to you." You can't be certain, but you think that a glimmer of hope returns to the old guards eyes as you ride into town.

You approach the town hall and the Mayor comes out to greet you, Father Zantus in tow.

"I think Sandpoint is safe for now, but there's something more, something darker, that we still need to figure out. There were plans for additional attacks on the town involving the sinspawn that we found below the glassworks. The sinspawn are dead, and now Warchief Ripnugget and a number of his minions have been killed at Thistletop... We should be free from any additional attacks.

"But what we found on the lower level was a more sinister evil - more Lamashtu worship and her demonic minions so terrible we were forced to retreat while we could still draw breath. What we need are silver weapons - anything less and we'll only make them angry while they tear us apart.

"Luckily, we found some hoarded coin and a few weapons I think Savah will be glad to put to better use. Oh, and this poor beast was boarded up in there, too." He nods to the horse, and the bags carried by himself and the others, heavy with money and items.

"We need to see if Savah or anyone else in town carries any silver weaponry, we need to rest, and then we need to hurry back there and finish exploring the lower levels. Only then will we know where to turn in order to tear out this evil by the root."

Ithrinniel gently pats the horse, trying to keep it calm as it nervously paces and glares at the mayor. "Is there anyone here trained in weakening or destroying demons with magic? If there are scrolls, or texts for us to study, Nuala and I could make good use of them...so far my studies have been devoted to bringing lustrous ancient civilizations back to life, but now that I've witnessed such potential horror...I certainly wouldn't hesitate to learn how to destroy a demon, or two, or twenty. Otherwise, we'll have to resort to studying thaumaturgy for our next encounter."

The Mayor absorbs your words thoughtfully rubbing at her chin with worry while Father Zantus stands uneasily. "I suspected there was more to this than simple goblin attacks. But why now? I see no cause for these attacks." She thinks further, then visibly resolves herself.

"We must end this threat, I cannot sleep soundly with my people in danger. Go and see Savah, I'm sure that she will have something to aid you. I will send a message to Gandethus, he's our local experts on the supernatural around here, he may have further knowledge. I'll also call for Ameiko, she was once an adventurer too, with all of us together, we'll come up with something. Meet back here in two hours."

Deverin puts her hand out to the horse and it nuzzles her. "A fine beast to save from such savagery. He reflects the noble spirit of Sandoint itself, surrounded by cruelty." She wanders back into the town hall, speaking lowly with Father Zantus.

You all make your way back to Savah's Armory and the little bell chimes as you make your way through the door. Savah looks up from her workbench where she's descaling rust from a helm. She grins wide as she see you and gets up to clap you on the shoulders and shake hands. "My favorite customers have returned. Fit and hale no less, I am glad to see. Tell me of your battle with the goblin chieftain while I look through your chest of spoils here."

"Savah! I count myself lucky that we do meet again. Things were going well - we killed a goblin warchief, that was encouraging - but then we found some creatures from a dark and powerful plane that my friends here, specialized as they are in these sorts of matters, believe to be vulnerable to silver. I know it's a lot to ask, but have you one or two items of that sort that my stout friend here and I might use against them?"

He considers the shield hanging off of his right shoulder... "I think this thing may be holding back my fighting skills - I may also be in the market for a large axe or sword if you have something special around."

I'm thinking about switching G to 2-handed, or at least having something available to try. Sword-and-board doesn't feel very barbarian-y, especially as he gains rage powers.

Also, I did not tally the value of any of the items listed above - the gp/sp/etc numbers are just actual coin found. I couldn't find values for things like "masterwork small horsechopper," so if you give us a value for everything except the potions, that'll work.

I'm a little surprised Ithrinniel hasn't spoken up about that necklace - jade's right in her wheelhouse... ;)

Alright, so the weapons and armor sell for 2420 gp, I'll assume you're keeping the potions, gems and valuables sell for 344. The manacles sell for 7gp and the pouch sells for 1gp.

I think you'll probably like the outcome for 2handed more but I didnt want to be too much influence on your character, sword and board has plenty of usefulness.

Garrokmal's eyes go wide... "Savah, if I didn't know you better I would think you were trying to seduce me! These are wonderful!" he hefts the greatsword and admires its sheen. He catches his reflection in the wide blade and grimaces. He picks a dark red shred of barbarian chew from his teeth. "Let's see how those demons react to this."

Garrok belatedly turns to Ithrinniel, considering her inquiry. "The people you want to see are on the far end of town - Vorvashali Voon and Hannah Velerin are not the sort of people I consort with, but I can point you in their direction." As you can see, they are 44 and 45 on the Sandpoint map. "You may also want to pay a visit to old Niska. I don't know if she would have things to sell, but she is also some kind of historian."

I regularly do a quick ctrl-A, ctrl-C in the text field to make sure I don't lose these posts... Yeah, the board can be flaky. :(

Quick money math: Converting the CP, SP and PP all to GP, each of the four of us get 806 GP, dropping the remainders. Riatin, can we just do that conversion, or would the moneychanger charge a fee or anything?

Unless there's a GM adjustment, let's all add 806 GP to our funds now and consider the looting resolved.

G will buy the Greatsword, and at some point before going back to the town hall, he'll also stop by his home and drop off the Longbow, arrows and quiver he never uses.

Once everyone has had a chance to shop/inquire, we'll end up back at the Town Hall!

Oh, BTW, Riatin: HL doesn't have a "silver" weapon material, it's either Alchemical Silver or Silversheen (which is super cool). Are these "alchemical silver," or should I just enter it like a normal Greatsword.

Normally I copy to the clipboard before I hit post, just this time I forgot, oh well, just some flavor texty stuff really.

I highly recommend hanging on to a ranged weapon, better to have it and not need it.

I was going to bring Gandethus in for Ithrinniel to consult as he's generally a good font this knowledge and an established character.

Silver means Alchemical Silver, after saying silver for so many years its not easy to change.

Savah gives Garrok a bit of a wink. "Some girls have better charms than others, you know. Those beasties will run for the hills when they see you swinging that around."

Wishing the little spear Savah produces was a bit longer, Hieronymous opts to purchase the heavy mace, hoping that bashing silver will do as much damage to the evil creatures as stabbing silver would do.

"I'll gladly take that mace off your hands Savah!", offering up the 102 gp. He then proceeds to sell his ordinary heavy mace.

Sorry about the slow reply to any of this, been feeling crappy the last couple weeks. Adding 806 - 102 + 6 = 710 gp to my total coin.

No problem man, I was feeling exceptionally allergenic the last week or so myself.

Savah hands you your new mace and takes the old mace in exchange. She notes the goblin blood and says, "I know that'll be put to good use."

She takes in the rest of the group and asks, "Anyone else need one of these fine weapons?"

Though the gnome feels his magic dagger would be up to the task, Zafzalurg sudden;y feels underprepared without his own sliver weapon. Plus, you just never know...

"Savah, I would gladly give that silver rapier a good home, if you're willing to part with it."

She looks at the rapier and back at the gnome with a raised eyebrow. "This one? This is a feisty one." She says while demonstrating a fencer's flourish. "She is what you call, high maintenance. But I trust you to keep her...sated." She says with a wink and presents you the pommel.

"I suppose that's what we need for now, my friend. You're really handy in a pinch!"

Getting his new sword balanced across hi back, he turns and heads toward the Town Hall.

"See you all in the Mayor's office."

Hieronymous hefts the new mace, turning it over in his hands, "That'll do nicely Savah!"

He smiles at her, secures the mace to his belt and then follow the half-orc.
