Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio stopped as everything went pitch black. Moments later she heard Tarov and Julian call out a warning, so she grabbed her spear in preparation. She paused briefly to consider the situation. "This must be magic of some form... Blindness? Or perhaps darkness of some sort? If it's the latter there's some extent to it, if it's the former then I'm probably the only one affected." "I assume you two can see. Are we in darkness, or am I blinded? If it's darkness, can you tell how far it extends?" she called out to the others.
If she gets a response as to how far out the edge is she'll move to exit the darkened area and draw her bow. Otherwise she'll try to defend herself in place (total defense).

The darkness spreads for about fifteen feet beyond where Yukio was - and mere moments later, the two foes drop from the ceiling, angling to shoot right into their targets.

The one aiming for Julian flew right by him instead of latching on, but the one aiming for Yukio - who'd moved outside of the darkness - managed to slam right into her and whip its many tendrils around. Unfortunately for it, she was just a bit too slippery to be caught, and the attempt to grapple her failed before it could even begin.
Party's up.

Julian attempted to slash the one that had tried to whip him but his swordsman ship was sloppy. He followed it up with an attempt to shock the creature with his grasp. With his actions exhausted he moved into a position that Tarov or someone could use to their advantage.
"Flying Menace!" He cursed as he circled around. "Anevia fall back into the tunnel, do it slowly we got these pests!"

As she exited the darkness she began to draw her bow to take a shot at the two enemies. Before she had a chance to do anything though, her foe was on top of her. Yukio took a step back from the creature after having just barely escaped its grasp. With the foe pressing in on her already she had no time to try to concentrate on identifying it, so she struck out at it hoping to catch it with a quick jab from her spear.

The creature crashed to the ground under the combination of magic and martial might, and the area of darkness disappeared. The other three carefully edged forward, two of them moving around.
"Well? What were those?" Aravashnial asked sharply. "Any sign of demons yet?" Horgus stiffened slightly at those words, glancing nervously towards the bodies of the creatures.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov looks around, relaxing slightly as the darkness disappears. "Not a clue, lad," he tells the Riftwarden. "But 'ey mighta been. Th' rest o' ya, search the area. There's somethin' 'bout this place I don' like."
Julian Fey |
Julian nods, twirling his scimitar before sheathing it and drawing his sickle once more. Feeling more handy with it out then he did his Scimitar. "Aravashnial, please stop mentioning those. It makes me nervous..." He tried to be kind but the Wardens constant mentioning of demons was troublesome.

He looks around the room, searching for anything useful. "Aravashnial, there appears to be statues of different crusader armor. Their expressions appear to be sad or disapproving. Hard to tell with those stuffy types..." If Aravashnial is interested he explains whatever details he can.
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio braced herself for another attack from the creature, but it never came. "Ugghh." she groaned, the pain from her wounds washing over her as the adrenaline wore off. "Now I'm really wishing I'd thought to prepare some healing for the day." She propped herself up with her spear and sighed. "I'm surprised I'm still standing." She looked herself over, inspecting the cuts and bruises the creature had left. "It's going to be a long walk without some form of healing."
"Paige..." She stopped herself quickly, looking flustered. "I'm sorry, forgive my manners..." she said with the best bow she could manage. "Lady Sentine, you said you could heal yes?" She looked hopefully at her, hoping she'd not heard wrong.
GM Rednal |
"You should be nervous. It encourages you to pay attention, not grow complacent just because you haven't seen anything yet." the Riftwarden told Julian, apparently ignoring the dwarf's use of 'lad' to refer to him. "What, precisely, are they wearing?" he asked a moment later. "The armor of each generation of crusaders is quite distinct."

The RIftwarden being blind and the rest of them in the dark meant he didn't have to hide his scowl as much as he normally would. He however didn't continue to banter pointlessly with the insecure Riftwarden. I won't leap at shadows but I don't want their attention on us because we keep invoking their name either... If they come. They will die. He tightens his grip on his Sickle as he turned to the task of aiding in the statues identification.

The Riftwardens attitude grated on Julian just enough that he couldn't recall anything useful. So instead he pressed to the only way out of the area they were in to ensure nothing snuck up on them. "I will keep an eye forward just in case Tarov." H moved to the exit and took up position, sickle in one hand and bomb components readied in the other.

Yukio Shadowhare |
Paige's heal washed over her and she felt her pain ease and then fade completely. "Thank you, that helped immensely." Relieved, she took some time to look around the cavern at the various statues, curious about the crusaders they depicted.
"There must have been a sizable population down here at one time to have carved statues of the crusaders. I wonder if there are any still living down here?"
GM Rednal |
The armor on these particular statues is recognizable as the outfits worn in the First Crusade, when the demonic hordes were (temporarily) pushed back by the defenders of Golarion. Most statues weren't made until the crusades were over, so these were probably erected on (or a little after) 4630 AR, making them eighty or ninety years old.
Meanwhile, a flickering light can be seen from the next chamber...

A small campfire and a well-used bedroll, along with a few utensils and tools, sits near another cave opening in the far wall of this cavern. Alongside that, however, a dwarf whirled around as you entered towards the cavern, shrieking as he saw them. "No, no! I won't let you take me!" he shouted, clearly less than totally sane even as he stumbled backwards. Magical energy appeared as armor around him a moment later, and his hands began scrambling over the many pockets on his outfit.

Julian didn't regret taking hold of a bomb as the dwarf appeared to be going on the defensive which, in his mind, would be followed by a quick offense. He had two thoughts in his head, protecting the injured in his party and apologizing later when he knocked this Dwarf on his backside...
Just Ini for now yes?

The dwarf seemed to be casting a Blur spell - fairly helpful for avoiding damage from attacks, if not totally perfect at it. His hands paused at Tarov's words, though, and he lowered them at Yukio's. "Then g-go!" the dwarf said, moving back until he was against the wall and leaving the way to the next chamber open. "Just d-don't come over here!" Coming from a spellcaster of some kind - and with access to at least the second level of spells - that was clearly a warning with at least some backing behind it.
The three companions seemed to be trying to pass through as quickly and quietly as they could, keeping the warriors of the group between them and the crazy dwarf.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov keeps an eye on the dwarf as he leads the other past him. "It's dangerous down 'ere, lad," the knight says, thumbing back the way the group came from. "Consecrated a shrine t' Torag back that way. Should be a might bit safer fer ya than sleepin' in some random cave."
Julian Fey |
Julian's glare could melt ice but he said nothing to contradict his companions. Merely placing himself the entire time between the wounded and the dwarven caster.
Once they were past the dwarf completely and after Tarov spoke his peace Julian added. "Avoid the surface for awhile, Kenebras is under attack."
With that he left the dwarf behind, he glanced over his shoulder from time to time though to ensure they weren't being followed.

A steeply inclined tunnel leads upward to the north, its walls lined with numerous nooks, handholds, and dozens of iron pitons that have been driven into the walls long ago.
Anevia grimaces slightly as she sees the slope. "Ramp up ahead. As long as that crazy dwarf doesn't jump us from behind, I think we can make it. Walk slowly, Riftwarden."
"I think I can manage at least that much." he said tersely. "Are there any other signs of civilization down here?"
"Only civilization we need is some wine and real food..." Horgus muttered under his breath.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov forges ahead, eyes peeled. "Least we're movin' up, now. That's a good sign," he says.

He rolls his shoulders as he watches back down the way they came. "Don't worry Anevia, I have your back. You just worry about making your way up there an..." He stops, having embarrassed the injured woman enough over the last few hours.
He quickly counts out his remaining supplies. "Six capuslate's remaining. Full extracts as well. Adequate." And the last resort if needed...

As they walked on Yukio's mind drifted off, wondering what was going on up above and about the situation in general. "This will make quite a tale if we make it out of here. I'm not sure father would even believe me."
GM Rednal |
After a steep climb of nearly sixty feet - which took almost five minutes for Anevia and Aravashnial to struggle through, injured and blind as they respectively were - the caverns seemed to level out somewhat and proceed deep into the darkness. The walk forward, with only a bit of magic to light the way, took another half an hour in quiet and darkness, broken by Horgus' increasingly frequent comments of concern. Finally, the tunnel opens into a large cavern, about seventy feet across. Cylindrical rock formations along the walls arch up to make a domelike chamber, but the walls and floor are riddled with cracks. At the center of the cave, a stone tower that may once have reached the fifty-foot-high ceiling has collapsed onto its side...
As Julian moves, he sees two figures up ahead, digging frantically at the rubble of the tower and occasionally calling out to each other. They're twisted, rather ugly beings... and Horgus sucked in a deep breath. "Kill them before they notice us!" he hissed.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov looks askance at Horgus. "What's yer problem, lad?" he whispers. Turning to Yukio and Julian, he shrugs. "They look like somethin' t' ya?"
Julian Fey |
" Really Horgus... You suggested abandoning people and now killing the unwary?" Julians laugh was over the irony of what Horgus had said hours ago before he muttered as he brushed past the trumped up human. "And you called me a monster..." Julian was blunt and honest. He was wrong about the dwarf and maybe these creatures weren't so bad either. "Tarov, I can go ahead, if they turn on me we can rush them. Your our strongest and I trust you to watch my back. they though appear to be in a panic, don't they?"
Totally open to Tarov and the others to make actions. I am workng for the rest of the day. But if they don't mind Julian approaching first then he would go and make his presence known to these creatures.

Are they close enough for detect evil?
GM Rednal |
No, they're not close enough for Detect Evil.
Julian's thorough study of the beings is enough to identify them - they're so strange that it wasn't easy, but they appear to be Mongrelmen of some kind. Though generally monstrous in appearance - one of the two you can see seems to be a mixture of elf, goat, and lizard - they're generally thought of as a peaceful group, though they're not entirely trusted by most groups.
Meanwhile, Yukio was just able to catch their conversation. They're speaking in Common, and mostly hissed, hurried directions for the digging.
Julian Fey |
He shudders in the dark at Yukio's addressing him in her usual way. He waves a hand as he puts away his weapon. "Please Yukio, just Julian is fine."
Despite his logic calling it a fools errand, he hoped it wouldn't be in vain. "They are mongrelfolk as far as I can tell. They're known to be peaceful but many distrust them." I know that feeling all too well. "If we approach without our weapons perhaps they will be more at ease, despite the shock they'll have when we appear."
Once Yukio was ready he proceeded forward. Once he was within several yards he announced himself. "Greetings." He swiftly followed this up with. "We mean no harm."
Yukio Shadowhare |
It had always been strange interacting with outsiders back home, they tended to be very relaxed about names and Yukio had never quite gotten used to it. Even since arriving in Kenabres she'd stuck mostly with the warriors she'd travelled with and avoided fraternizing much with the locals. "Very well, Julian it is," she said with a smile.
Casting guidance before walking up with Julian
After saying a brief prayer to Tsukiyo she moved up with Julian to greet the 'mongrelmen'. "Greetings!" she said with a polite bow. "I am Yukio Shadowhare, and this is Mas... err... Julian. We couldn't help but overhear that you're trying to dig something out, is everything alright?"

The closer of the two mongrelmen whirls around as you approach - his companion's face is covered in tumors, and she doesn't look like she can talk well, so it seems he's speaking for both of them. "If your intentions are good, then perhaps you can help. As you can see, misfortune has befallen us." he said, gesturing to the collapsed tower.
"Don't trust them!" Horgus warned loudly - Anevia shot him a dark look, though he didn't seem to notice. The mongrelman hissed slightly, but gestured down into a hole, where a large boulder seemed to have pinned someone down. It looked quite heavy - quite a lot of strength would be needed to move it safely out of the way, and more than these two creatures seemed capable of on their own.
One person can make a Strength check - the others must use Aid Another, and the two Mongrelmen will help.
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio turned slightly red when Horgus called out and turned back to glare at him briefly. "My sincere apologies for our travelling companion's rudeness. We would be happy to help free your friend."
Yukio looked at the boulder and thought about the best way to go about it. After a few moments she settled on a plan of action. "Ok, Julian get on that side, Stalwart over there... and if you two," she said, gesturing to the two mongrel men, "could get to that side perhaps we can get this up."
Setting her pack down she got up against the boulder and prepared herself by invoking Tsukiyo's aid. "Ok, on the count of three. One... Two... Three!" With that she began lifting with all her might praying silently to Tsukiyo that they'd be able to free the poor trapped man.
