Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov rests his weapon over his shoulder. "We can only hope that th' folks topside can take care of 'em," the dwarven knight states, moving to continue down the passage.
Julian Fey |
Aravashnial information was good, a boon and a warning as well. More tunnels meant more exits but it also meant more dangers may lay ahead in the unexplored area they were in. Julian considered it for a moment as he wiped the insect gunk on his Sickle off on the debris in the area.
He stops long enough to pick up the items and set them in his pack.
Will make a treasure spreadsheet for the group~
He looks to the advancing Tarov. "Stalwart. Allow me to go ahead, I can scout the way before we are caught in something to narrow." If the injured pile up behind us, retreat will be near impossible.
"I will toss a light stone if it is all clear. Is that good?"
If no one disagrees ;)

Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov nods at the tiefling. "Better than us all clankin' our way into a bunch o' demons. Stay sharp." The dwarf stays put, a warning hand held out to ensure the others maintain their positions, as well.
Julian Fey |
Nodding to Tarov. He dismisses his light and begins to proceed through the exit, using his darkvision to do the work as he picked his way through the dark. He armed himself with his sickle, just in case...
Perception = 10

Forgot the +5 to stealth. Whoops~

Paige Sentine |
"A light stone needs to be thrown, which means we're lit up for a brief second. I can simply keep my dancing lights ahead of us a short distance, much harder to tell where it's coming from, and noiseless." Paige keeps her sword in hand, gripping it tighter now that she knows there's cockroaches around. She wishes there were demons, rather than vermin, so that she could be useful and strike down the creatures who attacked her home. "Not to mention, any demon worth being afraid of have darkvision. The light is only for our benefit"
Julian Fey |
Julian pauses, turning to look back at Paige as he stood on the threshold.
He was calm as he spoke. "We have two injured, slowing our progress and jamming all of us in a narrow corridor is dangerous. So I will simply go ahead and you may follow as you wish Paladine Paige."
With that he presses forward into the dark, sickle in hand without further delay. Hoping to find a place where eh could treat Anevias injury.
New rolls just in case~

The path forward leads fifty feet or so, opening up into a new room. Several mounds of rock lie in heaps in this cavern, recently fallen from the walls and ceiling. Now and then, bits of dust settle from cracks in the stone above. Just to the side, narrowly hidden amidst the debris, is the coiled shape of some kind of snake. It looks slightly hurt, and may be more violent than animals normally are... though it probably would be possible to just sneak past and leave the animal in peace if everyone was very qui-
"What's the holdup!?" Horgus called, and the snake rose up slightly, hissing wildly.

Julian Fey |
Julian kept his cool, despite Horgus's foolishly angering the snake. Getting bitten wasn't on his priority list today and he needed to stay focused...
Being ahead of everyone else Julian decided to make the best of it and moved towards the snake. Using his acrobatics to get up and around it. Hopefully avoiding getting bitten in the process.
He lands and turns his stance to fighting defensively as he slashes at it with his Sickle.

Paige Sentine |
Whoops, for some reason thought my initiative was Tarov's somehow.
Paige goes right for the injured snake, hoping to cut it down swiftly; frightened, injured animals often had little to lose, and they didn't need to be any worse off than they already were. A single swing of her longsword will hopefully cut the hurt animal down.
Longsword Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Longsword Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Julian Fey |
Seeing as my turn was out of Order I will withdraw my above post if needed, sorry about that Gm Rednal~ :/
GM Rednal |
The snake managed to dodge to the side - agile despite its wounds - and immediately shot towards one of the open areas in Paige's armor.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Though it wasn't a bad attack, precisely, it certainly wasn't accurate enough to land a hit and inject its venom... and the snake hissed fiercely as it drew back for its next blow...
By which point everyone else could act!
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov rushes to Paige's side and strikes out with his weapon, the heavy ball of his dorn-dergar aimed to put down the wounded snake. He grits his teeth as he puts all of his strength into the mighty blow.
Tarov uses the Panthera on the Hunt maneuver to charge the snake (full-round action).
Dorn-Dergar attack (Panthera on the Hunt): 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 = 13
Dorn-Dergar damage (Panthera on the Hunt): 1d10 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 6 + 2 = 14
Manuevers:

Julian Fey |
Seeing as we are all rushing up I am assuming we are in formation then?
Being at the rear of the group Julian waited, unable to tell if his bombs would be a boon or a curse at this point.
Ready Action: Attack with Scimitar if something attacks from behind.
He refrains from looking directly at Horgus, knowing full well that the man would only cause the group more trouble with his loud blathering.
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio watches patiently as the others strike at the snake, looking for an opening. As the snake recoils from the attacks she thrusts with her spear, attempting to skewer it.
Attack(Spear): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 191d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Paige Sentine |
Paige whispers a short prayer of thanks as the bite glances off of her armour, and follows it up with another swing of her blade.
Attack roll: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Damn, Paige just doesn't have it today.
GM Rednal |
The heavy flail just barely failed to strike the snake as it lithely twisted out of the way, though Yukio's spear - hitting as the snake moved - was considerably more accurate. Wounded even more badly, it nevertheless lashed out, pushing five feet forward before attempting to bite into Yukio.
Attack Roll: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
As before, its teeth weren't quite able to find purchase...
"How many of you does it take to kill one tiny little snake!? Just do it already!" Horgus blustered from the back of the group - though there was a small tone of fear in his voice anyway.
"Best way to kill snakes is set a trap for them..." Anevia muttered. "Don't worry, Riftwarden, it shouldn't be coming this way." The two of them wouldn't do so well if they had to turn and run from their enemies...
Yukio Shadowhare |
"If you're unsatisfied with how quickly we're dispatching our foes, sir, you're welcome to take up arms and join the fight," she retorted to Horgus as she planned her next strike. With the spear still planted in the snake, Yukio gripped tightly and twisted, wrenching the spear free from the snake. Pulling back, she thrust again quickly, aiming for the serpent's head this time.
Attack(Spear): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 181d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Paige Sentine |
Paige snarled, growing frustrated with her inability to strike the damned serpent, made only worse by Horgus's complaints behind her. She swung her blade down at it yet again furiously, looking to lop its head clean off.
Longsword Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Longsword Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov strikes out with his dorn-dergar once again, trying to aim more carefully to hit the snake, and calls to Paige, "Aim for it's throat!"
Tarov attacks the snake (standard action) then uses Aid Another to increase Paige's to-hit (move action).
Dorn-Dergar attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Dorn-Dergar damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Aid Another (@Paige, to-hit +5): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 Doesn't mean the DC. :/
GM Rednal |
Fortunately, Yukio's blow was enough to pierce through the snake's head - and a bit of the ground - ending its threat once and for all. All three of the non-combatants looked rather relieved once it was clear the animal was dead and would be no longer blocking their way forward. Ahead of it, the only thing visible was a long tunnel - and neither light nor darkvision came anywhere close to showing the end of it. It was just wide enough for people to pass through one at a time.
No treasure in this chamber.
Paige Sentine |
Paige sighed with relief as the snake finally fell, but was quick to spin on her heel and walk back toward Horgus. A flick of her wrist activated the spring in her wrist sheath, sending a dagger popping into her grasp that she grabbed by the blade, urging the handle toward the insufferable man. "If you'd like to help us kill things faster, then by all means, we could use it. But if you won't, please, keep quiet."
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov nods at Paige's words. "No good reason fer ya to be bellyachin' like a child. If ya can't man up, then hide behin' the Riftwarden. Fella can't e'en see, and he ain't complainin'!" The dwarf's tone is frustrated at the man's repeated whining, but he doesn't do anything else to chide the man. "Now 'nough o' that, let's keep movin'."
Julian Fey |
wincing as the shouting and fighting continued ahead, Julian continued to wait patiently until it was over. Hearing no call for aid he sighed with relief.
Continue readied action until combat ended. Julian wasn't about to let down his guard...
Julian remained in the rear with Horgus as everyone gave sound advice and simultaneously admonished Horgus for all his nagging. Julian however was more focused on anything coming at them from behind as he spoke quietly to Horgus. "It'll be way less stressful for you if you just let them do their job. Cave fighting is difficult for everyone save for that dwarven warrior. His people are used to it. If you want a weapon though you can use one of mine..." He offered his Scimitar but didn't expect the man to take him up on his offer...
GM Rednal |
The man sputtered a bit, clearly unhappy with the developments. "Ridiculous and you know it..." he muttered. "The sooner we're out of here, the better off we'll be."
"Indeed, if I have to listen to him whine the whole way..." the Riftwarden muttered darkly. "The way ahead is clear, is it not? Then let us proceed forward at once." he added, a commanding tone returning to his voice as his assistant just kept her mouth closed in order to avoid screaming at the pain in her leg.
Julian Fey |
Perception - To notice discomfort?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Julian Fey |
Julian's calm cracked, seeing someone in pain wasn't something he enjoyed prolonging. It also stirred the blackness in his heart, something he hated more than anything else. He tried to ignore it for now while focusing on moving forward instead, hopefully they would find a safer place sooner rather then later. "I've got them covered back here Paladine Paige. Lets keep moving forward."
"Aravashnial, please rely on Horgus as your guide instead. So that Anevia can lean on me, i'd like to get her off her leg as much as possible for now." Or else setting it will be more painful later...
How fast are we moving? Or does it matter? ;D
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio was a tad surprised when Julian rearranged the group so he could help Anevia out. "Clearly the stories of the tieflings we were told don't apply to all of them. Though perhaps that shouldn't surprise me either, given the stories I've overheard about my own people during the past months," she thought as she watched, smiling despite herself at the gesture.
"When we get a chance to rest I can pray to Tsukiyo for healing magic. I'm afraid I wasn't expecting to be healing anyone today," Yukio said to Anevia as Julian began helping her along. "I'm not much of a healer, but even if it can't mend your leg, perhaps it would at least ease the pain," she said hopefully. "And let me know if you'd like to switch at some point Master Fey," she added sincerely.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov's body language shows he agrees Yukio's suggestion. "Right. If ya folk need anythin', jus' say so. We ain't gonna rush ya if ya can't handle it, but we can't be dawdlin' fer no reason," he adds.
GM Rednal |
Unless you want to leave the injured behind, your travel speed is 15 feet/round.
"I've... had worse." the woman said through gritted teeth. "Save magic for if it's really needed - I'm not such a baby that I can't handle a little pain if it means helping others." She seems like she's going to be rather stubborn on this point - but she also knows her limitations and isn't moving any faster than she feels is safe.
At the slow speed you're going, the long tunnel is quiet - and for quite a long time, there's nothing except the darkness up ahead and the darkness behind as you make your way through it. Finally, after nearly half an hour of steadily moving forward - broken up regularly by complaints from Horgus and a strange combination of advice and orders from the Riftwarden - there's a change in the tunnels and an opening in the wall pulses with an unpleasant green light. The tunnel continues on ahead, and looks like it finally leads into a new cavern up ahead...
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov raises an eyebrow curiously at the sound coming from an opening in the wall. "Ya folk hear that? Like a hammer on an anvil," he queries the others, gesturing for them to stop while he listens intently. "That's an awful nostalgic sound... an' not one I expected down 'ere. Stay sharp," he orders, gripping his weapon with both hands.
Julian Fey |
Assuming she has turned him down with her stubbornness. ;D
Julian frowns before sighing and shrugging his shoulders. "I didn't realize offering my aid meant questioning your resolve. My apologies for offending you Anevia." Completely nonplussed, he returns to guarding the rear. He remembered what his Captain would have done to a man with that type of answer... And it wasn't pleasant. However he wasn't about to drill her in the leg and she how she handles it, that would be... Counterproductive.
"Looks like it will have to wait for another time Youkia. Thanks for your offer though."

Later
Perception= If needed, guarding the rear.: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
The change in the tunnels was... Odd. He watched the green glow and pulse with clear concern. He was careful speaking to the Riftwarden, nodding unconsciously at Tarov's warning. Although he didn't know anythinf about hammering. "Aravashnial... there's a change in the tunnels and an opening in the wall pulses with an unpleasant green light. Know anything about it?"
K: Dungeoneering - Green Glow? (Maybe...): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
He was speaking somewhat mechanically, more sounding it off for himself as he thought of what it could possibly be...
Paige Sentine |
Paige slips her dagger back into its sheath and works the gears as they walk, reloading it for when it's needed. "I can heal for the moment," she says to Yukio. "I have some arcane talent, so we won't need to stop for it. Unless we encounter something worse than vermin, that is. But personally, I think we should be pushing hard to return to the surface and rejoin the fight." Assuming there's any fight left to join.
The green light they come up on makes her grip her sword tighter. "I don't hear anything, Stalwart. Tread lightly; there could be trickery going on."
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov nods, eyes peeled for anything.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
GM Rednal |
The green glow isn't anything recognizable - not yet, at least. However, glancing inwards, you do see a single sizable 20-foot-tall building remains in the center of this 30-foot-high cave, a bunkerlike structure with no windows and walls of worked stone blocks. A 10-foot-long carving of a hammer decorates the building's facade. The ruins of collapsed outbuildings stand to either side.
"Green? It may be a plant of some kind - some of them do glow here in the depths as a way of attracting animals that can help spread them, but don't approach too close to any source." the Riftwarden warned.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov sizes the building up, recognizing the symbol almost immediately. "A temple o' Torag? Down here?"
Yukio Shadowhare |
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26
Moving up to the entrance, Yukio takes a look around inside the chamber. "Interesting... A shrine to Torag here? Were there dwarves residing underneath the city at some point?" she asked Tarov.
Knowledge(Religion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Knowledge(Local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
As she pondered the temple and chamber, she continued looking about trying to spot the source of the green illumination.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Knowledge (History) regarding dwarves in this area: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
GM Rednal |
Kenabres is an almost completely-human city, with only the smallest part of the population drawn from other races. While dwarves have visited - selling quality weapons to support a crusade against demons is the kind of thing many dwarves are proud to be doing - there's no major enclave in the area, nor has Torag been one of the primary deities of the city. Dwarves haven't been known to dwell beneath the city, either - these tunnels would be larger, better, and more properly supported if the industrious folk had been involved.
Aravashinal, however, seemed to be wrong about the source of illumination - it seemed to be coming from within the temple, flickering out through a number of small cracks... though it was definitely a temple of Torag, and there was no doubt on that particular point.
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov frowns, relaying what he knows about dwarves living near Kenabres to the others. "Ain't no reason for this t' be here... maybe some humans built it? A few of 'em respect th' Father o' Creation jus' like me kin, but this is still right strange." Running a hand through his beard, all he can do is shrug. "I think we should look inside. That light don't sit well with me..."
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio nodded at the dwarf's words. As a priestess of Tsukiyo she was expected to know how to deal with spirits and to maintain the temple, and much effort was spent on properly keeping the grounds consecrated. Improper maintenance could anger ancestors or even allow evil spirits to taint the shrines on the grounds. Knowing for sure now that the shrine was definitely for Torag, the green light emanating from the building didn't sit well with her either. "I agree Stalwart, something isn't right. If I learned anything in my training it's that unkept or improperly kept shrines and temples tend to attract spirits... mischievous if not outright dangerous ones. When entering such a place one should be prepared to placate or pacify them."
Julian Fey |
The Riftwardens advice was useless this time, so Julian thought of a way forward just as Yukio and Tarov were deciding on advancing into the chamber. He picked out a couple of regents and readied a quick bomb mixtur just in case something happened.
"I will watch out for you from here then. Shout if you need help.". He was concerned about not advancing into the area with them but leaving the injured behind didn't sit well with him. Although he did know about cleaning shrines at least, it was a habit he had carried with him ever since he accepted Desna into his life. Cleaning the traveling shrines out of respect to others and the goddess was a great thing and a calming act for him...
He shook off the nostalgia, readied his bomb but didn't mix it yet lest it go inert when it was needed.
GM Rednal |
Horgus looked distinctly nervous at the mention of spirits - and Anevia simply stared at the holy symbol, an odd expression on her face as the Riftwarden groped about for a wall to steady himself against. "If you're going inside, don't do anything foolish." he said, recognizing that Tarov probably wasn't going to be deterred on this matter. The first rule of leadership: Never give an order you knew wouldn't be obeyed. "Our goal is to get out of here and help the city - you can always come back later, with enough allies, if it's too much to handle right now."
Julian Fey |
"Our goal is to survive, that fortified building is far better then sleeping in the dirt Riftwarden. Besides, once we escape from here I doubt we will come back." Julian was firm but kind, they didn't need to be deterred just yet. They needed a place to hunker down, heal Anevia and plan their next move. This place looked perfect for just that... "Besides if Tarov heard hammering... Maybe whoever is inside is friendly."
Tarov Boulderfist |
Tarov tosses a look back to the Riftwarden, nodding shallowly. "I ain't lookin' fer a fight. Jus' don' want t' leave somethin' unchecked if it might come up behin' us and make me regret not doin' so." The knight turns back towards the inside of the structure, pushing his way inside slowly, eyes searching for anything of note. "I can only hope yer right, Julian," he mutters to himself, gripping the chain of his weapon tightly.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Man, I can't see anything to today, apparently.
Paige Sentine |
Paige stares in surprise at the temple dedicated to Torag, so completely out of place. Still, as a girl she was taught to respect all the gods of good whose followers have a hand in the Crusades, and she bows her head in respect. "I agree with Stalwart. At best, this is merely a temple dedicated to Torag; we may take a moment to pray at it and be on our way. At worst? Something has forsaken this holy place, and it deserves to be purified." She looks around for anything peculiar about the structure or their surroundings.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
"Can you still hear the banging sound?" she asks the dwarf, ready to draw his mind away from what she suspects to possibly be an enchantment. If he does, she begins to sing a tune about Torag's victories over the forces of Rovagug. A pounding, hearty chant, percussed by her armoured hand tapping against the leather of her armour.
Countersong Performance Roll: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
If there is anything going on, I just countered the shit out of that song.
Julian Fey |
Since we can see the structure now, New Perception Roll~ 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
As the others advance he muttered, more to himself then anyone else. "Steady in the ranks...." I'll never lose anyone again... He was more nervous as he had a hard time seeing any details through this strange green mist...
Yukio Shadowhare |
Yukio fell in behind the dwarf, feeling it was essential to give him the honor of setting foot in his god's temple first. As he stepped in, she said a brief prayer to her own god. "王子的月亮,在黑暗中守護著我,雖然你不閃耀." With that she stepped in after Tarov slowly, showing reverence appropriate for what was once, and still might be holy ground.
"Prince of the Moon, in darkness watch over me, though you shine not."

Once they were settled he kept the regents for a bomb firmly in one hand and drew his Scimitar with the other. Unconsciously he spun the blade and tested its weight, he didn't know if he would need to fight harder then before or not. But, he would be at least ready if he had too.
