Yeah, but you might have the opportunity to learn it later. ^^

"Aye, I'll take a horse." Haddin said. He'd managed to walk this far - coughing all the while - but his stubborn pride clearly didn't extend to forcing himself to walk when another option was available. The method was workable, though, and soon all but one of the steeds had been directed back towards the city. (Fortunately, most of them were smart, well-trained animals - they knew what to do.)

Torrent, meanwhile, was clearly unapologetic for having not revealed the number of potions she had - after all, if others didn't know, it was much harder for them to be stolen or lost. That, and she seemed confident that any remaining pursuers couldn't easily duplicate such a thing - which meant going through the forest ought to protect you from any further chases.

Moving forward, though magic protects your skin against burns, you can still feel the intense, withering heat carried in terrible blasts from the trees, and you smell the acrid smoke as you enter and it envelops you, arms of black and orange embracing your party. The thick banks of smoke mean that you can’t often see more than an arm’s length in front of you, but the fierce, dry wind often blows these banks away. Powered by backdrafts and dramatic valley winds, the gusts snatch at loose pieces of clothing. During the lulls in the wind, as the massive lungs of the forest take breath, fingers of flame reach out from the smoldering undergrowth, pawing and caressing the hems of clothing and the ropes and backpacks, always threatening to grab hold and ignite an inescapable inferno. In front of you, the only thing that distinguishes the Elfroad from the surrounding territory is its relative lack of undergrowth, exposing the blackened char-rock where once the elves of Innenotdar carried their families.

Your eyes sting with tears, your nostrils burn, your hands draw back instinctively, as if touching a boiling pot. As if diving into a dragon’s fiery maw, you have entered the Fire Forest of Innenotdar.

According to several old maps Torrent consulted, the path along the Elfroad through Innenotdar is seventeen miles long, followed by about fifty more miles along a mountain road before reaching the northern foothills of Dassen. There's a lot of ash on the road, though, clearly marking where you've been.

A quarter-mile after entering the forest, you come across a trio of refugees, now smoldering piles of burnt flesh and blackened bones. Their remains are scattered, as if they had been picked over by scavengers.

Ridley stopped to say a prayer over the dead refugees—but, while doing so, also looked for any valuable possessions.

Umbriak also knelt, hoping to find useful information. It was doubtful in this smouldering hell, that there would be much of use to be found...but you never knew until you looked, and he'd like to know if it was the smoke and heat which had killed them, or something else.

"I wonder what's their story...", Farod mused, staying with Haddin and Krystin. Part of him wanted to bury the corpses, or at least properly arrange them and do them honors, but he knew they had no time for that.
Regardless, he heared enough tales of vengeful dead rising to attack indiscriminately to keep his bow ready(with blunt arrows)...just in case these blackened bones were that sort of dead.

As Ridley bent down to search one of the corpses, its hand rose up to seize his wrist in an iron grip as it twitched its head to look up at him... and a faint whisper came out of its mouth.

"Kill me... please..."

"Argggh!" Umbriak shrieked, leaping to his feet and grabbing his axe. "What by Angradd's cold forge happened to ye?"

"Polite corpses, requesting help to pass on...", carefully approaching, Farod adds:"Alas, it seems you are already dead. Mayhaps it's not killing you need to reach Pharasma's realm."

I do know "Drench"...should I try watering one of them?

"Hold, everyone. I need to know just what happened..." Ridley cautioned. Drawing his sword with one hand, he used the other to cast a Cure Light Wounds spell, under the assumption that it would heal a badly-injured victim but restore a dying one.

CLW: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

The healing takes effect - and helps him, rather than hurting him - but the heat of the area means he's still on fire. Putting that out might help, yes...

And I'll assume you do so, rather than dragging this out for every little thing. XD

With the flames put out, the man looks slightly better - though he's entirely hairless and his body is badly scarred. "The fire... it's everywhere..." he whispered hoarsely.

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

"Yes. You wandered into the fire forest. I'm surprised that you got this far, and sincerely sorry about your companions."

Ridley tried to calm the man down, and then tried to speak with the others separately. "How badly do we need the horse? Because I'd rather we see this man get out alive than our beast of burden."

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

Farod waves Ridley aside for a moment, whispering:"I am no expert on these matters, but do you even think he CAN make it? Even if we carry him he doesn't exactly look like it...", he muses... "now smoldering piles of burnt flesh and blackened bones." does sound like way beyond degree 3 burn victim...more like "half-cremated and they turned it off because he screamed". I'll not pick the horse over him, but if he dies half-way through in pain and agony, then we better not extend his suffering and help him, now. Also, I grew up with Orcs. They have an efficient mindset in such manners: The weakest link dies to make the chain stronger.

Cure spells can close actual wounds. He might have some ability damage, but otherwise should be healable (with heavy scars). And you might be part orc but I've got a grumpy angel in my head.

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

Just justifying my train of thought with my upbringing ;) - if you took no offense, all the better.

As for cure spells or healability: do we HAVE someone who can do an actual heal check. There's plenty of conditions where you can patch someone up good but they are still a goner. I figure organ failure is already underway with this fella...that he actually comes to now could be the pre-death "high" when the brain says "screw it" because the physical vessel is racing towards a dead-end at too high speed to brake...

In that case, you would need actual "regeneration" to revive dead organs, and we have no access to any magic that could help him at our level.

Farod adds, when Umbriak joins them: "Also don't forget that we already warded the horse with one of the potions...If we give him the other, it effectively halves the time we have to cross the forest, he won't have a second potion, and I doubt he could survive in the middle of the fire forest..."

At Ridley's comment on his companions, the man turned and looked at the other bodies there, as well as the ruined belongings that were now little more than abandoned charcoal. A horrified croak came out of his burned throat, and without warning, he lunged towards the dagger on Ridley's belt.

"Whoops." Umbriak moved to stop the man from gutting himself.

Oh, right. Hmm.

"Stop that!" Ridley reprimanded the man, in his sternest voice. Reaching around for assistance in his mind, he found none, and so went with a generic attempt at motivation. "Look at them, yes, and cry," he agreed, pointing at one of the bodies, "But, umm... what would they think if they knew you had a second chance to live, and squandered it?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30

Ooh... decent roll. "Do we really need our horse?" he asked the others. "Because we're far less than a day's ride from the entrance to the forest. If we give you a potion of fire resistance, and the horse, you can ride out the way you came. If my companions have a problem with that, I'll pay them for the horse myself the next time I come into some coin."

And he attempts to hand the man his keepsake, a small pewter chalice with "R.A." carved into it. "If you're not an arcane caster, you might be safe in Gate Pass. If you are, don't chance it—though either way, you might want to wait until the fighting settles down. But bring that to the church of Sarenrae in Gate Pass, tell them that Ridley Applewood sent you, and you'll have a meal and a bed for as long as you need it, as well as the small possessions I left behind."

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

"Hum. We're less than a quarter-mile from the entrance. Not meaning to sound cruel, but you think he needs one of the potions for the way there? Also, there's plenty of stuff in Haddin's house that we were unable to bring...he can resupply there, then be on his way. Dunno if he even needs the horse for that...more than others..., he looks at the coughing old man currently riding it a little bit away, before continuing,"...if he stays at Haddins place, then claims to have been assaulted by a crazed old fireslinging mage and a young woman on the road away from the fire forest, and just fled to this deserted house looking for help, the Ragesians would probably even help him."
He also makes no attempt to hide his disgust at the mans attempt for the dagger. Wether to attack them, or to end his own life, this was weakness beyond any kind of pity he could muster. He is not accusing or judging the man, simply disapproving of his choices on a personal level.

"You don't understand!" the man said, shaking. Just moving was clearly painful to him - but there were no tears, for any water evaporated as soon as it appeared. "I've already lost everything... everyone." his eyes flicked back to the char-black bodies lying on the ground. "If they're all dead, I'd rather follow them to the afterlife. It's better to seek Pharasma's mercy than live through this!"

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

"Pharasma does not look kindly on those who end their own existance when judging them. I may still grant your wish, if you take the time to tell me what happened." Looking around, Farod adds:"If it'll be a longer story, we may as well move back towards the entrance."

Looking at Umbriak and Ridley, he adds:"Not like we can babysit him if he intends to kill himself. Better to grant him a clean painless death, after we learned enough to make an informed decision"

Also, I may clearly be biased. The last suicidal person I saved in a Rednal game triggered a TPK when we were attacked by fire-based skeletons.

"And I'd prefer he take the time to think about such a serious and irreversible decision, not jump to it as an easy escape in the height of his grief."

Ahahah oh noooo

And we're in a fire forest...

While the other dealt with the suicidal one, Umbriak moved to it's fellows, to see if they were dead-dead or only horribly-burned-but-not-quite-dead-dead. He was amazed that the man had survived those ones -although Umbriak knew he had some link to fire, he also knew that he couldn't have survive this.

On the bright side, he's not a skeleton. An-

*Pauses*

Yidhra says "On the other hand, he might be suicidal enough to deliberately try and trigger one of those. And you won't know for sure unless you risk it. Wheeeee!". ...Take that as you will.

The other bodied Umbriak examined were heavily charred corpses, often burnt away down to the bone - they didn't move, but without some kind of serious divination (or immensely good knowledge of anatomy (through a Heal check)), it wouldn't be easy to figure out whether or not they were dead-dead. It was, however, quite easy to see that one of the bodies was vaguely feminine, while the other was simply small.

The man - eventually naming himself as Durval - did provide a few more details on what had happened. He was a student at Gabal's school who had attempted to flee with his family when Ragesia's army marched in... but his meager magics hadn't been enough to resist the fires of the forest. He'd expected to be dead now, and didn't even know why he was still alive.

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

Martha was not a skeleton. Didn't stop her from siding with them and stabbing one of the still standing members of the party to dying.

"I'd assume your meager magics failed, but not quite enough to let you die.", Farod is deep in thought looking over at Haddin and Krystin.
"Don't mention it to the old man. He'll make you feel more suicidal, if that' a thing. Or murderous."
Keeping the man's gaze away from his probably-dead family, Farod shoots a questioning glance at Umbriak, who was taking a look at the bodies.(also you seem to be the only one with heal)

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

"You're a spellcaster?" Ridley asked. And to the old man, "How hard would it be to teach the spell you used to make those potions, or to transcribe a scroll or two?"

And he cast cure light wounds on each of the other skeletons, just to check for good measure. Oracles get a lot of spells...

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

Wasn't it Torrent who provided the potions?

Male (Ye may check, I dinnae mind) Dwarf Barbarian / Warpriest-Wizard Gestalt 5| HP: 70/70 | AC: 19 / T: 11 / FF: 16 |(+2 vs magic and poison) Fort: +7, Ref: +5, Will: +9(11) | CMB: +9, CMD: 20 | Init: +1, Perception: +10 | DR 2/- | Fire Resistance 1

Umbriak murmured a prayer at the sight of the small corpse. It might be a Gnome or Halfling, and he hoped it was...because the other option wasn't pleasant.

He attempted to check to be absolutely sure they had passed. He'd been to certain that this Durval had been burned to death already.

Heal: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

Torrent provided the potions, yeah. As for Martha... *Snickers* In fairness, it wasn't her fault. She didn't really have a choice in the matter.

Haddin just blinked at Ridley. "All this heat made you daft?" he asked as Ridley sent a surge of healing magic into the bodies. They didn't move - though Umbriak was unable to learn anything else about them.

"I bought them from a shop a few weeks ago." Torrent said. "Back when we first got word of the Ragesian army heading this way. It seemed... prudent... to be prepared."

"So nae more of them when they're gone," Umbriak noted calmly. "And nae way to cast for more. The Gods dinnae make life easy, but I cannae imagine this another way." He glanced at the others, seeing how they weighed the choices before them.

"Well. Hmm. We've got no way to get another traveler through the forest with us, though just enough potion to get him out the way he came. I guess there's no way we can see what he does after that."

Farod has little more to add to his earlier statements, standing by what he said.
It was no good trying to cut the time they had in half by giving the guy one potion, and ending up with one person lacking a second one.

"Haddin's house is less than a mile from here. I say we drop you off there, I'll even take some time to help you bury your family. What you decide to do from there is none of my business. Personally, I would try hard to try and find a way to get them raised, or take revenge against the Ragesians who caused my misfortune in the first place. If you wish to die without trying either, that's your cup of tea. Both of these things, you could accomplish by not valuing your own life any more. If you wish to give in to the pain and take the weaklings exit, I won't stop you. But not before you man up and properly bury them.", he suggests.

If we work together, 2 graves should be quickly done, more so if one is small. One person can look him over and he can contemplate his future fate and decisions with the knowledge of Ragesians arriving soon. I don't think taking him with us is a very valid option, if we can't magically produce one extra potion or learn the spell. Expecting us to learn the spell during those next 48 hours would be very meta, so not a big fan of taking that chance.

Let me know what you decide to do. ^^ ...Incidentally, you CAN learn the spell the next time you level, now that you're aware of it. It's a Level 1 Cleric/Oracle, Druid, Paladin, Ranger, and Sorcerer/Wizard spell.

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

Ridley's going to make sure the guy doesn't get a weapon... but ultimately we don't really have a way to keep an eye on him beyond leaving the forest, so he's going to have to let him go soon.

HP: 10/10 | AC: 12 / T: 10 / FF: 10 | Fort: +2, Ref: +4, Will: +0 | CMB: 2, CMD: 14 | Init: +4, Perception: +5(+1 versus Traps) Low-light Vision

Aye, but assuming we WILL get to level in the next 24 hours, before the potion runs out, because of some challenge to be overcome in the fire forest, would be meta. "Hey, gamble your life on the chance that we run into enough trouble in the next 16 hours that we feel capable of learning the spell, resting and preparing it in time before you die a cruelsome death as human torch" would not seem very appealing to me.

Up to Ridley and Umbriak, I spoke my mind(and would stick with my suggestion if nobody comes up with something better). If we had 2 potions for him, I would even be up for babysitting him, even if we are ultimately unable to prevent him from doing something stupid. With only 1, I don't think bringing him along would be a great idea.

The ONLY other option would be to give him the potion AND the horse, and send him on his way by himself, but thats a gamble with a suicidal guy.

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

Could we kill the horse and feed him its blood? :p. For real, though, he'll probably kill himself once he gets out of sight, so it doesn't matter too much whether we give him the horse. But Ridley would've been in trouble if he didn't try.

I guess it's a case of try and keep him alive, and if he offs himself...well, we tried.

Umbriak looked at Torrent and the others. "Does this thrice cursed land have any safe points? Villages or sanctuaries that he can be left? I cannae imagine anyone livin' here...but I couldnae believe people worked beneath the sun, once upon a day."

Let me put it this way - you have no idea if the fire forest is the entire mission for this module, or just the first section and you're expected to do other things before you level. XD And I, of course, am not telling.

Torrent thought for a moment, then shook her head. "I've never heard of a village in here. Mind you, I'm not saying it's impossible, but it would be a very strange place indeed to be able to survive this."

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

"Well, I don't think we can babysit. But we've done what we can—and I won't have this man die while in my sight. So I guess maybe it's time to start moving again."

Umbriak nodded, and prepared to head out. He still didn't feel right, that the man had even survived, but with nothing left to be done...

I have nothing to add here. I made my position abundantly clear. Up to Umbriak and Ridley if we drop him off back at the entrance, or waste our horse on him to give him a theoretical chance to make it through, IF he even wants that. If we find him swinging from a fiery tree hanging from the leather parts of the saddle a couple miles down, having used the horse as a suicide platform, I won't be happy...nor Haddin.

Which direction do you want to move - in or out?

Ridley was planning for us to continue on, and leave the man behind but with a path to get out. We can't babysit him all day, etc, but it didn't feel right at all to let him die.

As long as we keep moving on, Umbriak doesn't mind. We don't have the time on our potions to waste running him back, sadly. I don't wanna see what happens when we run out...

Well, it's only been a quarter-mile into the forest, so I dare say we could quickly return him to Haddin's house(which was just an Ash Field away). I don't think it would seriously eat into our time and if he is unable to walk with his injurys, it may be the nice thing to do to quickly use the horse to transport him, but either is fine with me.

Halfling URogue 3 / Oracle 3 | HP: 33/33 | AC: 19 / T: 14 / FF: 16 | Fort: +5, Ref: +8, Will: +7/+9 | M. Touch: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +4, CMD: 13 | Init: +5, Perception: +10 |

Okay, let's do that, then.

Given the extent of his injuries - which were still quite serious, because the healing he'd received was far from enough to totally right him - you were able to let him ride out of the forest. Haddin complained the entire time, of course, while his daughter was awkwardly silent. Torrent frowned, but didn't actually object, and a certain degree of tension seemed to fall from the man as you left the forest proper. He was still in a rough place, but... getting out of the forest had removed at least a bit of a burden, and he no longer seemed suicidal.

*Jots down your success at this for later*

Turning around, you began to pick up the pace and make up for lost time. Two miles into the forest, you hear some chittering and swooping overhead, and-

-Umbriak managed to duck to the side as a small fire mephit plummeted downwards, shrieking in fear as a giant flaming bat descended from above. Without hesitation, the mephit ducked behind Umbriak, trying to use him as a shield against the flying beast. "Gaaaaaah, helpmehelpmehelpme!" it cried.

Ridley drew his sword and backed away from Umbriak, preparing to flank the flying creature if it descended into melee range.

I've used a lot of spells today, probably not worth testing out glitterdust...

"What? Huh?" Umbriak span around reaching for his axe, then span back as the flying creature seemed the bigger risk. "Why are wee flying things flappin' about me?"

Note: While it may not have any kind of impact, I would also take 5-10 minutes to place the 2 bodies of his wife and child a bit off to the side, properly laid out next to each other...rather than let them lay picked over by scavengers next to the road.

Farod readies his bow, gently letting his other hand trace it's outline as he muttered more orcish, before responding to Umbriak: "I'd say your beard provides better nesting material than Ridley's or my facial hair, but I suppose this one's not here because of that..."
Move action to draw weapon, standard to cast Gravity Bow

The flaming bat spread its wings wider as it landed on a nearby branch and shrieked loudly, clearly trying to intimidate you as the fires of its wings burned brighter. The mephit, squeaking, maneuvered around Umbriak to stay between the sturdy dwarf and the aggressive beast.
