Right, but Cavalier/Arcanist will suffer from MAD, and luckily that template increases the stats I need most (Dex, Int, and Cha) the penalties will hurt for sure, but it allows me to have my stats be STR: 14 DEX: 16 CON: 12 INT: 17 WIS: 8 CHA: 16 as a 25 pt build, using the human bonus to offset the -2 str. Plus it gives quickdraw and increases my melee damage, I like it.
Seranov |
So I just got out of the shower (where I do some of my best brainstorming!) and the concept that came to mind is that my Half-orc (Resol Born-in-Steel) will be a favored disciple of Gorum. His first level will be Bloodrager (Primalist/Steelblood) / Giant template, and after that he will be Bloodrager (Primalist/Steelblood) / Oracle of Battle (Dual-cursed). I'll fluff that change as Gorum looking down on him and saying, "That was too easy, my child. I'll give you a handicap, to make it more interesting," and slap him with a pair of curses (Probably Lame and one other. Deaf? Tongues? I'll think about it.).
Rough outline on stats would be:
20 Str (16 + 4 from template (10 points))
10 Dex (12 - 2 from template (2 points))
16 Con (12 + 4 from template (2 points))
12 Int (12 (2 points))
12 Wis (12 (2 points))
15 Cha (15 (7 points))
Again, I'm only going to do this if you're down with it. I just thought that a huge, raging spellcaster might be super neat.
Seranov |
@squeezing: I'm aware. :)
Deaf is actually a lot less terrible than I expected it would be, because the majority of the penalty is not being able to make hearing based Perception checks (admittedly this is the huge bit) and a Initiative penalty.
If you mean roleplaying-wise, there's nothing stopping Resol from being a capable lip-reader. I work with a woman who is almost completely deaf and she gets along just fine. :D
Additionally: Can I consider this the greenlight to get to work on his background and such? I don't want to go nuts before you 100% it. I think he has a lot of potential to be a really interesting and fun character, but outside of games like this, he would probably never be given a second look.
Locke, the Exiled |
Alright... here's my young gladiatorial sorcerer/bard looking to start a new life.
Jiren trudged along the dusty road to Sandpoint, her blue hair fluttering in the wind. Her heavy, practical, clothes shielded her from the worst of it, and anyways... she liked the wind.
Sandpoint rose up from the horizon, accompanied by the distant cries of gulls and the invigorating scent of seawater. A small feather suddenly drifted down to Jiren, alighting on her nose. With a small smile, she remembered one of her mother's old poems:
Hope is the thing with feathers,
That perches in the soul.
And sings the tune without words,
And never stops at all.
Clutching her small amulet with a cord of old leather and hung with various baubles of her old life, Jiren resolutely kept on trekking towards the town-towards a new beginning.
***
Okay, so I'm kinda going against the rules here and doing a build that stacks with itself, however, I'm also planning on using my bard slots for support spells and my sorcerer levels for blasting spells. Plus, as well as dweomercraft helping me, it also helps spellcasting allies-such as Mr. Giant Oracle there.
Xentik |
Rednal: What adjustments would be needed for a Young Animal Lord acceptable? (Animal type would be Elk)
Seranov |
Alright, I'll stick with Lame and Tongues, then. Much easier to overcome, and having Resol turn into a Abyssal-speaking hatemachine might be fun. :D
My only real problem, so far, is that I have no damn clue what he'd weight. Enlarge Person says it multiplies their height by 2 (fine) but their weight by 8! That'd make an average 290 lbs. Half-orc weigh over a ton! I'm going with ~1100 pounds as a more reasonable number.
Also, this is pretty much what I'm going to imagine Resol to look like: link.
Zova Lex |
Zova looks around at all the other people around her in the PC waiting room, trying her best not to look like a target for the more... magically inclined. She institutionally checks for the rapier by her side and breaths a sigh of relief. "Giants and mutants and mages... Sandpoint hasn't been this rowdy since the Late Unpleasentness..."
Seranov |
Rough outline on stats would be:
20 Str (16 + 4 from template (10 points))
10 Dex (12 - 2 from template (2 points))
16 Con (12 + 4 from template (2 points))
12 Int (12 (2 points))
12 Wis (12 (2 points))
15 Cha (15 (7 points))
Just realized I forgot to add my +2 racial bonus to this, so I'll throw that into Wisdom to keep Rezol from getting too crazy.
Working on the crunch right now, still brainstorming fluff. :)

Would it be possible to place the PAetherurgist Archetype for Oracles into consideration?
Gobo Horde |
Hey! Looks very interesting ^_^
Pity as i really liked the look of that giant half-giant :(
Well my idea is to build up Smaug, Phrophet of the DRAGON. a human vanilla summoner with an eidolon build to resemble a red dragon as much as possible.
Smaug will have a focus on charasmatic things, being the party face and intimidating foes.
Then add on Rogue (Thug) onto it and he will have lots of skills (and importiantly, class skills) and can frighten those around him when he gives his firey warning about your impending doom...
At lvl 2 he will take obsuficate story for some hijinks :)
Roles in a nutshel:
Smaug: Party face, minor debuffs, frightining foes, lots of Knowlede skills, lots of skills, summons, 2nd tier arcane magic, somewhat durable.
Igneel (dragon eidolon): Intimidate, durability, melee damage, can carry stuff.
Igneel will only be out a part of the time, i can create more suspense as Smaug talks to this creature that is only out a smaller portion of the time. And i am NOT getting pounce :( Dragons dont pounce...
Well thats the basic jist of him, i got a lot to do to flesh him out still :)
He is versitile, being able to fufill quite a few roles, at least adaquately, which is importiant if there are only 3 of us :)

Note that I have played Rise of the Runelords before but only a few days past the church scene...
Alright attempt number 2, using the Ley line magic described in Deep Magic for this. Can I use the Geomancer archetype? Won't draw up stats unless backstory is approved, will be going for a wizard/rogue (or investigator) combo.
Once Jacen Stone was a promising apprentice... Once being the key word, he made it to the Academae despite his status as a half chelexian/half varisian bastard. Then it fell apart, the instructors had not taken him because they thought he had promise. They took him in to show that a "half breed" could never become a graduate of the Academae.
Even more so that other students they crushed him under the weight of books, difficult tests and of course used his half breed status to foment hatred against him among the student body. Jacen Stone despite this kept on trying until they threw him out, literally as it was.
Thrown onto the street Jacen Stone was beaten nearly to death, yet this beating did not quite kill him... Indeed it propelled him onto greater things, hatred has a tendency to make men powerful far ahead of their time...
Jacen Stone escaped Korvosa, battered but still very much determined to succeed. He traveled to the city of monuments where he learned Thassilion and secrets of the ancients, unlike others he didn't focus on Thassilion Sin Magic: Instead he focused on the ancient mysteries of Ley Lines.
Unknown to most the ancients practiced more then just rune magic, in the height of her empire Thassilion was intersected by numerous "Ley Lines". Ley Lines are powerful creation that exist across Golorian but are especially prevalent in Varisia, the Runelords were powerful enough in fact to modify and in some cases create ley lines.
As a result a power that even the elven ancients scarcely knew blossomed in Thassilion, a power that could make even an apprentice's spells as mighty as an archmage.
Jacen tapped into this power and soon enough he was channeling potent magics, yet his experimentation was not without price. One day he channeled a particularly powerful but unstable ley line, the resulting backlash left him unconscious for three days. When he woke up he found that the backlash had imprinted runic scars into his face, yet despite the pain and agony of this experiment it advanced Jacen's studies tenfold...
For the backlash had not just knocked him unconscious, it had stained his very soul with ley line magic and in doing so gave him impossible insights into the power of ley lines.
Jacen's journey has brought him to Sandpoint, he has come here not to partake in the festival but to investigate Old Light: Jacen believes that Old Light is nothing less then a massive "crossroads" in the ley line network...
Jacen is perhaps one of the most brilliant minds in his generation, his intellect is vast and his capacity to harness magic unbelievable. Yet he was scorned by the so called "masters" of magic in Korvosa and this colors his thinking. To Jacen it is not merely enough to have power, this power must be put to use.
Jacen believes that in magic "might makes right", he desires to take his place in history as a feared archmage: A god among men. To do this Jacen knows that he must accomplish the seemingly impossible, he must cast the magics that would break the sanity of another mage...
Jacen's hatred fuels his recklessness, Jacen is not a conservative spell pincher hoarding his spells in some forsaken tower: He is an evoker who utilizes the full and brutal might of his spells to decimate all who would oppose him.
Yet Jacen is not evil, he is a man guided by pure ambition not by sadism...
GM your thoughts?
The Little King |
I have an idea for a female half-elf chirurgeon/armored hulk.
Tamina was training to be her tribe's medicinewoman. Her education was stopped short when an army of raiders from cheliax were met in her tribe's forest by the Mercenary League outpost in Mecridi. The raiders wiped out her tribe, Tamina surviving only thanks to the armor of a fallen Mecridite.
Tamina escaped to Mecridi where she learned how to use such armor more effectively while simultaneously keeping to the teachings of her mentor to learn the art of healing by alchemy. She did much of her learning and training in the field as these skirmishes lasted a long while.
Once they had been brought to a decisive end, and Tamina's usefulness as an aid in battle had run its course, the people of Mecridi began to pay more attention to her lack of faith in the Prophecies of Kalistrade. Before long it became apparent that she was no longer welcome, and she couldn't honestly say the feeling wasn't mutual. So she packed up what little she had and left to find a new home.
This journey brings her to Sandpoint, as she thinks with so many different kinds of people about, she'll fit in nicely and if not: she'll try her hand on another land via the port.
Zova Lex |
Well, there are a few new things in this, but I like the characterization she's getting ^_^
Zova Lex was still a rookie back then; just a wide eyed kid who had been taken under Sheriff Hemlock’s wing as a new guard and investigator. She was happily married with a local store owner who thankfully was able to stay at home with their two year old son, Andrei. Those were happy times. The reality of the world had not yet sunk in for Zova, nor most of Sandpoint for that matter. It was a safe little place, free of care, where the people could live out their lives in relative peace.
That all changed with the Chopper’s first victim. Sandpoint was relatively devoid of violent crime so it came as a surprise to everyone, especially the City Watch. Trusting in the skills of his favored rookie, Sheriff Hemlock sent Zova to investigate, supervising her in every step of the process. At some point, she interviewed an artisan named Jervis Stoot about what he saw... and to this day the fact that she let the killer lie to her face still haunts her. She found that he was a bit eccentric... but she could never have guessed that he was the killer.
There was not enough evidence to go on, and not even the local inquisitors had a lead. Then the next body appeared. And another. And another. Fear ruled the streets of Sandpoint, for a carnage of this scale had never even been imagined. One night, an entire family had been murdered, and the streets literally ran red with blood.
And that was the night she could have stopped him. The sick bastard had been hiding, watching as the people screamed and panicked at the sight of the bodies on the street. Zova had only just seen him out of the corner of her eye. Alerting Hemlock to the masked man’s presence, the two tried to quietly subdue him. At that moment, The Chopper decided to run. Hemlock and Zova chased the scoundrel across the city streets, running their damndest in an attempt to catch him. In a burst of desperate speed, Zova reached out and attempted a grab at his cloak... only to miss, stumbling, and tripping Hemlock in the process.
The Sheriff always said that he never held any hard feelings against her for letting the killer go free. She had been the one to spot him in the first place, and that was enough to earn his respect. The people of Sandpoint didn’t see it that way. In the weeks that followed, as the body count rose, Zova found herself on the receiving end of tossed rocks, vicious verbal lashings and even death threats.
But nothing could be so bad as to what happened next. Walking home one night, she noticed that her door was opened. When she walked inside, everything that she held dear in life was lying on the floor, lifeless. Her family was one of the last victims of The Chopper.
She was there when Hemlock put the pieces together. She was there when he tried to escape for a second time and though the official reports say differently, she was the one to strike him down. The city, however, needed a hero and she understood this, so pleased with Hemlock to take the credit. The city would not celebrate the person who let the killings go on for so long.
Five years since that day and now there are rumors of The Chopper’s ghost wandering Sandpoint. Still a city guard, remarried and with a nearing two years old, Zova asked for some personal time off to investigate this claim. If there was anyone who most deserved to stay within the grave, it was that killer. There was no way she would allow the circumstances to be any different. There was no way he would leave her with nothing again.
As she grew up, Zova always found she had a sense of justice, wanting the law to rule out over all. Sick of being vooped up in her father's shop all day, she quickly joined the city guard the minute she became of age (this is, of course, before her time as an investigator with Sheriff Hemlock) and began training with the sword as well. she found the rapier to be her natural calling.
These years were the easy one's in Zova's life. Her father retired comfortably and now lives with her mother peacefully and quietly on the other side of town, old aged. but happy people. Even to this day, they are there, and Zova sometimes goes there on holidays to get her mind off work...

@Buzzgob: Dying... from... so... many... references!
Anyways, I supposed I introduced myself slightly abruptly, so I'm going to explain myself and Jiren's role in the party.
As a sorcerer with a specialization in Shocking Grasp, she's primarily a damage dealer on her Sorcerer side, able to dish out huge amounts of damage from traits, feats, and bardic performances. At the end of it, she's going to be doing 4d6+4 points of damage average with her Shocking Grasp, with a +3 CL from Gifted Adept, Dweomercraft, and Outlander (Lore Seeker). (Will also be changing her backstory up, wrote up that last one in the last fifteen minutes of class.)
On her bard side, however, Jiren is a competent bard-y character-a good bit of skill, mainly a diplomancer kind of character, and using Dweomercraft to boost other spellcaster's spells-and using her bard spell slots for support spells.
I know I probably don't have a chance, but I would love to get in on this, since I have had this character brewing in my head for a while now.
Anyways, about me: I'm an aspiring writer, and I have no real gaming group-which is kinda good, since that means I'm restricted to the more of role-play, less roll-play style of PbPs. I've never played RotRL before (obviously), so no "spoilers!*" for me.
*say in Professor River Song's voice.
Once I'm done working out my backstory and somesuch with Rednal, I'm kind of antsy for some roleplaying with my naive bardic sorcerer-taking out the gladiator part of her backstory, if that wasn't obvious.
Alright, so, Rednal, um, well, I have a reeeeeallllly long backstory, so I'm typing it up in Google Docs format. It's not like she has done a bunch of crazy things that shouldn't be in a first-level character's resume-I realized that with the gladiator backstory-but I like describing the details a bunch, so I'm writing in in more of a traditional, novel-like short story format. Hope you're okay with that (=^-^=)!
Pace the Joyful |
Question: As the tactician's Strategic Training feature is inferior to the bard's skill list and skill points, with this being gestalt, would you rule that I get the 1st level Bonus Feat instead?
Pace the Joyful |
Pace is ready for review. I think I hit everything needed.
As to my availability/readiness, I should be good posting at least once per day Tuesday through Saturday. Sunday and Monday are my weekends, and that's where things get odd. But I'll still try for once a day then :)
@Lady Ladile: You could always try the other way around: Write a story, then make the character. Or you could use the random generators that are rife on the internet :)
Udaya Udas |
Hey Red,
This is Straehan from your other gestalt game. Well, I tried to resist, I really did, but I'm going throw a character in the ring for this game. If you'd rather not have repeat players just say so. It's not a problem and I can respect that choice. However, if you're willing to consider one of your current players... read on.
UU's Personal Ad
Fish-out-of-water female Aasimar Paladin of Sarenrae / Oracle of Life (why clutter things up with variant archetypes) seeks mayhem, fun, and opportunities for love and ass-kickery in cloud-besotted Sandpoint!
UU is a firecracker. She is brassy, irreverent, playful, unpretentious, and mercurial. When she walks into a bar, sailors have been known to run out. While capable of being diplomatic, UU prefers 'straight talk' and has moments of 'creative' intimidation. She is a maverick and doesn't fit the typical Paladin mold. She isn't high-minded, doesn't wear shiny armor, and isn't a role-model for anything but relentless boot-to-ass action.
In her early teens, her celestial bloodline became apparent and couldn't be hidden. Her father quickly shipped her off to the Church of Sarenrae in Absalom rather than face questions of her 'scandalous' heritage. Life in the capital was difficult. As a pretty girl, she drew attention. As an 'out-of-town' girl, and an assertive one at that, she was teased and picked on. After she started sending boys home with black eyes, (Trait: Bully) the other kids decided it was best to just leave the mercurial girl alone. She found the arrangement acceptable, if a bit lonely. Boredom and isolation wore on her.
Though she railed against it, her celestial bloodline called to her and eventually forced her to accept a purpose... hunting down evil in Sarenrae's name. Even as a Paladin, she is somewhat iconoclastic and her mentors within the church have attempted to discipline her to no avail. Udaya has always walked the ragged edge of censure or being defrocked. Trying to polish off her rough edges (and punish her), they assigned UU to various 'scut-work' assignments for a year. UU was unchanged. Desperate to get the frustrating woman out of their hair if they couldn't make her toe the line, they ordered UU to head North on an important mission. They have sent her to 'watch over and protect' a 'strategic town' from the constant threat of 'legendary monsters'. (Trait: Monster Hunter) UU liked the idea of defeating beasts of legendary evil... It was only weeks later after arriving in Sandpoint that she realised the real purpose of her 'mission'. She has been exiled to the little village of Sandpoint in the god-forsaken hinterlands of clammy (relatively speaking) Varisia on a Snipe Hunt for some urban legends - Murdermaw and the Sandpoint Devil.
UU has been marooned in the backwater village for about six months and is going slowly and irretrievably insane. The only thing that makes the job remotely bearable is the periodic goblin or wolf attack, some of the more colorful locals, and the hope that some noteworthy evil might accidentally stumble into town.

Oh, and yes I can post one or more times daily with little effort and I'm looking for a long-term campaign - staying power isn't a problem.
JonGarrett |
*Sigh* Two more questions, I'm afraid.
First, is the Bolt Ace considered proficient in all Crossbows? I'd like to grab a Repeater, simply because I think they're cool, but don't really want to grab the Exotic Weapon feat to use it.
And secondly, would you allow the Trap Finder trait? I've the dex and points to play skill monkey, but I'm aware that the trait is unusually powerful, and a campaign trait for another campaign. Still, figured I'd ask and see if I could be a crossbowman/healer/buffer/skill monkey.
Jonahkan |
Hi,
I’m thinking of a - and I can’t believe I’m about to type, this, but, hey, there are some pretty unbelievable things in this thread already, so, here goes -
Young Half-Dragon Aasimar Cleric of Apsu.
Whew. The concept being a part-human descendant of celestial dragons, i.e, a descendant of one of Apsu’s angel-dragons. If I’ve understood correctly, that would be at first level (cleric 1/young half-dragon 1), and then at second level (cleric 2/half-dragon 1/something 1). That ‘something’ would either be a words-of-power sorcerer (rather, draconic roars-of-power sorcerer) or a ranger, faithfully hunting down the chosen enemies of their god.
I’m completely willing to abandon parts of this idea, if it’s too much. Go straightforward ranger, or wizard, instead of the weird words-of-power thing. Human rather than aasimar - just because they believe that’s their ancestry doesn’t make it true. Or tone down the half-dragon template. Or… well, if I abandoned the template entirely I’d probably change things up and worship a different god.
Or maybe this campaign doesn’t suit a character with such an explicitly draconic link, and I should do something else! I think this character would have to be visiting Sandpoint to look in on the consecration of the new cathedral, and also to investigate rumours of various monstrous beasts and disquiet spirits… abominations in need of exterminating, or souls in need of a cleric’s kindly touch to move on.
Um, thoughts?
Thanks!
GM Rednal |
@Jon: Survey says... no, Bolt Aces are not naturally proficient in Exotic Ranged Weapons like repeating crossbows. General trait rules are "only one from each section", which includes campaign traits.
@Jonahkan: Aasimar are an accepted race, so there's no issues there. Half Dragon + Young is an acceptable combination, and I encourage checking out Deep Magic's section on Words of Power if you haven't already done so. That said, have confidence in yourself and your ideas! ^^ Can't guarantee I'll pick you, of course - I'm only judging by the final submissions - but you shouldn't worry too much.
