Rixa focuses her eyes on the patch of ground twenty feet in front of her, where it looks like the bulk of the ghouls will be charging through. She furrows her brow, and the ground collapses in on itself, becoming unsteady and ready to swallow up any who set foot in it.

Casting lightning sand. It makes a 5-foot radius area (10-foot square) difficult terrain, and the ghouls need to make a DC 15 reflex save or be entangled.

Shalluk chose to call upon his Mother's spirit to the field, as the additional shots and another ally would be vital.

The spirit formed next to the crossbowman, frowning at the undead and firing a spectral bolt of force.

A moment to adjust to the change, Zelani saw as Rixa prepared the ground before them, so the druid prepared the ground behind. With her tattoos lighting up and a quiet song, she created a barrier to protect their backs and funnel the ghouls towards Rixa's prepared ground. Just keeping them off her and the other's backs would hopefully do some good as she watched to see what the ghouls would do to see if focusing on keeping the barrier up or sending destructive blasts would be more helpful...

Barrier: Break DC of 17, HP 8 which can be renewed at the start of the round through maintaining concentration if not broken


*Pauses, then doublechecks* Oh, that spell IS from an accepted sourcebook. XD Right-o, carry on!

As Rixa cast her spell, the undead split to go around it - but the added distance meant they weren't quite able to close in on you, and Zelani's ward cut them off before they could go any further. The bolt from Shalluk's minion hit one dead-on - although, alas, it didn't drop it - and the ghouls began pounding on the barrier.

Whiiiich is enough to shatter it, but that ends their turn. XD

Shalluk decided to use the additional time to bury several crossbow bolts in the oncoming monsters.

Not that the shots were good, as the crossbowman trembled at the sight of the shambling horde. He took a deep breath to steady himself.

The spectral attacker fired again at the one it had hit before, hoping to drop and destroy it.

I know. It's an awesome spell. :D I couldn't really believe it when I first saw it either.

Rixa shifts her focus to another patch of ground beneath some of the closer ghouls, hoping to further delay the horde.

Aiming another lightning sand to below/slightly in front of the closest ghouls- the ones it catches in its area need to make a DC 15 reflex or become entangled.

Zelani was glad the barrier had worked, briefly, to give them breathing room. Not seeing time or benefit of another barrier yet, the druid sent a destructive blast to whoever she spotted closest to them...

Somewhat surprisingly, neither of the ghouls Rixa sent her spell towards were entangled by the sudden change of ground... although since neither of them was a truly agile entity, their dodge fell more under the category of luck than skill. Shalluk, alas, was unable to strike any of the ghould, but his companion did manage to destroy the one it had previously injured, and Zelani followed up by damaging another. That left five ghouls - one badly hurt - and they carefully marched across the terrain before lashing out at you.

Even more surprisingly, the two ghouls who'd managed to endure the quicksand moved in tandem to bite Rixa and Shalluk, and succeeded with such an eerie degree of symmetry that one had to wonder if there was something else behind their movements... although only Shalluk was unable to avoid the paralyzing venom the ghouls had.

Shalluk froze, his eyes panicked as they darted around, looking for an escape from the venom.

Mother, however, was not frozen. The spectral crossbow swiveled to the Ghould that had struck Shalluk with unerring speed before firing.

I currently have mirror image up. Sorry, forgot to put it in my status bar. Also, DR 5 for the win! Quick question, though: I forgot I had a wand of shield in my possession. Would it be possible to retcon her buffing with it pre-battle? My AC is just a touch low for comfort.

Rixa shrugs off the harmless bite, her celestial flesh, resilient to the forces of evil already, heals the few marks the undead left on her in seconds. She turns, her falchion shearing into its deathly flesh with all the force she can muster, chopping into both ghouls with extreme and deadly power.

Zelani sent off another destructive blast to the closet ghouls...

...and then tried to take a deep breath as she felt the nerves of the battle getting to her, shifting towards Shalluk as the druid unsurely checks on him.


I generally don't allow retcons for things you didn't use - or forgot to mention you had up, for that matter. PbP is slow, and it's easy to forget things - so knowing you could lose out if you aren't on-the-ball serves as a kind of encouragement to make things clear and easy to resolve. A good way of doing things is (as you had there, Rixa) simply putting your active effects up in OOC text at the end of each of your posts, including their remaining duration and current strength. If you copy it over each time, you're much less likely to forget it and lose out on the benefits of something you wanted to have.

The exception to the above is rerolls, which I'm pretty lenient about because it's hard to use them in PbP. I mean, imagine me stopping to ask after every roll whether you wanted to use something because normally you have to decide 'before the outcome is revealed'. XD; We'd get nowhere.

Also, you should probably add your reach to the end of your quick reference bar.

Rixa managed to down one of the ghouls as it approached, while Mother took down the one that had been threatening Shalluk. A moment later, Rixa slashed through two more of the ghouls, and suddenly the only one left was the one Zelani had missed.

Shalluk sighed out a breath of relief as his Mother faded away. "Thank you," he said, nodding to Rixa. "I think your powers carried that for us."

Looking around, he nodded to the farmhouse. "Unless anyone else has an idea, we should probably make sure that isn't a...nest of these creatures, where the original source is."

She looked around before walking towards the farmhouse.

Okay, sorry/okay. It looks like it didn't really impact too much anyway. I'll estimate it's been about a minute for buff durations.

Rixa nods to Shalluk, six giant figures all doing the exact same motion "It's my pleasure. However, might I ask that we keep moving? My spells will only last for another..." she does some quick estimations, ...Three minutes before I need to re-cast them. Might I suggest a light jog, if everyone can manage that?"

Rixa scans the areas for evil as they pass, and pulls out a wand for defense as they approach the farmhouse- though she doesn't use it yet.

Moving forward, you come up to the two buildings at the heart of the farm - a large barn, and the farmhouse the owners lived in. Neither looks like it's in particularly good shape, though the unpleasant smell of a decaying corpse is stronger from the house.

Mindful of Rixa's spells but wanting to be safe, Shalluk murmured, "Make sure none lurk in the Barn, then head for the main homestead?" Ideally he might like to secure the barn, turn it into a trap or some such, but Rixa's spells were likely more useful than anything he could easily come up with.

Assuming Zellara agrees, Rixa, before entering, first casts a spell from her wand, giving her a protective field of force, then stows it before pushing open the door.

Zelani nodded as she looked around before she followed the others towards the barn, considering her spells as she cautiously walked.

The barn is the larger of the two structures, an L-shaped building constructed around a unique feature - a 12-foot-high stone head, canted slightly to the left, depicting a helmed warrior, his face a stern model of determination. Moss has grown over much of the weathered figure, making his features hard to discern.

The inside of the place the place has become a macabre tangle of bones and partially-eaten carcasses (in most cases livestock, but in some, human farmers). However, there didn't seem to be any undead - ghoul or otherwise - currently inhabiting it.

Shalluk took a deep breath and instantly regretted it when his stomach boiled. He turned from the hideous decay of the place and looked away, but there was a job to be done. Focusing back on the barn, he opened his eyes a second time, revealing any of the undead that infested this place to his magic.

Rixa continues to scan the area for evil, eyes scanning every nook and cranny for anything that might be hiding. If she sees nothing, she reluctantly dismisses her size-increasing spell and enters the house.

Zelani cringed at the sight and smell, thoughts of a cleansing fire entering her thoughts. With no signs of any current threats, she followed Rixa heading towards the house.


The farmhouse is in a terrible state as well. A mutilated body lies in the farmhouse's kitchen. Although the corpse is already decaying and swarming with flies, the Sihedron Rune is still plainly visible upon the man's chest, as is a single scrap of parchment pinned to his tunic. The parchment has Zelani's name on it, and reads "Take the fever into you, my love - it shall be but the first of my gifts to you." An iron key still hangs around his neck on a leather cord. The key bears a heraldic symbol of a curious flower surrounded by thorns.

Shalluk shuddered at the man, the note and the key. He knew how much this twisted obsession was waring on Zelani, how much it upset her, but the Crossbowman refused to shield the woman from it. She was strong - strong enough to destroy the tainted celestial beneath the Goblin's fort, and strong enough to deal with this. "Maybe the key with help identify this fiend." Arming his crossbow, Shalluk swept the kitchen Farmhouse kitchen for any sign of the undead (and anything else, to an extent) before heading deeper.

Zelani followed the others carefully as they moved into the farmhouse, stopping dead at the sight of the poor dead person and that cursed star. Gripping the ring tightly in her pocket with one hand, she pressed her lips together as she moved and yanked away the note with the other hand. She read it, and with a shake of her head, shoved it into another pocket.

"I hope that will help, their obsessions have hurt so much...many... and I had foolishly...hoped this was unrelated to him." she said as she looked over the key...

..."I think I will need my library for this - or maybe someone in town will know. Let's get this place cleared out for Maester Grump." Zelani concluded with a sigh as she tried to take the key from the corpse as she tried to push down the mixture of emotions trying to rise in her. She had a task to do...

Rixa looks through the house, muttering a silent prayer to Shelyn as she looks over the sacrifice- for what else could it be? Rixa advances through the house, looking throughout for any more abominations of unlife, as well as keeping an eye out for what the key might go to.

Looking over the key, Zelani isn't able to get much information from it. She does, however, note the presence of several designs suggestive of those used by nobility - if none of you have knowledge of such things, you might be able to find someone in town who does. The scholar you talked to about the murders would almost certainly be able to tell something - other potential sources of information include the mistress of the Rusty Dragon Inn, the sheriff, and the old Harrower.

Other than that, you don't find any abominations - or much of anything else.

Nodding as the place was cleared, Shalluk left the tainted farmhouse and looked into the fields. "May I suggest we hunt those that remain and then burn this place to the foundations?"

I'm going to have to take some kinda Fire theme for Shalluk - his suggestion for everything is 'burn it!'

Shalluk's comment pulled a small smile and chuckle from Zelani. "Possibly, it may be the only way to certain, though what will the Maester and the others think?" Zelani answered as she cautiously followed him out of the dreadful farmhouse, looking around for what remains though her mind elsewhere...

"There's got to be something here.... right? Some reason the ghouls came here instead of somewhere else. We have some time, why don't we search the house thoroughly. We might find a clue of some sort. I'm not sure if burning is the best idea; though I wholeheartedly agree. What of the owners? Will burning down their home really help them any?"

Rixa keeps looking for.... something. A hidden compartment, a missed symbol, some overlooked thing that would give them some form of clue.

Continuing to look, you still do not find anything else of interest. Torching the building was possible, of course - though there was always the possibility the fire would spread to the fields and get out of control. That could definitely be bad for the local ecosystem... although as far as the owners went, you were pretty sure one of them was lying in a butchered heap on the floor.

Shalluk sighed, but was unwilling for this hellish place to cause further harm. "We should return, report and rest. In the morning we can help with a burial detail." And find out about the noble symbol on the key.

Zelani nodded sympathetically to Shalluk before she moved farther from the farmhouse, "Let's check nothing else is heading this way first..." she suggested ss she looked around for signs of anything else dreadful that needed to be dealt with before they returned. The lunar guardian tried to enjoy the night for a moment as she anxiously looked around...

Rixa nods and follows the others, but as they leave, she keeps a wary eye out for any undead they might have missed on the way in.

Aside from a few more bodies, you mostly found traces and signs of the undead that had been operating in the area. For now, at least, the farm looked like it was clear. Whoever had set the note was long gone.

Nodding, Shalluk headed back for town. He wished to report, bathe and eat in the hope that such would replace the sleep he would undoubtedly not be getting this fair night.

Zelani sighed, mixed feelings at the events of the night as she followed Shalluk back towards town. "Report to the Sherriff if he's still around at this hour, then home for food and maybe some rest? I think I have ingredients for a stew..." Zelani said towards Shalluk, though her mind clearly not on cooking.


*Listens in* That's certainly a doable plan. ...And it's probably worth noting that the Sheriff will wake up for you if he has to, though he'd definitely prefer to be woken up at night only for real emergencies. XD

The blue-haired girl thinks, "I don't think so. I was just going to stay in the inn, but if you have somewhere else and I can join that, I'd much prefer it." she gives Shalluk a beaming smile.

"Shalluk has been staying at my home since...after all that happened with the goblins and such up there, it seemed best while he recuperated and Şenay doesn't mind him so... Zelani shrugged at how the situation had fallen together as it had in a way she didn't mind but wouldn't admit to liking beyond her usual cheerful manner. Zelani had lost too many already for that.

It's a bit outside of town in the forest, so as long as you don't mind not being central...and all the things...I imagine we should be able to find space in one of the unused bedrooms if you like...We'll see who is on duty tonight and then make decisions on cooking and such. " Zelani said with a smile.

Likely won't have much time in her place but in case it is relevant - I imagine Zelani's house in a very old ruin-looking druidy plant-covered cottage well off the beaten track to most and filled with books, knick-knacks, bits and bobs...essentially, she is a very cheerful hoarder who has gotten quite a few thing over the years and thinks everything will be useful eventually, probably, at least it's safer here... It's all on shelves and neat and shiny but pretty much all the walls are shelving units with all the spaces by windows plant dominated. Şenay doesn't care for any of it but mainly stays in the warm parts of the house anyways. There may be an old even more ruined storage building and various bits outside but mostly forest.


Zelani's home was about as safe as it got outside of town - animals almost never bothered druids to begin with, and anything smarter than that usually recognized that pissing off a druid was a bad long-term plan. Avoidance was much wiser - and thus, more practiced. (It didn't hurt that the goblins were no longer much of a problem.)

Morning came earlier than you would have liked, but at least it came.

And don't forget to update your HP to reflect overnight healing. ^^ Oh, and you've all leveled up. As always, post your levelup summaries in the discussion thread for approval, and *after* you get that, you can update your aliases.

While morning brought a mild headache, thanks to a lack of sleep, it also brought the sun. Shalluk always enjoyed the sunrise. It was...odd. His spirit loved the light, and his body preferred the darkness. This meant part of him was easiest at the time when the other part was at its worse, but dusk and dawn brought balance.

Speaking of which...Shalluk walked to the small desk in his room and picked up the pair of crossbows. One was the one he had always carried -granted by his mother, a replica of her own - but now modified, a drum of arrows replacing the clip that had one been there, and the heavy arms replaced with a complex clockwork mechanism. Its rose wood stock and blackened steel was highlighted with brass etchings and scroll work.

The second was identical visually, but the wood was a much lighter whitewood stock, and the steel was polished to a mirror shine. Bronze replaced brass. Shalluk held the pair in each hand, weighing them. Dusk and Dawn. Balance.

As the sun rose into the sky, Shalluk slipped from the cottage on quiet, bare feet. Instead of his usual covering clothes he wore on his leggings and a light tunic. A few dozen paces from the house he set up a target, then stood back 30ft and aimed the pair of crossbows. Breathing slowly, calmly, he began to fire.

Barrage: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
Full Attack 1: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Full Attack 2: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Damage: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

The three bolts thudded into the wood in rapid succession, cracking it as the third thundered home. It wasn't the story. Three bolts in exactly the same place, splitting each other with there accuracy. But it wasn't bad, either. He lacked some of his traditional accuracy...but volume was useful too. And he could always practice fighting with a single bow again, as needed. But...he liked it. He enjoyed creating.

With a gesture, Shalluk retrieved the three bolts, floating them back into his quiver. He'd been training with Zelani, making his magic more...suited to himself. Not what he had inherited, not what he had been given, not what he had scrounged from ruins and scraps. What he had bought, created and worked for. It was a strange feeling, but one he enjoyed.

Shalluk smiled.

Rixa rises with the sun, as always. She spends some time out walking, then returns to the house and meditates for some time. A bird chirps nearby, and Rixa smiles as she sees the nightingale sitting at her feet. Rising from her morning prayers, she feels a glow of holy energy come upon her, and she whispers a quiet prayer, "Thank you, lady Shelyn, for giving me the power I will need to spare this town of its menace and to protect its people."

Zelani, having enjoyed pottering about her home to unwind during the night hours, did not rise with the dawn. The Lunar Guardian enjoyed her rest in her darkened room, rising awhile after the others, preparing herself in her room before slowly getting to the kitchen. She was thankful of no emergency messages yet this morning.

Opening the window, Zelani peeked out to trees and the training yard. "Do you want something to eat before we go to see the Sheriff? I've got some toast starting..."


At the very least, food probably wasn't going to be a bad idea... who knew how busy the day might be once you got started?

Shalluk glanced up at the sound of Zelani's voice, surprised at the height of the sun. He had spent the morning perfecting, tweaking and trying different tricks until he was satisfied that his martial skills would help others. The crossbowman hadn't quite perfected what he wanted, but firing three bolts into a melee put allies at risk. That was the more essential skill especially with Rixa's skill set. Still...it was something he could practice.

Holstering the heavily modified crossbows and collecting the spent bolts, Shalluk returned to the Druid's home and smiled nervously, feeling self-conscious at the lack of coverage his clothes provided. Still, people seemed much more...comfortable with his new skin than the old. Or maybe it was more comfortable with new deeds. Either way, Shalluk needed to get used to people seeing him.

"Breakfast would be nice, thank you. Would you like any help?"

Zelani nodded with a warm smile as Shalluk walked in. "Just starting with toast. If you want to make anything else, that would be delightful." the druid said while standing by her wood stove, being her normal welcoming self trying to give her best impression of a bright and bubbly morning person that the Lunar Guardian certainly was not. There was already a bowl of fruit and jars with toppings for the toast sitting at a nearby table which was mostly cleared bar a pile of books and papers to one side...
