Will frowns slightly. It was a lot of information but hardly any of it constructive towards getting to Edge or any of the other Colosseums. He'd have to gather more information. He returns to the others sure of the next course of action. "I would much prefer investigating these Colosseum fights rather than continue to hunt gargoyles in this labyrinthine plane. There is already a significant number of hunters here. I do not think our contribution will make much difference."

  • "We weren't sent here just to shoot gargoyles and make money though. We were supposed to be bagging enough gargoyles to catch the king's attention and forge new connections for the guild. I'm not sure running off to another plane to fight for glory and gold will accomplish much here. I think what we really need is to find a way to eliminate the gargoyle infestation permanently, either by driving them out, or convincing them to leave."

The hunter took another sip from his drink - slowly and thoughtfully this time. "Well, if you want to get rid of them, you might wanna try looking under the treasury. Big moon of pumice 'bout two hours out. Most people don't give it a second thought because it's such a common material, but there's a vault there shielded from divination. Since divination has a hard time tracking the gargoyles... just gotta look in the blind spots, yeah?"

"Seems like a good lead, might even be more profitable than chasing shadows like we had for now..." He shrugged

"And god, I kinda forgotten the whole, getting noticed by the king angle..." He ruffled the hair on the back of his neck.

  • "It's only been a few days (10 months tomorrow) since the briefing," Anders said with a shrug. "Though there's certainly been enough interesting sights to distract. What sort of vault? Wouldn't a vault be guarded?"

"Hmm," Will ponders, apparently unconcerned with the Colosseum idea being shot down. "Are there any other locations that do not show up to divination? Outsiders from the Prime Material near a vault of treasure could be construed as spying or attempted theft. If our mission is to grab the attention of the king then this is certainly one method but, as I understand it, we require positive attention. I believe this will seen negatively. Unless we can get approval before hand? Can we do that?"

Yeah, this took longer than I expected, really. XD Technically, you've done enough to complete the mission and move on to the next adventure, but you're welcome to keep going if you want to.

"Oh, it's no problem as long as you don't actually try to get into the vault." the not-quite-sober man answered in-between gulps of his drink. "It's not like they go around advertising the location, but it's not a secret. Can't hide a blind spot from a serious search. They have other ways of discouraging theft."

"Considering the rules at the beginning we should seek confirmation. What seems common since on one plane might not be so on another." Whether they get a location from the increasingly inebriated local or not, Will pushes for finding someone of authority and making sure their proximity to the vault will not be viewed in a bad perspective. Their mission was to increase diplomacy as well as hunt pests.

At your question, one of the city's earthen guards chuckled, replying in slow, broken common. "Many want to see treasures of planes. Great king holds great treasure. Safety is guaranteed. Look from far, okay. Get too close, messy."

Will nods at extra-planner being (wait, weren't they the extra-planner beings here?) and follows after.

Almost forgot, I want to buy 2 tanglefoot bags before we leave.

Tanglefoot bags, at least, were pretty easy to pick up. This city wasn't a hub like the City of Brass, but it clearly did a brisk trade, and both mundane and magical items seemed to be fairly plentiful. The sky was outright dark by now, though, and you'd have to risk some serious fatigue if you wanted to keep going tonight.

  • Looking at the sky, Anders nodded, "That's probably wise. Do either of you have any injuries I should heal before we rest for the evening?" The ex-paladin gingerly touched the light cut he had received earlier before continuing, "Best to be fully rested before going to fight those things again, right? Anyone remember if the outsider-friendly bar from earlier was a full inn, or just a tavern? If so, you could probably safely have a drink again, as long as you don't accidentally teleport yourself off the rock."

Fortunately, injuries didn't seem too serious. The tavern you'd visited before was definitely an inn as well, going up several floors - there were a limited number of places visitors could be housed, and since people often wanted to stay somewhere familiar, the places most suitable for humanoids clearly did brisk business.

That, and you suspected the locals wanted to limit the spread of outsiders and took a lot more space for themselves. Getting the room was easy enough. (-5 GP), and morning... well, 'dawned' might not have been the right word given the lack of a visible star, but it got brighter out.

  • Anders woke early and blearily began gathering his gear. As he was checking his pack, a hastily scrawled note fell to the floor. After a quick read, Anders woke Asem and handed him the note. "It looks like Will decided to try his hand at solo gladitorial combat after all, rather than continuing the gargoyle investigation. Do you think you and I can sneak into the warded area and determine if the gargoyles are hidden there, without getting overwhelmed by their numbers? Even if we can't deal with the threat directly, delivering the information about where they're hiding might be valuable enough information to attract the king's attention."

  • Anders dug around in his pockets for a moment before pulling out a few small coins. "I'm not sure we'll find much that could be able to help us with the money I have left. Let's just check the place out. If we get attacked by a gargoyle, we can probably fight it off. If two... still probably fine. If we see more than that gathered up, we should probably head back anyways, since the information that there are bigger groups of gargoyles hiding there could be valuable on its own."

Did I miss the distribution of bounty from the earlier gargoyles? I don't think I spent anything except for the money for a room. And let's just see what's there and be ready to run.

You should've gotten the promised bounty when you turned the proof of your kills in. ^^

When their 'shopping' tour was over the young man still had a cheerful mood as they begun the treck toward the vault. He was curious, more than worried, the planes after all still held countless of new amazing vistas and surreal marvels that would never truly stop to impress him.

With the low horizons, walking the spheres here felt a bit like constantly falling, or perhaps standing near a cliff. It didn't help that only some of the paths had easy walkways - sometimes you had to shuffle ninety degrees from world to road.

It didn't take too long to approach the great vaults of the plane, which were visibly and heavily guarded. Visitors seemed allowed, at least up to a point. Beyond were enormous, ornate mithril doors. A plaque near the side described the vaults in moderate detail, citing the guards, the treasures, the guards, the lead warding against divination powers, and oh yes, the guards. Clearly, being hidden was not the defense of choice around here...

  • How big is the vault. Is this the same with local gravity on the sphere, so we could potentially walk around the entire surface? Given an opportunity it'd probably be a good idea to search the exterior of the globe for any small entrances or anything.

"Well, it's certainly impressive looking." Anders approached a guard (one that looks to be in charge, if possible), and asked, "Excuse me. My friend and I are investigating the gargoyle infestation plaguing this area, and we're following up a lead that suggests they may be hiding here, using the lead makeup and any wards of your vault as protection from being found. Have you heard or seen anything unusual? Crunching rocks, or unusual piles of gravel and dust? Are there any cracks or caves in this area that aren't part of the actual vault itself that could be benefiting from the protections simply by proximity?"

    Flying Shape Speed 60 ft, Flight (poor) 30 ft, Size: large, Reah 10 ft, Init +1. Perception +10 (scent, night vision), Trip, Pounce, AC 21, Hp: 42/54. Attacks: 2 Claws +11 (1d6+7), Bite +11 (1d8+7+trip) magic damages, F:7, R: 6, W 4, 49/

Yah and can we look around a bit or the area is forbidden to strangers?” Asked the young man, the plan was after all to ingratiate themselves to the king and well, snooping around one of his valuts if the place was off limits... Didn't sound like a great plan. “Any cave that you know about where the Gargoyles would be able to nest?

The information provided isn't clear on how large the vault actually is. That seems to be one of the details kept secret for the sake of security.

At your query, the rocky figure standing guard crossed its arms and seemed to ponder the question a bit. "...Entire globe is warded against divination. It is... not impossible others might wish to conceal themselves using it." he said, voice like slowly-tumbling stones. "Elsewhere on this globe would be the most likely. They would not be able to hide within or next to the vault itself. Our security is not so weak as to permit that, but we do not bother to monitor every step of this globe."

  • "Of course not. I'm sure your security is quite thorough. Since it seems possible that the gargoyles may have nested here, we'll patrol for a bit and see if we can uncover anything. We just wanted to make sure you folks were properly informed about why we're here. Thank you for your time. Asem, shall we? How about.... that direction?" Anders pointed off in a random direction along the globe, away from the vault entrance.

"Makes sense...." He nodded. "I don't know we should try t map it perhaps... So that we avoid checking the same place twice. I mean assuming that there is some feature we can use."

By the way how large is the sphere? I was thinking that Asem might take a form that can fly and check it from afar to see if there are caves or anything.

The spheres are typically a number of miles across. Gotta be big enough to hold all these caves, you know? XD And too small would be impossible to walk on - as it is, you still get a regular sense of tumbling forward.

Scouring the surface of the vault's... 'sphere' wasn't quite the right word, but it wasn't a moon or a planer... eventually brought you to an area where there appeared to be faint claw marks on the ground, as it some sort of hard-taloned creature had recently landed nearby. Where they went from there, however, wasn't clear - since the scent trail seemed to end at the ground.

    Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22

Good news, everyone! 8D I have access to Planar Adventures right now, including stuff like Conduit feats that let you draw power from planes you've visited. Are either of you interested in these sorts of abilities, given the amount of time you spend on the planes, or do you have other plans for your builds?

Anders was correct. After some careful fiddling around, you located a cunningly-hidden latch that popped out to reveal a manually-carved pit leading straight down. It was definitely intended for creatures with wings, and wide enough to permit their use. There was a very real possibility this was the gargoyles' nest - although it wasn't clear how many of them might reside within.

  • I was happily impressed with Planar Adventures (especially after being disappointed in Wilderness Adventures). The Planar Infusion line of feats seem really fun, though the Plane of Earth's benefits don't seem particularly interesting. I need to actually sit down to stat out my revised character using spheres of might, but it looks like I'll have more flexible feat use after I do since I won't be locked into the massive obligatory ranged combat feat chain any longer. So short answer is yes, they look cool.

"Well, this is something. Probably not a great idea to just jump into a pit of unknown depth filled with unknown numbers of who knows what, but just reporting a secret entrance probably won't be enough to grab the king's attention. We could try to find a spot nearby to hide and watch for any gargoyles coming or going. Any other ideas?"

I can't think of anything off the top of my head, but I'm still thinking of how to approach this.
