"Sadly, not me. I know a thing or two about swordsmithing, but armor is beyond my training."

Blommhilde moved towards the side passage, peeking further.

"I wish I had the skill to MAKE that kind of hole in a armor.", Sigurd states, impressed. "That said, I work mostly with wood, and craft ships, not weapons or armor, so I can't fix that -"
Sigurd takes another look at the Troll. Lots of stories about those, but he had never seen one. This one seemed dead, but genuine.
His curiosity sated, he picks up the torch again, ready to proceed.

Asta snorts at Sigurd's joke, before crooking an eyebrow as he mentions ships. "My father was a great boatbuilder. Harrald Pedersson, perhaps you've heard of him? I'm also a decent boatbuilder myself. I carved the keel of the ship you found Blommhilde and I on, though I probably shouldn't brag, given the state you found us in..."

Pausing, Asta considers the more important question at hand, before raising her bow and pointing the arrow down the darkened hallway. "I can do nothing with the armor either. Shall we go meet our ancestors?"

Eydis nodded and sighed. Still, she tucked away the armour before following. If someone on the boat could repair it...

As you move forward, a side passage branches off here, but the ceiling planks have given way, resulting in a collapse that completely seals it behind dirt and stone. Poking at it reveals nothing of interest before you move onward.

The passage opens into a wide chamber. Three low tunnels exit from the chamber, but a large boulder blocks each. Stacked in the center of the chamber is a pyramid composed of the skulls and racks of elk, moose, and reindeer. Of even greater note, however, are the walls of fitted stone. Crudely painted (if surprisingly detailed) murals arranged in sections almost completely cover them, and appear to show a story of sequence of events.

Mural 1: Located just to the left of the entrance, this mural depicts a large group of travelers. They ride short, stocky ponies and drag domed tents on wagons and runners. Many more are afoot than ride, and the riders are clearly warriors armed with lances and curved swords.

Mural 2: The riders battle a group of large, gnarled giants that come down from mountains to attack. A rider wearing a crown stands over another warrior clearly killed by the creatures. The king appears to be holding off the creatures while the other riders escape. On one edge of the mural, a group of the giant creatures carries a female human figure up into the mountains.

Mural 3: This mural is painted onto the first boulder. The travelers stand at the edge of a forest. A group of humanoid figures with pointed ears turns them back from entering, but provides them food and warm hides for their travels.

Mural 4: This mural depicts the travelers heading through a blizzard. Many seem to be sick or dying. To one side, the horses being slaughtered to feed those travelers that are still able to walk.

Mural 5: This mural is painted the middle boulder. The travelers walk into a sharp-edged mountain range. They are much reduced in number. Their king walks in front, beckoning them onward while a woman next to him causes fire to float in the air before them, lighting the way.

Mural 6: Painted directly across from the entrance, this mural shows the travelers finding safety among the ruins of mighty cities on a plain of ice beyond the sharp-peaked mountains. The king and queen sit upon a throne in one of the cities, but the folk in the other cities turn their backs on him and his queen. Above them can be seen depictions of their memories where they recall the many losses they suffered to battle and deprivation.

Mural 7: Painted in a completely different style with more realism but less aesthetic beauty and fluidity to the lines, this depicts the cities in Mural 6 now whole and filled with people. They are a great nation. But painted above them is the image of a great bloody fanged maw (recognizable as the symbol of Althunak).

Mural 8: Among the cities in the previous mural, a new city is being constructed on the shores of a frozen lake. The fanged maw symbol hangs above this city. Many people in chains march from the other cities toward this new city. Many other people leave the cities and head back over the sharp-peaked mountains to a coastline thick with seals and birds.

Mural 9: This one is painted directly on the last, southern boulder. A misshapen man with a glowing sword stands in the water along the coast. A village stands behind him where dozens of people crouch fearfully. The man battles a large serpentine creature that rears up from the waves.

Mural 10: The misshapen man leads an army of spear-wielding folk up and over the sharp-peaked mountains. Beyond lie the many cities, now in ruins once again, and the one mighty city by the lake now complete. The fanged maw symbol still hangs in the air above it. A massive army gathers on the ice plain before the city awaiting the approach of the army of the misshapen man.

Mural 11: The misshapen man stands among a ring of fallen comrades on the edge of the icy lake. Black ichor covers his sword, and the clawed hand of some gigantic fiendish creature sinks below the surface of the icy lake. The misshapen man has a rent in his breastplate from which a river of blood flows.

Mural 12: This is painted just to the right of the entrance. A column of spear-wielding warriors carries the misshapen man upon a bier back across the sharp mountains toward the coastline below. Their destination appears to be a small rocky island just off the shore.

Eydis gestured to the 11th panel. "It appears the Gods have seen fit to answer your question. There is the thing that holed this armour." So...this was the tale of how a nation was founded in the ruins, Althunak tainted it and heroes overthrew the creatures champions and sank his city into the seas. They showed where the hero lay now, and where the taint of Althunak most likely spread. "My thoughts are that the God of Cannibals plans to once more build his great city. To attempt once more the same folly of the past."

Does the either the crowned King or the city remind Eydis of the floating city she saw before?

Looking over the murals, Blommhilde committed to memory as much as she could about the pictures. "If I'm reading this correctly, the cult of Althunak betrayed the Giantslayer King and the Sorceress Queen, who settled these lands after great hardships, allying with the Elves. It is not the first time that cannibals plague these shores. And this here is the resting place of the Hunchback Hero, Serpentslayer, who moved against the cannibals and fell by the hand of a great evil."
"But whether he did succeed, that I wonder. Is this black city the den of this Elvanti beast? Or is it a ruin now?"

And who was the woman dragged off by the giants? And the fallen warrior? There is material for a saga here.

Fighter 1|Hp 2/20 | AC 18/20 w/shield| Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +5 | Per +5 | longsword +9 (1d8+4) | xp: 180

Asta scratches her head, clearly confused. "So... our ancestors are also the ancestors of Jarvi's people?"

Tapping her fingeron the second mural, the hunter frowns. "And this woman? She was just taken away and doesn't make another appearance. Is this important? Or is she just a... a metaphor? For the depravity of the giants?"

Looking around the room, Asta's frown grows larger. "We're on Hero's Rock. Where's the body of the misshapen man, this "Serpentslayer" as Blommhilde calls him?"

"As to whether the Serpentslayer succeeded, I believe he did, to an extent. He banished the evil of Althunak for a time, but it has regrouped and risen again. And we'll need to finish what the Serpentslayer started."

The murals don't seem to resemble the floating ice temple you visited.

You don't see any bodies, but you do see three boulders blocking passages - it's likely they lead to tombs. That said, as Asta tapped the mural, the temperature in the vault seems to drop precipitously and an eerie sense of being watched pervades the chamber. The corner of your eye catches movements and you see figures stepping into the room, seemingly solid but passing through the boulders as if they were not even there. Through the eastern boulders come a man and a woman. Both wear burial shrouds made of furs and have leather cords holding medallions and assorted bangles. They resemble the Ulnat peoples you have encountered in their physical features and dress. Both appear long dead and mummified from the cold. From the west steps the mummified form of a hulking misshapen man who clearly has troll blood running through his veins.

"Who comes here to steal from the honored dead, to desecrate their tombs and rob them of their eternal rest?" speaks the first mummified man.

"If you come to steal, be gone lest you incur our wrath," intones the troll-blooded corpse, eyeing the armor you took.

"Hearken. These may be heroes, though not of our people. Let them lay forth supplications if they are so and beg for mercy if they be but common thieves," says the woman.

Eydis laid the armour down. "We come not take, but to ask. We come to bring the spear and the blade to the followers of Althunak, whose warriors owe blood debt to our kin. They slew of Jarl in sneak attack and ambush, and now we come to destroy them. We also fight with the people of these lands, who toil under the influence of the God of Winter and Cannibals. We ask for what tools you can give to aid our fight, so that we can bring both justice and vengeance upon them. Help us."

Dropping to one knee, Asta lays her bow on the ground in front of her, before flipping her hair away from her face. "We meant no offense, guardians. As Eydis says, we are here to ask your help, so that your descendants - and then ours - shall not fall before Althunak's horrors."

Blommhilde had never seen a departed spirit before, and she fell to her knees in reverence, awestruck. "On my honor and my life, proud spirits, my spear-sisters speak sincerely. From these paintings we can glimpse of your story, and yet I have no name for you other than the one I imagined. We shall lend our arms and our hearts to your people against the foul God of Winter and Cannibals, and for your assistance I shall offer one thing more: should you tell us your names, revered heroes, I will carry forth an ode of your tales, back to our shores, to those who never knew and to those who have lost memory, so that things done not be forgotten in time, and that great and marvelous deeds not lose their glory."
"Hear of a tale of He Who Fought Giants
And the Sorceress Queen, singer of fire.
Of how the Cannibal God cried blood tears
when against him rode Serpentslayer."

"So swears by her name Blommhilde Bjornsdottir, known as Shieldheart."

At the mention of Althunak, all three of the spirits scowled - the troll-blooded most of all, though they appeared mollified by Asta's comments.

"Such is ever the way of the Lord of Cannibals." the misshapen man spat. "Even with his living corpse bound under the Lake of Frozen Screams, he can influence the world... and death has taken more of my power than of his. But do not call us by your made-up titles."

The other man nodded. "I am Hvram Kalsong the Third, last of my line. It was I who led the Ulnat after the Fall, through the trials and death that awaited us. My wife, She of Fair Eyes - sorceress of the Elkani, who dwell far to the setting sun."

"And I am Hvram, the Half-Born, their descendant through their stolen daughter." the troll-blooded wraith added. That sentence alone presented an... unpleasant... explanation of his heritage. The Half-Born looked to She of Fair Eyes a moment later. "What say you, grandmother? They are not of our people, but they speak of fighting our foes. Be they worthy of our aid?"

The woman considered your group for a moment. "Hearken well. Within my tomb is an ancient magic - one capable of repairing Hvram's armor. And each of us holds a weapon." she clapped her hands together, and as she did so, her eyes brightened with power. Three items floated through the stone of the tombs and hovered in the air in the center. "My husband's blade-" a curved sword of a type none of you had seen before wiggled up and down in the air "-is deadly to magical beasts. My own wand-" a small, slender wooden stick tipped with a ruby wiggled forward "-unleashes fire upon foes. And Fellfrost-" This one, at least, you recognized as a longsword, "-freezes with cold fire, but against those of ice, it burns hot."

"But these are not yours." Hvram Kalsong, the elder, said firmly. "We will permit you to borrow our weapons, and to use my wife's magic to repair my grandson's armor - four items for four heroes. But when your task is done and the minions of Althunak slain, return them without fail, that they might be present when next our people have need. Fail to do so, and there is no ocean we will not cross, no beast or spell or power that will stop us from taking back what is ours."

Eydis looked to the others. "The items are theirs, to do with as they please. If they so wish them back...well, I would rather keep it, but I am no thief of the dead nor the living. I am willing to do as asked." It wasn't ideal. But then, she would like feel the same. She would rather the artifacts she took to her grave went to her people rather than strangers. Of course, she expected a pyre...but that was another matter.

Sigurd had stood and listened, as the woman were keen enough to speak with these departed souls. He was busy remembering Sagas and Stories he heared and matching them up with what happened on the Murals.
But when the generous offer was made, he nodded:"A welcome offer, surely, these items will prove to be valuable through our expedition to slay Althunak - after which we will honor your terms and return your people's artifacts. Yet one more thing I would ask for...tell us more of our enemy if you can. We know little about Althunak yet beyond what was learned on our Jarls journey, and what little your descendents could tell us - information about our enemy could be as valuable as any of these items you offer..."
Don't know if they can provide some insights or hints, but worth asking-

Fighter 1|Hp 2/20 | AC 18/20 w/shield| Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +5 | Per +5 | longsword +9 (1d8+4) | xp: 180

Asta eyes the strange floating sword, her attention diverted as the others talk. As Sigurd talks, Asta turns her attention back to the spirits. "Yes, anything you know of Althunak would be most welcome. And," the girl points to the husband's sword, "What kind of sword is that?"

"In time, ancient foes are forgotten - but what is forgotten is not always gone." She of Fair Eyes answered as the other two wraiths glanced her way. "Althunak is the master of cannibals, the Demon Lord of ice and cold. He is the chill no fire can warm, the madness of consuming what ought never to be eaten. His followers are madmen, cultists, those who take the form of beasts... and things that ought to never exist in the world. When last his cult rose, it took all the power of the Ulnat to strike down his forces, but even so, truly slaying him was beyond mortal power. Althunak is like a disease, and the longer his cult is allowed to fester, the worse it becomes. His followers deserve no mercy, and will show none to you."

After she finished, Hvram the elder just put a ghostly hand on his blade. "This design is no longer used in the North, but my people referred to it as a scimitar. It strikes harder than many weapons - and has felled scores of unnatural beasts."

Blommhilde nods. She didn't intend to be a grave robber, and if the items weren't gifted, she was but too happy to return them to the owners. "You have our thanks, noble heroes. You shall not be forgotten, and your legacy wil live on as we shed the wound-sea out of the cultists."

Eydis' fingers gripped her spear more tightly. She had no real interest in the odd sword, preferring the solid wood and metal of Roksper. It was the armour that had caught her eye. "If we cannot slay the source of the infection, the Cannibal God himself, we can at least lance the boil of his followers and allow the world to heal."

Fighter 1|Hp 2/20 | AC 18/20 w/shield| Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +5 | Per +5 | longsword +9 (1d8+4) | xp: 180

The implications of the wraith - no mercy will be shown to you - worry at Asta. She bites her bottom lip, and pushes the thoughts of cannibalism from her mind.

Reaching out, her hand shaking a little, the girl looks to the wraith. "May I? I promise to return it."

The sword sits strangely in the hunter's hand, not at all like her spear or her bow. It would take practice, if I'm the one the Fates desire wield this simy... simitar. More likely, one of the others should use it.

"Thank you," she says simply, and nods to the wraiths, before more thoughts, unbidden, grip Asta's fevered imagination.

I hope at least that if I'm eaten, I'm not alive when they start...

Two items were chosen - and two remained.

Asta:
As you think to yourself, She of Fair Eyes glances at you... and you get the sense she knows exactly what's going through your mind. Whatever these spirits actually are, you're fairly certain that they can see into the hearts of mortals with ease.

Sigurd looks at the artefacts that remain. Feeling the handle of his own Throwing Axe, he looks at the others:"Both that Sword, as well as this Skimi-Taa blade are certainly powerful...but all my life, I've trained and learned to use an axe. Using a bladed weapon is a completely different stlye. And my swiftness is my shield - a strong armour like that would likely slow me down...that leaves the wand...if I can use it? Does it take a wise-woman to make it engulf enemies in fire?"
Sigurd seemed curious - certainly, all of the items were powerful heirlooms - but he had little expertise in their use, and considering they were only borrowed, there was little incentive to invest time into learning how to use them properly, when Althunak was growing stronger by the day.
Wanted to let the others pick first - no real match there - and no UMD if that's relevant...

Fighter 1|Hp 2/20 | AC 18/20 w/shield| Fort +7, Ref +6, Will +5 | Per +5 | longsword +9 (1d8+4) | xp: 180

Yep, no UMD for me either, and no destruction sphere, so I figured Asta can't use the wand. She actually can't use the swords either - no weapon proficiency. So I'm happy to trade out with whoever needs whatever. Or she can just hold the sword and pass it off to a better-suited fighter at a suitably dramatic moment :)

Blommhilde pondered the two items for a moment before choosing. The wand would have given her strength against distant foes, but her knowledge of magic was slim beyond what the Fates had thrust upon her. So she placed her hand upon Fellfrost, feeling its balance. "I will treasure this with my life."

She of Fair Eyes snorted with laughter at Sigurd's question. "Poor protection it would be for our people if all but none among them could use my wand. Nay, it takes a certain flair, but it is easy enough even for the untrained."

Sigurd nodded, not taking the laughter as offense:"Fair enough, I shall make good use of it then, to the detriment of Althunak and those who follow him!"
I thought you wanted the Armor, Eydis? - Actually the Wand will be a great excuse to sink a few points into UMD next level...so, quite happy.

I do, but since I don't need UMD to use the wand I wasn't sure if you wanted to pass it to me.

Nodding, Eydis picked up the armour again. "May I retrieve the magics to repair this armour from your tomb?" Eydis addressed the ghosts.

Mm. XD UMD isn't one of the recommended skills for this campaign, and you already know it's a pretty low-magic, low-item setting. Offering a useful wand that requires UMD to use feels like it would have been a little mean, so I took that out. XD So it's a low check you can make trained or untrained instead.

Aye, I avoided UMD so far. But then, i do get a ton of skill points. And I have ok Cha. And it's a class skill. Making sure I pass the check even on a 1 is not a big deal(such as when I would want to do that "engulf enemies in flames"-thing during a combat, where I could not take 10), and makes using it a lot more reliable if we have not returned it by then. Regardless, even in a low-magic setting it could be situationally useful to have some UMD available. Flexibility and all that - if I never use it again in the campaign, also not a huge deal, but it feels good to be prepared.

She of Fair Eyes simply gestured, and what looked like a truly ancient scroll (equivalent to a Greater Make Whole spell) floated through the wall and came to rest on the rocks in the middle. "Remember your words well - for we most certainly will." the ancient king said - and with that, the wraiths passed through the rocks again, apparently done with the conversation.

Picking up the scroll, Eydis said, "They can be helpful, but doubt not there words. They are also vengeful, and mortal barricades such as time and distance mean nothing to them." Picking up the breastplate too, Eydis considered. "If it is like a normal scroll, then any who could cast the spell within it can use it. Any who can use magic can use it too, but risk failing. Even those with no skill in the Crafts can do so, with training. Should I try and use this here, or wait until later?"

"I'd suggest not using these magics on the hallowed grounds - if you misread one of the runes because it faded, who knows what happens, the whole place could collapse down on us. Best we wait until we are outside.", Sigurd was clearly reluctant to use the ancient scroll down in the tomb, and eager to leave the place: "As for the apparitions...fear them, and pity them, for they are trapped here and may never know the splendor of the afterlife we can look forward to."

"But are they? Or are these echoes of who they where? Or did, perhaps, their spirit come here from that afterlife, by strength of will? Not a question to be answered while we live, I fear."
Committing to memory had been said by the shades, Blommhilde moved back towards the surface, holding Fellfrost. I will need a sheath.

"I dare say neither. They seemed too focused to be just echoes, too present, and mentally flexible. And if they had the means to come here from the afterlife by strenght of will? Then a lot more people would offer their guidance from beyond the grave. Trust me, if force of will was all it took, my grandfather would be significantly more present in my life.", Sigurd replied with a grin.

If there were answers, the wraiths and their tomb were not providing them. Stepping back outside, you found your ship right where you'd left it - and relieved looks on the faces of its crew. Curious ones, too, as they looked at the new items you held.

And my father as well, Sigurd, Asta thinks, momentarily glum.

Still, it was a fine day, the hunter muses, as she steps outside, blinking her eyes against the glare of the sun. Shrugging at the crew, she pats the scimitar wended through her belt. "It is called a simi-tar. And yes, they were loaned freely, by the ancestors of Jarvi's people. We also saw his people's history, but I'll leave that to Blommhilde to speak of. She's more graceful of the tongue than I."

Eydis stored the damaged breastplate and the scroll with her things. The crew would not appreciate being witness to the miraculous mending of the item, especially since it was given to her as magic from spirits beyond there people. Better to do it when fewer eyes were on her.

"Listen!", Sigurd shouts when they return to the ship, drawing attention to himself. Displaying the wand, Sigurd jumps up at the helm, so everybody can see: "When I heared the Jarl was slain, I vowed to avenge him. When we learned it was the doing of Althunaks people, I vowed to raze their homes and salt their earth. When we learned that Althunak himself styles himself king of ice, I vowed to let him dance with Loptr's Favor on a pyre, rather than give him a good clean death in the spear-din. Behold, the Gods listened and provided! This artifact bestows Loptr's kiss on our enemies. Praise the Gods, for they look upon our journey with goodwill!"
Raising his hand, Sigurd fires the Wand straight upwards.(If there's nothing in the way)

Basically I want them to acknowledge that our new magic-ky stuff is not some alien creepy equipment but rather actually tools OUR gods wanted us to have. Something that is strange/weird but worth cheering for because it's something that proves that we have the Gods favor, rather than fearing it(or the wielders) for it's alien-ness.

Make an untrained UMD check against DC 10. ^^ (As noted in Discussion, that's what it takes to use the wand without the Destruction sphere.) On a success, you'll see the fire shoot upwards and get some awe from the crew - and requests to not do that while on the ship. XD On a failure, they will be rather less impressed.

"It is a tale for an evening, with mulled mead in our hands and the Northern Lights shining over us." said Blommhilde, looking for a scabbard for Fellfrost. "A tale of ancient foes, of loss and defiance."

---Later in the evening, assuming nothing more happens---

"Rode the Ulnat at the dusk of their land
Hvram Kalsong broke the snow towards new dwellings
She of Fair Eyes rode proud at his side
By birth Elkani, sorceress by blood, by choice his wife

Through storm and blizzard they rode and fought and walked
Elves gave them succor, dwelling they did not
Through feral giants was Hvram's heart wounded
His daughter taken by the vile creatures

After death and trials, in mighty cities they settled
Though strife and rivalry were once more burning
An ancient evil reared its fanged head
A city built for Althunak the cannibal

But still the name of Hvram was carried
By the Half-Born, grandson through stolen daughter
When cannibals attacked, he did strike back
Sea-Serpent's slayer, Fellfrost-wielding warleader

Bled out the cannibals, led in dark exile
Bled Althunak, deep in the Lake of Frozen Screams
But too bled Hvram, claws rending his heart
His noble warrior's heart, pumping cursed blood"

UMD: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 Sorry, I figured Take 10 was a thing for this and the Checks would only be necessary during combat. But seems the dice don't feel like ruining the moment :)

Eydis watched Sigurd's display, wary for signs of fear in the crew. Fearful Northmen became angry very fast.

Indeed, they do not feel like ruining it. XD Always nice.

The crew murmured a bit as Sigurd activated the wand - and a burst of fire spiraled up into the air before detonating in a large sphere, rocking the ship a bit. Nobody actually screamed - to show fear was to be a coward, and most Northlanders would genuinely prefer to die first. (Given that Valhalla was reputed to be open more-or-less only to the brave, there was some sense to this beyond the sheer stubbornness of the inhabitants of this land.)

Blommhilde's verses, on the other hand, appeared to be going over quite well - when the winters were long and dreary, all forms of entertainment became welcome, and you were all soon back onboard. Hallbjorn, for his part, just nodded slightly as he listened. "'Tis kind of Jarvi's ancestors to offer aid. What think you, lads? Shall we gift the ancients a few furs to decorate their graves? If they offer weapons of war, the fruits of prosperity seem like a fair offering." He rubbed his thick beard.

Asta beamed. Hallbjorn was a fine captain, and a wise one to boot. "I think it is a fine offering."

Eydis nodded. "Wise and just, Captain." The weapons would be of use to everyone.

"I know not what an ancient spirit may think of furs, but I will gladly share with them the spoils from the defilers we are hunting. A broken maw, perchance."

At Blommhilde's words, Hallbjorn barked a laugh. "Aye, those too. There's little more fitting for a grave than tokens of one's enemies." he said. One of the other men grabbed six seal furs, well-dried after the care of hunting, and vaulted off the ship to stride onto the island and bring them inside the tomb (rather than leaving them out in the elements). He returned a few moments later with a thoughtful expression. "So, these cultists... they have several places they've taken, no? Which shall we visit first?"

"Perhaps we should probe there strength," Eydis suggested. "Which of these places lies closest to this one? We can strike them fast and quick, see how powerful these spawn of Winter have become."
