"Doesn't look like my fire attacks will do anything to them, and those are the only weapons I have!" Arialora cries.

Basically Lora is useless in this fight, unless she can get off a chill touch and she'd be very very hesitant to approach the skeletons to try such a thing. We need to grab Eliphas and run methinks.

Male Elf Arc 1 / Slyr 1 | HP: 10/12 | AC: 19 / T: 17 / FF: 16 | Fort: +3, Ref: +5, Will: +3; +2 vs. Enchantment | CMB: +3, CMD: 16 | Init: +3, Perception: +5 | Arcane Res. 1/4

Didn't know if they were regular burning skeletons or not. So with that info...

"Lora, see if you can get Eliphas away from here, I'll try to draw them away. I'll meet you back at the alchemist's once I lose them. Even if we could beat them, these skeletons will explode when they're destroyed!" Maverick shouted while he tried to quickly come up with a plan. It seems that my training was far too narrowly focused. I am not prepared to deal with these. Perhaps after Lora and Eliphas are safely away, I can summon a pony to aid my own escape?

HP: -2/12 | AC: 12 / T: 12 / FF: 10 | Fort: +5, Ref: +4, Will: +3 (+2 vs enchantments) | R. Touch: +2 | CMB: -1, CMD: 11 | Init: +2, Perception: +7

Is it possible for Lora to reach Eliphas and grab him without taking AOOs? If so, she will do so.

Arialora nods to Maverick, looking for a way to safely reach Eliphas.

Sadly, no.

Attack of Opportunity (Arialora): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

The good news was that Arialora managed to deftly dart away from the skeleton near her and move towards Eliphas. The bad news was that Milda's cries rose even higher as she darted towards Arialora from behind, a small dagger glinting in her hand as she stabbed out. She seemed to have lost all sense and reason - 'psychotic' was really the only way of describing it.

Melee: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 for Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Maverick's bird, at least, had managed to hit the skeleton with its first talon attack - that wasn't enough to kill it, but it had definitely taken a significant amount of damage. (Skeletons: Good at killing things. Not so good at not getting killed themselves.)

The three undead shook wildly, and the one that had been attacking Eliphas moved to flank Maverick, joining the companion that stepped five feet forward. The other headed for Milda, clearly not recognizing her as being on the same team.

Melee (Maverick): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 = 9
Melee (Maverick): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 + 2 = 13
Melee (Milda): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + (4) = 10

With a sickening crack, the creature's weapon slammed into Milda's chest, breaking her ribs and sending her sprawling limply to the ground.

Am I within reach of Eliphas now? If not, is there a skeleton in melee with me?

A more relevant question: You did notice that you got hit earlier, too, right? At the same time Eliphas did?

If I 5 ft away, is my bird's target no longer next to anyone now?

You'll still be next to at least one of them no matter what, but yes, you could step 5 feet away from the damaged one. ^^ If you do so, it will not be next to anyone else.

Male Elf Arc 1 / Slyr 1 | HP: 10/12 | AC: 19 / T: 17 / FF: 16 | Fort: +3, Ref: +5, Will: +3; +2 vs. Enchantment | CMB: +3, CMD: 16 | Init: +3, Perception: +5 | Arcane Res. 1/4

Ok cool.

Round 2

Seeing the skeletons take the bait, Maverick took up a defensive posture and stepped away from the damaged undead just before his golden eagle swooped in to attack.

Total defense, then 5 ft step away from the damaged skeleton, and on the side furthest from Arialora and Eliphas. Eagle will 5 ft and full attack again.

Ahh...we were flat footed. Well in that case I'm bleeding out too.

Stabilize Roll: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 2 = 6

The skeleton the eagle was attacking exploded-

Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2

-and scorched the feathers of the bird. That didn't stop the other two skeletons from maneuvering around in a clear attempt to pin Maverick between them (and stay away from the bird - it wouldn't be able to full attack quite yet).

Melee: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 2 = 23 for Damage: 1d6 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 2 + (5) = 11
Melee: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 + 2 = 18

The second skeleton's attack missed. The first one... not so much. Even with the total defense, it was still accurate enough to thud into Maverick's kneecap, and the weapon blazed with angry fire that slowly reached out to consume him...

...Welp.

...and THAT is what will happen if you leave now, said the Gnome, and finished his performance with illusion magic, and the group went to bed in his treehouse to rest for the night.

*smile*
Just kidding, but where's a sheriff when you need them. Feel sorry for you two. I know I'll survive/be brought back by my sponsor...in another time/place probably :P

----------------------
And Time Passed...
----------------------

You awaken to the sensation of something damp and viscous covering your face and body. Your first reflex is to wrench two, thin tubes from your nose and open your mouth to extract a small pipe which apparently kept you from drowning in the thick gel now draining through the bottom of an enclosed cylinder supporting your upright body. A harsh light shines from above as you wipe more of this unknown substance from your face and eyes, and your muscles feel weak and uncertain as you push open a transparent window-like door to release you into the room beyond.

Eight similar cylinders greet your eyes, all arranged along the room’s four, stone walls, forming an irregular octagon. Each one appears constructed of a thick, durable, organic material except for the transparent doors which swing open from the front. Fibrous roots snake down from the 15-foot ceiling overhead, attaching to the top of these cylinders, and a metal plate bolted above them illuminates the room. To the north stands a door bereft of hinges or handles, while a green, three-inch circle slowly blinks on the wall next to it.

You're not alone in the room. Standing close to the door are four other creatures. Standing roughly five feet tall, they resemble an upright canine with a pronounced snout, lolling tongue, and a mouth open clear to the jawbone. As they see you emerge from the pods, they immediately start growling - the sounds are clearly a language of some kind, but not one you recognize.

Having just emerged from the pods, you have no gear of any kind, save basic clothing - no weapons, no armor, and so on. You have been in the pods for an unknown amount of time - any abilities that must be memorized each day are not yet available. Any abilities that can be memorized and stay ready until used ARE available. Any powers that do not require memorization - say, Sorcerer spells - are likewise available.

At the bottom of your posts, use the OOC tags to note any statistics different from those in your quick-reference bar (most probably your AC).

There is a link to a Google Docs map at the top of the page. You have edit permissions, and can move tokens around when you make moves in combat.

Vincent thought, as he strained to remember how he had come here. As he glanced to his right, he noted a pair of four-armed men similarly covered in slime. Low growling from the other side of the room soon demanded his attention and his eyes focused on the canine creatures slowly in the bright light.

He tried to respond to their growls, but only managed to induce a fit of coughing at first. "Where am I? What is going on?" Vincent managed to choke out in Elali.

The canine creatures do NOT have weapons with them - they are unequipped, as you are. Four other cylinders are open - near the canines - while the remaining tubes are empty and don't appear to have had anything in them to start with.

Vincent, you do not have a concealed dagger in your arm. They were... uh... THOROUGH in searching you.

Depends how "Common" works here. It is supposed to be slightly different for each world, but I don't know how our GM wants to handle it. We could all speak dialects that are understandable to each other. But none of us have tried speaking in "Common" yet.

The three of you share a common tongue. I'm noticing limited backgrounds thus far, and it might make sense if you're all from the same planet after all, even if you didn't know each other prior to the start.

The canine creatures seem actively hostile towards the three of you - there's a definite pack mentality here, but underneath it, they also seem rather frightened. They don't seem to know anything more than you do, in a rather literal sense - they're like no creature any of you have seen before.

Worse, your attempts at communication didn't seem to be getting through to them - there was no sign at all that they understood you, and the four of them prepared to lunge forward.

Yep, basic, non-improved, unarmed strike. The Quadsmasher...most two-armed species defense can be overwhelmed by striking with more limbs than they have :)...but yes, I provoke doing so, and it's nonlethal. Apologies for being unspecific.

Growling, the canine creatures rushed forward - and the one right in front of Phai snarled and snapped at her hand as she lashed out.

Ah, yes, that doesn't provoke. *Thwaps rulebook* Stupid rules that don't come up often enough in my games... >.> Well, it missed anyway, so there's that.

Vincent winced from the vicious bite and passed his hand over the wound, causing it to begin to stitch together.

    Lay on Hands: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Hoping to force the hounds back away, he tried to cast a spell once more...

    Cast Defensively, DC 17: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

but lost his focus at the last moment.

"Get back you beasts!" he cried. Turning to the four-armed duo next to him, "I can't cast spells with them right on top of us like this."

Though Ooran's blast missed, Phai was able to punch her target again, and it let out a whimper as it pulled back. That left just two of the canines, whose noises were definitely starting to sound a little nervous. They hadn't given up quite yet, though, and the remaining two bit out at their targets.

Growing frustrated with his continued failure to cast, Vincent decided to go with the more direct approach and took a swing at the creature to his left.

    AoO vs Vincent: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

The creature by Vincent completely failed to strike him as the (mostly untrained) warrior struck out - and Vincent punched it under the jaw a moment later, dealing a fairly solid blow. Another one like that would probably knock the creature out, and it barked a question at the only uninjured one. It growled... but the two of them carefully withdrew. They still weren't friendly, exactly, but they were clearly nervous about continuing the battle, and didn't seem like they wanted to press the issue.

With the creatures moving to either side, the way to the... door? Was it a door? Well, it was a distinctly different wall, at least. The point was, the path to it was open.

    cryptic 3 // warder 3 // guardian 1 | HP: 47/47 | AC: 19 / T: 15 / FF: 17 | Fort: +5, Ref: +6, Will: +7(+0) | M. Atk: +5, R. Touch: +5 | CMB: +5, CMD: 20 | Init: +2, Perception: +9(+2)

Ooran watches as the beastial creatures separate and give the trio their space. "We must move as one. They may close and trap us between." Glancing around the room, his eyes land upon what appears to be the only way out. "That is our path. Shall we see if we can get out of here?" He gestures towards the opposite wall.

  • Are the canine humanoids also covered in the gel that we are, or are they relatively dry?

    If they are gelled up:
"Just a moment. It looks like these creatures may have been caught up by the same thing that trapped us here. Maybe they were just caught up in defending their pack and guessed that we were responsible? Perhaps if we were to show them a kindness, they might be a bit friendlier?

"Actually, now that I think of it, what happened? I remember that I've been traveling around, hopping from one transport to the next, but it's kinda hazy towards the end. Name's Vincent Riker. Don't think we've met properly, but I can't really recall how I ended up in that tube over there either... Any idea where we are?"

Regardless of the above, I'd like to move slowly, speak calmly and try to express to the dogmen that I don't intend to harm them. If they seem like victims like us, we may want to try to heal them and possibly try to communicate, otherwise, just give them a respectful difference as we approach the door.

    Diplomacy to put the dogmen at ease: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

    HP: 37/40 | AC: 20 | Fort: +8, Ref: +8, Will: +8 | Hero Points: 3/3 | 25 feet speed | Perception: +6 Active Effects: none

"I'm Phai, Phai Kareen. I'm an...explorer, of sorts. And I remember nothing about how I ended up here. I'm fine with trying to communicate with these creatures, but in case they merely attempt to attack us again, lets choose a better spot in the room for doing so..."

Suggesting we move to lower right corner, with either of you in the corner(spellcasting/ranged touch attacks...even if I am hurt most it makes sense), and 2 of us covering next to you...i moved us in tactical display, feel free to undo if no interest.

In position, Phai would look at her comrades, and the nearby canine creatures, then do a few complicated hand gestures as she tried to connect with the local stream of life.
Channel energy: 1d6 ⇒ 5, affecting ONE of the canine groups as well(the right-hand-one).
This is assuming Vincent is right, but considering they are in a similar situation, I expect that. Guards or the ones responsibly would likely have equipment-

Ooran considers his options. "Sorry, old habits, we can attempt diplomacy if you wish. I am Ooran Thaal. I don't know where we are or how we got here. I used to be a gladiator. I think we may be in a holding pit. It is a bit strange though."

"Thank you for the healing. I think I can get us out of here once we get to the door. Give me a few moments to collect myself. "

He closes his eyes and concentrates for a while.

Taking two full-round actions, one to get psionic focus and one to ready combat maneuvers.

As the burst of power came out of Phai's hands, all of the canine creatures suddenly growled - and the close ones darted left before the burst reached them, apparently not wanting to touch it. They were definitely wary.

Now that you're no longer in immediate danger - just close - you're able to look around the room a little more thoroughly. The ceiling of this chamber is about fifteen feet high - the walls look and feel like expertly-carved stone, but are oddly warm and have the slightest amount of give when touched. The main source of lighting in the room comes from the intact, empty tubes, with glow with enough luminescence to provide normal lighting throughout the chamber - there are no other sources of light here.

    HP: 37/40 | AC: 20 | Fort: +8, Ref: +8, Will: +8 | Hero Points: 3/3 | 25 feet speed | Perception: +6 Active Effects: none

Noticing there's 8 tubes, but only 4 of those creatures, and 3 of us, Phai would take a look at the eight cylinder, trying to figure out if someone was held there, too. She is careful not to move too far away from the others.
"A holding pit? What sort of holding pit? Gladiatoral ones? Would they not provide weapons for such sport?", she muses towards Ooran, while inspecting the cylinder.

Thinking back to his own unpleasant past, Ooran answers, "Often they will release us unarmed into the arena. Providing weapons for us to fight over in strategic places where the audience can watch."

Watching the other creatures huddle together just like the three of them, Ooran decides they must act. "We should move to the door. Those things may decide that they outnumber us and some injuries would be worth no longer fearing us."
