  • "Well then. I'm all for self improvement, but capture and forced modification is never acceptable. I've seen first hand a glimpse of the jagladine operations, and it's not something I can stomach continuing. I can't speak for anyone else here, but if there's something I can do to rescue someone being held by the jagladine, I'm willing to help. Do you know anything about where Relstanna is being held?"

"Held by them?" The Elves composure collapsed for a moment, and he looked away. "I was not aware that was the situation. I would suggest...haste." Rubbing the mark of his own experiment, he added, "Great haste."

"So... what, Lomrick's experiments might trigger a Jagladine invasion of Argose?" Child-of-Planes asked. "Sure, it's a bit of a leap, but... there's a motivation to get involved if I ever heard one."

Having silently absorbed all that was spoken(seriously, I'm gone a day and you flood the thread :) keep going), Phai speaks up:"I know little of the Jagladine..or Hegemonys, Principalities and what not. All of this...it sounds big. So much bigger than us. Normally, I'd say goodbye and head home. Only I have no idea how to get home, and unresolved business with Lomrick. As such, my path seems pretty clear. If those with more experience on these matters advice haste, then I'd second that..."

"Fixing a gate wouldn't do much if we could just shut it down again." Kaetrix noted. "The broken gate here in the city is watched 24/7 just to be totally sure. I think they have the whole place rigged to collapse on top of it, too... if they thought they could repair any broken gates, though, they really might send a klaven army into the city, even at the risk of angering Torgrimm..." she rubbed her chin. "All right. I'll take whatever help I can get, and this needs to be resolved fast." With that, she named an address in the city - a mansion of sorts where Lomrick was probably residing. She did now, however, volunteer to join you in going there - instead, she planned to call on some other allies and do whatever she could to disrupt any klaven reinforcements that might be sent to the mansion at the first sign of a disturbance.

"Details would be appreciated. If you intend to disrupt reinforcements, would it make sense to try and sneak in, keep hidden as long as possible, also to keep safe Relstanna? I mean, do they expect someone to try and come for her? They could use her as a bargaining chip if so - which would put us at a disadvantage, would it not?", Phai added to Plany's question.

"Are there any other powers that might be a position to grant us aid?" Isen paused for a moment to drink, and added, "Religious groups, merchant orders, even technically criminal groups might be useful against the Jagladine."

Kaetrix didn't seem to have much information on the side of the inside of the building - no surprise, really. How you chose to enter would be up to you - she was clearly willing to let you go with whatever you felt would work best. It was unclear whether or not they'd be ready, so it was probably best to err on the side of caution and assume they were. The city's authorities would not be in league with Lomrick - they had little love for the Ultari Hegemony to begin with, but there wasn't much of a city watch, either. The Auditor's enforcers mainly concerned themselves with matters of trade, leaving it up to individuals to protect their own homes. Plus, without solid proof, they were unlikely to act.

The other groups of the city were more hesitant to act - most didn't want to actively anger the Hegemony if it didn't start interfering with them first, and it had to be admitted, your tale was a bit of a tall one. More likely, you'd be laughed off... and if Relstanna did know something, there was no telling how long she could hold out. If the information was collected and delivered to the Hegemony, there'd be no stopping its distribution throughout their organization.

I would suggest we try and stay out of sight as long as we can, before things get ugly. The closer we get to our mark before they realize we are there, the less time for them to react.", Phai replies, heading a few steps towards the address given, before holding for a moment, looking back:"Coming?"

Getting to the home in question didn't take particularly long.

A well-worn path leads to this two-story, stone dwelling. Two decorative columns flank a small stoop before a massive wooden door indicating the home’s main entrance, and a 15-foot balcony looks down from above. The front door is almost certainly locked.

  • "I suggest we take a look around first, to check for any guards, see if there are other entrances, any lights on and such. If we don't find them, I would guess that there are likely to be traps or wards of some kind if Lomrick regularly detains people here, so let's be careful in our approach if we can," Vincent whispered as he walked the perimeter of the building.

There were two more entrances in the back - one heading into the east wing, and one heading into the central, both going through a small garden. These seemed to be the only other entrances - the windows were too small to permit passage. Of course, breaking in through any door was still going to be illegal, something paragons of virtue might need to keep in mind...

  • Yeah, I'm a bit torn. Busting into someone's house based on a tip from someone we just met seems pretty thin reasoning, though cross-examining every person we met can bog down gameplay for months in a play-by-post. With what we know, the "legitimate authority" here doesn't really bother with what happens to individuals as long as it doesn't interfere with trade, so that part should be ok. If the info is good, a later part of the paladin code requires me to help innocents, and if this is Lomrick's house and he's holding someone against their will there's a pretty high chance that that person needs our help. If no one else does anything, I'm likely to scan the building with detect magic and detect evil to see if I can pick anything up on "radar" then end up knocking on the front door and talking to someone.

"Right," Child agreed. "Let's do this the fun way." The "armor" of his gauntlets and boots shifted, turning to sticky mud, and he proceeded to climb up the side of the building, peeking into whatever windows he could.

    Climb (speed 20'): 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (11) + 15 = 26

Phai sees Vincent hesitating, and approaches him:"Hey, no doubting. The guy who own's this manse had us kidnapped and would most likely have had us killed if not for our prowess. He's a criminal, a villain, and he's holding someone else in there, most likely. Wether the kitty is right or not, if this place belongs to Lomrick, it's our right to get in there and find answers. HE started this. We are merely aiming to end it. Whatever happens on the road there is his fault, not our burden...right?"

The way I see it, it's a special situation: First, the hostage may be in danger unless we work underhanded. Secondly: We KNOW this Lomrick guy is a murderous villain. You don't go knocking on their door and asking if they have time for battle, you barge in and smite them where they stand.(unless your specific code tells you something different). I mean, imagine the guy just kidnapped a bunch of kids he is sacrificing in his cellar. Is the Paladin supposed to wait outside because he'd be breaking into a private home, doing something illegal? ^_^

  • Eh.... it's more of a "don't know for sure that this is his place, that someone is being held against their will or the people we'd find would even be aware of it. SWAT teaming a building is cool if we've got reliable information to go on, but right now it's a bit suspect.

And I wouldn't go asking for battle =P. I'd talk to them, getting a look inside, judging their character and if they're nervous, and potentially give the sneaky types a chance to sneak in undetected. Also... if the opportunity presented itself, I could try to hit whoever answers the door with a Charm Person, though my spells are unreliable at best.

Aye, I understand that. Just saying it's the best lead we have, we know if this is Lomricks place he's a bad guy, and have spotty information about there possibly being a hostage- which should make things fine. "SWAT"ting a building on suspect information if doing a more regular approach would endanger potential hostages is EXACTLY what we should do! ^_^

Let me know when you've made a decision. o wo/ Incidentally, I tend to judge Paladins pretty leniently as long as you're focused on doing good. I'm not the kind of GM who tries to make Paladins fall for the lulz, and my personal interpretation of Paladins is that while they genuinely care about and support the law, they're ultimately going to choose what's right if there's ever a true conflict. Busting down the doors wouldn't be an issue here. XD

  • I'm with you on that interpretation, it's just the lack of convincing evidence gives me pause. Once things start going I'll be right there in the thick of things, just the idea of busting into an innocent's house makes me uneasy, so I'm not exactly going to lead the charge on this one.

As far as climbing went, there were two balconies on the second floor (one in front and one in the rear - the latter of which was closer). As Child-of-Planes ascended, however, he could hear the sound of a door opening and closing. The bad news was that he wasn't yet high enough to see onto the balcony - the good was that he could probably try to stay hidden if he really wanted to...

    By bad! In that case...

Child-of-Planes dismissed his armor, clinging onto the wall through strength for a split-second before reforming it in its thinner form, still sticky.

    Climb to hold on: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
    Stealth to descend: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
    Climb to descend: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31

Child climbed back down, quietly, and returned to the group before re-forming his armor. "There's a lookout, on the roof," he explained, "And I'm not channeling stealth today. I didn't want to risk too much sneaking."

Isen considered thoughtfully for a few moments. "If we enter, I would suggest a non-lethal approach, and the purchase of such gear as needed to make that work. We have no idea if the people inside are party to his plans. And if we're wrong...well, breaking, entering and assault is a hefty enough list without adding murder."

*Stares at those rolls for a second* XD

Very carefully, Child-of-Planes descended back down and managed to safely escape the notice of whoever was up on the balcony above - having had more good fortune than anyone had a right to expect. Ultimately, you needed to get in there (and sooner would be better than later, given the distraction apparently going on right now), but you might be able to quickly find a few mundane supplies in a nearby shop...

Yeah, I really used my natural 20s wisely.

"I can climb, I can be stealthy, and I have those...that's as non-lethal as things will be-", Phai displays some blunt arrows.
"The question remains: how do we enter? We do need to hurry while the distraction is ongoing..."

  • Vincent led the group away from the mansion and down a side alley. "Phai, I have an idea to maybe verify that we have the right place. I can cast a spell that will give you a glimpse into recent events, people talking or traveling, that sort of thing. It will only be brief flashes, but if you concentrate on something you might be able to glean information about a specific topic. Keep an eye out for anything about the whereabouts, capture or detainment of Relstanna. While you're at it, if you can, try to learn anything about this mansion, and any rumors of misdeeds, and if this is indeed Lomrick's house.

"You'll have only about 30 seconds to sift through the sounds and images, so stay focused and try to learn as much as you can. If we can verify that she was taken here against her will, we can try a rather direct approach, perhaps charming anyone that answers the front door. If that doesn't work, we can fight our way in to extract her."

When Phai was ready, Vincent stowed his shield and attempted to focus on his spell.

    Spell Failure (15%): 1d100 ⇒ 89

Vincent tapped into his inner reservoir of power and his hand left a blurry trail floating in the air for a moment. He reached out and touched Phai's forehead and Phai's sight went black before the vision took hold.

Phai, hearing Vincents plan, first casts Heightened Awareness, before diving into the stream of information.
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 10 + 2 = 29 //whereabouts of Relstanns
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 + 2 = 27 //capture of Relstanna
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 = 14 //trustworthyness of Catrix
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 10 + 2 = 26 //information about the mansion
    Perception: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 2 = 18 //Lomricks whereabouts

I'll let Vincent pick, it's his spell and he'd probably brief me on the priorities before casting. - I just put the things he worded in the rough order. I think detainment is similar to whereabouts, and substituted the question regarding Catrix(who could play us for fools for all we know). And out of personal desires, That final question is about Lomricks location, rather than wether it's his mansion(I think that is covered in question 4, anyway). Still, only a rough draft, I want Vincent to state a "go-ahead" before locking those choices in.

    *Waits for that* o wo~

  • Those all look fine to me. My biggest concern is determining if Relstanna needs rescue, and we're in the right place. The rest of the stuff is nice info to have, but not as important to me as if someone is in danger and needs help.

Hundreds of flashes of information surged through Phai's mind in a complicated mess of images - but throughout the chaos, a few details could be observed. Nobody seemed to know the current location of Relstanna - she hadn't been seen in several days, and her species wasn't especially common in town to begin with. Lomrick, likewise, hadn't been seen - although Jagladine weren't very popular on Argosa to begin with and generally didn't show themselves regardless. While people hadn't gone into the mansion - no surprise there, and the odds of getting a floor plan from talking to others had been terrible to begin with - they had occasionally seen Klaven on patrol.

Kaetrix was a little more well-known. In fact, she had quite a few connections throughout the city, and they seemed to think well of her on the whole. She'd been known to go out of her way to help the unfortunate, and while she was pretty good at gathering information, she didn't seem to use it in a criminal way.

  • Vincent listened to Phai's report and nodded. "If she had been captured, I didn't really expect to get much. Kaetrix sounds like she is trustworthy as well. Unfortunately, I'm not very stealthy, so unless you guys have a good idea to get into the building, I'm still leaning towards just going up to the front door and seeing if anyone will answer."
