The spirits tap into Taka's soul. The spirit of the oni offers no help as he flees for a moment. A few seconds later he regains his composure and heads back to his allies.

"Yes, I... felt something as well." Aleksson followed Shutai's gaze, hoping she saw something he hadn't.


Correct - it's a fear effect.

In the time between the screams and when Taka was able to regain his senses enough to return, the faces and the blood on the walls had vanished, leaving no sign (magical or otherwise) that they'd ever been there... although there was no telling how long it would be before they came back. Staying here for a long time might not be the best plan...

With the haunting still in mind, Shutai headed for the double doors to the South West of the room, pausing to listen through them before opening.

In response to Taka's impatience, Aleksson offered Shutai a slight shrug and a raised eyebrow. He kept his eyes peeled for trouble.


This chamber reeks of rotten food and bird droppings. A long dining table sits in the middle of the room, heaped with partially eaten animal carcasses and several thick eggshells.

"Several, guarding the gates and helping the Red Man." Shutai poked around, looking for anything valuable or helpful, but didn't expect to find much in this wreckage.

Cloak masking his face against the gagging smell, Aleksson helped dig through the contents of this room. The people of his native Huldin tribe rarely stayed in one place long enough to hold onto food this rotten.

There was really nothing in this chamber except filth and trash - and quite a lot of doors. This seemed to be a main connecting room for this level of the castle, and had passages to numerous other areas.

Moving to the most northern door in the chamber, just to the left of the doudble doors they had entered by, Shutai pressed an ear against the wood to see if there was any noises on the other side.

The door opens up into a short half-circle hallway that leads back to the main chamber you'd just come from. There were two doors in the hallway, each leading to the north - bedrooms, apparently.

In the right-hand room, filaments of white, fibrous mold grow all along the walls and across the bunk beds, giving the room a foul, musty stink. Here and there, thicker mounds of fungus grow in nauseating colors.

In the left, several bunk beds lean precariously against the walls in a
cramped chamber.

Shutai examined the mold room, hanging back a little. She'd heard rumours of some molds which were quite dangerous, and didn't have the knowledge to determine if this was one of them, but she could see if the stuff was magical at least.

Taka stands and watches on as the others search.

"This is nothing but trash and rot. We will not find what magic binds my sister here."


Probably not, although there did seem to be bodies under the lumps of mold, and Aleksson found a cleverly hidden niche in the eastern wall behind a loose brick, where someone (probably a servant) long ago stashed several stolen pieces of fine silverware. They were worth about 100 GP in total, and if the letter from Rokuro Kaijitsu was anything to go by, they probably belonged to the Kaijitsu family...

"More dead," Shutai murmured. The tale of this place's attack was still here, etched into the stonework and in the remains. It was clear enough that a major assault had taken the fortress, but who and why remained a mystery. "I know it is difficult," she added to Taka, "But we do not know what has caused this. Any clue might be invaluable. We cannot afford to rush in case we rush by the cure."

Unless something else appeared, she moved to the door in the western wall, just south of the exit of the looping corridor, and repeated the usual door opening procedure.

I assume the only reason I'm not effected is she is older. If she succumbs and dies perhaps I would fall into slumber as well. I don't wish to see that happen. Now lets move."

Taka tries to show as much patience as he can, but the spirit of his ancestor is strong and seems to control even how he speaks in this form.

Suffering carelessness for quickness will result in death for both, thought Aleksson. Though he stayed quiet, his frustration was written plainly on his face as he gave Taka glares with every shared eye contact (he didn't notice he did this).

Busying himself with the task, Aleksson followed Shutai and checked his surroundings as much as possible.

A dull thudding sound is the only result as Shutai tries to open the next door - it's clearly stuck. However, Aleksson did hear something from inside... and it sounded like a child sobbing.

Without being able to open the door, Shutai stepped back, looking at the others. She had not the strength to open a door like this at the best of times...and this was far from her best.

"There's someone inside. Young. Crying," Aleksson relayed, then considered. "Which is unlikely. Be watchful, likely a spirit or worse. Taka, might you force the door for us?"

"A child? Here? You are right Aleksson. Unlikely. Another spirit perhaps, yes I will try the door."

Best I can do is a 24 on a Str check so if that makes it assume taking 20. Kicking the door multiple times before it give way :)


After a couple of minutes and a whole lot of noise, Takamatsu finally managed to hit the door hard enough to shove it open. Inside, you can see that although this storeroom may have once been well organized, the fallen crates and broken barrels that fill the room now present a tangle of debris. Several bits of that debris swarmed upwards as you entered the room, forming into what looked like the skeletal body of a small child, but with a fox's skull for a head... and the sound of sobs intensified as the strange creature began to lumber forward.

While that sound is present, everyone has a –1 penalty on all attack rolls, damage rolls, and Will saving throws.

Flamed characters leaped out to his allies, emboldening their attacks even as they were moved by the creature's sobs. I know these cries, recalled Aleksson. These are the cries of a child whose father has died - and not with dignity. Drowned in the river, or trampled in a stampede.

May your sad spirit rest now, hoped Aleksson, as he put an arrow to flight past Taka.

Aleksson's arrow missed cleanly, and the sobbing creature tottered forward before whirling around at Taka and snapping out with its bony jaws.

Hmm, messed that up last time. I got tidal blade LAST turn, and get eldritch shield this one. All's kosher I guess. And yeah, I intend to bug you fairly promptly, but I knew from my other game that Taka was on vaca-y anyway, so it didn't seem urgent. :-)

With a grunt, Shutai shifted forms into that of an orc, hoping to negate the worst of the damage the poison had done. While her form rippled and changed, she moved behind the creature, hoping to flank it.


Aleksson's blow struck cleanly - Taka's did not, and the creature lashed out at Shutai with one hand as she passed, looking like it still had plenty of life... or unlife, at least... left in its body.

Unfortunately for it, she was able to dance around his hand and take up a flanking position, and it whirled around for a quick combination attack, clearly trying to drive her out of the flank.

Shutai's first blow struck the crying creature - or maybe 'nicked' was a better word, given how shallow the strike was. Takamatsu's blade came down hard a moment later, dealing rather more damage even as Aleksson set his body on fire. The creature's cries got measurably louder, and it stepped away from the flames (seeming a bit nervous about them) before lashing out at Taka.
