"You will NOT! Have you stopped considering, you brash, gallivanting, arrogant scoundrel, that she may take offense at the method of her induction, even though she would accept it? Have you never faced a woman with enough self-respect to want to make her own choices? Because if you force things on her because you think it'd be good for her..."
Beatrice's rage is almost tangible. "Well, I hope you see where this analogy leads."

Beatrice laughs. "Relax, child. None force me into anything I am not ready to do. Not without ruing it." She cocks her head at the others. "I will say that you are the only ones not intimidated by me so far. I am not sure I believe these tails of world engines and angels. However, I have encountered one other who had unnatural powers. He was raving mad and full of himself. He met a sad end. Now then, perhaps if you wish to talk, actuallly talk, then perhaps it would be better told over drinks?

Jebat laughs at Beatrice's rage and shakes his head. Then, he arches an eyebrow at Khatef, "Suitor? Patron is the word that would be appropriate."

Then, the captain smiles at Listrana, "M'lady, we're on our way to a prince's palace. He will have plenty of drinks and food for us. We're attempting to keep a low profile here in the city to protect this one from assassins. But, all of her screaming might have blown that attempt. We really must seek refuge for her safety."

"I would be honored if you would join us and delighted to introduce you to the prince." He offers to assist Listrana inside the carriage.

Kostya looked more amused than anything else at some of the comments, but seemed willing enough to go along as you tried to explain things over a meal. His earlier attempt at ramming things through might have been a ploy for a quick resolution... or his feelings. Who truly knew the heart of another?

It was certainly true that your group was getting looks, though, not least because of your wide variety of ethnicities. (Granted, Vissio was fairly cosmopolitan and welcoming - still, you did tend to attract the gazes of those who were merely mortal.)

"I am unimpressed with princes and kings, I have served such my whole life. However, as a soldier and wanderer, free food for my people is nothing to turn down." She turns toward the far corner. "Attention! Fall in! Guard formation! Beware attack."

The half-dozen soldiers, 4 men and 2 women, immediately stand to attention in a perfect row and listen attentatively, then they gather up their already packed supplies, packs on their backs, and fall in around the group. They form a square, two paces out from the 5 godbound, shields drawn and hands on weapons. They are silent but focused.

Turning back, Listrana waves toward the wagon. "None shall pass while we guard." She puts a hand on her sword.

"Well, they may pass from this life... or pass out.. or pass gas in fear... or pass their bowels..." A voice pipes up from thin air.

Her hand slaps the sword at her side, and the voice breaks off.

Jebat looks around at the half dozen guards wondering how much he prefers being at sea. "Right. I can't vouch that your little army will be invited inside, but we can certainly get them fed and drunk."

"All aboard the carriage. I think we've done enough to entertain the locals."

He enters the large, closed carriage taking the most comfortable spot that he had previously left to Beatrice.

are we ready to move settings?

Yes, onward and upward.

The Dread Pirate Jebat who is currently disguised as a well-groomed middling merchant smiles and keeps his mouth shut. It was not the first time, he had faced an aggravated woman. And she wouldn't be his last. He stretches out and gets comfortable in the carriage.

Fortunately, for whatever it was worth, your trip to your latest destination was safe enough. Vissio was a fairly law-abiding place to begin with, and in the middle of the city, there weren't too many threats for people to worry about... and even fewer for things like carriages, truth be told, because most thieves didn't want to mess with people who were rich enough to actually hunt them down.

The Storm Captain | HP 14/14 | AC 4 | Hardiness 10, Evasion 12, Spirit 12 | Words: Command, Might & Sky | Committed effort: Sapphire Wings & Clouds Below

The carriage arrives at a sprawling walled compound. After a brief exchange with the gatekeepers, even Listrana's army are admitted. However, they are directed to camp near the inside of gate, so the guards can keep an eye on them, while the carriage continues toward the main house.

At the palace, servants assist the familiar Captain Jebat and his passengers from the carriage and escort them through first floor to the outside patico. Ignoring the sumptuous luxury of space and art, they find themselves outside again among divans, umbrellas, and buffets of food and drink. The major domo excuses his master's delay. In the meantime, he welcomes everyone to relax.

Jebat is obviously used to this experience heading straight to the food and drink. Then, he finds a comfortable spot in the shade and enjoys the food and wine. He makes no effort to provide any additional assistance to the godbounds.

While the group stands around admiring the scenery and getting their bearings, Jebat turns to Listrana, "Now that we have some privacy, we can talk freely. You see, the world was going to end. Some angel summoned the four of us somewhere to repair the world engine, which we did. Then, the angel returned us where we requested, which was on my ship. We sailed up here to Savona. And, we heard about you while docking in port.

"Kostya here, is getting cold feet about being in the new pantheon of gods and wants to return home. Since, if there are less than four us in the pantheon, the world ends. Which is why we're looking for a replacement. The angel did not mention anything about replacements, but Kostya is the god of invention, so he figured it out.

"You seem to want to make the world a better place, and your story sounds like what happened to us. So, we would like you to join our new pantheon. The main requirement is surviving, in order to keep the world from ending. We've started discussing what needs to change in the world but haven't decided on anything yet. I personally don't like slavery or the Empire, but we need more than our divine powers to change those two things.

"This palace belongs to the merchant-prince Girolamo Riario. He knows about my powers, and I trust him to do what interests him. So far, our interests have fortunately aligned. It's a relatively safe place, since Beatrice over there is hunted by assassins called the Razors. Girolamo probably has information on them, since they are Vissian.

"I think that about gets you full speed. Did I miss anything important?" Jebat now looks at Beatrice, Khatef and Kostya.

Listrana instructs her followers to guard the room, standing outside the entrances, two per entrance if possible.

Then she enters, taking off her cloak and hanging it up. The cloak had hid the full plate she wears. She takes off her gauntlets and helm, placing them on a shelf near the door. Her long red hair flows freely, and she uses a handkerchief to wipe the blood from her cheek. "Sorry about that, it tends to bleed when I get annoyed." She then places her sword and sheild on the same coat rack her cloak is on.

"Hey, I want to be in the conversation!" The sword complains, earning it a slap.

"My apologies, ever since I woke up, my sword has begun talking aloud, rather than just in my imagination. It was much politer before my death." She then listens to the pitch. "Hmm, I would think you mad, had I not seen my own arm regrow after being ripped off by a demon." She holds up her right arm, stretched out, and a blood red sword flickers into her hand, it's edge glittering in the light.

"Hey, you know I hate that!" The sword complains, as it's laid across her lap.

"I do not understand this talk of world engines or pantheons, but I do understand the concept of the gods not being there anymore. It makes a certain amount of sense, given the demons invading our world. Did they die, or did they just decide to quit doing their jobs?" Her tone indicates she would prefer they be dead, but that she believes they just stopped doing their jobs. "And we are to replace them, to keep things working?"

"You know about as much as we do, now." Khatef says, picking up a piece of unfamiliar fruit and giving it an experimental bite.

"We don't seem to have to DO anything to keep the world together, we just have to BE. Though I think what's implied there is that the gods no longer 'be', otherwise we wouldn't be needed to fill the gap."

"I wouldn't jump to that conclusion. If a guard goes to a whore house instead of standing guard, he hasn't ceased to be, he's simply left his post. If he's replaced with another guard, that is just standard and needed. I would suggest that assuming the gods are no more is as dangerous as assuming we are the only ones like us. For now, if this is all we know, it is better to assume the gods have left for some reason, and may be back, and may not take it well that they are being replaced. They always struck me as rather petty, honestly."

Now that constructive conversation begins, Jebat focuses on the food and drink. You sense that there are two dishes and one type of wine that he particularly enjoys. Me makes two more trips for refills before settling into his divan with his feet propped up.

He closes his eyes and looks almost as content as when you saw him close his eyes aboard ship.

Clad again in her scenic clothes, Beatrice gapes, mouth wide open, at the abundance of artwork on the walls. Still slightly unused to the figurative arts, the beauty surrounding her, the unparalleled craftmanship of the Vissian painters and sculptors, including the same hand who once had painted her own face. Lost in contemplation, she almost misses the first half of the conversation.

"Well, I asked scholars around, there are stories about what happened. It's hard to say how much is truth and how much is legend, but here's the most likely story."

Clearing her voice, the singer spreads her arms, the constellations on her starcloak casting shifting, silvery light as she begins weaving a tale with her sweet voice.
"Long ago, the world was blessed. Man could wield the overwhelming forces of Theurgy, the High Magic the legends of yore tell of. The land was bountiful, peace and harmony were found in all of Arcem, disease and suffering were forgotten. But Man grew proud, and sought to reach the throne of the Gods, so they bent the forces of magic to rise, and rise again, towards the Heavens."
"But as they finally arrived to the Throne, they found it empty. They cried out in blasphemous laughter, the fools! No Gods hold sway over our lives, or they fear us! Man is the true God! And we shall grow ever more powerful, that the World itself may bow before us!"
"Theurgy was a force of life and creation, a force for good. But Man, drunk on hybris, corrupted and twisted it, clawing at the divine power holding together the world, used it to craft unholy abominations, the Made Gods. Only when the Made Gods went mad did Man see the error of its ways, but it was too late, the world was broken, and the own rules of nature started crumbling, and still they crumble, until we manage to fix what we once broke."

Taking a breath and returning to her usual speech pattern, Beatrice pours herself a glass of claret. "The rest is pure speculation, from the nature of the divine power invested in us Godbounds, to what should be done to fix the world. And if there ever were any Gods, something I doubt, should they come back, we would hardly be to blame for fixing what was broken."

"Right, that's interesting." Jebat replies to the story from Beatrice.

"So, are you joining us yet. Can Kostya give it to ya? Umm, in a nice way, of course M'lady."

"You think I would have suggested it if I couldn't?" Kostya asked, raising one eyebrow.

I don't really have any further input and it seems we've stalled a bit. Move forward?

At the silence, Kostya shrugged slightly. "Stand there." he said, pointing to the ground in front of him. He closed his eyes a moment later. "Each link to the machine responds to the will of the one who bears it. You need only reach inside yourself and draw it forth." he explained, putting a hand on his chest and drawing forth a sphere of light. "Of course, you can't simply throw it away." he added wryly, turning and making a pitching motion. Rather than flying through the air, the sphere simply stuck to his fingers. "That's one of the many safety mechanisms I built in. You can't pass a position to someone who's unable to take it, either. But if they meet all the criteria..." He held out the sphere. "You merely have to give it to them, and they just need to accept it."

Khatef is tired of the hemming and hawing and buttering up of their potential new recruit. After a long pause with no answer, he speaks up.

"She's too indecisive. If it takes her this long to formulate a simple yes or no, I don't trust her to have my back in a crisis in any case. Looks like you're with us for a while longer yet, Kostya." he says, dismissing Listrana out of hand.

Listrana looks at the group for a very long time. Yes, I apologize again, much much too long Then she nods. "I am not sure I believe all of your story, but it seems at least worth it to assume for now that you are telling the truth. If you are, then what is being done is vital. If you are not, then we will cross and burn that bridge when it occurs." She holds out her hand to Kostya. She shrugs at Khatef. "If you choose to do as this one says, then that is acceptable as well, it is up to you. I prefer not to leap into things without thinking it over."

Up to the group if they accept Listrana or not. If not, I'll leave or stick around as the group prefers.

As she says... it's up to the group. XD *Generally tries to avoid interfering in your decision-making*

"Well, helloo, my friends." A rich baritone voice with an elite Vissian accent greets the godbounds. Turning to see their host for the first time, they see a middle-aged Vissian with a tanned bald head with twinkling eyes and a flashing white smile.

"Captain Nadim, when you said you were bringing guests, you did not mention that one would be a celebrity! Ah, Beatrice Rucellai, you are as lovely as your voice." He kisses her extended hand in formal greeting and lingers as long as acceptable in Vissian culture. "I must apologize for my delay. When I realized that we hosted a famous Vissian, I had to change out of my pajamas." His clothes exude luxury and wealth with decorated silks and large, sparkling jewels and gold.

"I hope that you have been able to refresh yourself with food and drink. This patico is my favorite spot of the palace in the cool shade overlooking the fountains and gardens."

He circulates among the godbounds introcuing himself, "Girolamo Riario, pleasure to meet you."

Kostya snorted slightly at the interruption, curling his hand and drawing the orb back into his palm, where it disappeared. "One day, you'll understand why form should follow function." he muttered.

Jebat throws his pear pit at Khatef, "Don't be rude or insult my friend, Khatef. Mind your manners. You're free to walk back to the inn whenever you want.

"I brought us here for security, generous hospitality, and some Vissian insight. Maybe he knows something useful about the Razors. And this palace is large enough that Giro could give us privacy if we want. I've had enough debauchery here without him to testify." Jebat smiles wide enough for a pirate hedonist.

GM, if Giro knows anything useful about the Razors, please insert here.

The Razors are a fairly secretive organization, although their existence is fairly well-known, and they're not that hard to contact if you want to reach them. They are, after all, paid assassins. "Pick a goal, work towards it. You both said you hate slavery. We start there, since we seem to have hit a snag on the Razors for the immediate future."

DM, feel free to use Girolamo to answer those questions about the setting.

Girolamo blinked at Khatef's questions. "Well, most of the slaves are prisoners they took during battles with Dulimbai." he noted. "There's always a couple people encouraging emancipation for them, but that's mostly the young, idealistic ones. Most of the officials are too worried about a mass uprising among their sworn enemies to be willing to let them go. And there's a hell of a lot of them - all but the poorest families have at least one slave, and it's not weird for kids to get them as birthday presents. Call it, oh, three in ten as a rough estimate. There aren't as many actual traders as you might think, though, since most of the registration and transfers of ownership is handled by their government."
