Evening is falling as you travel along the King’s Road north of the Gaelon River. You are in the civilized hinterlands of the free city of Endhome but in an area where there are only sporadic farms and granges. You must start thinking about finding a place to stop for the night soon, and it doesn’t look like an inn or cotter’s loft is going to conveniently appear.

You are eyeing a few possible clearings among the sparse stands of trees that grow along the road when the wind shifts and brings to your ears the sound of dogs growling and fighting on the road ahead. Likewise the wind shift brings with it the unmistakable smell of spilled blood.

Glad that she had bothered getting a tent...and carrying a tent...and learning how to set a tent up, Opi was vaguely looking foward to camping out. If nothing else, she could usually rustle up a decent enough meal that was both warm and filled the belly, and because she cooked she could usually get out of the camp chores she didn't enjoy as much. Like washing plates. No one as small as she was should have to carry plates that were bigger than her own head.

At the smell of blood, however, she sighs a little. With a thought she called her staff into her hand with a popping sound, fingers firmly wrapping around the cool metal of the weapon. It was three feet tall - taller than opi herself, infact, even though she use it one handed - and a brightly buffed bronze in colour. Silver runes ran down it's length and a blue gem floated in socketed at the top.

It was, infact, pretty much the epitome of 'staff of ultimate desctruction' if you happened to look up what one looked like in a book, and Opi always felt a little giddy calling the tool of devestation to her hand like that. It made her feel like a true spellcaster.

With a glance at the others, she began heading towards the sounds of fighting, bare feet padding softly along the ground as she moved. As with most Halflings, Opi was pretty good at being unnoticed...until she wanted to be noticed, and then the explosions typically began.

Karlia had been riding along comfortably. While things were quiet she had been taking the chance to change basic features. Subtle things but none the less helping her learn to focus. Upon hearing dogs and smelling blood she would have her horse move with her halfling companion as she shifts her own form giving herself a set of claws.

She wouldn't leave them unprotected and if her companion was trying to be quiet, her on her big horse would at least cause more noise. She would pull ahead just slightly so the first target any potential hostiles would go after would be her.

Leandric had been confined to Minn's mind for the entirety of the trip. There were those that couldn't see the difference between him and a ghost so it tended to be easier to just leave him up there.

When she hears the sound of the fighting dogs she draws her blade. "Wonder what it is. Hopeful they're just fighting each other."

"Sounds of dog's fighting and growling. Could be possible but expect more trouble my friend."


The road tops a small rise and reveals a horrific sight below. The remains of a caravan lie strewn across the road and surrounding grass, men and horses butchered like cattle. Three wagons lie on their sides where they were tipped over, their contents strewn across the roadway. Blood is splattered everywhere from the where the victims were torn apart, and a cloud of flies buzzes over these crusted pools of crimson. Two gray wolves, unusual this far south of the Penprie Forest, growl and snap at each other as they fight over a bloody horse’s carcass.

Opi raised an eyebrow at the wolves. She remembered a druid she had known going on and on - at length - how wolves were typically majestic and powerful creatures that avoided dirty, nasty humans. Of course, Opi had pointed out that she wasn't human, and they avoided her too...

Still, she wanted to go down and check for survivors, and angry wolves would likely view a Halfling as 'snack sized'. She waited for the others, to see what they wanted to do, and to see if what they wanted to do was 'blow up a wolf'.


...Have the others decided to do nothing? That's an option, I suppose. XD Those wolves might see Opi as pretty edible, though.

Karlia would dismount once closer and looking at the other two she would ask.

"Can someone make me bigger?"

After she asked she would transform into a wolf also snarling at them warning them away.

"Can't help you there I'm afraid." Instead Minn drew her blade. It was small but would have to suffice for now. If they closed in she had another surprise for the beasts.

Anyone paying close attention to her could see a change to her eyes. For just a moment a pale blue film covered them wholly before it faded again.


The wolves didn't seem impressed by Karlia's transformation or snarls...

...and anyone who hasn't played with me before should check my profile for some important information about combat! And Minn, I need you to get your quick-reference bar up. Instructions for that are also in my alias. ^^ I use those a lot, so they're important.

Moving ten feet to get into range, Opi levelled her staff at the closer of the two animals and mentally focused on unleashing a strike on the beast. Collecting the magics at the staff's crystalline tip, she hurled a blast of raw force at the closest animal.

Minn stood there, blade at the ready. Right now the wolves were out of her reach but they probably move in soon. She hated not having any minions to send in and the wolves blocked the most easily available source.

She made a small gesture with her hand, which lit up a pale blue. Then she vanished only to reappear several feet closer to the toppled wagon, though still far from the wolves.

Standard Warp: Teleport 30 ft. Trying to get both closer to the wagon, preferably within 30 ft., and keep some distance from wolves, so likely moving diagonally. Moving behind some cover if at all possible.

Sorry for the slowness.


Opi's blast had power, but something about the wolves seemed to have startled her, and her aim went off at the last moment. The two wolves lunged at the halfling a moment later, clearly trying to rip into her from both sides.

Fortunately, their attacks had fared no better than hers... so she was safe, at least for the moment.

Opi sighed in annoyance and danced back a few feet away so she could re-aim her staff and try again. What was the point of having a doom staff if you couldn't aim it right?

Once she was in a better position she leveled the staff, humming tunelessly as she gathered power and fired...again. "Heel."

Karlia would close the distance with the wolf and puts power into her form to maintain it.

Since Opi had moved she couldn't attack them this round.

With the wolves near Opi Minn ran towards the corpses that laid on the raid, veering towards one of the horses. Once there she knelt down next to. Then she kissed her own hand, setting her hand alight with an eerie bluish white light. She then touched the corpse of the horse and the light sank into it's skull only to open it's eyes moments later. They were ablaze with the same odd light as it rose to it's feet.

Opi's blast struck one of the creatures, but wasn't quite enough to drop it - barely, though. Even as Minn called up a skeletal steed, the two wolves darted in at Opi, teeth glinting as they tried to bring her down.

Unfortunately for them, their attacks didn't seem to be going so well...

Opi shifted five feet back once again, and opened up with another blast of power. These hounds were being very awkward about this whole 'dying' buisness.

Karlia went after the once closest to death snarling as she lunged forward her teeth trying to clamp down on the neck. The smell of blood filling her nostrils and she couldn't help but reveal in the fact she was wearing a wolf's skin.

While the others were closer to melee with the wolves Minn stayed behind, eyes darting over the corpses and then back to the wolves. Would they need another?

Almost as an afterthought she called out to the risen horse to run and attack the wolves. It probably wouldn't be able to reach them but perhaps it's presence would unnerve the beasts.

Opi's blast easily took down her target - and Karlia bit into the second a moment later. Combined with the assault from Minn's undead steed, that was enough to badly hurt the remaining wolf, and it snarled as it whipped around at Minn.

Its jaws completely failed to penetrate her defenses, though, and the three of you were easily able to wrap up the fight and finish off your foe. You were safe for now, but the caravan here was still in ruins. You could, of course, try to track down whoever had done it - after all, if they'd hit one group, there was no reason to believe they might not try to hit more.

Raising her staff, Opi decided to keep renewing it as needed for now. Whatever had killed this caravan might still be nearby somewhere. Instead, she began to pick through the remain of the traders and there wagons, looking for anything significant or useful.

Sniffing around the place she started to look for the trail of who did this. Right now she couldn't talk as a wolf but she could at least sniff out what or who did this.

As Opi looks around, she eventually finds shows where a group of at least 12 booted humanoids and a half-dozen wolves waited in ambush under the trees. Meanwhile, Karlia's able to locate their trail through the trees where they departed to the south. There are surprisingly few bodies with the caravan... only two, which is definitely fewer than the number of people needed to drive so many wagons.

Moving back to the others, Opi reported, "At least 12 humanoids with poor choice in footwear and another 4 of the pups ambushed this lot. With so few bodies, I'm thinking slavers." Opi frowned slightly. She didn't like slavers much. They liked Halflings because their small size meant that they made good nannies and caretakers...and they were easier to control. And took less food, if you were sadistic, which people who owned slaves generally were. Space, too. All around, Halflings were good for Slavers, and therefore a very viable target to be exploded.

Karlia nodded and growled tossing her head towards the direction of the trail, her tail wagging as she cocked her head to the side to see if they would follow.

Grabbing the dangling reigns of her horse she would hand them to Opi before taking the lead and sniffing the trail and starts stalking it.

When her time runs out on her form she maintains it as she moves.

"We should proceed with care then." Minn walked alongside the undead horse, petting it as if it were alive and well. She left the walking corpse far enough away from the living horses so as to not cause them too much discomfort.

"All of you still in one piece? If not I'll patch you up."

Ended up being a little longer than expected but I'm back.

[b]"Nah, the doggies didn't manage to sink their teeth in." The little warrior-mage rapped her knuckles on the armour she wore. Taking the reign's of Karlia's horse, and vanishing her staff so she could manage her own mount, Opi followed along, keeping one eye out for any signs herself.

The trees grow thicker south of the road forming a lightly wooded area reaching to the river a mile away. Even as night falls, the tracks and blood trail left by the retreating brigands is easy to follow now that you've found the path. In addition, after a few hundred yards, the sounds of boisterous celebration can be heard. The camp is easily located a quarter mile into this lightly forested area.

A large campfire crackles ahead through the trees, great hunks of horse meat roasting on makeshift spits above it. Spits also hold smaller cuts of meat that look chillingly humanoid in nature. Seated around the fire in this impromptu camp are at least half a dozen grizzled brigands. This crew of cutthroats looks as if it has spent more time in the wild than in town, with dirty and disheveled clothing and equipment, long unkempt hair and beards — some streaked with fresh blood from a recent meal — and an eye-watering stench that you can smell over the smoke of the fire. Three wolves lounge among them, each gnawing on bones and bits of bloody gristle. The men do not appear to be alert, being more intent on drinking from the wooden kegs set on a nearby rock and chewing on bloody hunks of poorly cooked meat. Unmoving near the fire is the body of a man, stripped naked and bloody.

Looking at the man, Opi tried to see if he was still alive. She also took a look to see if anyone else was around. There had been more than man, surely? Unless that was where the blood on there face had come from...

"If we attack," she whispered to the others, "I'll speed you up. You'll be able to attack once more each few moments. It'll help deal with those numbers, hopefully. Can either of you boost us as well?"

"I actually think we shouldn't attack, at least not yet. They are drinking and soon they'll be drunk and much easier to take out. If I get Leandric out he can scout ahead without them seeing so we get a better idea of what's going on there." She waits for reaction. Manifesting the spirit from her consciousness will take time and leaves her unable to do much else so she'd need them to watch for any trouble.

"I can wait," Opi replied in a low voice, "But I'm not sure that guy out there can. I don't think we can afford to wait for them to get completely hammered."


From here, you couldn't tell whether or not the man was alive - you'd need to get close enough to touch him before that would be possible.

"We do have time to have Leandric take a closer look I think. Let me do that." She then starts to focus s the air begins to shimmer in front of her. The air in front of her seems to warp as slowly the familiar glow of her phantom appears until the being is manifested in full. It appears translucent, as opposed to the solid form the others have also seen before.

He then speaks, his voice wispy due to his form, "So check on the man by the fire and scout out the bandits. Shouldn't be an issue." As soon as he's finished the phantom sinks into the ground.

Leandric travels through the ground following the trail. He occasionally pops his face up over the ground to see what's there. He doesn't travel beyond 50 ft. at the moment as he needs to make sure Minn can come closer before moving further.

Opi waited for confirmation of whether the man was dead or not. Or if they should move forwards.

Karlia sniffed the air quietly and pointing at the wolves with her nose she would try to non verbally point out that they could scent them if they got to close.


Speaking of... please give me a stealth roll for Leandric. XD The wolves in the area can be quite observant, after all. More so than the brigands.

Hmm, we may've loss Minn. Well, I'll give it another day. Then... check the previous applicants, maybe?


From what the two of you could tell, the man wasn't dead yet. That was less of a problem then the fact that Minn had apparently had enough, and had bolted off instead of sticking around to actually attack a camp full of bandits. Survival instinct, maybe...? And yeah, the wolves might be a bit of a problem, but they were one you'd hopefully be able to handle.

Looking over at Karlia, Opi murmured, "Ready to go and be big damned heroes?" Gesturing to herself, she added, "Figuratively speaking."

Karlia looked at her and nodded thinking about how to trick the wolves. Their, and currently her ability to sniff out individuals was definitely going to hamper them.

And it wasn't like she could make herself smell as if she was in heat and draw out all the males away from the camp and knock them out there.

Sniffing the air she would jerk her nose toward the closest tree on their right and then use a paw to quietly scratch out an "H"

Pushing her head to the wolves she would put her paw on her nose indicating they could sniff them out if they kept quiet with the first on.

She knew when they started the attack she would make herself bigger if it was needed.

The attack might have started then, if it weren't for a rustling in the bushes behind you - it was a thin-looking man with brown hair, but more importantly, he didn't look anything at all like the bandits in front of you. He'd clearly had something of a bad time, and there were several relatively fresh-looking injuries on his body, but perhaps you weren't going to be so alone in this endeavor after all...
