Your hometown of Sandpoint is a quaint seaside settlement that periodically has problems with monsters, such as wicked goblins and hungry ghouls, but the citizens always manage to endure and survive. Lately, however, a far greater danger has come to threaten the town. A few weeks ago, livestock started to disappear from nearby farms. Sometimes a half-eaten corpse is found, sometimes only bloodstains. The people of Sandpoint are afraid, and mayor Kendra Deverin is growing desperate. She hopes some heroes will volunteer to search out this menace and put an end to it before it kills a person. She’s offered a reward of 1,000 gold pieces to the group that stops this mysterious creature. Although no one has seen the killer directly, a long black fang was found in one of the animal corpses, prompting the locals to dub the unseen killer “Black Fang.” You have decided to go on a quest to put an end to these brutal killings. Rumor holds that Black Fang is living in an old cave not too far from town, which has been used as a den for many monsters over the years. You’ve gathered your gear and are now approaching the entrance to this dungeon, but you still have a few moments to get to know your fellow adventurers.
Nezeth Macehand |
Of the group assembled the first to speak was the small dwarf dressed like a fishmonger.
"In all my years of living, I cannae remember any tale of Sandpoint as disturbing as this 'Black Fang.' ... At least, not a tale on the land... How did yew lot get involved in this anyway? Was it just fer the coin? Or is there something more?"
Lokhem Adalantia |
The second to raise his voice was a tall lanky elf dressed in dark tightly wrapped garments that gave him an ominous air, but one you still felt you could trust when absolutely needed.
"Well met stout Dwarf. What be thy preferred name? As to yer' question, well, for myself, being one who starved as a young lad, I wish to prevent any of these fair townsfolk from suffering the same fate on account of some mysterious beast! And I must admit that the intrigue of it all, this 'Black Fang', has piqued my interest to the highest degree. 'Coin' as you so referred to it, is of the least interest to me... I'm a rogue. If I wish to have more coin, I shall simply find the richest person around and help myself.
Now you too have piqued my curiosity. What did thou mean'st when thou remarked 'At least, not a tale on the land...'? And also, as for you, what art thou's motives in all of this?"
Nezeth Macehand |
"On the sea t'would be but a everyday occurrence of strangness with the beasts they encounter there. Some of these dark tales we hear on the docks. Iffin' you'd like tae know, I be called Nezeth Macehand by some; I also be called a strange wizard by others. I have come intae this here band out of an insatiable curiosity, being that I am a scholar of sorts; though I may not look it. And hearing this strange happening has led me tae believe there's magic afoot."
Lokhem Adalantia |
"T'would seem as though we are of similar dispositions then, Nezeth Macehand. And by the sounds of your name, I certainly hope that a mace in thy's hands never has reason to dislike me lest I meet an untimely end! What be'st thou's greatest area of study if thou should pardon my asking? Personally, I tend to enjoy studying the intricacies of all forms of nature, whether they be beast, vista, or phenomena!"
Valeros Bohr |
A man in scale armor stood by with his arms crossed, listening to the wizard and rogue. His arms were crossed in a jaunty manner and he was slightly tapping his foot.
"Magic, eh wizard? I've seen a bit of that. Now if you could magically fill my tankard while we're waiting for the rest to gather here that would be a blessin'!"
Taladriel |
A figure wrapped in a set of tawny hide armor steps away from his vantage point and his form detaches from the nearby tree. His hazel eyes scan the gathering adventurers. It seems a rather disparate group, but he had seen stranger in the streets of Absalom.
He decides to walk over and introduce himself. Light sparkles on a shield strapped to his pack as he strides over to the other individuals seeking to fulfill the Mayor of Sandpoint's contract.
"Greetings fellow hunters of the Black Fang. I am Talandriel, and with Serenrae's blessing I will see us all survive this foray," the lanky elf's hand goes to the wooden icon dangling from about his neck as he finishes his introduction.
Valeros Bohr |
Valeros belted a laugh and slapped Nazeth on the shoulder.
"Monster smarter than a wizard? Nah, you're just holdin' out on me."
He winked at Nazeth and with a slight sweep of his arm he pronounced to the company, "Valeros, adventurer, at the service of the Mayor of Sandpoint and this esteemed gatherin'. No need to be all morose about fightin' this Black Fang, once we've beat him the Sandpoint lasses w'llall be calmorin' to hear the tale!"
Nezeth Macehand |
Nezeth turned his gaze fully toward Valeros, Grinning.
"Aye, Valeros that be the spirit! But don't let it go to yer head!"
Upon the arrival of Taladriel, Nezeth faced the newcomer in a welcoming fashion.
"Welcome tae this little zoo we have for a hunting party, Taladriel, I hope yah feel at home!"
Adaram Kalantas |
"Oy," said Adaram, looking around at the group. "I be doown 'ere where de short ones stand. An' I be here fer de coin. Maybe we'll be findin' a few wee wenches in dere as well no?"
Winking at Taldriel, he said, "Well, I guess dere won't be any wenches fer ye tall pointy eared folk, but that'll leave more fer the rest of us eh? Dat be a noice 'oly symbol dere. Whar did ye get it?"
Adaram pulled the stopper off his flask and took a swig of ale, then belched and looked around at the group.
Kairo_ |
Kairo crouched near to the group, hood pulled low over his eyes, checking the draw on his crossbow while listening carefully to what the others had to say.
A wizard dressed as a fishmonger, a zealot, a common thief and a dwarf and a man who seem more interested in booze and women than the task in hand. Kairo rose to his feet once more, re-affixing his crossbow to his pack. Then again who was he to judge.
"Kairo, the coin is why i'm here" he said coldly as he stalked past the others towards the mouth of the cave. "Are we going to stand around and talk all day or shall we get this hunt underway?"
Adaram Kalantas |
"I fink I am gonna go and look at dat dere statue," Adaram stated. He slowly started moving towards the statue south of where the party stood.
Adaram walks toward the statue, slowly, sensing for danger. Perception check roll 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8. Please ignore this, Red, if I am doing something I am not supposed to be doing
GM Redelia |
At last! The dungeon is in sight up ahead! Its entrance looks
more like a cave than the front door of an underground
fortress. A curtain of thick, green moss hangs over the
entrance, hiding what lies beyond. Standing in front of the
entrance is a menacing old stone statue of a warrior.
Adaram looks carefully at the statue. Its exact features are too worn away by time and weather to be discernable.
The curtain of moss suddenly parts and a pair of small,
green creatures with melon-shaped heads and toothy
mouths charge out, swinging crude swords. These are
goblins, a common pest that lives in these hills. Howling
battle cries, they charge to attack!
OK, first step in a battle is everyone rolls for initiative. Your initiative is a roll of a d20 plus your initiative modifier. Then everyone takes a turn, highest initiative first. This first battle we will carefully stick to the written rules. In later battles we will switch over to some things that speed up battles in play by post games.
As the GM, I roll initiative for the bad guys. I will make them 'share a turn' so I only roll initiative once for both. Their initiative modifier is +6, so their initiative for this fight is:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
GM Redelia |
OK, initiative order is Valeros, Kairo, Nezeth, goblins, Lokhem, Adaram, Taladriel. Because this is the first battle, we'll be strict on that rule. Valeros, what do you do?
(Let me know if you have questions, of course. I don't know if you've figured out how this works from the book or not.)
Valeros Bohr |
Thank you, I'm losing my mind-type busy this weekend and read right over that about three times. Please let me know if I messed up my rolls.
Valeros draws his longsword and rushes past Taladriel to make the first strike. Gripping his sword with both hands he swings it down to slash at the goblin's face.
1d20 + 1 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 + 3 + 1 = 16
GM Redelia |
OK, almost right, Valeros. Your attack is 1d20+5 (which is why your character sheet shows an attack bonus of +5 for the longsword. Your damage, however, is 1d8+4, I'm not sure where the extra +3 and +5 came from.
Your attack of 16 is higher than the enemy's AC, so the attack hits.
You do 12 damage to the goblin close to you. The first goblin is knocked unconscious by your blow.
Next is Kairo.
GM Redelia |
If you've been carrying that crossbow around in your hand as you got close, then you probably already had it loaded. Also, you don't need to take that step back, you're far enough back before it.
Don't forget the -4 to your attack for firing into melee.
Yep, the space where the other goblin was is considered empty.
Kairo_ |
Ah sorry think i created a bit of confusion there, I asked the question then found the answer in exactly the same paragraph you referred Valeros to so deleted the comment and replaced it with my move so the position i'm in currently is where I would be after the step back, sorry about that. Here's my move again
If Kairo was surprised by the sudden appearance of the attackers he didn't show it. As Valeros felled the first of the ugly beasts Kairo took a deft step backwards and drew his crossbow. He aimed deftly down the length holding his breath to steady his aim. He fired.
1d20 ⇒ 14
I believe because the goblin hasn't acted in combat I can take it as a sneak attack. Ignore next roll if this isn't the case.Assuming I hit
1d6 ⇒ 6
GM Redelia |
Yep, Kairo, your attack roll is right (although for clarity most would write that as 1d20+4-4). You are right about the sneak attack.
The second goblin is also gone.
Good job, guys, you won your first combat, even if most of you didn't get to act.
Now that we're out of initiative, you don't have to go by turns anymore.
So what do you guys want to do now?
Kairo_ |
"Be at the ready there are bound to be more" Kairo warned the others as he lowered his crossbow and approached the mossy curtain. He paused when he reached it and listened carefully for sounds in the cave beyond.
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Adaram Kalantas |
The unconscious Goblin lay at Adaram's feet, right near the statue. "Oy look at dem skinny humans. Made short work of dem stupid Gobs!" Adaram pounds his Warhammer against his left fist.
"Anyone gots any reason fer me not ta just give dis 'ere ones head an extra wee poundin'?"
