Kehlysch |
Fort Save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Kehlysch snarls as the creature's claw bites into him. He jumps back (5' step),, and with a violent hiss, he spews a caustic stream of acid at the beast.
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 (acid)
Louly a'Maris |
As the surge of adrenaline from the sudden attack starts to fade, Louly shudders. I don't think I want to eat something that's smart enough to figure out how to try to eat me. Though I guess it doesn't feel the same way.
Pulling her club, she steps forward and swings at the creature attacking Gregor, cursing as she finds moving through the water difficult enough that it badly throws off her swing.
I'm assuming we can five-foot step; otherwise, move action to pull her club and then hold in case something comes toward her.
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
GM Rapscallion |
Moon's axe bites deep into the creature, though a shell already scorched and cracked where Louly's bomb had hit it. The creature immediately thrashes wildly about, lashing out with both claws and scoring hits on the man who had dared to kill it.
Kehlysch's warning proves true - 6 damage to Moon from its death throes; Moon - please roll 2ea. Fort saves DC13 or lose 1 and 2 strength, respectively
Gregor's strike slashes through shell and skin, forcing a milky white fluid to well up and flow out into the sea, clouding the water. The creature lets out a nearly serpentine hiss and refocuses its attention on its assailant.
Kehlysch's acid sizzles on the hardened exterior of the crablike creature, then seeps down into its skin, smoking and spitting. The creature whines loudly as it thrashes about, but it still stands.
Sandara smiles at Kehlysch's attack, her bright eyes gleaming with mischief. She seems to concentrate on a spell of her own, and a small figure of earth and stone appears between her and the reefclaw. It immediately attacks, its heavy fist slamming through the reefclaws shell to batter the flesh and organs underneath. Somehow, the reefclaw still stands...barely.
Ben and Moon are up, then I'll resolve Louly's action above and the reefclaws - note: 2 remaining, both hurt, and there's a handy little earth elemental standing in the shallows
Ben - 12
Louly - 11
Moon - 7
Reefclaws - 7
Gregor - 6
Kehlysch - 4
Bosun Moon |
Round 2, HP 4/10, AC 15
"Aargg, beware the death thrashing, it's right painful!" calls out Moon.
Fortitude Save 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Fortitude Save 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Moon loses 1 point of Strength, now at 12 Strength
Shift 5' to square just above Kehlysch and ready action to strike the beastie if it moves towards them.
GM Rapscallion |
The attach from Bendrauss finds a seam in the creature's cracked carapace, and it digs deep, forcing the creature to thrash about in a violent explosion of movement. Both of its claws slash at its killer, and one rips through the skin of Bendrauss's arm.
2 damage to Ben; Please roll a fort save DC13 or lose 2 Str
The remaining Reefclaw moves forward, lunging at Kehlysch. It obviously assumes that the small, earthen creature in front of it would not be good eating.
Moon - take your readied action, as it moves into range. Louly - feel free to redirect your action since Ben killed your target.
Kehlysch |
Kehlysch jumps back (5' step) and fixes the beast with a shark-eyed stare as it approaches.
"Fm'latgh grah'n," he growls menacingly. With another sudden hiss, he spits another jet of acid at the reefclaw.
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 +1 bless
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 (acid)
Louly a'Maris |
Well, that seems counterproductive... : (
Louly, her nearby target thankfully dead, shifts her grasp on her club and flings it across the water. Yes! she thinks as she sees it slam into the reefclaw, even if it seems to have mostly gotten shell instead of flesh.
I hope it floats, though I'm sure I can find another chunk of wood to use if I have to.
Throwing club, -2 for distance: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 - 2 = 20
1d6 ⇒ 1
GM Rapscallion |
Louly's club bounces off of the last creature's shell, forcing it to stagger slightly to the side with the blow. Moon's axe glances off the same shell without being able to bit in. The Reefclaw finishes its attack on Kehlysch with two swiping claws, which both rip through the man's flesh with ease.
Yeouch - 2 hits on Kehlysch - 3 damage then 2 damage - 5 total. Please roll 2 DC13 Str checks or lose 1 and 2 strength, respectively. As a bonus, you're now grappled. I think that makes you unconscious, so next up is Gregor
GM Rapscallion |
Gregor slams his blade into the back of the Reefclaw atop Kehlysch, his dagger blasting through its shell to bury itself to the hilt. The creature lashes out in its death throes, but lucky for Kehlysch, its claws threaten little but the shallow seawater.
All reefclaws dead! 300 XP; noted in the campaign thread. So...welcome to 2nd level! Please roll for HP in the discussion thread and upgrade your characters.
Sandara looks down in satisfaction, then her eyes go wide at the sight of their fallen comrade. Kehl! Hang on; I've got you. Indeed; she kneels down in the shallows and cradles Kehlysch's head in her lap, quickly uttering a prayer to her goddess.
CLW1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Kehlysch |
Warmth spreads through Kehlysch's body as he feels torn skin close and near-empty veins fill with new blood. He opens his eyes and looks up into Sandara's beautiful face.
"It's too bad that you brought me back. This seems like a wonderful place to draw a last breath." He gives her a mischievous wink, and places a hand over hers.
After a long moment, he rises gingerly to his feet and looks at the reefclaw that nearly killed him.
"Reefclaw is considered a rare delicacy is some seafaring circles. I wonder how our beloved captain would react to having this served to him tonight..."
Bosun Moon |
"Hells with eatin' them, the others can do that, but if we throw these beasties on the deck the captain will be pleased as an octopus and Scourge will be angry we succeeded again and that seems like a win-win to me." Moon hoists up one of the carcasses and readies to head back to shore, then stops and faces Sandara. "Of course, Besmara has the final word, will she be fine with us feeding these to the crew?"
GM Rapscallion |
Sandara's full lips turn up in a smile. The mistress of these seas believes that the depths take at will, but they also give back. Those creatures didn't hesitate to try and eat us, so Besmara would expect no less than for us to return the favor.
You can load 3 buckets with the Reefclaws and another bucket with crabs, if you like. There's a lid and a tie to keep them from falling out during the return trip. Anything else you'd like to do while out here on the reef?
Kehlysch |
"If I were in better condition, I would happily make a few dives to look for loot. As it is, I have very little strength left to defend myself should there be more of them."
He kneels down beside the reefclaw's corpse, and examines a monstrous claw.
"The venom in their claws could be useful. A weapon coated with it would have a similar effect. The poison might make someone too weak to, say, perform a keelhauling. Louly, do you think you could milk some of the poison?"
GM Rapscallion |
Being that you're already familiar with the creature, I'd say survival. We may need a craft check to apply it to weapons, as I'd assume the consistency would have to change slightly so it doesn't just ooze off of the blade
Both @ DC15; one roll for each Reefclaw, and Kehl can aid. Failure means that you burst the sac too early and the poison spills into the sea.
For applying to a weapon - you can take 20 if you do it aboard ship and take your time. Otherwise, failure would mean that you get the wrong consistency and it oozes right off the weapon and is unusable.
Each Reefclaw = 1 dose; Effect:Claw—injury; save Fort DC 13; frequency 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d2 Str; cure 1 save.
Louly a'Maris |
Ouch!
Louly curses as the sacs prove difficult to handle, though she may be able to get one of them with Kehlysch's help. Unless I can take 10? If so, that's an auto succeed
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
I'd assume we don't need to apply it to weapons at the moment.
Kehlysch |
Aid another, Survival:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
10+ = +2 to the check, so 2 successes, yes?
I'm sure it's been 3 rounds since I was clawed, so: FORT saves:
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Hooray! That first roll stopped it.
Kehlysch |
Oops. Looks like only one success, not two. Oh well...
As the group prepares to swim with their catch back to the Wormwood, Kehlysch takes a moment to address the group.
"Friends, none of us are here by choice, and none of us by choice would long serve under men such as Plugg and Scourge. We have all been acting on an unspoken goal to better our circumstances. I wish to take this moment to say it aloud.
"The Wormwood is under the command of capricious and cruel men with limited vision. I, for one, see the need to change that. A strong and loyal crew under the command of firm but fair leaders could make their mutual fortunes on these seas. We are little better than chum bait as matters currently stand."
"For what it is worth, I give each of you my oath. I will use my talents and abilities in concert with each of yours to bring about the change we seek. As proof of this, I offer you a demonstration of my trust in you."
Kehlysch removes his shirt, and exposes the gills on his neck. He hils up his hands, fingers spread wide, to show the webbing between his fingers.
"As you have already seen, I have some skill with the use of magic; but some of my abilities are simply from my nature. I have no need to hold my breath, and swimming comes as naturally to me as walking comes to each of you. I do not know what sort of man I am, or how I came to be, but I know that a life on the sea is my destiny. As such, I intend for my fate to be as much of my choosing as possible."
Bendrauss Seaborn |
[b]Aye I agree. As it stands no man 'ere will get a fair share o' plunder. I come to sea ta make me fortune. Not to be dealin wit scallywags like ol' Plugg and Scourge.[b] Ben replies as he struggles to keep up in his weakened condition.
Are we making checks for returning?
Louly a'Maris |
"Me too. I like being on the boat, but there's no way things need to be handled the way they do. We should all be working together, not worrying about whether we're going to get killed. And NO ONE should be tied to the mast!"
Louly gets more animated and her words more vehement as she goes on.
Kehlysch |
"We should get back to the ship. I think bringing at least one reefclaw back, or perhaps two would get us on better terms with the captain, and infuriate Plugg and Scourge at the same time. We should also bring some crabs back, just in case our exotic catch goes unappreciated. I'll fill my diving bag with crabs, as well."
Kehlysch |
"What of the venom? Does one of you wish to carry it, or should we hide it in the bilges with our other loot? I imagine carrying it will be risky, and being caught with it might yield unpleasant results."
GM Rapscallion |
You can take 10 on the return trip, as you're not further harassed by anything. Correct - one success; just let me know where you'd like it stashed...assuming for now that someone has it on their person.
The trip back to the ship is uneventful, and you're hoisted aboard by those few pirates you feel are loyal to you. Once presented to Master Scourge, the dour man looks in the buckets and sneers. What's this? I send ya' fer crabs an' ya' come back with this? Cursed shells are all burnt up and cracked! What am I supposed ta' do with this?
Kehlysch |
Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 4
"They are reefclaws sir. They are considered a delicacy in many seafaring circles. We thought the captain would like something more exotic than mere crabs for his table tonight."
If no one else claims to have taken it, Kehlysch will have the poison, at least until he can stash it. However, if someone else wants to claim that duty, be my guest!
Bosun Moon |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Moon reads Scourge like the man is an amateur poker player. "Aye, Scourge, you're too much an experienced sea dog to not recognize Reef Claws when ya see them. Only the best for the captain, right? We brought the best we could from that reef, hope it suits his table." Moon beams his chipped tooth smile, full of cheer. If Grok is about, he'll grab one of the claws and chase her about the deck, clacking the claw at her backside for the crew's amusement.
Louly a'Maris |
Louly giggles at Moon's actions, glad for some honest levity.
"Ol' Fishguts and I will whip this up into a right proper feast for anyone brave enough to try 'em. For those who aren't, well, we got plenty of crabs too."
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
GM Rapscallion |
Scourge glares at Bendrauss, his whip hand seeming to settle at his hip in a threatening gesture. His expression turns even more sour as he has the truth of the situation thrown back into his face. He looks to be on the verge of an explosion before a massive form appears on the poop deck, blocking out the light of the sun, which is now getting much lower in the sky. Captain Barnabus Harrigan looks down over the railing, massive arms folded over his chest and a stern look of reproach upon his face.
Just so happens that reefclaw is, indeed, a delicacy, Scourge - you uncultured imbecile. I had no idea that we'd find some so far away from the shore; you must have found some fine shallows out there. He walks down the steps to the main deck, his one good eye seemingly focused on the contents of the buckets. He Absently pulls a vial of light but slightly cloudy liquid from one of many pouches at his belt and shoves it into Moon's hands.
Don't let it be said that I won't reward good work. I just wish that the rest of these damnable knaves would show such initiative! He looks Louly up and down and inclines his head to the stairs leading down to the hold. Get this cooking then, woman. Tell that sodden drunk to sharpen his knives before he sets into these; they take care to prepare.
Scourge is left scowling at you as the captain heads back up the stairs. In an effort to save some face, he barks his orders sharply. You heard him! Get to it!
If you take the time to identify, and I'm sure you do - the potion is CMW. You can proceed to night time actions, if you like; any rolls to influence someone not yet friendly get a +2 due to the Captain's endorsement. Louly - a survival check for the meal, if you please.
