The baroness listens intently while the party explains the circumstances of their pacification of the kobolds. When finished, she leans back and sighs. "It's not ideal, certainly. I would have preferred their physical removal. However, I placed my trust in you and you placed your trust in this Nighttail. If she doesn't keep her promises, I'm afraid that the consequences will land on you."

She produces a wooden case. "If you say the job is done, then the job is done. And a job done deserves payment." She pops the lid and slides it across her desk. "As we agreed to."

Inside the fur-lined case are a dozen amethysts, cut and polished.

As she relinquishes the gems, she raises an eyebrow. "You claim these kobolds worshiped something evil?"

Marcus grins internally at the payment, visions of frothy ale and smiling serving wenches dancing in his head.

The baronesses question brings him back to the present, "Yes, two evil things in fact. Some duke of hell and a dragon," looking to his companions, "I do not recall their names though, do you three?"

"Ohh."

Upon seeing the gems, the quiet exclamation is out before Cira can stop herself. Quickly clearing her throat in an attempt to hide it, she focuses on Marcus' query. "It was Vapula and Lord... Aeteper... something. Aeteperax?"

"Aye, Aeteperax was wha' th' former leader shouted at us. Those names mean anythin' t' you?" Grargath looks to the Baroness, grateful that she was accepting (for now) of what happened in the caves, and even more pleased that payment was still relinquished. Nighttail better keep 'er word.

The baroness smirks. "It would seem the kobolds looted a history book. Aeteperax was the name of a great black wyrm slain by this town's founder, Lady Tula Belhaim, more than a thousand years ago. Its bones mark the site of her tomb."

"I agree," Cira says. "Their worshiping looked pretty deliberate, though. And if that's the case..."

What an unpleasant thought.

She turns to the Baroness. "Could you tell us about Lady Belhaim and Aeteperax? My lady," she adds quickly.

Marcus perks at the hint of an ancient tale involving the slaying of a dragon and the founding of a town.

While he was terribly dirty, tired and very very thirsty, his dreams of a bath, a barrom and a bed (maybe even in that order) would be put aside to hear a good tale.

Keeping silent, he listens intently for the baronesses reply.

Grargath looks visibly worried when Francis brings up the scales found in the chieftan's lair. "Where is this tomb?" he asks in addition to Cira's request.

The baroness dismisses the questions with a wave of her hand. "I am no historian. If you want to know more, I would suggest seeking out Bassy. That gnome is as old as the Witch Tower." She glances at Francis. "And let us keep this talk of black dragon scales to ourselves. There is no reason worry the townspeople about something that has been dead for a millennia."

"While I have you here," she continues. "I have some more work that requires your... expertise. After the wizard Hunclay's death, I sent word to his only living relative, a cousin in Yanmass. She has no interest in traveling to Belhaim to claim his estate, but she has requested that I auction off all of his property and possessions and have the funds sent to her, minus a seller's fee and the expenses of course."

"This leaves me with a daunting task: cataloging the contents of the Hunclay manor, which could entail considerable danger. As you recall from our previous conversations, Hunclay was something of a foul-tempered recluse. It is rumored that his home is warded by magical traps and guarded by monsters. The blackened kobold my men found on his doorstep is testament to this."

"This work seems tailor-made for adventurers such as yourselves. If you explore the manor, deactivate any traps, and defeat any guardians, I can offer you 5,000 gold pieces from my treasury."

Marcus hides his dissappointment with a mental note to talk to the gnome and tries to hide the avericious gleam in his eye at the mention of another fat pay day.

"I am sure we can handle your problem once we get a chance to rest and replenish our supplies. Do you have a specific timeline in mind for cataloguing the manor?"

I still need a two day binge before I do anything serious, hopefully that is possible. Not that I can't put it off for a fat stack of gold.

metagame question: will we need a rogue or similar for this module? Cause we don't have one, but I could maybe change my 3rd level to rogue or (more likely) trapper ranger if disable device is a necessity to keep us from being killed. Or we could invest in several 10 ft poles, a classic but effective option

actually, the more I think on it a rogue level would fit well for my character, I think I will do that. Bard 2/rogue 1. Hopefully disable device checks will go better for us than our peeceptions have thus far...

Grargath recalls the gnome he and Cira met when the group had split, shortly before delving into the kobold lair. "Aye, we've met Bassy." Grargath nods along with the Baroness' request to stay silent about the dragon scales, and waits to hear her answer to Marcus' question.

Hunclay's manor? Might be some more answers as t' what 'e was doin' in th' Witch's Tower with th' kobolds.

The baroness shakes her head. "The cousin gave us no timeline, so you're free to tackle this however you want."

Marcus nods at the Baronnesses response, "Then as soon as we are able, we will handle the manor, my Lady"

Once the group has been excused by the Baroness and are away he mentions, "I plan on relaxing the rest of the day and drinking away the night. Tomorrow we should liquidate our various treasures and see about upgrading our kit. Armor, weapons, spells, scrolls and perhaps a wand of healing. Thoughts?"

The next day...

Bassy's home is a modest cabin nestled between Belhaim's barber and a Delbin's Devices, a tinker. The burbling of Rogue Creek can be heard from just beyond the row of buildings.

"You're a dangerous man to drink with, Marcus."

Cira glances at the bard then frowns up at the sun and shields her eyes from the daylight as they approach Bassy's home, her head throbbing from a night full of drinking and not enough sleep or hydration. She approaches the door and knocks, then steps back to wait for someone to answer. "I just don't know how anyone keeps up with you." She gives him a tired, one sided smile. "One of these days you'll have to share your secrets with us."

While they wait, she crosses her arms and turns towards the sound of the creek, thankful that they're currently away from most of the noise of the town, at least for the time being.

Marcus laughs at Cira's comments, at least as much as his hangover allowed.

"A misspent youth, my dear, and the faithful worship of The Drunken God. Though, I seem to be out of practice."

Despite the hangover, there was a spring in his step as he walked along. Clean clothes, a night of good food, drink and song and now a great story to investigate. Life was good.

Plus, so much loot to split and spend.

Somehow I completely missed that Cira knocked on the door.

Inside, the party finds Bassy gently rocking in a chair. A leather-bound tome sits in her lap, comically large in comparison to her child-sized body. She wears a simple green dress and her grey-streaked hair is tied up in a tight ponytail.

"If there is anything I can do to help, please just ask."

Butter her up before the tale telling, make it extra good

"We have come to ask about the dragon, Aeteperax. The kobolds we encountered worshipped it as a god, yet the Baroness tells us it is dead, buried and a decoration.

We hoped you could give us the details to the founding of this town and the fate of the dragon."

-Posted with Wayfinder

Marcus:
Bophre Malak, the girl you rescued from the Bloodvow lair, is the daughter of the Malak family. They live on a farm outside of Belhaim.

The girl here is Marle, Bassy's adopted daughter.

Bassy leans back in her rocking chair, her expression neutral. "Aeteperax, eh? That's an old name, but one that the people of Belhaim still remember. But Baroness Origena probably told you all of that already. Luckily for you, my great-grandmother was a friend and ally of Lady Belhaim's."

"Back then," Bassy continues, "Dragons were much more common. So common, in fact, that they had a name for that time: The Dragon Plague. In a dozen years, northern Taldor endured an explosion in violence and bloody depredations by no fewer than two-score different dragons. But the worst of all of them was Aeteperax, the Black Doom."

"Bigger than an inn and as black as night, he terrorized a stretch of towns south of the Verduran forest, earning a reputation of butchery and sadism. When he attacked, he would flatten a town and any who surrendered were marked by his acid, permanently scarred as a warning to others that might challenge him. Tula Belhaim, was one such victim, surviving her villages destruction and eventually growing into the hero that would slay him."

"Her early years were lost to history, but she reappeared twenty years later, at the head of a band of mercenaries, the Slayers of Nazilli, so-named after her destroyed home. Tula Belhaim and her followers almost finished the Plague on their own, defeating dragon after dragon and covering themselves in glory."

"But her finest moment was the slaying of Aeteperax, the wyrm that destroyed her town and scarred her body with acid. She tracked the dragon to its lair deep in the swamplands of the Verduran forest and flushed it into the air with archers. There the dragon dueled with Arturic, the Slayers' mage. Although badly burned by the dragon's breath, Arturic forced Aeteperax to the ground with his spells, and there Lady Tula met the Black Doom head on. Wielding her magic sword, Wyrmsmite, opened a great wound in the beast's belly and stabbed it in the eye. Despite these wounds, Aeteperax reaped a heavy toll on the Slayers of Nazilli before Arturic through a ball of fire into its stomach wound. The monster dazed, Tula stepped forward and slew the dragon, driving her sword into its skull."

"Where Aeteperax lays is now called the Dragonfen, and it, including the rest of the Verduran Fork, was awarded to Belhaim by the Emperor of the time, in addition to the title of Baroness. Her legions of admirers flocked to the area and created this very town, with the buildings built from the limestone quarry where your kobold friends live."

"Eventually, Lady Tula would return to the bones of Aeteperax to build her family's tomb. Such a shame that she would so soon need it."

Grargath listens to the story intently, with a glint in his eye as Bassy describes the slaying of Aeteperax. T' slay a dragon would be somethin' indeed. The dwarf envisions how his father would react were he to return to the mountains with the head of a dragon.

He shakes his own head free of the fantasy. Grargath was unlikely to come across one of the beasts anytime soon. His thoughts suddenly shift back to the scales found in the mad kobold's lair.

"How did Lady Tula meet 'er fate?" he asks.

Do we have the scales with us right now to show her?

Bassy shakes her head to Francis's question. "I cannot be sure. It was so long ago. I think it likely though. Kobolds worship dragons as gods."

She turns to Grargath. "That is a sadder tale than Belhaim's origins. Lady Tula married one of her Slayers, the wizard Arturic Canteclure. The couple settled down and built a castle atop one of the town's hills. They had four children, but each died before they reached the age of nine, leaving the new barony with no heirs."

"Their deaths changed Lady Tula. She grew reclusive and morose, obsessed with preserving her legacy with a grand tomb. This new morbidity strained her marriage. It is said that in the days before her death, Lady Tula amended her will to ensure her husband was buried apart from her, so that she could rest for eternity on her own."

"One day, tragedy struck. The baroness was found dead, impaled on a statue beneath the keep's highest balcony. Her husband was discovered as well, his neck broken not 100 feet from the main gate. Their bodies were found by their servants and all of Belhaim mourned a tragedy none could comprehend or understand. The bodies were taken to the crypt and buried according to Lady Tula's wishes. The tomb has been sealed ever since."

"I know where they are, yes." Bassy replies. "Lady Tula built her tomb beneath them. Filled the bones in with dirt to turn it into a burial mound."

"I know where they are, yes." Bassy replies. "Lady Tula built her tomb beneath them. Filled the bones in with dirt to turn it into a burial mound."

"And if it was a curse, it was an effective one. Lady Tula was without heirs when she passed. The barony turned over to a distant relative of her husband's. The Canteclure's ruled this area for hundreds of years until Baron Sarvo picked the wrong side of a revolution against the Grand Prince. The crown's retaliation destroyed the Canteclures and Castle Tula. The Witch Tower was all that remained, but thanks to that old canker Hunclay, that's gone now too."

She sits back up slowly and clasps her hands in her lap as Marcus voices her own questions.

"Not that I can think of," muses Bassy. "Some fools might mutter about how Lady Tula never actually slew Aeteperax, but I can assure you that is not truly the case. In my adventurous youth, I ventured into the Dragonfens and laid eyes upon the tomb. The bones were there; as real as I appear to you right now."

Francis says, his mind somewhat settled. "Still, it might not hurt to check out the tomb at some point, perhaps when we are done cleaning out Hunclay's manor?" Giving Marcus a smile, he adds. "I hope you are up to the task, my friend. I know a spell that can help me search for traps, but sadly, it's benefits are a mere pittance at my current stage of faith."

I have access to the find traps spell, but it only grants a +1 bonus to my perception for traps. It does mean I get automatic rolls any time we come within ten feet of a trap though. Sadly, it will only last three minutes, and I would need to prepare it to be able to use it.

Since disabling traps is part of the task I assume we will proceed very slowly and with many, many checks. And knowing our luck with rolls, miss all the traps and set them off anyway...

Bassy frowns. Unfortunately not. Azmur and Rima are both druids, so they are capable in the wilderness, but it's not like them to not check in from time to time."

She raises her eyebrows when Francis mentions Hunclay. "So Lady Origena has hired you to inspect that old hobgoblin's tower, eh? I suppose it makes sense. You lot are quickly earning a reputation around here."

That combined with the strange scales and the behavior of the kobolds beneath the ground... It gave him an uneasy feeling. But Francis is right, we still 'ave a job t' do at tha' blasted wizard's manor.

"Oh, absolutely, absolutely." Bassy settles back into her chair. "We Belhaimers might have differing opinions on how things should happen, but we don't forget saving one of our own quickly."

She glances over to the entrance, where the teenaged Marle holds a steaming kettle. "Ah, here is the tea. Now was there anything else you wanted to discuss?"
