"How're yer sleep spells? Got anymore in yah?"
Marcus nods to the dwarf, "aye, I have a couple left but Cira's magic is far more potent than mine. I am will try if diplomacy fails."
Haven't heard from Cira in a while. Uou out there Cira? CCCCCCIIIIIIIRRRRRAAAAA!

Cira Illivar |
I'M HEEEEEERRRREEEEE! I've been pulling a lot of long shifts at work so my brain has been less than enthused about attempting a post. I'm good to go now though! :)
The dwarf glances at Cira and Marcus. "How're yer sleep spells? Got anymore in yah?"
Cira thinks for a moment. "I'd rather not tire myself overmuch before we have to deal with Roaghaz, to be honest. I'd like to hope that he'll be reasonable, but I'm not sure I see that happening. I can keep dazing them as much as needed, though." Truth be told, she was itching to use some real magic. It had been a long time since she'd had to actively hold herself back, and she didn't miss it.
Marcus Eld |
Marcus smiles as the group chimes in.
"Right then, Nighttail makes the introductions, Francis tries to conver them with a rousing sermon and if that fails, I'll try to put them to sleep. After that... guess we'll play it by ear from there." turning to Grargath and Cira and continues, "I guess Grargath gets to stand there and loom mean and Cira will dazzle them with her smile. Right? Onward then, and don't worry; it will sound way more heroic in my next ballad."

Nighttail smirks. "I could give it a try, I suppose. They don't call me 'the Glib' for nothing."
She nudges Hak down the tunnel.
---
The ceiling of this chamber rises to a lofty twelve feet. The cave floor drops away into a pair of long, ten-foot-deep pits. Between them, a ridge of stone forms a dubious walkway to a landing on the opposite side, where a five foot wide shaft descends into darkness. It is on this walkway where the party is confronted by half a dozen kobolds.
Armed with slings, they are fortified behind a curtain of rock on the eastern side of the eastern pit. Gaps in the stone allow them to use the are as cover.
Nighttail trots forward and begins to chirp and squawk in Draconic. The kobolds on the other side reply in turn. The conversation starts agitated, but starts to settle down after a few moments.
She turns back to the party. "Okay, I've got them buttered up. They'll hear you out at least."
Marcus Eld |
Marcus grips his bow in an as non confrontational manner as possible while listening to the kobold talk.
Before Nighttail finishes he mutters to Francis. "You're up priest, your diplomacy has been much better than mine of late, I shall help as I can if you hit a wall." in a lower voice, "I'll have a spell ready should we fail."
With the way Ive been rolling lately Ill just let Francis or Cira do the main diplomacy and toss an Aid Another

Francis Firestar |
Before entering, Francis offers a quick prayer to his goddess for guidance, and then talks to the kobolds, hoping Nighttail will translate well if they can't understand him.
"We have no desire to end your life. Every challenge we have come across, we have succeeded in winning. We have slain devils, ghouls, and even kobolds when we have had to. We once even bested Eepo and his comrades without lifting a single weapon. We are strong. We can be strong enemies, but why not be strong allies? There is a new order coming to these tunnels, an order that will bring wealth and power to those who join it. Join us, or at least surrender and be bound until we are finished, and things will go well for you."

Well, I flopped. Cira, you might have to try this out.
Cira Illivar |
Cira holds her breath as Francis attempts to appeal to the kobolds, but she can tell by the looks on their faces that they're not buying it. Adopting her most comforting smile, she steps forward and gives Francis' arm a gentle squeeze as she tries her hand at addressing the waiting kobolds.
"What my friend is trying to say is that, simply, we don't want to hurt you, not unless you give us a reason to do so. We know about Roaghaz, and the way he leads. And we can help with that. You can keep your lives if you listen to us. But we won't hesitate to hurt you if you don't cooperate."

Grargath Forgebane |
Grargath grumbles to himself as he eyes the kobolds during Cira and Francis' pleas. Their words were nice, but he could tell the kobolds were starting to get restless. The dwarf had never been one for words. That's why he carried the axe. Grargath was there for when words failed and action was required. But at this moment, he looks deep inside himself and struggles to find the words that will make the kobolds see reason.
Diplomacy: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Would you look at that beautiful nat 20.
"My friends 'ere speak th' truth!" he says to the cluster of kobolds. "We 'ave survived the Witch's tower and 'ave formed close ties with th' Baroness o' th' surface. Roaghaz's rein o' terror is at an end. We 'ave bested all yer guards an' we'll best you too if yah do not fall in line an' fall behind yer new leader, Nighttail."

The kobolds turn among themselves, whispering. After a moment or two, one steps forward. "You say you defeated Eepo? Eepo was proud warrior-kobold. You make it past snapper-turtles. You make it past traps. You make it this far, you muse be mighty. If you kill Roaghaz, we follow Nighttail."
Nighttail grins and nudges Hak towards the next tunnel down. "Shall we then?"
Cira Illivar |
Astounded, Cira shoots the dwarf a grin as she falls into step next to Marcus and Francis, following Nighttail. "I can't believe how well he managed that," she says quietly, still shocked that neither she nor the well-spoken cleric could sway the creatures. "Must be the axe."

Marcus exhales in ... relief? Amazement?
Either way I'll take it
"Well done Grargath" he says as he takes his place in line and they move on, "I didn't know you had it in you! Although, "he mutters as he takes a furtive glance behind them, "I hope they don't change their minds and stab us in the back."
Focusing again ahead of the group, bow ready, he queries Nighttail, "Anything in particular we need to look for on the next level? Apart from Roaghaz, of course. Speaking of whom, what kind of warrior is your old boss? Mage? Priest? Really, extra big for a Kobold?"

Grargath Forgebane |
Grargath grins sheepishly as they follow Nighttail down the tunnels. "I surprised myself as much as any o' yah." The smile falls from his face as they trudge along. "But I wouldn' count on dumb luck t' save us again."

Marcus chuckles at the diminutive ranger's commentary.
"I think I like you Nighttail, you're all right" to the rest of the group, "looks like the shrine is ahead, lets be ready for a battle. Sounds like an evil kobold cleric needs a whomping. Like a slightly eccentric ranger I met said once, "Butt kicking, for goodness!"". Chuckling at the memory, "he was an odd duck, that one."

Grargath readies his axe and his shield at Nighttail's words as they move through the corridors.

The dwarf lets out a laugh. "You'll need t' tell more o' tha' story when we get out o' these tunnels," he tells Marcus. "When we're back at th' Wise Piper Inn with drink in our hand," he adds wistfully.
Cira Illivar |
"Yes, that does sound like a particularly interesting one," Cira says with a smile at Marcus, still casting curious glances at Nighttail. She couldn't help but be amazed and confused by how... normal their kobold companion was. She'd have to ask her about it, if they ever got the time.
"Alright," she mutters to herself firmly, attempting to steel herself for what would probably be the inevitable fight. "Let's get this over with."

The ceiling at the center of this cave is twelve feet high. A crude idol shaped like a looming, winged monster stands in the middle of the cave, decorated with grisly strips of dried viscera.
A red-scaled kobold stands behind the statue in prayer. A pair of human skeletons, holding weapons and shields, flank the diminutive priest. The kobold's eyes flicker open at the sound of your approach.
"Man-things? In this holy shrine-lair?" she cries, rising. She jabs finger at the party, her claws black and shiny. "Kill-slay them, minions. They will be made to pay-suffer."
Cira acts first!

Cira reels briefly at the sight of the animated skeletons but quickly refocuses, snapping her hand upwards as she attempts to daze the priest.

Francis steps forward into a spot where his power can hit both skeletons. Lifting up his holy symbol he cries out "Flame of Nirvana, purify the souls of the dead! Grant them peace!"
A wave of golden light flashes out and silvery motes shudder into the bodies of the skeletons as the channeled energy of his goddess tears at the fabric of the necrotic magic that binds their bones together.

A flickering, immaterial barrier takes the brunt of Cira's spell, the remnants are easily brushed off by a smirking Churgri. Chanting in Draconic, the cleric runs her unholy symbol across the length of her staff. As if in answer to her prayers, her weapon shimmers with a fell energy.
The skeletons falter under Francis's holy assault, the leftmost crumbling to bones. The right remains standing, but has been clearly weakened by the blast.
Francis and Grargath may act!

GM R0B0GEISHA |
Sorry, guys. I've been updating the combat map the entire time, but I forgot to give you all permission to see it.
Grargath, correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you only claim the vengeful trait vs. an enemy that injured you?
Grargath's axe impacts into the shimmering field around Churgri. The barrier flickers for moment before allowing the weapon to slip through. The blade slices into the cleric's shoulder, leaving a deep gash. The dwarf's backswing batters the last animated skeleton, destroying it and sending the bones clattering across the cavern.
Cira can now act!
Cira Illivar |
Cira freezes, staring at the kobold in a moment of indecision, torn between what action she should take next. She looks down at her mostly useless crossbow before glancing back up at the priest.
What now?
She could fire a crossbow bolt, but she wasn't very good at that and it hadn't been doing much good lately, or she could try to daze it again in the hopes that the kobold wouldn't overpower the spell this time, or she could—
"Might need to break out the heavier magic, Cira!"
Cira snaps to attention and looks to Marcus when she hears her name. She takes in a deep breath and nods to him, turning her focus back to the enemy. Bringing her hand to her chest, she thrusts it forward, sending a bolt of bright white energy hurtling towards Churgri.

The bolt flies unerringly towards the kobold cleric, slamming into her chest. Churgri hisses in pain and stumbles away from Grargath, raising her unholy symbol of Vapula, a rearing griffin sculpted from gold. She chants a few words in Draconic and the wounds she has taken begin to seal up.
Marcus, Francis, and Grargath may now act!
Francis Firestar |
Francis clods forward, his scalemail clinking with each step as he closes in on the small reptilian priest. With a stern look he swings hia morningstar down at the creature, trying to smash it to the ground.

Guessing a bit here since the kobold and Francis' movements arent on the map, but I shoulf have enough movement available to get into flank.
Doubting his bowmanship in such tight quarters, Marcus drops his bow and approaches the melee, drawing his sword as he does so. Reaching the opposite side of the Kobold from Francis, he charges his blade and slashes at the Kobold.

Cackling, Churgri knocks aside Francis's attack with a twirl of her staff, but it is not enough. Marcus circles behind the cleric, slashing her effortlessly through her protective barrier. Crying out in pain, the kobold turns to face the bard, but is hacked down by Grargath.
Churgri falls to the ground, sprawling under her over-large cloak. Her staff clatters away, the magic that surrounds it fading. She reaches out a clawed hand towards the weapon, croaking strange Draconic words before letting out a strangled breath. The cleric ceases moving, clearly dead.
Nighttail leads Hak cautiously out of the tunnel. "Woah, you made quick of her."
Marcus Eld |
Marcus breathes easier as the evil cleric goes down. "Ah ha! Truly we are mighty heores! At least thats how the song will go. Though... I think there will be more skeletons, maybe a score or so. Truly outline the strength and power of Francis' faith and mace arm. Yeah, definately more skeletons."
Looking over the cleric with a quick cantrip (detect magic ), he whistles, "magic cloak, not sure what though. Some nice other stuff. Lets be sure to grab it after we deal with the big bad boss. Speaking of ..." turning to Nighttail, "were you and Hak planning on helping at all? Or is your bow just for show? If ya wanna toss a few arrows at your old boss, I won't complain." he follows his comment with a smile, trying to encourage the kobold.

Cira Illivar |
"Good work, all of you," Cira says distractedly as she looks at the maps. "If we follow the passage north, the fork to the right goes to a room that Sesserak labeled as 'future cave,' and the one to the left leads down a corridor with a fire trap to the 'Grand Hall'."
She puts the maps back into her bag. "Is this 'future cave' worth looking into, Nighttail?" She starts towards the northern passage, muttering irritably to herself. "Anything to get us out of here quicker."
