Katyeva reads the envelopes aloud. "Dust of Illusion and Dust of Tracelessness, huh? OK, sounds like they do what they say on the packet. Could come in handy later, but right now we need to focus."

She looks toward Carthas. "How's that mix coming on, Doc? Need some encouragement?"

"I've seen enough war to know that you surviving doesn't guarantee victory, and that everything even the victor sees a lot of death. Many of those deaths are necessary to gain that victory, as horrible as that is. One day, perhaps even today, it may be a choice of your life, my life, or any other life to secure victory and save many others lives. If an individual's survival is driving decisions, this battle and this war are already lost, because I guarantee you, the other side will sacrifice whatever, and whoever, they need to in order to win."

"Yes, Katyeva. Could you retrieve that substance over there for me?"

Opening for an aid another check! Go!

Katyeva spits on the floor of the shop in response to Rickus' diatribe. "Rakk that! I'm not sacrificing MY life for any cause! No such thing as 'victory' anyway: look at the Molthune border... Damn thing ain't moved more'n a mile either way in our lifetimes, an' how many 'victories' has there been declared in that time?" She glares at the soldier. "An' besides, you can bet your last gold coin that the rakker sending other people to die for 'victory' is the one hiding behind a rock, wearing the only arrow-proof helmet... Just like you're holed up in this shop, getting ready to run, while a whole buncha people out there are dying."

She pirouettes neatly away, scooping up the jar Carthas requested and handing it to him with a mock curtsy. "There you go, Doc."

Alchemy, aid another: 1d20 ⇒ 12

She looks meaningfully at Rickus. "So don't talk to ME about doing whatever is needed for 'victory' - I ain't a soldier, and I ain't dumb enough to fall for that bull#£&@. Neither are you, which is why you're gonna live tonight when others don't."

"You are right that some people will die. I think we have already seen a lot of that already. But I think the only victory that is possible at this point, is making sure as many people as possible live to tell the tale."

Otho looks towards Carthas. "Before we go, we need a plan. Carthas, how do you use this stuff? I think it would be best if Ketyeva or I were the ones blowing the bridge, since we are the ones that are most likely to get around without being noticed. The rest of you should focus on getting the survivors across the bridge."

A slightly mad smile plays across Carthas's face. "Leave that to me, little halfling. I am quite good at avoiding notice when necessary. Now, let's move. I need to speak to Kining."

Still under the effects of my mutagen, so Carthas is a little crazy right now. And looks vaguely plant-like, which no one has reacted to yet.

lol - hadn't noticed that post! In fairness, there's a lot of weirdness going on right now, like that tower in the middle of the town, and the hobgoblins everywhere, and ...

Katyeva gives Carthas a slightly nervous look from the corner of her eye. "Right you are, Doc."

"And you!" She looks at Otho, exasperated. "Weren't you listening to what I just said?! You don't volunteer. Not EVER. And certainly not before finding out what you're being paid."

"We have a couple dozen lives depending on us now. We'll save those we can. It's likely we aren't all making it across that bridge. You have more honor than you let on. Your best chance to survive this day would have been to use your skills to slip out quietly. Instead, you have done what needed to be done, saving lives along the way. "

"And you are right, I'm no longer a soldier. I gave that up when I came up north and ended up in your jail. As far as victories, I counted it a victory every day when that line did not move. Skirmish after skirmish with the rangers, there were deaths on both sides. I shot the enemies I could. I mended my comrades when I could. As long as we held that wall, we had done our duty, and those behind that wall...families, merchants, children... they were safe another day to live their lives without the war."

"I don't know what happened here. I don't know who these hobgoblins serve, or how they got here. What I do know, is that the people in this city, did not wake up this morning expecting the war to come to them. THIS is what happens when those lines move. THIS is what I have fought to protect against most of my life. I know these are not my people, but no people should suffer like this, and I plan to do my part to fight back against this as I am able. I'm not foolish enough to think we can drive them off on this day. I don't expect rescue by the rangers, as I've seen first hand what happened before when they came up against a force like this. Victory on this day is getting as many people out as possible, so that this isn't the last battle."

Otho looks at Carthas with a worried look on his face. I don't think Carthas should be the one to do this. He is the only one of us that is capable of healing others once we make it across the bridge. We need him alive more than we need him blowing the bridge. Plus, I don't think he is in the best state of mind for something so delicate right now.

"I was listening, but I know that the only way we are getting out of here is together. I volunteered, and I know exactly what I am being paid: my life."

Otho looks over as Olaf changes the subject. "He's right. Let's get going."

Otho exits the shop and moves to where the survivors are waiting.

"Alright everyone. We are going to try to get out of here. We are going to go over the bridge. Now, we will try to hold off the hobgoblins so as many of you as possible can get across. Whatever happens just keep running. We will regroup at the big rock in the forest. You know the one. Kining, Carthas wants to talk to you as we make our way to the bridge, we don't have any time to dally. Everyone ready? Let's go."

Otho leads the group towards the bridge, sticking to the sides of the buildings and helping the survivors keep out of sight.

---

Colorful gobs of lichen and moss dapple the ancient, basalt bridge here at the Marideth’s narrowest crossing. The ravine below drops twenty feet into raging whitewater and jagged, exposed boulders. To the northwest stands a ramshackle shed and a weathered but sturdy-looking wooden crane. The doors to the shed are smashed open. Twenty some bloody and motionless bodies litter the ground, and above them flap banners painted with an ominous, fanged red shield. To the north, three hundred feet past the bridge, a wall of trees and ferns marks the edge of the Fangwood.

A female hobgoblin, the fires in Phaendar reflecting from her steel armor, stands guard on the bridge. A hulking wolf sits next to her, ears perked.

Is she holding a bow or a melee weapon? You know what, it doesn't matter, Olaf cares not.

"Bah, only one puny hobgoblin and a, very large wolf. A fight worth having. Get your bows ready, I do not wish to be flanked for long."

Olaf strides ahead of the group (10' or so) and roars out a challenge in his usual stentorian roar.

"Goblin! Leave the bridge and let us pass, and you may live. Leave not, and you will die."

He continues approaching as he speaks, flail whirling as if in anticipation of blows struck in battle, almost lusting for blood to again flow along its flanges.

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 - 4 = 16 (+1 BAB, +3 Dex, +1 Size, +1 PBS, +2 Favored Enemy, -4 Into Combat)
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 (+2 Favored Enemy)

Otho flinches as Carthas' bomb explodes within the mix. "Carthas! What are you doing!? Kat! Are you OK?"

Kergri snorts and deflects Olaf's swing with her shield, stepping towards the oracle and away from Katyeva's daggers. This motion carries her further than desired however, so her backwards swing at the rogue is short.

When the bomb hits her, she grunts in pain, patting at the flames with her shield hand. She eyes Carthas with annoyance, before focusing her attention on Katyeva. "It is only right to know the name of the one that kills you."

From the bank of the river, Lirosa and Taidel continue to fire arrows into the combat, although their fear of hitting Katyeva or Olaf throws their aim off.

Everybody is up!

Katyeva ducks the sword, and drives her daggers at the the armoured warrior. She doesn't bother to reply to the taunts, saving her breath for fighting instead.

She grins savagely as at least one of her blades slips through the hob's heavy armour.

Olaf simply growls at his missed swing, then howls as Carthas' firebomb explodes and burns him. Luckily for Carthas, Olaf doesn't realise it was his teammate that burned him.

"Gah, treacherous goblin! Using firebombs to deny me honor!"

Whirling his flail up and around, he lashes out again.

Rickus takes a step closer to Katyeva. He thinks for a moment of steping in front of her to give her cover from the Hobgoblin, but quickly decides, she'd be just as likely to stab him for getting in her way, so he settles for a spot between her and the edge of the bridge. As he steps, he takes another arrow from his quiver and takes a moment to aim, hoping to compensate for the unfamiliar bow that hadn't worked well for him thus far. "Do you need all of our names, or just the one who lands the final blow...in which case my money is on the northman...it might take a while getting all of his names though." With that, Rickus releases the arrow, not as concerned with hitting anyone but his target.

Carthas looks over at Otho. "I am using the most effective means at my disposal to subdue the hobgoblin. They knew what I would be doing - it's not the first time I've tossed a bomb they've seen. They should have thought of that before getting in my way. But, if you must insist, I'll pursue an alternate avenue."

Carthas pulls out a sickle - usually used to harvest plants with healing properties - and circles around, avoiding the hobgoblin's attacks to move next to it.

Move action draw sickle, move action to melee range with the hobgoblin. Current AC is 22 (dendrite mutagen, shield extract).

Katyeva looks confused at the fuss Otho is making: as far as she's concerned, Carthas targeted the hob and avoided her completely. "Relax, Otho, I'm fine. See? No burns at all. Now if you don't mind, I'm kind of in the middle of something here..."

She grins at the hob. "I dunno, I've got you tryin' to introduce yourself, I've got a halfling trying to chat me up... It's like a rakking social convention here! Can we just focus on trying to kill each other, without all this chit-chat?"

At least that way I know I won't get interrupted while I'm monologuing!

Liberty's Edge

Feels like an end of act "boss fight" although she could just be a setup guy. Wouldn't be surprised to see Paizo do +3 CR in that case, which could be a 5th level fighter/ranger/whatever. It could be pushing (or even exceeding) 40 hp in that case. I suppose I could try to figure out it's level by peaking in spoilers, but it's scarier not knowing. Unless it has over 20 AC though, 24 damage is incoming. She sounds armored up, just a matter of how armored up.

I forget to check the forum for one day and you guys manage to slaughter the hobgoblin without me!

Seeing the hobgoblin taking attack after attack, Otho realizes that now is the time to get all the survivors across the bridge. He turns back to the survivors and yells "Quick! Its now or never! Get to the other side! Remember the meeting place! Go! Go! Go!"

Otho readies an arrow in order to cover the survivor's movement.

Holding an attack action in case anything threatens the survivors moving across the bridge.

Readied attack:

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 + 3 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 27 (+1 BAB, +3 Dex, +1 Size, +1 PBS, +2 Favored Enemy, +1 Hunter’s Knack)
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3 (+2 Favored Enemy)

HP l 20/20 | Init +2, Perception +4 | AC 16 (18 vs goblin), touch 11, flat-footed 15 (+5 armor, +1 Dex, ) | Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2 | Human (Ulfen)| Oracle (Battle)/Bloodrager(Destined, Steelblood) 1/1 | Spells: 1st 4/4 | Rage 6/6 | Destined Strike 3/3

Once the hobgoblin is paste

"Brave but weak. Still worth honoring." Olaf grumbles as he takes a moment to honor the dead hobgoblin, before callously searching her body while his companions worry about evacuating people and setting bombs. He is especially interested in her fine armor.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
