GM:
I'd have to double check the rule but I think I can charge a straight path. I followed a line like could be used for a lightening bolt. I don't believe I can't go to the side.
Reading charge again in Pathfinder it certainly implies a straight line, but seems to leave a bit of room open.
You must move before your attack, not after. You must move at least 10 feet (2 squares) and may move up to double your speed directly toward the designated opponent. If you move a distance equal to your speed or less, you can also draw a weapon during a charge attack if your base attack bonus is at least +1.
reads to me as straight line, but leaves it open for diagonal movement or hexes (which is really confusing for some players btw - but I use in my home game)
So the final determination is that functionally your interpretation isn't wrong, its just not how the rule reads to me.

My group has always played that as you can't go around things in the way, etc. If a lightening bolt that is a straight line can have different grid layouts then we assumed the same.

I didn't have a real problem with Fox running around the battlefield. I was just hoping there was an in game reason, the same way I had hoped that if there was an in game reason I had given him an in game motivation not to do it.
I would not have pulled my whip till I knew there was a threat, Surprise round I was grappled and lost half my health, round 1 I broke the grapple and then went down, I never had a chance to equip the whip, sadly.
So...if you're down a player, you wouldn't by any chance be looking for a replacement? I only say because I happen to have a character all ready and prepared for a Hollow's Last Hope game that she's never gotten into...
Here's the character I had in mind if you'd care to see her background (in profile). She's a halfling sorceress and both of her parents have fallen ill from the mysterious sickness.
I'm thinking that after having been rebuffed several times in town by the local authority, she heard that a group had headed into the forest in search of a cure and she ran off to find them. Being the young alone girl that she is, I could see her getting caught in a spiders web or trap or knocked out or something along those lines, if you wanted to use that to work me in. Seems more interesting than just walking into the clearing and saying hi. Of course, if I'm the odd thing in the bush, that works too.

I'm pretty sure the comment about cooking gnomes went over his head but some part of his psyche realized that jumping in a pot formerly used for cooking small humanoids is not in his best interests.
Haha, the thought crossed my mind when I saw where the GM is going with the cauldron. Don't worry, though - we've worked out how I'll be joining the party. It'll happen soon enough...I hope.
