Wraith casts the magic, lowering them into position.

"I know people too, side bet my share of this coin purse that they bicker and fight over the found coins as well."

With what's become a trademark smirk, he steps back and presents the window to the ambushers.

Jezabel hands the scroll of sleep back to Wraith. "You might need to use it shortly."

Just in case, Wraith! Jezabel will be too busy trying to tear out the enemies squishy bits to use a scroll this fight.

Then she gets into position, ready to head out the window after Balam when the guards are in place.

Whose got the rope to tie it off?

Geborah peers from a window into the dark night, alert for the first sign of an approaching lantern. The rope is coiled in her hands, one end tied to the warden's wardrobe.

Wraith lowers the coins down to the walkway, and Geborah watches as the guard patrol comes through their sweep, lantern held before them. They come to the coins and stop, one of them, a younger voice, saying, "Here now, where'd these come from? They weren't here when we passed this way before."

His partner, with an older voice, says, "Who cares? Let's pocket them. Now, since you're the rookie and I'm the veteran, I'll take 3 of the coins, and you can take the other 2. That's a fair split."

The rookie responds, "Hang on, this is the Warden's tower. What if they're his coins, eh? He's some sort of Wizard, I ain't getting turned into a toad over these coins. Maybe we should wake him and give them back."

The veteran says, "What, see if the Warden's lost any money? You think he won't turn you into a toad if you interrupt his beauty sleep? Besides, his family's loaded. He probably won't even notice their missing."

It's clear the two guards are bickering about the coins - they are clearly distracted.

Okay, both guards are distracted and flat-footed. You guys take your surprise round, and then I'll roll Initiatives.

Taking 10 to climb down the rope. I assume climbing down and moving closer (but out of sight) was her whole surprise round?

Geborah silently lowers the rope out of the window the guards can't see.

GM, could members of the party attempt to slip down the rope without being noticed before any surprise round?

They can make Stealth checks, but remember that you move at half-speed while using Stealth, and climbing moves at one-quarter speed, so you will move at 1/8 speed doing both. I'd say it can be done with 3 Climb and Stealth checks per person. You can increase the DC of the Climb check (currently 5 with a rope braced against a wall) to move at half-speed while Climbing by another 5, for a DC 10 Climb check. With that option, it would only be 2 Climb and Stealth checks per person.

I was also under the impression that you were going out the window the guards are on the side of. Are you going out the window on the opposite side from them?

Is there enough time to buff before we attack? Like if we can see the lantern light coming, or notice the guards talking? If so, Taty will buff her longsword for the ensuing melee and cast guidance on herself.

Tatienne sits calmly waiting for the patrol to notice the words. She sits quiet on a stool, her back against the wall near the window, the longbow drawn and nocked. Once Balam and Jezebel go down the rope, Taty stands and fires the nocked arrow at the nearest guard. Tossing the longbow aside, the relic hunter prepares to jump from the window towards the nearest standing guard.

bow attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15

Attack the closest guard. Hopefully they have a 15 AC flatfooted. Taty'll go out the window next round.

I understood it that we were going out the window the guards were on the side of. At any rate, once Taty can move and attack, she's probably going out the window with an acrobatics check.

EDIT: If we're taking time to be sneaky, then she'll go out the window taking 10 and sneak around to the other side of the tower. I don't want to shoot an arrow if it is going to be next round before others are attacking. That would give the guards plenty of time to blow a horn.

EDIT EDIT: I like Jezebel's style.

From Geborah's description, I thought we were going out the other side than they're on. Jezabel's crazy, though. She'd rather leap from a window on one of them as a charge as mentioned in the discussion. If that's an option, she'll do that. I should let others climb the rope and try to sneak if they want before she leaps like a mad-woman. Is anyone going to try the sneaking route? We can all get in the battle faster if we use both windows, I suppose.

So, please cancel my sneaking option from above, Jezabel would rather take the charging-leap-attack onto a guard instead. She'll do it in the surprise round, but if others are going to try sneaking, she'll wait until after they do so.

Let me know if it's too late to cancel my action, and I'll stick with the one previously posted.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm in favor of at least some of us sneaking down the rope to get in position. Does Tatienne have another use of her size alteration ability, which would let her shrink Grumble so he can go out the window?

As others begin to descend on the guards, Geborah moves to the window that looks down on them, and rehearses Infernal strictures in her head.

In the surprise round, Geborah readies an action to cast Forbid Action--No Communication--on the first guard who attempts to raise an alarm.

LE M Human Antipaladin (dread vanguard, lord of darkness) of Asmodeus 3/Cavalier (Vengeance) 32/32 HP 0 NL| AC 21 T 10 FF 21 | F +8, R +4, W +9 | Init +2 | Per +10| CMB +6 | CMD 16 | intim +13, | Dkvis: 30 6/6 STAM | Smite Good 1/day | 4/day Touch of Corruption | Cruelty |Detect Good at will | -6 Armor check

Balam will take 10 and climb down the rope on the side of the tower opposite from the guards.

So, the plan is that while the two guards argue, some of you are going to sneak down the rope - the others are going to watch from the window, and some of you are going to leap from the window and land on the guards in the surprise round.

Here is how I'll resolve this: I will randomly determine how long the guards are distracted for. Then, each person who wants to climb down the rope has 2 choices - they can either make a DC 10 Climb check and 1 Stealth check, or 2 DC 5 Climb Checks and 2 Stealth checks to quietly descend the tower. If they don't make any Stealth checks, the guards here them climbing down. If not everyone is down the tower by the time the guards are finished being distracted...well, that might cost you a surprise round.

Secret Roll:

Time Distracted: 2d3 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4

Yep, but I've only got 1-2 buffs left, after which Taty isn't much of a combatant. I'd prefer to save them if possible. What about, if we station Grumblejack at the entrance to the tower, behind the closed door on the inside of the tower, and we open it up as we go by, letting him step out and join us (once we get the drop on the guards)?

According to the GM, the only tower door is the one we came in, in the courtyard. If you can think of a way to get Grumblejack to pop out of that door at the right time--I don't think complicated plans are his strength--go for it. Maybe he can climb up from the courtyard, or with his reach, even attack from there. Otherwise, it seems like the choice is between having you buffed for a single round, or having Grumblejack for an entire fight. It's your call.

Ah yeah, sorry, I was looking for the description of the tower just now and couldn't find it. Grumblejack it is. GM, I'm going to stay in the tower window. Once Jezebel goes out the window on the surprise round, Taty will do this:

As the guards argue over the coins, Tatienne meditates on roaches, those most impressive creatures, able to squeeze and flit about wherever they desire. Sliding her hand across the ogre's rib, the relic hunter smirks as he shrinks down to be just a tad larger than the kid. "Through the window now! You've only got a few seconds!"

Grumblejack will be medium sized for one round.

Geborah's eyes fill with glee as she wraps Infernal syllables around her enemy's will and binds him not to raise the alarm. As he falls beneath her allies' blades, she fixes her mismatched eyes on the other guard, ready to stop him with an incantation too.

Geborah again readies an action to cast Forbid Action--No Communication--if a guard attempts to raise an alarm.

Round 1

FireSkorn remains where he is, waiting to see if the alarm is sounded. Delays

Geborah's eyes fill with glee as she wraps Infernal syllables around her enemy's will and binds him not to raise the alarm. As he falls beneath her allies' blades, she fixes her mismatched eyes on the other guard, ready to stop him with an incantation too.

Grumblejack stands from his position, returning to normal size as he does so. Looking at the now too small for him sword, he drops it saying, "Grumblejack not good smash with toothpick."

He then looks at the prone guard Jezabel landed on and throws his fist down to punch him.

His fist punches the guard in the chest with a meaty "Thwack!", and those nearby think they hear some ribs cracking.

Tatienne curses and lets loose an arrow at the guard with the horn. In her haste, the attack goes wide, and the arrow skitters off into the darkness.

Watching from the tower window, readies to cast one of his remaining attack spells at the guards. While checking to make sure that the combat isn't drawing any undue attention.

Wraith:

You don't see any signs the combat has drawn any attention - yet.

With a grim look, Balam presses the attack. His face is cold, detached, as he stalks towards the prone guard with the horn. The guard's life means nothing to him, save that the guard must die so that Balam can live. He swings his blade in a quick downward chop. The blade connects, felling the foolish guard, the horn clattering to the top of the wall from his fingers.

Jezabel scrambles to her feet and smiles widely at the fleeing guard. She slinks forward as Balam cuts him down. Shruggin, she looks at the one lying on the ground next to her, and punches him in the throat.

The guard lying on the ground, who was clearly the rookie based on his age, chokes from Jezabel's punch to the throat and coughs up blood as his eyes close and he falls unconscious.

One guard lying on the ground dying, the other unconscious but taking 4 bleed damage a round, and not an alarm sounded. Well done. Combat is over.

From the shadowy window above the gore-spattered walkway, Geborah softly applauds the victors. "Another triumph. I grow to like these one-sided fights. Let's see if I can't arrange another. A moment; Wraith and I will be down." She moves to the other window and slips down the rope to the walkway, trusting Wraith's magic to bring it down after them.

The childlike priestess stoops to examine the fallen, searching them for keys and maps and other valuables. "Two more uniforms, and more armaments...perfect for our next trick. Before the guards at the gate have a chance to wonder what's happened to the patrol, we'll replace it. Jezabel and I will put on the new uniforms, once she and Wraith use their magic to clean and mend them, as they did the first ones. We'll look less convincing in them than Balam and Tatienne do, so those two will be in the lead. Wraith and Skorn will march between us, their hands held behind their backs so they seem to be manacled. We'll circle around to the front of the castle, and when the guards there notice us, Balam will call out that we're bringing prisoners to Blackerly because they claim to have information about an assassination attempt--that and the password should get us inside of a blade's length of them."

She looks thoughtfully up at Grumblejack. "This would seem to be the best time to use the potion of invisibility. He won't fit into any ruse, but he could pass the guards unseen and flank them as we approach, for another one-sided victory."

Jezabel watches the guard at her feet slowly bleed out with a wide smile on her face. As the life leaves him for good, she begins to hum a quiet little song.

She wanders over to Grumblejack and leans on him. "Having fun, yet?" she sings softly.

After speaking with her nice ogre friend, Jezebel helps rifle through the belongings of the dead men.

"I'll not wear their amor." Jezabel replies with a laugh. "It will befoul my spells and hinder my attacks. Clothes, are fine and weapons. But that won't see us through your ruse."

Where exactly are we now? On the outside wall? Can we just escape? What exactly is around the front of the castle? Can I get a description of the prison from where we are, please?

Grumblejack smiles and says, "Grumblejack like smashing guards."

You stand on the outer curtain wall. A quick look over the edge reveals nothing but rocky shoals and fiercely crashing waves. Assuming you could safely get down there, only the strongest swimmer would have a chance of swimming to the shore around the other side of the castle and past the causeway safely. Most would surely be pulled under by the current and drown or be dashed into the sharp rocks.

Looking out over the prison, the Warden's Tower is next to you. Ahead, you see the roof of the Keep and, past that, the gatehouse and its two guards silhouetted on the roof. The wall continues round to the gatehouse, with smaller towers interspersed along it.

Branderscar is situated on what's essentially a large rock off the coast of Talingarde. Think Alcatraz, or Chateau d'It from the Count of Monte Cristo, except with a causeway connecting it to the mainland.

Got it! And what do we find on these guards? They are wearing armour as part of their uniform, right? What kind?

These guards have the same loot as the previous two. Each has a chain shirt, a longsword, a leather-wrapped club, a heavy steel shield, and a lockbox key.

Oh, and Grumblejack is at 8 hit points - he'd probably appreciate some healing, if you have any.

"The guards are always in pairs?" Jezabel clarifies. Then she sighs deeply. "If we've no other plans, I'll wear this trash."

Leaving the planning to others for now, Jezabel casts her eyes over Grumblejack's wounds. She runs a finger over his most bloody wound, and licks the blood off her finger. "Mmm. Want me to fix some of that?" she asks him.

Jezabel thrusts her arms out to the sides, hands open. She mutters under her breath and her body tenses. A green energy seems to manifest in the air around Jezabel, and flow into her open hands. Her eyes glow bright green along with her hands. Jezabel begins to sing gibberish softly. The green energy in her hands changes colour, to a warm yellow glow. Jezabel reaches out to touch Grumblejack's wounds and a sudden wave of calming, comforting warmth flows from her hands into the ogre's shoulder.

Jezabel uses a swift action to activate her conduit surge ability, using the ley-lines of the world to empower her spell. Then she casts cure light wounds on Grumblejack.

"Use it wiiiiiiisely," she sings to Grumblejack.

Turning back to the group, Jezabel begrudgingly starts to put on a whole bunch of useless equipment. She leaves the lockbox key for someone else to take.

"Can you stuff these dead bodies back into the tower window?" Jezabel asks Grumblejack curiously.

Anyone have a way to clean the bloodstains on the floor?

Geborah pulls a guard uniform on over her other clothes; she seems pleased by the extra protection the steel provides her. "According to our...informant, there were supposed to be three guards in this patrol, and three on the gatehouse roof. Since there are just two and two, the others are like to be at Blackerly's poker game at the gatehouse. Another reason to finish the two on the roof as quickly and quietly as we can."

She straps the dead man's weapons on, and grips his shield. "Tummies full, you two? Then over the wall the bodies go. Let the sea hide them."

"And you said you wanted to leave an impression!" Jezabel laughs with a shake of her head.

Already distracted by her new heavy burdens, Jezabel promptly forgets about the dead men and begins to sing a grumpy song about being constrained, and dragged down by weights unto death.

Clearly she is displeased with her new attire.

After climbing down the rope Wraith casts the magic to have the rope untied and brought down. Once back in the coil he hands it off to the person carrying it.

"Well that seemed painful," He comments towards the dead and dying guards.

Turning to the ones stripping off the uniforms. He doesn't even comment before helping to clean the blood off.

As the guards tumble off the wall, Wraith bids them fairwell with a final wave and what looks like an attempt to be mournful of their lost life. Once he sees them hit either the rocks below or the water, his smile returns before turning to the group.

"So which way first, I figure we're trying to clear the walls before the alarm is raised?"

Geborah gazes into the waves that swallowed the corpses, raising her hands in formal solemnity.

"Long after funeral bells ring for the bodies we leave behind, the families and friends of these we commit to the sea will search for their lost ones. Their forlorn hopes will dwindle, day by day, as they are haunted by their fears of all the things that might have befallen them. Were they tortured? Corrupted? Sacrificed? Eaten? Their imaginations will conjure worse fates than we could have arranged. A devil's trick; Alichino knows how to leave an impression."

"We'll go that way, the same way the patrol was going. If these two were the ones who were supposed to check on the cell guards, then the mess we left there might not be discovered until the morning meal."
