"Yes, he would." Sabina says flatly. "I'm glad to see you've chosen to support the Queen. It would be a shame if I had to punish you for treason." Her monotone voice leaves you wondering if she is joking or not.

Sabina inspects the brooch proffered by Ayako. "This is indeed the Queen's brooch. Hang onto it and I'll explain the procedure along the way. I've heard of this Gaedren Lamm. If you've dealt with him, you must be quite skilled. The Queen could use talents like yours during her transition."

"Follow me now." Sabina leads you into the castle entrance hall and continues talking as she walks.

The entrance hall is furnished with several side tables on which stand marble busts of previous seneschals, kings, and queens of Korvosa.

"Are you still training with...him, Sebastian?" You sense some venom in her tone with that statement. "I'd be interested in seeing how you'd fare against me some time. I'd have sought you out sooner myself but my position is very demanding. I'm sure you understand. Who are your friends? Are they trustworthy?"

Passing through the entrance hall, past another set of ornate double doors, you enter the antechamber. This room contains several memorabilia of the Arabasti family, such as the battle standard of the five kings and a set of jousting lances on a rack. You can see the throne room lies just ahead. Here she stops for a moment.

"How would you like to be introduced to the Queen?" she asks curtly. "Once I announce you, you will enter the throne room. The Queen will address you then you will hand me the brooch and I will present it to the Queen."

Sibling rivalry, Col thinks as he watches the exchange between Sebastian and his sister. It appears that Sebastian got all the personality in the family, he concludes.

You can announce me as Col Averton, he spits out terser than he intended.

Ayako, I have no last name.

Nadya listens to the exchange between Sebastian and Sabina with interest. At least we wound up with the friendlier one. And more tactful. By a whisker. She holds her tongue and tips her head when Sabina finally addresses her, "You may announce me as Nadya Dimineata."

"Hah!" Sebastian chuckles at his sister's feigned threats. Clearly, she must be taking her new responsibilities very seriously to adopt such a demeanor. "Well, of course I am. Who else should I train with if I'm to match your skill?" As they walk along, he briefs his sister on their escapade. "These three helped me bring down Lamm. Each of us are as loyal to the city and our new Queen as you, sister. I would trust them with my life. Indeed, without them, I'd have been dead twice over already!"

When prompted for an introduction, he considers giving a number of grandiose sobriquets, but ultimately decides that it would be better if he didn't embarrass his sister; she might never forgive him. "You may announce me as Sebastian Merrin, so long as you don't mean to deny our relationship," he says with a wink.

9:55 am – 3 Neth 4708 AR

Sabina slowly rubs a scar on her cheek. "You don't need him anymore." she simply states. As you all provide your names, she replies, "Very good." She then pauses in thought before saying to Sebastian, "I would never deny our relationship."

She rounds the corner and announces yor arrival with a loud, clear voice, "Presenting Sir Col Averton, Sir Sebastian Merrin, Lady Ayako, and Lady Nadya Dimineta returning the Queen's brooch as retrieved from the late Gaedren Lamm." She then steps aside to allow you to enter the throne room.

Queen Ileosa sits upon the Crimson Throne. She is a vision of celestial beauty despite the black mourning dress and veil she wears in honor of her husband's death. A small silver coffer sits in her lap. The throne room itself is pristine but strangely empty—an open area with a vaulted ceiling, stained glass windows of past kings and queens looking down from the eastern wall, and crimson tapestries hanging along the others. An immense fireplace offers additional light and heat to the hall, and a silk carpet provides a gently arching path to the throne's base. Sabina takes the brooch from Ayako, hands it over to her queen with a flourish, then takes up a position at the throne's left side as Ileosa addresses you.

"This brooch was stolen from me some time ago—I had not expected to see it again, truth be told. And yet, here on my darkest day, you come before me with kindness. The return of this brooch is much more than an honorable deed. It is inspiration. It is hope."

"I love Korvosa, as my husband did before me. His death has shocked the city as it has me, but I will not see his legacy destroyed in death, and I shall not see my city torn apart. All Korvosa stands at the precipice of a disaster wrought by her citizens—these riots cannot continue. You have already done my heart a great service in returning this bauble to me on this dark day, and you shall be rewarded. Yet, perhaps you can serve your city more."

"If you so choose, I shall have Sabina see to it that you have an escort of guards when you leave here—they can see to your safe journey to Citadel Volshyenek. I shall send word ahead of you to Field Marshal Cressida Kroft to let her know you are on the way—the Korvosan Guard is stretched thin, and it can certainly use the aid of heroes such as yourself. Now, I need to retire to my personal quarters—my grief has drained me. Again, I thank you for the kindness you have shown me, and I hope your days of serving the crown are only just beginning."

With this, the queen directs Sabina to hand over the reward for returning the brooch—the bodyguard swiftly does so, handing the small silver chest to Sebastian. Inside the red-velvet-lined interior rest 12 gold ingots imprinted with the royal seal of Korvosa—each bar is worth 100 gp.

Silver Chest - Appraise DC 20:

The chest itself is worth 50 gp.

At this point, Queen Ileosa excuses herself. With a whirl of the hem of her mourning dress, Queen Ileosa is gone from sight. Sabina escorts you back out of Castle Korvosa and asks, "Do you wish for me to arrange an escort to Citadel Volshynek? I'm sure you are capable of handling yourselves but formality requires the Queen to extend this courtesy to you."

Ayako silently stands as the queen says her speech, being given a personal audience by the queen is quite the feather in their caps and Ayako gives a small bow as the queen rewards them and then swishes off.

Looking at the silver bars, Ayako is somewhat overwhelmed. Even divided between them, the amount of gold would keep one fed and housed for quite some time.A generous gift for those who no doubt had very tight fiances just a day ago.

Nadya curtsies and bows her head, "Thank you your majesty. We greatly appreciate your generosity." Gods, who would have thought we would receive so rich a reward for merely returning a brooch. After leaving the castle, she glances at the others, "I think we're all capable of making our way back to the Citadel. As the queen said, your resources are stretched thin. We'll be all right."

Sebastian accepts the chest, bowing to the queen before the party makes their exit. At the gates, he begins to protest Nadya's refusal of the offered guard, but is quickly silenced by a sharp elbow in the side. Turning to his sister, he has to squint against the glare from her polished armor. "Farewell, Sabina. I hope I shall see you again soon, under less official circumstances. I'd love to cross steel with you again. I'll send Mother and Father your love, and if you'd drop by for dinner some time, I promise I'll act surprised."

Col simple nods his head at the queens generosity and job offer, What a difference a day makes. As he considers his change in fortune he can't help but worry as he considers the fickle nature of nobility and shakes his head, Today we are praised for or galentry tomorrow we could be hung for it.

10:00 am – 3 Neth 4708 AR

"Very good. Then safe journeys to you. Sebastian, dropping by home would be...difficult. Long live the Queen!"

Sabina closes the castle doors behind you leaving you at the top of the Great Ramp overlooking the city. From up here you can see plumes of smoke rising in a dozen different locations. A patrol of Sable Marines guide their hippogriffs through the sky hurriedly heading towards a distant location. A cool wind blows and the autumn sun casts the city in an amber red glow. Its almost peaceful looking at the chaos below but you all get the eerie sense that even greater changes are just on the horizon.

Once you descend the stairs and retrieve your gear, you once again stand at the base of Castle Korvosa, ready to head to your next destination.

M Human Investigator(Empiricist)/2, Init.+4, Percp.+9 (+10 vs. traps) HP 9/24, AC 17 Fort+2, Ref+7, Will+3

Does anyone else have any rich or powerful relatives they would like to tell us about? Col says exasperated. I'm just saying, the information might come in handy' he takes a deep breath and continues, it looks like the city has settled down a bit let's try to sell the stuff we got from Lamm. He looks at his companions shaking his head, at least your not a dull bunch as he walks toward the markets.

F Samsaran Witch (Cartomancer) Init +3, Per +0 HP 22/22, AC 12/12/10 (mage armor 16/12/14), Fort +2, Ref +3, Will +4

Nadya just shakes her head with a wry smile, "Rich and powerful relatives. No. Not even close. This is more wealth than I have seen in my entire life. Let's see if we can make a difference with it."

Ayako shakes her head at Col's question. Yes, let us sell what we have found and then see about our new opportunity.

2:10 pm – 3 Neth 4708 AR

You head to the markets to sell the valuables you've procured. Luckily, despite the riots it's mostly business as usual in Korvosa today. You pass a few storefronts that have been vandalized and have to avoid a conflict between an angry mob and the Korvosan guard at one point by doubling back down a different street but otherwise you encounter no troubles. The merchants of Korvosa are hardy folk and it will take more than this to deter them. As for the gold bars you acquired, you take them to the Bank of Abadar. There they exchange the bars for more practical currency and open each of you an account if you'd like.

Once that's completed, you head back to Citadel Volshyenek. The guards at the entrance inform you that you've been expected and wave you through. One guard escorts you into the central keep, where a harried and tired-looking woman rises from her desk to greet you—this is Field Marshal Cressida Kroft, an attractive, dark-haired human woman dressed in red armor.

"Welcome. Please have a seat and introduce yourselves." She indicates the chairs on the opposite side of her desk. After you sit and say your names, she continues.

"Ah yes—you are the ones sent by Queen Ileosa. Greetings—my name is Cressida, and heroes of your caliber are exactly what Korvosa needs now. You've been on the streets. You know better than me how bad things are out there. It's breaking my heart to see Korvosa tear herself apart like this. Every little bit of aid we can get from upstanding citizens like you helps. If you're willing, I'd very much like to retain your services as agents of the Guard. I don't need to say, of course, that you'll be well compensated for these services."

She waits for your approval to continue then goes on.

"Korvosa's got enough troubles as it is without my own men losing their way and going rogue. As much as it pains me to admit, though, this has happened several times already. Many guards have deserted their posts, more concerned about friends and family than the city. I can understand this, yet not all of the deserters have family—some of them are simply using the riots as an excuse for personal gain. One such man is Verik Vancaskerkin. Worse than a lone deserter, he's convinced a small group of fellow guards that Queen Ileosa is going to ruin the city. Whether she does or doesn't isn't the point—right now, we've got a city-wide crisis on our hands, and I need all of my guards working with me to see us through. A deserter is worse than a lost resource—it's an infection. I can't afford to pull any of my other patrols off duty to deal with Vancaskerkin, and I'd rather not expose any of them to him anyway, since I neither want Vancaskerkin to infect more guards with his talk of secession, nor do I want some overly patriotic guard killing Vancaskerkin outright. I need impartial, skilled talent. Like you."

"Vancaskerkin and his men have holed up in an abandoned butcher's shop up in Northgate—the place was called All the World's Meat. I need you to check out the place. Try to avoid killing any of the deserters if you can, but if you must, they brought it upon themselves when they threw in their lot with Vancaskerkin. For him, I'd really prefer it if you could capture him alive and return him to me for interrogation, but if he makes that impossible, I'll accept his body as well. Finally, see if you can find out why Verik deserted—if there's more to it than simple personal politics, I need to know immediately. Bring me Verik alive, and there's another thousand gold in it for you. Dead, he's only worth half that."

"Finally, should you accept, I'd like to offer you a spot in the Citadel barracks if you should need somewhere to stay the night or to rest. I'll also put in a good word with Theandra Darklight, the owner of the Three Rings Tavern in Five Corners for you. She should be able to extend you a line of credit so you have a place to sleep and eat while you're in the service of the Guard."

Bank of Abadar - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

More than just a temple to the god of cities, the Bank of Abadar also serves as the city's main bank. The temple serves every banking need, such as security boxes (said to be the safest in Varisia), saving and investment accounts, loans, and even writs of credit.

Beneath the temple, in well-guarded lead-lined chambers, the rumored Golden Vaults of Abadar house the Korvosan Mint. The mint creates all the coins issued by the city, of course, but it also helps to regulate the city's economy by buying back or releasing gold in an effort to counter inflation or recession.

Archbanker Darb Tuttle and the clerics of Abadar work closely with the ministers of City Hall, the arbiters of the Longacre Building, and the Field Marshal of the Korvosan Guard. They love their city and work from every legal angle to protect it and support its continued growth.

Cressida Kroft - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

Cressida holds the highest position in the Korvosan Guard, that of Field Marshall. She is quietly admired throughout the city as an effective and able leader, known to be fair and just.

Three Rings Tavern - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

This quiet tavern belongs to retired adventurer and former Pathfinder Theandra Darklight. Theandra earned enough coin as an adventurer to buy a decrepit tavern in Five Corners and fix up. A lithe beauty in her adventurous youth and starving childhood, Theandra took to the settled life with great gusto, and today she appears somewhere closer to matronly. Despite her indulgences, Theandra remains a good-natured and friendly person, ready to help a friend in need and always hungering for a tale of high adventure and daring-do. A few years ago, Theandra lost a few fingers when a bar brawl turned ugly, which led her to hire the half-Shoanti barbarian Tauk Par as a bouncer.

Theandra likes to keep her bar low-keyed and quiet, serving as much coffee and tea as mead and wine. Tauk Par watches over the place like a hawk, eyeing regulars and newcomers alike with the same barely concealed dislike. In addition to its extensive variety of beverages—alcoholic and not—Three Rings also gathers a regular breakfast clientele with its Varisian sweetbreads and Gebbite cream-filled pastries.

A very kind offer letting us stay at the barracks and the Three Rings.I think dealing with these deserters is indeed a fine thing to do. The disharmony they bring to the city must be dealt with.

Col's insinuation ruffles Sebastian's feathers. "Don't look at me like that! This is the first time I've even seen my sister since she took up at the castle."

At the Citadel, Sebastian listens to Cressida's offer, giving it fair consideration. He has mixed feelings about the Guard, but the coin was good and he's always liked the way he looked in red. He was going to help this city one way or the other, so why not get paid for it? "Vancaskerkin sounds like a scoundrel, a wild dog that needs to be brought to heel. You have my sword."

"Excellent!" declares Cressida. "Now if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Otherwise, I can have a guard show you around the barracks before you go." Cressida yawns widely. "Please excuse me. I haven't slept since King Eodred II's death. A priest of Abadar has been helping me fight back the fatigue, but it's taking its toll." She slouches down in her chair.

Ayako will silently accompany the others on the brief tour. She didn't really like it though, the quiet acolyte cells of the temple were so much better and the cots were about the same but wrapping herself in the darkness after a long day and just silently slipping off to sleep was more appealing than the tromp of boots early in the morning.

Col goes on the tour also but finds the barracks to spartan and militant for his liking.

2:40 pm – 3 Neth 4708 AR

The guard takes you around the Citadel. The halls are barren and cold and the Citadel currently only has a skeleton crew. Your echoing footsteps are the only sound heard. The barracks are simple bunks lining the walls. A dozen beds fit in a room with small lock boxes at the foots of the beds for your gear. You won't have a lot of privacy here, but at the same time, this is probably the safest place in Korvosa to rest for a night. At one point, you pass by the dungeon. It is packed full of angry citizens arrested during the riots. Giggles is there too, and chuckles and spits a curse at you as you pass.

The guard comments, "These rioters are all off to see the Hanging Judge tomorrow. I doubt she'll have any leniency against this treacherous bunch."

Once the tour is over, the guard leads you to the exit and dismisses himself. "It's good to have you aboard. Good day and good luck."

The Hanging Judge - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

Cold and stern to those who deserve her ire, Zenobia Zenderholm has a justifiably fearsome reputation for inflicting upon criminals some of the harshest (critics say unreasonable) sentences among all the city's arbiters. Criminals with access to wealth expend small fortunes on lawyers who can avoid having Zenobia try their cases. Even the most callous and hardened criminals quaver in fear when they face her, because they know they have lost their freedom (if not lives).

Zenobia has a softer side, however, and is not without compassion. She doles out relatively light penalties to those who commit crimes from desperation (such as stealing bread to feed a starving family). Despite this infrequent sympathy, Zenobia saves her true compassion for victims of crimes, volunteering her time to help ease the suffering of those she can.

In addition to her role as a senior arbiter, Zenobia also serves as a middle-ranking cleric of Abadar. Both of her roles frequently overlap, such that she uses divination magic to help her discern the truth in cases even as she provides priceless legal advice (for free) to clerics and devout worshipers of the god of cities. When she has time, she volunteers her legal services to the city's orphanages, as well as aiding them in finding suitable parents for their charges.

So, shall we investigate this meat store for our wayward guard?

M Human Investigator(Empiricist)/2, Init.+4, Percp.+9 (+10 vs. traps) HP 9/24, AC 17 Fort+2, Ref+7, Will+3

Yes, I think we've dallied enough, let's take care of this Verik.

3:40 pm – 3 Neth 4708 AR

Following Cressida's directions, you make your way up Harborview Boulevard then turn east to reach All the World's Meat at 22 Stirge Street.

The shop itself looks run down; the windows are boarded over; the paint is peeling off the exterior paneling. At a glance you'd assume the building was abandoned except for a wheezy man wearing chainmail that doesn't quite fit his ample frame standing cross-armed beside a sign bearing the image of a fat, smiling cow.

After a moment, a bell above the door tinkles as a haggard old man shambles out of the shop with a parcel of wrapped meat under his arm and makes his way down an opposite alleyway.

Around the west side of the building is a large cattle pen, open to the air, and the stink of manure, mud, and animal is strong, despite the breeze that wafts through the stockade's wooden fence. A single somber cow grazes the threadbare field. To the south stands a roofed shed containing a straw-filled wagon.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ayako suddenly has an urge to moos at the cow.
Moo..Maybe we should have one of us act as a customer to see how many others are inside?

Sounds like a good idea. We could also send two people in as a couple.

Ayako slips her arm into Sebastion's. I say we look sufficiently scruffy enough to be commoners in need of food.

The man outside glances Ayako and Sebastian up and down as they approach then gruffly calls out, "Kick off! We ain't got nothing for you."

Ayako puts on a sad expression. Oh please sir! we haven't been able to get our food because of the riots and heard that you had meat for sale Please let us buy some meat from you.

"Sod off! We're all out of meat. He got the last one." The man tilts his head toward the alley. "If your really hungry come back tomorrow morning. Don't be late; it goes fast. But if you're really hungry," he says makes a rude sexual gesture, "I'll make sure you get a piece. And lose the fop. He don't look desperate enough for our services." He insultingly waves off Sebastian.

What just happened? Before Sebastian could even protest, the entire incident was over. Somehow, in the space of thirty seconds, he'd been insulted twice - once for looking scruffy, and once for not looking scruffy enough, been in an arm link, had his shoulder cried on, failed his son Billy, and watched an oaf impugn his woman's honor. It was enough to make the poor boy's head spin.

"Why are we wasting time with all this subterfuge? Let's knock out the doorman, run in and capture Vancaskerkin and be done with it."

Sebastian shrugs non-committally. "I don't see what's stopping us. The sneaking around didn't do us much good at Lamm's place, anyway." Throwing a glance back over his shoulder at the place, he sizes it up. "What kind of force can he have in there? Five men? Six? Their guard's armor doesn't even fit properly!"

Well, I could lure him off to an alley for you and Col to ambush. I've been a prostitute briefly and thus can hopefully lure him over for you to bix his ears.

Ayako waits a little bit and then hurries over to the guard, looking all distraught as she sniffles.

Sir, I know that I should be ashamed of saying this but I am desperate. If you can let me just get some food..I'd be so grateful. Ayako tries using the gestures and glances that she learned at her brief time at the brothel, brushing lightly against his arm.

My husband will be so furious if he finds out, but this is more important then pride, it is for my son. She glances at the alley and then back to him.

The guard glances left and right to make sure no one else is around. Once satisfied, he straightens his posture and shifts his armor into place. "Well...I guess its both our lucky days, now ain't it."

He swings his ham-fisted left arm and opens the front door a crack. "Baldrago, I'm going for a piss. I won't be long."

He eyes Ayako greedily then before Ayako realizes what's happening, his large mitts are patting her down roughly. He shamelessly gropes at her as his hands move down her body. When he feels the sickle on her person, he stops. "Leave the weapon here and let's go. If your good, I'll have Parns prepare you one of his special cuts. Otherwise you get nothing. You and your bastard can starve in a gutter for all I care."

Ayako nods and leaves her sickle at the door, keeping her eyes downcast as she allows herself to be led away. She doesn't flinch, her mind already heading to faraway places as the words of the brothel owner came to mind to help numb the experiance of having to service less than well-kept men.

3:52 pm – 3 Neth 4708 AR

The man leads Ayako around the western side of the building and into the covered shed. He indicates for her to get on the straw-filled wagon and he utters a sinister laugh as slaps her painfully hard on the ass when she moves to do so. Then he removes his belt holding his longsword and crossbow and sets it aside in a corner. "Let's be quick about this. I'm not supposed to leave my post."
