Chapter Six: Crown of Fangs
Part Three: Legacy of Blood

Charisma Rerolls: A PC can spend a Harrow Point to reroll a Charisma-based check. She must abide by the new result (although if she has additional Harrow Points remaining, she can use them to attempt additional rerolls).

Destiny Shall Not Be Denied: A PC can spend a Harrow Point as an immediate action to force the GM to reroll a d20 roll. She must abide by the new result (although if she has additional Harrow Points remaining, she can use them to force additional rerolls).

Psychic Wrath: A PC with levels in a class that grants bonus spells based on her Charisma score can spend a Harrow Point to increase the power of a spell from that class’s spell list as she casts it. She increases the spell’s DC by 2 and gains a +4 bonus on caster level checks to overcome spell resistance and a +2 bonus on attack rolls for that spell.

Roll Card: Gain a +2 bonus on all Charisma-based checks. In addition, he treats his caster level as if it were 1 higher when casting spells gained from a class that grants bonus spells based on his Charisma score.

Lucien immediately steps to Sebastian's side, his hand on the greatsword behind his back. The paladin feels suffocating behind that strange mask belonging to the Queen's Physicians he's wearing as a part of the plan.

One can only ready an action after initiative is rolled, isn't it? If I'm wrong, then Lucien will draw his sword and ready an attack against the doctor if he does anything potentially harmful to the party or tries to call for help.

You can ready an action before initiative...although in this situation, Doctor Davaulus is also expecting trouble and readying an action to react to you so I guess it would go to initiative.

Doctor Davaulus stands up and steps around the desk. He speaks with an air of confidence and superiority.

"It appears you know more than I gave you credit for. Take off those ridiculous masks. Your deception may have gotten you this far but I see right through you. Why don't you give up your foolish crusade to save the city? If you feeble minds haven't figured it out, disease is the world's way to bring back balance. In order for civilization to grow and prosper, the parts of society that hold everything else back must be periodically pruned." He raised his hands triumphantly. "Korvosa will be stronger at the end of these dark days - a place you and I would be proud to call home! That is, if you buffoons don't ruin everything."

Doctor Davaulus does have a rapier at his side but has not moved to draw it.

This is note a debate on logic or faith. I don't expect you to surrender, so why don't we stop wasting each other's time?

Sebastian is momentarily stunned into silence. He wasn't sure what he had expected, but Davaulus's bold-faced confession caught him unawares. Luckily for him, Ayako speaks up, and he cedes the interaction to her. Standing with his rapier ready, his mask grins in comic defiance of the situation's gravity.

What do they think is going to happen we knock him out, try to get him past the maidens, and the queen gives us a reward for making her look unwise? That is if she even believes us. I doubt that is going to happen. We're more likely to disappear.{/i]

"How can you treat people like you are doing here? Even if you are working to bring "balance" to the city, you don't have the right to do that." She glances back into the room to make sure the Maiden's aren't heading their way. [i]The good doctor looks way to calm for having four angry people in his space.

No doubt he will say The Pallid Princess gave him the right as well as the queen and our feeble minds just can't understand it.

The Maidens are still where you left them.

"I not only have the right, Urgathoa demands it! And with the Queen backing our efforts, you have no hope of stopping us. But if you thing I'm foolish enough to try to fight four-against-one, you are indeed simpletons."

Doctor Davaulus begins to cast a spell.

Duration 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes

DESCRIPTION

You pin the target's shadow to its current location, causing the target to become entangled and preventing it from moving farther than 5 feet from its original position, as if its shadow were anchored to the terrain. Each round on its turn, the target can attempt a new saving throw to end the effect as a full-round action. A flying creature can only hover in place or fall while entangled in this manner. This spell automatically fails when cast on a creature that doesn’t throw a shadow, and it ends if the creature is entirely in an area with no illumination.

Lucien can barely hold the rage within his heart as the doctor spits venom on how disease could help the city. "Vile bastard!" he hisses through his teeth. "You...You won't get away with that, I swart on the Holy Father!" With his fist clenched, Lucien draws his greatsword. A spark of fiery rage fills his blue eyes. He lost a bethroted and a daughter to disease.

As soon as he can, Lucien launches himself at the doctor with his greatsword, trying to sever the man's head with a single, powerful blow.

Hold action to attack if he tries to cast another spell or take otherwise threatening action. And, assuming it gets triggered, I'll take a demoralize attempt while I'm at it.

Ayako prepares his sling. Iolana's ray flies over the doctor's shoulder and frosts the back wall instead.

"You dare defy the will of Urgathoa!? There is no surrendering in her eyes. If I am to die, then it is only to spread a pox to you and your families. Korvosa has no heroes."

Sebastian's eyes widen in surprise as the doctor draws his own blade and thrusts it with surgical precision. Sebastian's reflexes fail to ward off the attack, instead making good on a crucial opening at the cost of tasting the doctor's own steel. As he and the doctor pierce each others' flesh, he gasps in pain. "You'll be seeing your Princess soon, then," he croaks out between clenched teeth.

Lucien keeps attacking the doctor, fueled by a furious anger. "You won't get away with that!" he says as he tries to bring down his greatsword on the doctor. The paladin doesn't seem to be very focused on the combat, though, perhaps blinded by his own rage, and his attack is slower and much more predictable then he wanted to.

The doctor's eyes widen as Lucien swings his greatsword at his neck but he dodges the wild attack.

Round 3

However, Lucien's attack creates an opening the Sebastian takes advantage of and lands a mortal wound through Davaulus' stomach. Davaulus isn't intimidated by Sebastian's proclamation but clutches his abdomen all the same to keep his innards from spilling out.

Ayako's sling bullet destroys a...very familiar looking statue. How'd that get there?

Somehow the doctor is still standing but only momentarily. Iolana's ray of frost saps whatever energy he was hanging onto and he drops hard to the ground and starts bleeding out.

Combat over.

That's a work of art you've destroyed! I hope you're happy. IIRC there are actually multiple mentions of statues like that strewn around.

Ripping off his mask, Sebastian looks down at his fallen foe. His features soften as he realizes that the doctor isn't dead yet. Kneeling, he waves Ayako over. "Ayako, help! We can't let him die."

Do people want to keep him alive? Ayako gets ready to stabilize him.

Iolana looks confused. "Why can't we let him die? He's working with an evil goddess, and doing horrific experiments on people. He all but admitted he was responsible for the plague. I don't understand why you want to save him. As far as I'm concerned we can let him die, and Pharasma can sort him out."

Proof that the queen is behind this whole disaster? We could get the temples on our side.

Sebastian looks up from the body to address Iolana. "I'd rather not leave him here for his necromancer friends to find him. And we need to deliver him to Croft alive for questioning. You think an Urgathoan wouldn't know a way to resist a speak with the dead spell? Now hurry, there's no time for this!"

Ayako Stabilizes the 'doctor' and begins divesting him of his gear. We still have the guards outside to deal with, so we will have to strike quick.

M Human Swashbuckler 12 | Init +9 | Percp +9 | HP 93/93 | AC 27| Fort +9, Ref +16, Wil +6 |

Do we need Heal checks or a spell or something?

"We'll never get him out looking like this. If we can get him in one of those doctor outfits, two of us can sneak him out."

It might work. Of course, once he is discovered to be gone, what will the others do? They might flee and kill the sick. Ayako starts trying to put the doctor into a physician outfit.

It is a Heal check DC 15 to stabilize but I'll say Ayako succeeds.

You stabilize the Doctor Davaulus, remove his gear, and hide him under the cloak and mask of a Queen's Physician.

The doctor had the following items on him:

Sebastian nods, propping Davaulus's unconscious body up to get his arms into the sleeves of the long leather coat. "We'll have to come back for Ruan as soon as we get Davaulus to the Citadel." Once the coat is on, he forces the mask over the doctor's head, making sure to be rough about it.

After donning a doctor's costume for himself, Sebastian gets his shoulder under the doctor's arm to carry him. "Lucien, get his other side."

Ayako helps roll the bodies into Davaulu's office so there is no evidence of the fight. We should be ready for a fight though, I fear what will happen when the ruse is discovered.

Lucien helps Sebastian in carrying the doctor after donning a doctor's costume. He takes all of the remaining masks from the physicians. I'll have them destroyed as soon as possible, he says to himself as he makes a mental note not to destroy the mask before using them as evidences. "What's the plan with the guards outside? They won't just let us walk away with this unconscious body", he says nodding to the doctor's body.

We can keep him between us as we leave.

Ayako reconsiders. I think we are over thinking this. If we leave with the doctor, he will be found missing and no doubt this will cause a panic among the guards and they will no doubt flee and start killing the sick here. So, let us strike from surprise and take down the two outside the door and go after the rest. After that, we can alert Kroft and she can bring in the city guard to help secure the place. Then we can search at our leisure. Ayako nods at the door where that the two elite soldiers stand guard.

Are we taking the fight to them, or making a commotion to draw them to us? Either way, we can stow them in the office afterward.

"We'd better get on with it. The longer we wait, the greater chance that we'll be discovered." Dropping the Doctor unceremoniously, Sebastian pulls his grinning mask back over his face, preparing for the coming confrontation.

Let us bluff them inside, let them think the doctor has fainted. I if that fails, we can engage directly. Ayako will then cast Bless on the group

Ayako puts her doctor mask back on and arranges the doctor on the floor and then opens the door. Maidens, we need assistance! The doctor collapsed, help us tend to him while we get help.
