The wind in his hair and a feeling of freedom her never experienced before, Lucien's heart pounds fast as he rides the hippogriff. At the beginning, it's really hard for him to find the right way to ride the ill-tempered flying mount, but as minutes passes, he starts to make some progresses. Now that he's more confident in his flying skills, at least enough to not to have to look down every 5 seconds while praying his God to keep him safe, Lucien glances at Trinia. The girl, disguised as Ayako, is incredibly skilled and Lucien stares in admiration for a few seconds before moving closer to her with his hippogriff. Close enough to say "Hey! Look at you! You're pretty good at it!"

Someone observing the scene from a close spot would have noticed that Lucien is smiling as he speaks to Trinia. I feel so free...

Sebastian chuckles at Trinia's exuberance. "I'm sure there will be plenty of adventure for you, Trinia. You're a brave girl. But perhaps you should lay low for awhile first," he warns. "After all, you're a wanted woman," he says with a wink.

The same teacher! That means that, for all intents and purposes, Sebastian shared a fencing lineage with Blackjack! Perhaps one day I'll get to duel him!

Sebastian's hero-worship is interrupted by the arrival of the others. Once they're prepared, he bids Trinia goodbye and watches Lucien take off with barely-concealed jealousy.

At the gates, Sebastian is upset by the man's demeanor. "You don't recognize me? I am Sebastian Merrin! Hero of Korvosa?" As the Gray Maiden searches the cart, Sebastian starts to see what the others find so unnerving about them. In the mask and armor they stand like steely sentinels, and it's easy to forget that underneath each mask is a beautiful woman with zealous love for Korvosa beating in her heart. "Good evening," he says to her, tipping his feathered hat.

Above Korvosa

"Thank you. I'm surprising myself. It's so exhilarating. Ah! For the first time in a long time I feel so free. Don't you just wish we could stay up here with the stars forever?" Trinia smiles warmly at Lucien and moves her hippogriff closer to his as well.

"Ah, Sebastian and Nadya. Your names have been going around the Citadel. I didn't think I'd ever get to meet you at this out of the way post. Maiden, these people are okay. Leave them be." says one of the guard.

The Gray Maiden climbs up onto the cart and roughly handles each of you, tearing back any hood if you are wearing one, and grabbing you by the jaw and turning your face for better inspection. "No sign of disease. You are clear to go." she says simply before stepping aside to let you pass.

"Be careful out there." the guard calls as you pass through the gate. "I'm sure you are aware but Dwarfwalk road passes right by Thief Camp. Sczarni thugs have been more active lately. But I bet you can handle yourselves. I hear the Blood Veil has hit Thief Camp and Trail's End pretty hard. If one good thing were to come out of this plague is would be to rid Korvosa of those free-loading gypsies."

Despite the guards warning you travel about a mile up the road without incident. Once you are a safe distance away from the city you spot Lucien and Trinia waiting along the side of the road. Trinia leans comfortably against Lucien while chatting with him. When you pull up she excitedly waves you closer.

"Thank you so much for your help. I'm really sorry for any trouble I may have caused you. I promise I'll make it all up to you someday. But for now, I'm just eager to be away from the city that wants me dead."

Trinia gives both Sebastian and Lucian a quick kiss and playfully winks as she hops up onto the cart. It is clear she fancies the men, but it is unclear of who she favors more; perhaps both?

Thief Camp - Knowledge (Local) DC 5:

Located outside the city walls and not a part of the city of Korvosa is the settlement called Thief Camp. It’s known by this name by proper Korvosans and by its residents alike. Thief Camp started as a shantytown populated by those too poor even to afford a place in Bridgefront in Old Korvosa. While many of its buildings can still properly be called shacks or shantes, in the past two decades, many residents have built more permanent houses and businesses of sturdy wood, or even brick. While Sable Company and the occasional Hellknight will sporadically patrol the area, Thief Camp is mostly on its own for protection— and the organization most able to provide this service is the Cerulean Society. The Society funds blue-clad mercenaries to protect those properties whose owners deign to pay for the privilege, ignoring most everything else. Othewise, gangs protect their own turf.

Thief Camp is technically outside of the city’s jurisdiction, so Korvosa does not tax properties there. However, any trade to Korvosa proper is considered to be external, and is subject to import duties. Fishing is the leading industry. A strong secondary industry is pottery, as the banks of the Jeggare River here are rich in fine clay deposits. A third leading industry is less-than-legal, as Sczarni find doing business just outside of Korvosa significantly easier than within its walls. Thief Camp is the easiest place to find all sorts of contraband items, whether it’s drugs, poisons, illegal magic, or slaves.

Most residents of Thief Camp are displaced Shoanti or Varisians— the latter mostly Sczarni. Other “undesirables” also live in Thief Camp, including a not-insignificant number of tieflings, orcs, and ogrekin, most of whom keep to themselves. The road into Korvosa that runs by Thief Camp is usally lined with tents and stalls offering foodstuffs, trinkets, games of chance, fortune telling, and cheap but strong wine. Many of these merchants have a reputation of being swindlers and con artists.

Harse - Knowledge (Local) or (History) DC 10:

Sarwin Harse honored her father in 4536 by founding a village at the confluence of the Sarwin and Falcon rivers. Harse quickly became an important stopping place for dwarven merchants heading for Palin’s Cove and Veldraine, although it proves too far out of the way for the convoys passing between Janderhoff and Korvosa. Most importantly, though, Harse serves as a gateway to Korvosa’s other inland holdings, allowing it to prosper.

Nadya seethes at the Grey Maiden's rough manner and the guard's words, but bites back a response knowing it would only endanger the mission. As soon as the inspection is over, she pulls her cloak back up and moves beyond the gates. Once the three companions are a safe distance away she adds, "That was unnecessary. The guard was ignorant, but there was no need for her roughness. I don't like the direction things are headed with this plague and the changes underway. Let's finish here and maybe Lucien and Ayako will have some luck with the river in spite of the muck."

Sebastian's demeanor brightens at the recognition. "We don't often have much call to come out to the gates. You do good work out here, keeping the city safe. Perhaps we should do a tour of relief duty one of these days to show our appreciation." Despite the rough treatment, he gives the Gray Maiden a friendly salute and a wink. "Regards to my sister and her fellow Maidens."

Once beyond the gates, he grins at Nadya. "Come now, it wasn't so bad. They probably deal with a lot of ugliness out here these days. This plague is starting to sound serious."

Turning the cart over to Trinia, Sebastian is surprised by the kiss. He glances sidelong at Lucien and raises an eyebrow, gauging the other man's reaction.

Planning the rest of the mission, Sebastian reviews the facts they have. "The plague is being spread by coins carried in by a ghost ship on the river. Can we stop the coins from circulating? Some among us have some... concerns about the Queen's Physicians and their hospice, so it bears investigating, doesn't it?"

I fear it is too late to stop the coins. They were spent by Brienna and are in circulation. We should prepare for going underwater. Spears and daggers perhaps.

"I don't know. Getting to the wreck is going to be difficult. We don't even know where it is yet. I think we should investigate the hospice. And maybe see if we can learn more about how the disease is spreading and how to slow it down. Do you think it all came from the one box of coins?"

Perhaps there were others that were found. We can try to locate the wreck by air and then see about magic to get us down to the wreck.

You wait on the road for a few minutes as Trinia trails away into the distance waving goodbye as she goes. Once she is out of sight, you double up on the hippogriffs and return back to the city. You spend some time flying over the river but it is as Marcus said: it is too dark to see anything below the surface. When you are ready, you return the hippogriffs to the Great Tower and head back to the Three Rings Taverns to sleep off the remaining night.

The Three Rings Tavern
2:00 am – 5 Abadius 4709 AR

When you get back to the tavern, the owner Theandra stops you with a warning. "Welcome back. Out late tonight, eh? Just be careful out there. Some of the people of Korvosa have taken to blaming the wererats that dwell in the sewers for the plague. Just tonight a mob of Midland citizens discovered a foolish, alley-prowling wererat and publicly executed him with a silver axe. A few drunken dockworkers at my bar heard the story and left to brave the sewers to hunt the wererats, blaming their problems on the lycanthropes. I fear their misguided violence and fear is going to get some of them killed but I couldn't stop them. Take my word for it. It's just one more thing you don't want to get caught up in if you can avoid it."

The Vaults (Sewers) - Knowledge (Local) DC 10:

The Shoanti who lived in Korvosa prior to its Chelaxian colonization dug squared ditches into the earth to bury their kings, warriors, and other elites. Over these trenches they placed stone slabs found near the shale cliffs along the bayfront. They then covered these slabs with low mounds of earth, leaving only the narrowest of openings to allow for the later internment of additional people of importance. Dozens of these mound trenches cover Garrison Hill and scores more cover Citadel Hill and the lowlands surrounding Korvosa.

When the Chelish colonists began exploring the area on which they founded their city, they quickly discovered the hollow nature of these burial mounds. As the settlers expanded their city, they slowly connected many of these trenches, paying their dwarven allies to dig tunnels between them all. Without any regard to the dead Shoanti buried there, the Korvosans then made these tunnels into sewers. Today, the sewers under much of mainland Korvosa make little sense, making random turns and possessing numerous festering dead ends, thanks to the haphazard layout of the Shoanti burial mounds.

You wake up rested the next morning. You come downstairs to a surprisingly cheerful crowd. You overhear some of them talking that a cure has been found. A woman named Vendra Loaggri claims to has discovered a cure and is selling it from her shop in the Heights called Lavendar's Luxuriant Liniments.

Zellara gives Nadya another mental urging that now would be a good time to perform a harrowing.

Lavendar's Luxuriant Liniments - Knowledge Local (DC 10):

Lavender, one of the better-known and noted perfume boutiques in Korvosa, stands amid a row of tightly packed shops just off of Summoning Street. Owned by an opportunistic Chelaxian woman named Vendra Loaggri, the perfumery has always had a reputation for avant garde creations and brazen promotions—infamous memories of the "Free Imp with Every Purchase" stunt still linger among residents of the Heights.

As soon as they land safely out of town, Lucien spends almost all of his time chatting with Trinia about mundane topics. Everything happened so quickly since they left Korvosa. He found the girl quite to his likings, at least as a friend. She was bright, joyful and pleasant. Perhaps a little to rebellious, but no one can be perfect, after all.

As soon as his companions arrives, Lucien smiles at them and greets each one separately shaking hands with them. "Well met. Hope everything went off without a hitch."

When Trinia takes her leave, Lucien shakes his hand with her as well. But when she kisses him, Lucien cannot avoid to blush. For a few moments, he does not speak. Then, regaining his composure, he greets the girl. "Farewell, milady. Please, take care of yourself. Oh, and also...I know it's hard for you to consider what I'm going to say to you in a good perspective, but...Remember that it's not your city that wants you dead. There are some people in that city that want you dead. But Korvosa is not its government. Korvosa is its people. Us included. So don't be so harsh to your home town."

When the girl takes the leave, Lucien looks to Sebastian and breaks into a laughter. "Do you think she's playing with us, that girl? What a type!

As Threandra greets them, Lucien nods: "Yes, quite late indeed."

Then the tavern owner goes on, telling them about the citizens taking to blame the wererats dwelling in the sewers for the plague. Executions, hunting and madness followed. Lucien shakes his head with concern as he hears the latest news. Then, with a resolute voice, he speaks. "Misguided violence, fear, plague and dark schemes. This city is quickly descending into madness. Nothing we can do about those wererats, anyway."

Lavender
1:30 pm – 5 Abadius 4709 AR
Weather: Sunny and Cold

Nadya performs a harrowing with the spirit of Zellara's help and then you leave to pay a visit to Lavender to investigate this so-called cure.

Apologies, I got a little mixed up in the last post. The shop's name is just Lavender. The elixer she is selling is called Lavender's Luxuriant Liniment.

When you arrive, a queue of eager Korvosans stands in a line that stretches nearly four blocks from the perfumery's distinctive amethyst shaded windows. Many of these people look healthy, but several bear the obvious hacking, blistered symptoms of blood veil. The line threads through the street and into the store, where customers wait for a chance to purchase a dose of Lavender's Luxuriant Liniment.

After about an hour wait on line, you finally get inside.

A menagerie of heady scents twists throughout the cramped but stylish perfumery. A dizzying assortment of bottles—from gaudy ceramic containers to graceful crystalline vials—lines a variety of lace- and ribbon-strewn tables, shelves, racks, and an eye-catching display in the wide front window. Across from the front door's orchid-tinted glass panes runs a long counter, stacked high with hundreds of simple clay phials bearing round, magenta stoppers. Behind the counter, violet flourishes swoop across a sign reading, "Lavender's Luxuriant Liniment: Either You've Got It, or You've Had It."

Vendra greets each new customer from behind the shop counter, leaving the actual sales to two pretty young shop girls. Two large, well-dressed men with purple cravats discreetly hold saps and keep their eyes on the shop's patrons, ready to put down any trouble at a nod from Vendra. A line of customers stretch from the door to the counter.

A middle-aged dockworker mills about the shop browsing the perfumes. When he sees you enter the shop, he approaches you. "The name's Solt Carmino. I can personally testify that Lavender's Luxuriant Liniment not only cured my plague, but it soothes the pain in my bum leg. I'm here today to purchase another dose. I'm sure you've seen the line. You better get yours while supplies last. You don't look sick. Getting your cures ahead of time, are you? Very wise. The Blood Veil can strike when you least expect it. It's best not to be caught unprepared."

Perception DC 18:

For what its worth, you notice that Solt is the only person who seems to be browsing the perfumes.

Lucien patiently waits for his turn, respecing the line as a dutiful soldier. When his group finally gets inside, his eyes look around curiously, although he has seen that shop many times. He smiles to one of the shop girls, who used to be one of his dead wife's best friends. His smile is a little sad, however, since seeing her wife's young friend reminded him of his loss.

The approaching dockworker claims Lucien's attention to more pressing matters. At first, Lucien listens to the man with respectful attention, but as the man continues his speech, a suspicion starts to crawl into his mind. What if he's lying? What if Lady Vendra just hired him to promote her wares?

After escorting the others back to the Three Rings, Sebastian returns home, promising to return the next morning for breakfast before setting out.

Have Sebastian's parents contracted blood veil?

The next morning at the shop, Sebastian sizes up the crowd. "She seems to be doing good business. I hope for the city's sake it's a real cure."

As they wait to purchase some of the Luxurious Liniment, Sebastian joins Ayako in browsing the shelves. A number of the scents seem to come from Vudra, no doubt thanks to House Arkona. Picking up an amber bottle, he reads the label. Virile Vudrani - Woody, spicy and enduring, Vudrani Sandalwood is a classic, utterly masculine fragrance with the addition of spicy notes of cypress, zesty bergamot and vetiver with a hint of fine lavender accords. Ayako's poke pulls him back to the moment. "Huh? Oh! Yes, I think I shall."

Ayako whispers to Sebastion. Perhaps have a vial checked out with an alchemist. Or ask the Abdarian temple if they can determine if it is genuine.

You make your way to the counter where one of the girls offers you the elixir. "That will be two gold each. Will there be anything else?" she says with a smile and proffers a clay phial with a magenta stopper.

Assuming you accept, you receive one dose of Vendra's cure-all, a pleasant-smelling oily fluid with a bitter taste.

Sebastian's parents have not contracted the blood veil yet.

Unable to tell if the man is just promoting Lavender's wares, Lucien shrugs and answers to him. "It seems like this Luxuriant Liniment is a true miracle cure, then. Can't wait to test it firsthand".

Solt replies to Lucien. "Oh it most certainly is a miracle. Who would have thought that Vendra Loaggri would be our savior in these dark times, but she truly has come through for the people of Korvosa. If only every citizen would purchase just one vial, the plague would be over."

Knowing that he can always come back later to purchase another dose of the Luxurious Liniment, and being aware the he's personally immune to diseases thanks to his God protection, Lucien does not buy the cure-all liniment, refusing to fund that which he perceives as a non-violent robbery to the expenses of Korvosa's citizens. He's not completely sure about that, however, but he has been thaught to always follow his heart in situations like these.

Seeing that both Ayako and Sebastian have bought a vial of the Luxurious Liniment, Lucien nods to them, and as he approaches to his allies he whispers, "Alright, we've got what we needed. Now, we should examine this cure-all liniment. I must confess I'm doubtful about his healing properties, but we will test it personally. Let's get out of here, so we can test the liniment as soon as possible."

As they leave, Ayako goes back to her normal voice. Well non of us are sick so we can't test it on ourselves. I am uncomfortable giving it to someone with the sickness since it if it is a fraud, we give them false hope and can make them get worse since they will have to wait and get sicker. Col has set up a small shop in North Point. When you arrive he is busy brewing some new potions with his adopted son, Col Jr.

"Welcome friends. Its been a while. I'm glad to see you again. But you don't seem to be here just to visit. What can I help you with?"

The elixir does not detect magic.

Good to see you again as well, Cole. Ayako produces the vials. We purchased these at Lavender's where they were sold as Lavender's Luxuriant Liniment, a cure-all that can supposedly even cure the sickness that is going around. We would like you to examine it to see if it has any properties related to healing so we can determine if is a fraud. We also plan on heading to the Abadarian temple for a divination.

4:00 pm – 5 Abadius 4709 AR

It takes Col an hour to distill the liquid into its components. He chats idly while he works and catches up on how you've been. He casually mentions that some of his potions keep disappearing and he hasn't been able to figure out how it is happening yet. Once the process is complete, he informs you, "I regret to inform you that Lavender's Luxurious Liniment is nothing more than river water, sugar, and perfume. I doubt this will cure anyone of anything. In fact, if the water is coming from the Jeggare, it might even make some people sick. I think you should inform the church of Abadar of this fraud and figure out a way to shut down this operation."

We certainly will. In fact, this might be enough to allow us to investigate. She looks at Lucian. An official investigation after hours.

"Rest assured we will, Col" says Lucien with a bitter smile. "What you say is right, milady" he then says to Ayako. "But I would like to hear from the Temple first. Not that I don't trust our friend Col, here. It's just...You know, we need an official judgement on this matter before we can even start to investigate. Even though I agree on the fact that this fraud should be stopped as soon as possible."

Lucien looks to his allies with a resolute expression. "Shall we go? Every second we waste, the good people of Korvosa spend their money on this useless concoction, which - if our friend Col, here, is right - could result in even more people getting sick."

Indeed, thank you Col. Perhaps a quick report on what you found? Ayako will head otu with the others.
To the temple of Abbydar!

Bank of Abadar
4:15 pm – 5 Abadius 4709 AR

The Bank of Abadar is not far from Col's shop and you make it there in no time. Luckily, there is no mob outside the church today and you easily get inside. You meet with the cleric, Ishani, and explain the situation to him.

"I am glad you brought this to my attention. Even though the churches are overwhelmed and don't have the resources to cure the populace on their own, we can't have people providing false hope or cures either. It will only make the situation worse. If you'd be willing to go back tonight to observe the full extent of Vendra's operation and report back to me, the church can offer you a 1,000 gold reward. If we bring the evidence to the Field Marshall, she can shut the place down for good."

Indeed we shall. Lucian, I believe this will allow you to investigate without violating any laws.

Lavender
9:00 pm – 5 Abadius 4709 AR
Night

You return to Lavender and observe from outside. The man you talked to inside, Solt Carmino, is still hanging around inside, which supports Lucien's hunch that he is hired by Vendra. He leaves around 7 pm when the crowd dies down and the shop closes at 8. Vendra, the two female cashiers, and two male guards head outside. Outside the door, Vendra taps a wand on each of them and then heads around the back alley and into what might be an apartment. The two women leave, probably going home. One of the men remains outside the door to stand guard at night. The other goes into the same room that Vendra entered and leaves heading north with a large barrel. After about an hour, that same man returns with the barrel and goes back into the apartment.

Well then, shall we subdue the man outside and investigate? Perhaps a sleep spell from Nadya.

As they stand and watch, Sebastian leans against a wall, playing a silver shield back and forth across his knuckles. His months in the guard have done little to teach him patience for these sorts of operations. The long waiting is broken up by a few moments of action, but it's nothing terribly interesting.

"We could always lure him away with a distraction," he responds to Ayako. "Maybe Billy isn't as well as we'd hoped?"

I'm a little rusty but I could give it a try.

Ayako jumps into a side alley and there is a quick rustle as she transforms into Streetwalker Ayako! She sashays up to the man.

Well hello there. Pretty cold night to be all alone here, If ya give me a few moments of your time, you're night will be so much more bearable.

Sebastian watches, surprised and...captivated. It's a good thing Billy isn't here to see this.

Lucien's personal belief about Vendra seems to grow more true as time passes. Anyway, the paladin is not so convinced of subduing the men outside Vendra house. He witnesses Ayako attempt with embarassed concern, not endorsing her methods, but neither willing to stop her.

If Ayako attempt fails

Lucien comes closer to the men and smiles confidently. "Good evening gentlemen. I'm Lucien Endrin, and those you can see behind me are my friends. We'd like to talk with Vendra, whose apartment you're apparently watching over. We would like you to inform her that we would like to talk to her in private. We'll respectfully wait here for an answer". Lucien smiles again: his honeyed tongue talked with respect and savoir-faire. His badge of honor, recently earned from Cressida, shines in the night sky.

If this is enough to make their attitude toward Lucien improve by at least one step, Lucien will use Diplomacy again until they are at least friendly. I don't know their starting attitude, so I'll go on and roll a few checks. Lucien will stop as soon as he sees they're made friendly.

If he manages to make them friendly, Lucien uses Diplomacy to make a request (meeting with Vendra) to the guards.

Ayako approaches the guard with her offer. The guard sneers and backhands her.

"Be gone, wench! I don't have time for your kind. Get back to Thief Camp where you belong. There's enough disease going around without you spreading it."

The guard's mannerisms indicate that he might be more interested in men.

You can't change an NPCs attitude with Diplomacy more than once in a 24 hour period. On Lucien's second attempt, the guard's attitude changes from unfriendly to indifferent.

In response to Lucien's sweet-talking, he simply shrugs. "Vendra doesn't take night calls. Why don't you wait until the shop opens and talk to her then? Since you are a man of such fine standing, I'll even let you cut to the head of the line."

He clearly appreciates Lucien's fine dress and badge.

Lucien smirks unpleased by the outcome of his attempt, but still manages to hold his nerves and answers calmly to the guard. "Much obliged, sir, but I'm not going to come back tomorrow, head of the line or not. Rather, pay attention to my word for a second. I'm not asking you to see Vendra, sir. I'm just asking you to deliver a message to her from me. Then she'll be completely free to refuse to see me if she doesn't think it's appropriate. But believe me, she will accept. I'm here to warn her about an incoming danger that could threaten her activity. If this is not the case, you have my word as a gentlemen that I will leave without disturbing you nice people any longer. Agreed?"

If she does not accept to see us, we shall go to the Korvosan Guard and report everything to them. I suppose that would be much easier, even though it would deprive us of the chance to speak with Madam Vendra personally and...learn more about this matter.
