Male Human (Michigander) GM/1 Tactical - Where on Golarion - CLW Charges: 0

Thanks for checking in! This game is by special invite only. Please make sure to check in to the Gameplay thread so that the campaign shows up on your list. An in-character introduction post (continued from GM Damo's original thread) would be appreciated, but a simple OOC dot is ok if necessary.

This game is currently planned to kick off by the end of September.

Male Human (Michigander) GM/1 Tactical - Where on Golarion - CLW Charges: 0

Welcome to the discussion thread officially! This is a Play by Post session of #5-08, The Confirmation for Play by Post Gameday 4.

Congrats on being selected from the recruitment! I, GM_PapaSteve, will be your host and guide through this evergreen scenario.

Thought many of you have played before and some of you have played PFS specifically, the joy that is collaborative storytelling by Play by Post is mostly fresh. While I admit that it isn't for everyone, it is my humble opinion that PbP is the most immersive and fun role-playing, story writing, story reading experience that you can get.

A little bit of info about myself. I have been gaming off and on for about 25ish years. I have had an unhealthy addiction to RA Salvatore (don't judge) and WOW and have overcome* them both. I love the Role and the Roll of gaming, but what makes it the most fun is the friendships I have created from this fun game.

*By deciding that I liked being married more than I liked raiding and endless dailies.

I am an Engineer by education and trade, and therefore disavow any and all spelling and grammar errors. I will however correct** you on the occasion I actually know what I am talking about.

**It is COULDN'T care less. Not could, couldn't.

I live in Michigan and I am a rabid baseball and football fan. If you don't like the fact that Michigan State is ranked #2 in the AP polls, just remember that I am the GM. /grin

I occasionally ramble, I probably post way to often (though Damo has me beat, to my eternal chagrin) and I am really looking forward to taking you through your character's Confirmation, and in a way, your personal PbP Confirmation. I hope you have fun, please don't hesitate to bring up any questions or concerns to me if you have them. In the end, the point of this whole blasted thing is to have fun. So lets do it! Jump into the Gameplay thread and lets get this party started.

Actually, Steve, speaking as a Tengu with advanced linguistic skills, I feel I must point out that the phrase "I could care less" is commonly accepted vernacular, especially among the younger generation.

Also, it holds some grammatical validity. If one is delivering the message with sarcasm and contempt, it might go something akin to: "Ugh, Becky! Like, did you even just say that? For reals? Ugh. I could care less about grammar. But, like, I can't even right now. It's like totes beneath me to, like, put in the effort that would, like, be required to care less about it. So anyways, why don't you just, like, crawl back over to the nerd table where you belong."

---

Thanks for having me on board, Steve, and thanks a heap for running this for the confirmation-ites!

Male Human (Michigander) GM/1 Tactical - Where on Golarion - CLW Charges: 0

Ah-Ha! See, you used it in its proper grammatical structure!

If you could care less, then you have room to go down on the scale of caring. In your example, you clearly stated that you, in fact, care a certain amount, but don't want to go down that scale.

Most people use it to mean that they care not at all, in which case, it is used incorrectly. Just because it is commonly accepted doesn't mean it is right!

--

You are most welcome! Glad to be on board, thanks for prodding me to do it. It was invevitable anyways. Looking forward to it!

Male Tengu Level 2, #-8

Heh. It is also commonly used, and just like being "nauseous" instead of "nauseated", common usage often dictates correctness over time. Also like f*cking "aluminum". Don't get me started on that!

So, enough about syntax.

Nbu T'ka's introduction:

Nbu T'ka has been a constant presence in classes during the two years of Pathfinder training. He proved adept at Swords, Spells and Scrolls. He was an avid listener, but tended to stay out of the way most of the time. Shyness was a constant issue for the Tengu.

Still, all the initiates should remember him from class and will no doubt remember the unnecessarily long answer Nbu T'ka tended to give, punctuated with his *squawk*s. While some felt he was trying to show off, really the Tengu was just unsure of himself. His long answers were an attempt to give as much information as possible in the hope that some of it would be the right response.

He is eager to become a true field agent, however, and actually visit the places that he has longed to see all of his life. Still, he is exceptionally frightened of traveling on a ship and counts himself lucky that he has not yet had to travel that way (he spent the last of his gold to take a flying carpet from Katheer to Absalom).

Hello! Thank you very much for the selection and show of good faith in doing so. I'm looking forward to playing with everyone and I hope that I don't disappoint. Unfortunately, I'm about to head out the door to work so it'll likely be later in the evening today before I'll be able to do a proper post in Gameplay.

(P.S. Did you know that you can post in a thread, such as Gameplay, and then immediately delete the post so the campaign will show up on your list? It's great in cases like this where I want to keep track of the thread but can't do a proper post right away, but also don't want to clutter Gameplay with "dot" posts!)

I've seen that before. It's very annoying for when you actually post in the wrong thread or accidentally posting with the wrong character... but I've never seen it used for dots before! Cool.

Sticking my nose in here before I go to work as well (especially since I can't post from my phone). Usually when I start something new like this, my usual tactic is mainly to try not to embarrass myself, which I think I performed that task well enough.

Edit: ugh... I used Nella'so trick and accidentally put my base account in... bah.

Welcome Nella and Lissa!

No worries about using the wrong alias in the gameplay thread, I can fix that for you once we get rolling. (I could fix it now, but it would put the thread in your inactive list)

I never put two and two together about dotting then deleting... what a great idea! I will definitely use that in the future.

Once everyone has a chance to roll into this thread we can get things started. I put the ball in your court to start gently, and Nbu T'ka gave you something to go off of. I'll do my best to respond as you begin to feel out the scenario beginning, and we will likely kick things off in earnest tonight or tomorrow morning.

Again, welcome!

Hey all!

After about 10 hours sleep i think I've recovered from my 4 game PFS marathon weekend in Scotland now!

While i slept i got selected for group 2, so that was something good to wake up to.

Thank you @GM_PapaSteve for GMing for us!

I have a background in maths and sciency stuff. I sometimes find that my English writing skills aren't always as good as they could be. I will, however, do my best to keep things interesting.

I'm English, so that *MUST* make my version of the language correct, right? ;)

I'm from Manchester, England. The time difference may sometimes mean i post at strange times compared to others or miss a few posts over night, but i'll certainly catch up when i wake up.

See you all in the gameplay thread!

@Nella: Sorry, I had removed your character, but as it turns out there's a "players" list also! Got you off that also (as well as everyone else I needed to). Let me know if it didn't work.

As for the pre-game... it totally never happened! It wasn't part of PFS sanctioned play at all, so all of your characters have full HP, full dailies, full everything that you normally get at the beginning of a scenario.

This...

Also, if you aren't familiar with Play by Post Gameday, see this little tidbit from the Pathfinder Society online page.

Essentially we play a game that must finish before December 20th (should be no problem) and we all get a chance to roll for boons. (a roll which I will make for you at the end of the scenario in the discussion thread) There is also a GI Joe character submission contest that has more information in that link for a chance to win Paizo gift cards.

In the end its just a fun little thing that gives all of us an opportunity to get a bonus for playing a game we all enjoy playing anyways. Normally I would get chronicle information at the end of the scenario, but because it is PbP Gameday, I need to collect it early for reporting reasons.

* PFS allows rebuilding of characters up until they're played at level two. I prefer to 'officially' buy my gear when a character has 3XP and I've 100% locked in their class and gear. I have collated all of your initiative checks. I will be rolling these for you when and as combat begins. Please look over your roll and let me know if I've got your bonus right. Also let me know if there are any situational modifiers I should be aware of (eg. "may always act in the surprise round", "+2 if my familiar is near", etc).

Initiative rolls:

Kajar initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Lissa initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Luthor initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Nbu T'ka initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
Nella initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Shuo initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Big thanks to GM Damo for the assist on this as well!

Additionally - As per the convention that GM Damo has developed and uses, I will be rolling things like saves and such for you. I have your info from your taglines, so when it is appropriate I will roll the save for you in a post to help speed up the gameplay. If for some reason I get a bonus wrong please just let me know and I will make sure we get it corrected!

As we kick things off I just want to say again that I am really looking forward to this, and I hope you all have a great time!

Thanks Shuo! I have it fixed in my notes.

Just a quick note for everyone. Based on some great advice from people who know, and also based on my own personal experience, I am going to try to push the pace of this game just slightly.

Please do not hesitate to speak up if you feel you are being left out/behind by this pace! I will do my best to be up-front with what to expect. I would rather keep things moving and slow down then have to try to accelerate the ship. (nearly a direct quote from painlord's guide, linked above)

With that said, I will give Kajar the opportunity to share what he knows until this evening, as well as any other additional questions you might have. (Note that Nbu T'ka has a few, but is holding off in effort to allow people new to the scenario a chance to experience this initial Q&A session.) I will move things along this evening so all of you have an opportunity to begin to respond to the next step overnight tonight and tomorrow.

Regarding my own posting, I tend towards being a night owl so I'm more likely to post later in the day/evening than early. If I post early, it's likely either me squeaking in a post before work or posting during a slow moment at work.

Speaking of which, my work schedule varies from week to week; the only real consistency is that it's three 12 hour shifts each week. So there are some days where I may not be able to post until after I get home at night. No worries on speed though; I'll post responses to RP and such in flex-time spoilers if I need to :)

I will try very hard to make sure I get everyone in on all of the opportunities. I waited tonight hoping Kajar would post by at least the same time he posted last night, and, voila! Good timing.

My first PbP I was just so excited that I found myself refreshing every 10 minutes.

Shhh... they don't need to know that I still do that...

So my goal is to find a balance between slaking your newfound thirst, and not leaving anyone behind and feeling like they didn't get a chance to participate.

Everything is great so far. I will always welcome advice and comments. This game is for YOU! This is great fun for me if all of you are having great fun. Thanks for the comments :)

Should be fine after that, and no need for individual permissions (which also will require sign-in, which can suck for some folks accessing things from multiple devices... or if anyone is still living in the past and doesn't have a Google account).

Totally unintentional... :)

Whew - first proper combat post up, reacting to each of you and taking the swarms turns. Hopefully I did it justice, I want to make sure that I take into account all of the awesome work you are all doing on your posts.

Edit: Also, thanks again Damien for the tip, the map should be editable by all now, and won't require you to be signed in to google! So many little things....

Look for the bright side Lissa, you are building your luck... at any moment you will be rolling only 15+

I'm hoping that's true. If I can connect, I can do significant damage here, but connecting isn't something the dice roller wants me to do.

@ GM Damo Thanks for the borrowed gear heads up in the gameplay thread. Does PFS discourage sharing gear? My table games often share resources, which is why I asked about it.

So there is an element of bad luck so far. This encounter is a random roll, but you certainly have the firepower to take the swarms out.

I'll get the next round posted tomorrow morning, sorry I can't get to it tonight!

@Kajar: PFS doesn't discourage it during a scenario, but you can't give someone gear to last them beyond the scenario. If you use someone else's potion, alchemist's fire, wand charge, whatever... it's gone and you can't replace it for them. (because the only way to acquire gear is with chronicle gold). It tends to mean that players can get more possessive about their stuff, and certainly means that you can't just assume they'll share it; after all, they've paid for it, you've got no way to pay them back and you may never ever game with them again.

Personally, I usually share whatever I can to get the scenario complete... but even then, at some PFS gaming tables, I've been reluctant to use a consumable when I felt we could get through an encounter without it. 300 gp on a 2nd level potion is quite a bit of cash in the earlier levels.

By the way, also... it has led to an almost compulsory purchase with the first 2 prestige points your character earns: wand of cure light wounds. You just pass it to whoever can cast the spell at the beginning of a scenario and they can heal you with your own charges.

I'm like Kajar in that I generally have no problem sharing resources, but given the nature of PFS it makes sense that a person might want to be more sparing with their consumables when possible; it's something I'll definitely keep in mind for the future.

Also, thanks for the tip on the wand! It's not really an issue for Nella obviously, but I do have another 1st level PFS character (warrior) who will be very happy to make use of that tip once I've played her in a few games!

Male Human (Michigander) GM/1 Tactical - Where on Golarion - CLW Charges: 0

Especially when you get into some higher levels, a wand of CLW is the most standard piece of gear you should have, regardless of class. You don't want to use your spell resources to keep yourself healed, and the level 1 CLW spell is the most efficient way to do it. Since you can get it with a relatively measly 2 PP, you never really have to pay for it.

In my opinion, every character should have a wand of clw after their first adventure (assuming they get both PP). You don't always really need it, but when you do, it can be the difference between surviving the resource drain of the full scenario and not...

I have also noticed that PFS does an incredible job of making consumables much more valuable. I don't know if it was the way I gamed before I hit these threads, or just the way we did our homebrew stuff, but I hated spending money on consumables. it always felt like a waste.

In PFS never once have I felt like consumables were a waste of gold. You get introduced to so many situations, many of which you wouldn't "normally" encounter. Why spend the money on a magical enchantment for your back-up weapon if you rarely use it? 50 gold on an oil of magic weapon is sufficient, so you can focus your spending on your main gear.

Probably not going to need a 'good' aligned weapon very often, but when you do having it could mean life or death. A simple scroll or oil is a minimal investment that can pay big dividends.

Our group has a link to a thread that has a ton of 'survival' advice for PFS. When I can break away again for a moment I will link it in the discussion thread.

You guys are doing great by the way. Hopefully this encounter has the right balance of pucker-factor and fun.

Male Tengu Level 2, #-8

Swarms always have "pucker factor" for level 1 characters! Luckily, my low-level dudes always pack some AoE stuff - except my rogue, who just has vermin repellent! ;-) Thank you, Adventurer's Armory. It may have cost me $7 for the PDF, but spring loaded wrist sheaths and vermin repellent make it a great investment.

To avoid some awkwardness, lets imagine the squeeze more like some japanese pressure points technique then the tradicional 'squeeze' on our female friend, right?
