The cheering of the crowd surges through the air, raising into a deafening crescendo as it becomes apparent that the ultimate match of the qualifying tournament has reached its final conclusion. A small human dressed in resplendent ruby-colored robes approaches, flanked on either side by two large, armored bodyguards. The short man raises a hand towards the audience for silence, which they reluctantly give. He calls your name in a light, high-pitched voice, and hands you a scroll case with an elaborately detailed picture of a ruby-colored phoenix on the outside. Inside the case is a small scroll, its writing in a gold tinted ink. It reads:

Congratulations! Your fighting prowess has been proven. The Emissary, on behalf of the Grand Bank of Abadar, invites you to partake in the thirty-first Ruby Phoenix Tournament. Each member of the victor’s team shall receive their choice of a single item from the Vault of Hao Jin, the famed Ruby Phoenix. So it is judged.

Signed, Sifu Xho Nuo

As you finish reading the scroll, the short eunuch’s eyebrow ticks upwards as he awaits your reply.

At present, each of you are in a separate major arena in different cities. The qualifying matches have been held all at the same time, and you have just finished the last match of the qualifying tournament. You will be united shortly, but for now, feel free to take the opportunity to bask in your victory and address the man that is currently demanding your attention. If you wish to make a small statement as to how you won the final round (ie, "It was an easy victory; the stupid fool never expected me to set him on fire," or "I was about to lose, but had a last minute victory thanks to that my opponent tripping over her own spear") feel free to do so!

Once everyone has posted once, I will move it forward.

Huzzah! So happy I made it in!

Karlia stands proud, her victory having been assured by the jet-black skeleton with raven's wings she had summoned. She wears grey robes over a gleaming chain shirt and deep black leather leggings, and her left eye is obscured by a well-stitched eye patch flaunting the holy symbol of her pirate goddess, Besmara. A rapier wreathed in deep grey flames is held in her right hand, and a heavy steel shield is strapped to her right. Her short blonde hair shows no sign of perspiration, and in fact she shows almost no sign of exertion.

Ignoring all the fanfare around her, Karlia looks toward the short man.

"Now that I've defeated this poor wretch, I will be on my way to the tournament. Thank you for the opportunity to prove my goddess's power."

"Hold on, just a minute." Corlis motions to the man, raising a finger so as to punctuate the gesture.

The gladiator turns to his prone opponent, a large dark-skinned Shoanti warrior, and offers a hand to help him up. "Good match, pal. Had me scared for my neck back there with that axe of yours."

The warrior accepts Corlis's help and, after standing up, shares a firm and respectful handshake. "Next match'll be mine, Tern. Until then, you should go and claim your prize." the warrior nods, shouldering his greataxe and making his way out of the arena.

Having opted to dispute the final duel in theatrical combat rather than a more brutal form of combat, neither of the men is marked any worrisome injuries, though they each suffered some impressively bloody surface cuts.

"C'mon, people!" Corlis calls out to the crowd, holding his hurting shoulder. "Let's hear it for Tremor-Shouter! I wasn't the only one putting up a good fight in this arena!"

As the crowd cheers for the departing Shoanti, Corlis turns his attention back to the delegation, and takes the scroll, reading it quickly.

"The Ruby Phoenix Tournament, huh?" Corlis grins widely, before giving a hearty chuckle. "It was only a matter of time. Sounds good to me!"

The last battle was already described in Jake's profile :)

As the small human approaches, Jake lowers Grim and sheathes it behind him. Afterwards he bows respectfully at him/her as he receives the scroll.

"I sincerely hope that the Ruby Phoenix Tournament has better contenders than this town had. They were good but unlucky that I chose to compete here." says Jake, and stretches his neck a bit. "They should be able to recover though, so you better call in the clerics."

He turns back to the crowd, raising the scroll in a one handed grip. Then, before he departs, he dances a bit (think Fire Bender)and unleashes a Lightning Bolt into the air.

Ah... it feels good to let that out. I can't wait to use it in combat though.

"It was a good match!" Jeevika chirps enthusiastically as she helps her drenched opponent stand.

Aside from being rather wet, the other woman appears relatively unharmed, which is odd having been on the receiving end of the elf's sharp sickle quite a bit. Her wounds are almost nonexistent, and overall, she seems slightly sore at worst. Jeevika gives her fellow combatant a polite bow, which receives a curt nod before the two depart their separate ways.

Upon hearing her name, Jeevika turns to the messenger and cartwheels over to his position.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (5) + 16 = 21

She pulls off the stunt relatively well. It is nothing special, but it is clearly practiced. However, Jeevika does seem a bit tired from the recent combat.

The elf takes her battle mask off her face and reads over the contents of the scroll. After a moment, she lets out a happy squeal of delight.

"Oh, this is excellent. Of course I will be there! I was in the audience at the last two tournaments, you know? Not quite sure what I want from that vault, but if nothing else, I have always wanted to participate in the Ruby Phoenix Tournament for the sport. Thank you for that chance!"

"The victor accepts!" calls the man in a loud voice. He turns towards the winner of the final match, and speaks at a much quieter volume. "Well, time to say goodbye to the crowd. Follow me, please."

The man departs the arena with you in tow and the two of you - along with the bodyguards - arrive at a local temple of Abadar. He leads you to a small circular room, and turns to face you.

"Congratulations! Your fighting prowess has been-" he cuts himself off and frowns. "No, wait, that was on the Emissary's message. Er, well." The man's brow furrows in thought.

"Well, we'll cut the pomp then, shall we? You have won the qualifying tournament, which would mean that you have, well, qualified. Now, normally the tournament doesn't hold qualifiers, and simply hand picks the best and most renowned combatants from around the world to participate.

"But," the small man proclaims, thrusting one finger upwards as he speaks, "This year, that is not the case. The reasons for this are twofold," the man holds up a single finger. "One! To spread knowledge of the tournament. After all, if the qualifiers are held the world over, more people are certain to draw interest, and all the better for Abadar and the legacy of Hao Jin." The man ticks up a second finger. "Two! The tournament will have a slightly different structure this year, as you may have heard.

"The previous tournament had a complication," the eunuch practically spits out the last word. "One of the combatants was found to be cheating. The Emissary believes that the new structure will reduce, and hopefully eliminate, the potential for such behavior. In short, the tournament will be held in teams of four. While those who are hand-picked will be able to choose their teams, I'm afraid the qualifier victors will not have that luxury, I'm afraid. You will be forced to participate with the other victors. It will be interesting, I think, to see how well complete strangers can work as a team."

"You are to meet me back here in precisely one week's time, when the sun is at its peak. You will then be transported to meet the other members of your team." The official gives a curt bow. "Any questions?"

You will have one week to make any final preparations. You may use this time to gather any last minute supplies that you think you may need. Once everyone has had any potential questions answered, and has bought any supplies that they wish to buy, we will fast-forward one week to the next meeting.

"Yes, one question before I take my leave... How much do you know of the contents of Hao Jin's Vault? I hear that there is a fine collection of weapons there... including another blade made of black metal?" says Jake casually,

Whatever the response, Jake will leave and spend the next four days in combat training. The last two days will be spent in vacation at the town's best hot spring inn, well known for having a common area for both men and women. On the seventh day, he goes back to meet the Tournament Representative.

A week is such short time with such a momentous event looking from just ahead.

Still, in the week, Corlis finds the time to train until he is confident that he can give his best at the arena. He has The Talon sharpened and polished to perfection by a renowned blacksmith, and makes sure that he and Zephyr are well supplied for travel.

When the day comes, Corlis is bright and early at the temple of Abadar, finely dressed in elegant travel clothes, his weapons polished to a sheen, and his backpack ready for travel.

Karlia spends her days until time to leave researching the vault, trying to determine what may be inside.

Knowledge(History): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

She'll be looking for any evidence of relics of neutral gods or goddesses, or something that may further enhance her channeling abilities.

"I have a couple. First, what does your tournament have in the way of dancing? In case you didn't know, that's kind of my thing. Second, cheating? That's terrible! What happened?"

Jeevika's mood changes noticeably between the two questions. The first one is asked quite happily. The second one comes off as shocked and concerned. The elf figures that she better read up on the rules. After all, with her odd set of powers, she can never be too sure.

Jeevika spends the week making some last minute preparations. First and foremost, she gets her participation in the Ruby Phoenix Tournament cleared up with her traveling company. The qualifier matches had sort of been done on her own time, completely on whim. Truth be told, the Waves Oracle had not thought her odds of qualifying to be that good.

Luckily, everything works out; aside from the fact that she would still be doing her job as a cultural diplomat, being only the second Kyonin elf to have the honor to participate in the last one hundred years (to her knowledge) certainly helps. What better way to promote her country than as a victor of a major tournament?

The elf then gets her gear in order and makes a few purchases. While traveling several of her friends, she does not typically have to carry a lot of equipment. The Company usually has a few other casters along to cover any potential problems that her own magic does not. If possible, she also tries to read up on the tournament's rules.

Finally, the dancer spends most of her free time swimming and practicing her profession. Nothing fancy. It's just to be expected of Jeevika Kailani.

Jeevika shows up at the temple of Abadar thirty minutes early. She keeps an eye open for the messenger, though the Waves Oracle does occasionally sneak in a chance to practice a new original dance that she has been working on.

Jake:

The eunuch eyes your blade, and nods in understanding. "I personally have never been inside the vault. That is restricted only to the Emissary and tournament victors," The man furrows his brow in deep thought for a moment before answering. "That said, Hao Jin accepted many challenges over the years, and often set wagers as a requirement for prospective challengers. To thin the number of challengers, see. The most common wager were weapons; the loser would forfeit his or her weapon to the winner."

Pausing for only a moment, the ruby-robed man abruptly sings a segment from the middle of a popular song, The Ruby Phoenix Reborn:
"Quick and nimble was Jiang Kun
Many a widow he made to mourn
But so too fell his blackened blade
Claimed by the Ruby Phoenix Reborn"

With no preamble, the eunuch switches instantly back to speaking rather than singing. "Jiang Kun, the legendary bandit, of course. Said to have once robbed a caravan transporting a blade of great power, and to have claimed it for himself." The man offers Jake a small shrug. "Then again, legends start with stories, which stem from rumors. There may be a kernel of truth in the song, but," he pauses for emphasis, "there may not be."

Karlia Riftsbane:

Karlia's search reveals several relics that might be found in the vault:
-Balanced Scales: a pair of scales that perpetually hang in balance no matter how much weight is placed on either side. It is said that channeling energy into the scales allows the wielder to direct a burst of negative energy towards a single target with great force, while simultaneously healing the wielder.
-Crown of the Simurgh: a minor artifact that was granted to Hao Jin by a simurgh; although normally the crown only functions for a single creature for whom it was crafted, the simurgh that created this crown is said to have been bound by Hao Jin to serve whoever could win the crown from her, or from her tournament after death. The crown itself offers protection from evil, and the ability to receive advice (in in times of dire need, protection) from the simurgh.
-Cloak of Wind and Waves: a cloak holy to the god Gozreh. The cloak is said to grant its wearer the ability to traverse on air and through water with the ease that most terrestrial creatures walk on earth. Unfortunately, its innate raw magics tend to cause weather mishaps of varying degrees of import wherever the wearer travels while wearing the cloak.

Jeevika:

The eunuch nods gravely to Jeevika. "Ah, Wu Dizhen, the earth sorceress. She brought shame to the tournament entire. She, and her sister." The human's eyes darken at the mention of Wu's name, and his hands ball into small fists as he continues, "Wu Dizhen's numerous infractions were only discovered after the fact, save one: she and her sister, Wu Jufeng, were trading places. Often mid-battle. When one sister was injured, she would simply obscure the arena in mist, cast a spell of invisibility, or one of many such tricks to hide herself. Then, the other sister would switch places with her. The new sister, of course, would be fully invigorated, while the opponent still suffered wounds from the previous sister. We suspected something was amiss, but were unable to prove it until the final match of the tournament."

The eunuch's scowl slowly melts into a bright grin, as his eyes focus back to Jeevika. "She was disqualified and forever banned from the tournament, of course. And to answer your first question, dancing is certainly promoted, especially those who weave it into their fighting styles. The tournament is an audience affair as well as a continuation of the legacy of Hao Jin and dedication to Abadar. The flashier the fight, the better!"

Onward!

Having arrived at the temple at the designated time - or earlier - the small man greets the qualifiers. He fishes in the sleeve of his robe and produces a scroll with several magic runes etched upon its surface. The eunuch extends his hand towards each qualifier, palm up.

"We are going to teleport to the target location, now," he sighs. "You may experience some slight traveling sickness. I was once told to think of my favorite food to counteract it, but that advice is exceedingly terrible. I couldn't eat candies for a week; I associated them with the teleportation. Think of a food you hate. Worst thing that'll happen is you hate it more."

As he makes contact with the prospective tournament goer, he utters a command, and the world vanishes. When it reappears, all four of the victors of the qualifying tournament stand in a room almost identical to the one in which they previously were standing, complete with a man identical to the wizards that teleported them to this location.

"Welcome!" chirps the robed man merrily. "I am Shu Huang Zhe, one of the tournament officials and your personal escort to the ferry that will take you to Xielan Island. I trust my simulacra explained everything and prepared you suitably for the journey?"

"I was prepared well enough. When do we begin the tournament? I am eager to defeat some worthy opponents."

Male Human Fighter 4

Corlis gives a hearty laugh, doing what he can to push away the nauseating memories of his aunt's cream of spinach.

"Hah! I like this one!" he says, amicably (and quite powerfully) clapping a hand against Karlia's shoulder. "She's got spunk! I'm as eager as you are to start, but you heard the man, we've got a ferry to take first."

Then, he turns to Shu Huang Zhe and offers to shake the man's hand. "It's very nice to meet you, sir, and it's an honor to be invited to such an illustrious tournament."

Shu grasps Corlis' outstretched hand and pumps it up and down vigorously. As he releases his hand from Corlis' powerful grip, he inclines his head towards Karlia, indicating that he has indeed heard her question. "Glad to hear it!" he says, and leans forward conspiratorially. "And the audience will be eager to see it. Unfortunately, the tournament doesn't begin until tomorrow. Today, you will simply be taking a ferry ride to the island, and have some time to get settled. Meals will be provided on the island for all participants, and you should arrive in time for dinner.

A fried rice dish of some sort, I believe," Shu adds, eyes darting upwards as if checking a mental menu. "If all of your team is prepared, we can depart for the ferry immediately."

Karlia winces only the tiniest bit at the strong slap to her back, but puts on her best smile for her new teammate. "Nice to meet you as well, my friend. May Besmara smile on us all in this contest." To Shu, she says "I apologize for seeming forward... Shu, was it?, I'm just eager to move ahead. A ferry ride sounds fine. Will you be joining us on the ferry, by any chance?"

"Down here!" Jeevika calls out to Karlia's question as she stands up, evidently having fallen down somehow. The elf quickly explains, "Sorry. We teleported while I was in mid-step, and shifting scenery so quickly made me trip. So we need to catch a ferry? Sounds good to me. Oh, where are my manners? My name is Jeevika Kailani. It's an honor to meet everyone. Aside from Shu Huang Zhe, I don't believe I caught any of your names, though."

Somehow, the Ocean Oracle manages to say everything in one breath.

"I am Karlia. May the grace of Besmara be with you, and none of her wrath." Karlia bows to Jeevika, already seeing a kindred soul in her thanks to the smell of salt water on her skin. "I can see the touch of the sea on you, so I think we will be fast friends. Have you ever been on a ship? I hope to eventually captain my own ship one day..." Karlia goes a bit wistful for a moment, a rare honest smile crossing her lips. Then she remembers where she is, and her face once more becomes a stoic mask.

Jeevika grins at the positive response she has received thus far. Truth be told, she had been a little worried about working with a team of complete strangers, but her first impression of this Besmaran devotee is quite positive. She hopes the others are as friendly.

"Thank you for the blessing, Karlia. Again, it is a pleasure to meet you too. I think you're right about us becoming fast friends." The elf returns Karlia's bow with one of her own. "As for your question, my travels often take me across the seas, so I have been on many ships before. Or swimming next to them. Nice guess about my affinity with the sea by the way! It's actually for all bodies of water, but then again, the oceans are the biggest ones, aren't they?"

Jeevika rolls her arms a bit as she thinks over something to ask in turn. She likes to learn about other people, and Karlia is one of the more interesting individuals that she has met in a long time.

"So what brings a Besmaran follower to the Ruby Phoenix Tournament? Me? I am in it mostly for the sport. There is probably something in that vault that I would love, but nothing specific comes to mind right now. Wait. Scratch that thought. Maybe there's something I can find to send old Treerazer packing. Gods know he's been a thorn in my people's side forever."

"I am here to show the power that Besmara can provide to her chosen, and to espouse the heresy that is the allowing of outsiders... demons, devils, angels, and archons alike... to mar this plane with their gospels of 'good' and 'evil'. Our plane is one of balance, and I seek to keep that balance, in the name of Besmara." She pauses, and says, a bit more quietly, "I will admit, I also am very interested in gaining access to the vault of Hao Jin, as there are supposedly relics there that would trump any I've seen in my travels."

Male Human Fighter 4

"Ah! Prize-seekers, huh? 's fair a motivation as any."

Corlis bows to the assembled.

"Corlis Tern, at your service, though you may have heard the title "Whirling Falcon of Varisia" before."

Corlis's title is of relatively high renown in all of Varisia, and in much of the Cheliaxian empire.

"I am here for the competition more than for the prize, though I do intend to find myself some interesting curio in the vault once all is said and done."

Shu has largely remained quiet since Jeevika's mention of Treerazer, and has been stroking his long black beard in deep thought. Abruptly, he speaks, "Hao Jin did battle a number of oni in her time. I suppose it would not be unlikely for her to have possessed several objects that assisted in fighting or banishing outsiders. Evil outsiders in particular."

Turning to Karlia, he answers a question she asked a few minutes ago, prior to an interruption from the sudden appearance of a white-haired elf. "I will be taking a separate ferry over later this evening. The ferry that you shall be boarding is reserved for participants and spectators lucky enough to secure a ticket for the tournament. I will, however, accompany you to the dock."

Shu looks around the room, as if suddenly aware that there is something missing. "Hm. We appear a bit short-handed," he says, closing his eyes and placing two fingers on his forehead. "Ah, simulacra number three is still trying to figure out the scroll. For a copy of me, he's exceptionally simple-minded. No fear, though, I am certain your fourth team member will arrive in one piece."

"Probably, anyway," Shu says with a concerned look. "Take a piece of advice from me: Never skimp on material components, especially when crafting intelligence.

Moments later, Jake materializes right next to the puddle. Clearly embarrassed, he whispers and with a quick gesture the vomit collects itself and flies out the window.

Sort of. You're in a room in a temple of Abadar located in Goka. Goka is on the western coast of Tian Xia.

"Well! I see the warnings weren't for nothing," Corlis chuckles.

"Think you'll be okay there, friend?"

"Yes, thank you. The sickness passes quite quickly. I might not want to learn the Teleport spell yet though..." Jake says to the tough looking human. He pauses for a moment as if in deep thought.

"Are you alright, Grim?" he says mentally.

"That should have been a conclusive statement, Jake. I am a being without a stomach after all." a mental voice responds as if it came from just behind Jake's head.

Jake's face cringes, but with a shake of his head, he collects himself and addresses the others with a slight bow, "You are to be my companions for this tournament then? You may call me Jake, arena champion from the southern reaches of the Tian Xia." And with a quick glance at the others, "And would be our pleasure to work with a couple of fine ladies such as yourselves."

"That's an admirable goal," Jeevika says sincerely after thinking about some of the problems the elf knows outsiders have caused.

The Oracle of Waves is about to say something else when Corlis introduces himself. A small, rational part of her mind files the thought away for later. She would very much love to discuss the topic further. However, the rest of Jeevika's mind comes to an abrupt halt.

"Corlis Tern? The Corlis Tern? Oh, wow! What an honor! You looked familiar, but I didn't want to assume. Anyway, I've seen a few of your duels. They were amazing. Very inspirational. Certainly taught this old elf some new tricks. I'm so looking forward to fighting alongside you."

Jeevika intently listens to Shu's words and nods at each one. She is about to ask what would happen if the fourth member of their team doesn't show up, but that proves to be moot as Jake makes his appearance seconds later. It takes her a moment to realize that the new arrival is invisible and has not been disintegrated or anything, but she is soon relieved to see that the man is just fine.

She blushes lightly at Jake's compliment.

"Nice to meet you, Jake. I'm Jeevika Kailani, Kyonin's unofficial representative. And don't worry about the sickness. I've been teleporting for decades, and I'm hardly used to it."

"Well, if this isn't a fine assembly, let me be struck by thunder. I think we're just about ready to be on our way. Shu the way! Er, I mean, Show the way, Shu!" Corlis declares, perhaps a little too enthusiastically for his own good.

Please forgive the double post, something just came to mind and I should address it before it becomes even weirder that I haven't addressed it yet.

A metallic rattle sounds from a cloth-covered shape next to Corlis' backpack on the floor, alerting the gladiator.

"Oh! Right! Between the teleportation and the new arrivals, I almost forgot about him!"

Corlis picks up the object and takes the cloth off of it, revealing an irritated-looking falcon.

"Sorry about that." Corlis says, holding the bird cage up for all to see. He rummages through his pockets and produces a small piece of jerky, holding it through the bars of the cage for the bird to snatch.

"The team is assembled!" cheers Shu. "Well, then, onward and upward! Or onward, at least. Technically the temple is elevated above sea level, so we'll be going downward."

Shu leads the team outside the temple. The view outside is picturesque; the city itself is a mass of bright reds, blues, and yellows. Several large pagodas can be seen towering above lesser constructions. Shu points out several small landmarks as he walks down to the dock, where the indistinguishable tang of the ocean fills the nostrils. The dull roar of small waves assaulting the shore creates a tranquil ambiance to clash with the busy clamor of the city.

"And here we are," Shu announces, pointing to a ship. The "ferry" indicated is nothing more than a fishing ship, although one of reasonable size. Shu runs ahead of the party to speak with a member of the crew before waving them over. "What luck! The ferry is about to depart."

The ship itself has a small crowd of people already on board, in addition to the crew. Several of them look toward the new arrivals with mixes of amusement, indifference, and impatience.

"Thank you for everything," Jeevika says to Shu as she gives the wizard a respectful bow. She then turns to her teammates, waves a slender hand to beckon them forward, and begins leading the way to the ferry. "Let's not keep everyone waiting!"

"All right, all right. I just hope they didn't overload the boat yet..." Jake waves back. Before he steps onto the boat however, he asks Shu, "How far away are we supposed to travel on boat?"

Corlis follows the others onto the ship. "Ah, it's been a while since I sailed anywhere."

Once on board, he puts on his falconry gauntlet and lets Zephyr fly free, figuring the falcon would enjoy a chance to stretch its wings.

"The ride should last under an hour. Now go, or you'll need wait for the next one!" Shu chides.

The ship departs shortly after the team boards. Despite its homely appearance, the ship sails the water with ease, and the usual up-and-down motion that accompanies boat travel is minimal. The other passengers largely keep to themselves.

Not long after the ship has departed, a young woman wearing the sky-blue garb of a Gokan fisherwoman and carrying a large pack approaches Corlis.

"Corlis Tern? she exclaims, her voice a mixture of shock and admiration. "Here for the tournament?" The woman tips back her conical hat, revealing a lightly scarred face bearing the typical angular features of the Chelish. Without waiting for an answer, she thrusts out her hand in greeting. "Risha. That's my name, I mean. Is this your team? Have you fought together before? How do you all fight? Are you, I dunno, all trained in some super secret ancient fighting style that's going to blow away the spectators like BOOM with some kind of magic or earthbreakers or crazy grappling style handed down by your master or uncle or something?"

Risha's eyes flit excitedly over the party, as if assessing them, as the words continue to babble out of her in a stream of consciousness.

Jake chuckles behind Corlis and whispers to him, "Better not disappoint this one buddy. If you're looking for magic, we got you covered."

"I see I'm not your only fan," Jeevika muses lightly with a chuckle. She waits for Corlis to reply first. Her many years of diplomatic work have taught the elf that it is usually best to let the first addressed member of a group answer questions before the rest start talking.

Corlis leans against the shipside railing nonchalantly.

"It's very nice to meet you, Risha. As a matter of fact, my teammates and I have only just met. It seems like they're having the winners of the qualifiers operating as a team for the tournament. I'd give you an idea of what it'll be like in the arena except... I don't really know, myself. All the more to find out!"

As he speaks, Corlis extends his gauntlet clad arm, and Zephyr comes to perch upon it, eyeing the crowd with curiosity, tilting its head to one side.

"So..." Risha turns towards the rest of the group. "What can we expect to see in the tournament?"

"Blood, blades, and magic of course! :)" Jake says with a smile. "We do not know what kind of challenges our host has ready for us yet, but we'll keep it entertaining. In the meantime, we could use some entertainment ourselves before we rest for the night. Any suggestions?"

"Jake and Corlis more or less said everything I was thinking," Jeevika adds as she absentmindedly moves her arms through a dance routine. The elf suddenly realizes what she's doing and quickly stops and blushes. "It's too early to say what exactly what I'll do. Each foe or challenge will be different, so I'll use a different strategy."

"Come see the matches and you'll find out." Corlis chuckles.

"Yeah... it's best we keep our stuff for combat secret for as long as possible." adds Jake with a shrug.

I wonder where Risha got her scars...?

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4

Risha listens attentively, but her face is unreadable. After everyone has said their piece, Risha shrugs, and responds to Jake's question. "Supposedly there will be some sort of dinner provided for participants. That is about all I have heard. Perhaps we..." Risha's voice trails off as she begins patting her pockets anxiously.

"Ah!" she exclaims, "I seem to have misplaced my map of the tournament grounds! Apologies, but I must be going." Without saying another word, Risha shoulders her way through the crowd of people aboard the ship, and disappears into it.

In the distance, a large mass of land grows ever larger as the ferry draws near. The island itself has an odd shape; it is akin to a crab's claw, reaching out to grasp the ferry. The ship passes through into the "claw," entering a strait that spans a thousand feet on either side. Large cliffs obscure the view further inland, although as the ship continues on its course, a settlement becomes apparent off the bow of the ship. About half a mile ahead lies a large dock. As the ship approaches, the dock reveals a mass of people who appear to be awaiting the ship's arrival.

Jeevika watches Risha depart, not quite sure of what to make of the abrupt end of the conversation. However, the Chelish woman's final words do get some thoughts running through her mind. The elven dancer absentmindedly bounces on the balls of her bare feet a few times before turning to her teammates.

"She does raise a good point. What exactly should we do when we arrive? My memory might be failing me in my old age, but I don't remember Shu saying anything specific."

Jeevika turns her to Karlia, who she realizes has been silent for most of the boat ride.

"Everything okay, Karlia? You've been awfully quiet."

"I'm fine, child. I prefer to take in my surroundings. That Risha seemed... troubled by some of the conversation, but I cannot for the life of me determine what. As far as what we should do when we arrive, I hope that the tournament will begin post-haste. Ferry rides are relaxing, but I'm in no mood for relaxation at the moment."

"Just wondering," Jeevika replies with a smirk. She looks over at the ocean and contemplates swimming the rest of the way, but Oracle of Waves ultimately decides against it. Such an action would probably cause a scene. "When we can find a moment, maybe we should review everyone's skills and make strategies. Risha accidentally raised a good point; I really don't know what you all can do, and that might be a problem in the future."

As the ship begins pulling into port, Corlis brings two fingers to his mouth and gives a shrill whistle. "Here boy! Time to get off the ship!" A moment later, Zephyr comes fluttering, the carcass of a rat in its beak, and hops back into his cage, quickly turning his attention to his meal as Corlis rejoins the group.

"Some strategizing sounds like a good idea. I've participated in a few team fights in my career, and going in with no idea of what you're planning to do is a pretty bad idea."

"Much of the focus of my training has been to hone my skills at channeling Besmara's fury or her approval into bursts of energy that can either harm or heal. I can even channel both aspects of my goddess at once, and can exclude creatures from one or both. I am also adept at battling outsiders and sending them back to the hell or heaven they were summoned from, where they belong."

Karlia is a channeling-focused cleric. She channels 6d6 of either positive or negative energy, or 5d6 of both at once. She can exclude up to 6 targets from each. She can shape the channeled energy into any of the following:
-30 ft. burst centered on her
-60 ft. line
-30 ft. cone
-10 ft. burst anywhere within 30 ft.
She can also use her channeling against either good- or evil-aligned outsiders to harm or heal them.
She also will summon neutrally-aligned creatures to fight for her often (which is kind of hypocritical, since she often talks about how outsiders should be purged from this world, but of course she means the outsiders that SHE deems "good" or "evil", and would never consider this to be hypocritical).
