That morning

Theshen soaks in Nenet's words about the Jewelled Sages and the city of Eto. And a question bubbles up.

"Would it be obvious to the Master if the other jewels were destroyed? Are they linked in such a manner?"

**********

At the water

Theshen was thoroughly enjoying the camaraderie, the hot food, Radiya's song, and the excitement of a journey begun. Those watching his obsidian-seeming eyes might see them reflect little or no firelight.

And then the shrieks hit his ears and he heard little else.

"Listen! We must find them and help!"

Theshen urgently looks around, turning from side to side, desperate to see or hear where the distressed one is, while he draws out his sling.

EDIT – In answer to Theshen's question regarding the Sages
Nenet brings her hand to her chest, her mouth slightly open in surprise. ”Such a possibility had never occurred to me, prince of sun and dusk. I will ask the Sage about it, but I believe the answer will be no. Being under persecution and hiding from the authorities of the time, it could have been better to avoid any sort of connection between the stones. If one of them were captured, there would be ways of using that connection to find the other sages.”

**********

Rawiya, Theshen and Asmani are the first to respond, their heads immediately turning towards the river bank to the west, no doubt the source of the screams.

Whilst the bard and the healer draw out their weapons, Asmani moves quickly and silently to the west. Though darkness has already set in, she has no trouble finding a young Osirian woman fallen on the river’s margins. She is struggling to get back on her feet, as it seems her legs are entangled in the papyrus reeds that just a few hours ago the group gazed upon with pleasure. The woman has not yet seen Asmani and keeps screaming for help, constantly looking behind her shoulder as if she expected something to come from the water. ”Somebody! Quick! It’s coming!” Her rough, low-caste accent is refreshing to the rogue after so long hearing the overly sweetened version of Osiriani her travel companions speak.

With Amenopheus and Theshen:
As he takes in what the Sage has to say about naft, Badhru nods along. "Well, it ain’t much to go on, but if Nenet’s at least got a lead on where we might get another sample, I suppose that’s something." He turns and looks at Theshen. "Whaddya think, we got this, right,", he asks with a nod and a slight smile. "So your girl Nenet knows about this, obviously, and from what you’re saying, Torch knowin’ would be a terrible idea. The others, I suppose we can keep it close to the vest, unless not tellin’ becomes more of a pain in the neck than it’s worth?" Taking Woodrose’s journal and putting it back into his shoulder bag, he says to Amenopheus, "I think one more item we might want for the trip would probably be a bunch of securely-stoppered flasks, say ten or twelve, and a chest in which we can keep 'em. Never know, we might strike the mother lode of this stuff," he says with a wink.

In the now, at the riverside...

Asmani wrote:
"Careful, something's off with that cry. It's not what it seems. Give me a moment. I'll take a look."

Hearing the edge in the woman's voice, Badhru decides to accompany her. Short sword in hand, he comes along. "Unless you're more'n ya look, I probably got better night vision than you. 'Sides, two're better'n one when there's trouble."

I'm trying to avoid needlessly rolling Perception checks, as it makes "Perception is the most-rolled skill in the game" a self-fulfilling prophesy, as everyone pre-emptively rolls a check even when there's nothing to be accomplished by it. GM, going forward, if you need a Perception check for which I haven't provided a roll, I'm okay with you using the mod in my header to roll for me.

Immediately after retiring from the Sage’s studio Waylund, citing a prior engagement for the evening, politely excused himself from the others. He leaves in the waiting palanquin that brought him to the villa.

An hour later one of the footmen delivers an assortment of equipment to Amenopheus’ estate with instructions to stow it on Waylund’s camel.

The wizard arrives at the Sothis’s Triangle Gate dressed significantly differently than the evening before, but still carrying noble on his gauntlet clad left hand. He now wears an old but clean poncho over a simple peasant’s garb. However, the silk long glove on his right hand and the well-used and cared for soldier’s boots stand out among the rest of his traveling garb.

He stows a newly carved quarterstave on his camel, upon which anyone who cares to look a will noticed about fifty carved names and a bass relief of a tall ship.

At the camp

At the raised alarm, Waylund steps out of the tent holding aloft a candle in time to see Unas-Ankh, Rawiya Shu-Kri and dashing toward the west and assumes Badhru and Asmani are already ahead of them.

He looks to noble perched on the roof of his tent “Scout ahead, stay high and quiet and then cover our eastern flanks. The commotion might draw other predators."
With a quick gesture and muttered incantation waylund focuses his will until a small vessel of force springs into being. He quickly places the candle in it, grabs his quarterstaff and heads at brisk but calm walk to catch up to the group - the floating candle lighting his path.

Waylund:

Waylund remembers a book he read on the Prophet’s Ascension which described at length the fauna that inhabited the Sphinx, amongst which crocodiles were the most common and thus the most likely to cause problems to unsuspecting travellers. They are fierce adversaries, though somewhat sluggish when on land. One particular grisly detail that comes to the wizard's mind is the crocodile's capacity to latch on to their prey after a bite, severely hampering the victims mobility whilst it continues to chomp until the prey either escapes or dies.

Seeing Waylund leaving camp, Nenet catches up and says, avoiding his gaze: ”I will stay behind and watch over our camels, Lord Wyllt. If it is indeed a crocodile, shout – they are fearsome beasts that can easily kill a man with one bite.”

Meanwhile, Theshen, Rawiya and Shu-kri reach the river bank. They see the half-orc and the silent Osiriani carefully hidden in the shadows, all but invisible to unsuspecting observers, as well as the source of the noise: the screaming Osiriani woman with her feet tangled in reeds. By now she seems to be almost free of them as she begins to crawl out of the water. Her cries take renewed strength once the three newcomers arrive: ”Have mercy, whoever you are! I am stuck, the crocodile is almost here! Quick, please!” She extends her hand in a plea for help. Though Asmani cannot completely shake off her suspicions, it is hard to ignore the fact that, even if the woman were pretending, all that movement and noise would be sure to eventually attract one or two of the beasts.

Waylund is the last to arrive, the floating candle preceding him by no more than a second or two. The light allows everyone to clearly see the woman now. Her clothes match her accent: a rough light-brown tunic, a necklace of coloured wood beads, all of which clearly mark her as belonging to the lower castes of Osirian society. Her face is a mess of sand, dirt and tears and it is hard to be certain, but she seems to be in hear late twenties. Around the whole scene there are palm trees, bushes and humid grass.

Behind her, to the west, is the river running calmly, easier to see with the faint glow of the candle. Though Rawiya yells at a menacing shape right next to the woman, Waylund believes it to be a nothing more than driftwood. Noble, flying above the scene, agrees with his master, but also spots something else moving underwater, around 60 feet away.

Forgot to reply to a couple of actions. Theshen, Waylund, I will wait until everyone has posted before resolving your actions.

Rawiya:

Rawiya does not hear the songs magic sings for her between the camp and the river bank. She is about to give up when a faint trill stirs her ears, seconds before Waylund appears. After the wizard comes with his summoned candle holder, she hears a trio: one barely a whistle, the other two barely more than a whisper each.

Badhru:

The sage chuckles for a second before replying: "Woodrose could never have made justice to your colourful language, Master Badhru. I leave it to your discretion whether or not to tell your travel companions; they gain little from knowing anything about it, but if you believe it will help your investigation, it shouldn't be a problem. Do try to keep any unnecessary details to a minimum, of course. As for the secure flasks, I would be more than impressed if you can collect even one sample of the substance as naft…tends to avoid being caught. You will understand if you come across it. In any case, you have my permission. Speak to Nenet before leaving and she will arrange something."

Esteemed guests, I believe we must draw this conversation to and end, as this old man needs to eat and then to return to his studies.”

The Osirian woman grabs Theshen’s hand and pulls herself up, almost dragging the healer down to the floor, and then jumps at his neck, hugging the breath out of him. She yells very loudly, ”Oh, thank you, thank you, kind sir! What is your name, sir? I will name my first born after you! Oh, how lucky I am! Thank the merciful gods!” At Waylund’s suggestion they move back to camp, she shakes her head and bows ”Oh, do not worry, kind mister foreigner, I believe your mighty presence has scared away the thing! Yes, surely it has run away now. You see, I was travelling with my husband got lost, the silly woman I am! Oh, and you brought so many friends with yourself, all for a simple peasant, I feel honoured,” she says, seeing Shu-kri coming forward with her spear in hand.

As the woman continues to invent new ways of thanking her rescuers, Waylund’s attention is abruptly taken off the torrent of grateful words coming out of the distressed woman. Noble’s feelings hit him like a wall of bricks and the wizard gasps for air: something happened at the campsite and Nenet is in danger.

"Chert voz'mi," Badhru mutters to himself as he bolts back for camp.

Slightly uncharacteristic of him to do that while "working", but I needed to justify that less-than-great Stealth roll.

The woman scoffs and replies to Waylund’s attempt at diplomacy: ”Says a lot about you that you think we ‘resort to trickery’ because we can’t take you on, rich boy. Ever occurred to you we just prefer not killing and hurting people? Nobles! All the same in both sides of the Inner Sea! Anyhow, this is how it’s going to go: you’ll stay here with me, my pals will get the food and money you have at your camp, you’ll have nice walk to Sothis and no one’ll get hurt.” In her tirade, she seems to not hear Badhru cursing when he walks away.

Whilst she speaks, the wizard manages to get a better look at her gestures and the types of energy she is manipulating. It seems that she is preparing to cast colour spray. Her technique – or lack thereof – indicates she is either an apprentice or, more likely, that magic runs in her blood.

assuming Shu-kri skips her turn so as not to start hostilities, Asmani keeps moving towards the camp.

The moment Theshen tries to move away, the woman yells: ”I told you to stay where you are!” From her hands erupts multicoloured lights that take the shape of small horned humanoids that throw themselves against the faces of Shu-kri and Theshen. Both Osirian and Bekyar are momentarily disoriented by the dancing lights that seem to erase the existence of everything else around them, but the magic at work is too weak to stand against their willpower. The sorceress mumbles a curse at her failed attempt in subduing part of the group. ”This is just a warning shot! I do not want to hurt you, but I will!”

Badhru, to speed things up I’m posting the action from #4 before yours.

So focussed is the woman on the people she had tried to trick that she completely misses a dark shape closing in from the river. Her haughty voice becomes a shriek once more when a large shadow erupts from behind her and powerful jaws snap at her torso. She is helpless against the maw that rend her belly, raise and shake her body whilst she screeches inhuman sounds of pain. Her scream is cut short and the scaled beast throws the unconscious woman against the river mud, now eyeing Shu-kri.

Asmani and Badhru, though almost back at the camp now, cannot help but feel a shiver down their spines when the terrible sounds reach them.

Woman is down, crocodile has arrived and completely destroyed her, you guys have to deal with it now. Asmani and Badhru will reach camp on next turn.

Shu-kri and Rawiya quickly move out of the crocodile’s way and are followed by Waylund. As far as they can tell from quick glances behind their shoulders, the beast decided not to give chase. They quickly catch up with Theshen, Asmani and Badhru who have just reached the camp and stay just outside the reach of the campfire light.

The groups sees Nenet lying on the ground, showing no signs of consciousness and a gaunt man, roughly the same age as the woman they met by the river, hurriedly exiting one of the tents whilst carrying some of the group’s belongings. He darts nervous looks around himself and it is then he sees the menacing silhouette of Badhru trying to approach the area without being seen.

He almost comically drops everything to the ground, staring at the half-orc and at the camels. His scared expression turns to panic once he sees the shadows of Theshen, Shu-kri, Waylund and Rawiya just outside the camp and he bolts to the closest camel, completely unaware of how close Asmani is.

ON Waylund's Turn. Sorry Badhru. I didn't want to post until you had your go but it's getting late

Waylund reached into his spell pouch intending to grab rose petals for a sleep spell. Then a thought occurred to him. During his first week at the Scar the Master of the Horse had overseen indoctrination, which included some extremely basic small unit tactics for the supply and arcane officers.

The old owlbear had said “If you forget everything else I tell you, and you will – remember the following. Plan for a Fix and Flank. No plan survives contact with the enemy. Anything that can go wrong, will.

Since the rest of the that advice was proving to be a prophetic foretelling for the evening the Wizard considered the final warning. Anything that can go wrong, will. The last thing they needed was for the thief and his stolen camel to overcome the spell through sheer force of will while the other camels did not.

So instead of rose petals, he grasped a small pad of butter wrapped in waxed paper and strode forward, his will focused on the saddle under the Camel thief. He squeezed the butter onto his gloved hand and then made a motion as if spreading the butter and said “de wer jedark di sia ricin vur arcaniss vehafor shafaer nomeno togofor vi goawy svaklar thric urac usv cha'sid geou jilg ”

Draconic:

Waylund Cast grease on the camel jacker’s saddle

Maps | NPCs | Circus rules

As far as I understand, RAW grease cast on an object would force the wielder/user of an object to roll a reflex save and, in case he's successful on the first save, grease is completely negated. I'm ruling the grease will stay on for the duration of the spell.

Waylund’s spell reaches the saddle right after the man sits in the camel’s saddle; the thief looses his balance and is about to fall to the ground when he puts his weight on the stirrups and seems to achieve some stability. His riding skills are again put challenged one he hears Asmani’s threats, for a moment completely unaware of who was uttering them. When he sees Asmani approaching with her knives in hand, he again almost falls from the saddle and once more avoids it at the last minute.

”You…you monsters! What have you done to my beautiful wife?” He asks, his voice faltering and his arms trembling.”[/b]

I will delay Badhru’s action until everyone else has posted. If he’s still silent by then, I will just skip it. Shu-kri and Rawiya, you're up.

The man seems confused with Shu-kri’s words ”Is she dead or alive? Why do you toy with me?” And then, with a faint glimmer of hope colouring his face: ”Where is she? How can we save her? Tame me to her, I beg you!”

Theshen rushes to Nenet’s side. To his relief, she is breathing and bears no signs of external wounds besides a small dart sticking out of her neck, a sickly sweet smell of aniseed reaching his nose immediately afterwards. He had once treated a woman whose jealous lover believed she was seeing other men and poisoned her so she wouldn’t leave her house; the smell that accompanied her was exactly the same, and so is Nenet’s state. He was sure this was Blue Whinnis poisoning, meaning his friend should wake up in the next hour or two.

Rawiya keeps her distance, observing the scene unfold without interfering yet, her arrow nocked and ready to fly.
