GM NotEspi |
The dark rooms of the tower interior are mostly filled with stone debris, although the occasional fragment of wooden furniture adds a nice touch.
Continuing into the western room, you locate a door. Interestingly enough, it seems in semi-decent condition. At least at first glance.
The natural light illuminating the northern room reveals a thicket of silken webbing.
Looking at the webs near the ceiling, you notice an eight-legged creature dangling from the silken strands in this room. In the dark, you see at least six eyes looking in your general direction, and every time you touch the cobwebs, the creature twitches a bit. As if looking for something.
For people who passed the above perception check, a bonus round:
This arachnid known as a scaleback spider. It is known for throwing webs at its pray to immobilise the target before closing in to apply poison.
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun has no objections to the proposed path and approaches Zahira at her beckoning. "Perhaps we should determine who will lead the way through and the positions for the others?"
Perception DC 21: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
When they enter the room he looks about, noticing the silken threads. "Apprears to have been the home of a spider once. Strange, misunderstood creatures they are."
Lady Mae |
"Spider webs! Nothing worse than walking face first into a bunch of spider webs. I'm going to stay towards the back of the group, if a fight breaks out, don't get too far away from me or I can't heal you." With that Mae awkwardly draws out a dagger and looks around.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Celegon |
There is a brief knock on the back door before it is cracked open and a well-dressed, but disheveled, elf steps in holding his hands up in a defensive posture.
"So sorry! I'm Celegon. A Captain...", he pulls a piece of paper out of his pocket and glances at it, "Wilridge sent me this way. I apologize as I got a bit too caught up in reading about some the areas around Absalom... and seem to have lost track of time." He glances around sheepishly and first begins to take in the site of the room around them. "Oh my."
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun nods to Mae. "I will stay close to you to keep any enemies away. My skills are not geared towards fighting face-to-face anyway."
With that he turns suddenly as the newcomer appears. "Hello, Celegon, well met. Nice to have another member join this expedition."
Lady Mae |
Mae smiles at Durun "Thank you kindly Durun." Mae then looks up with a start as Celegon comes into view through the doorway, she eyes him curiously sense motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 "Its umm, nice to meet you, I'm Mae."
Kiddir |
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
"I do not see anything worthy of attention. Hm. I'll go first."
And he begins to sneak along the wall, gradually walking into the room.
Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Celegon |
Celegon carefully folds the paper and slips it back into his journal and quietly brings out his longbow. He nods towards Kiddir and begins following at the back of the group.
GM NotEspi |
Zahira moves forth into the westernmost room. Alongside old broken pieces of furniture, dust, and debris - this one also contains a partially smashed reinforced wooden door. Something from the inside seems to have dented the metal bars on the bottom side of the door with a heavy impact, and splintered some of the wooden planks.
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun shrugs and follows behind Zahira, taking a look around the room. He takes note of the door and points it out. "That's a little concerning."
Is the door still secured? Or does it look like whatever was inside got out?
Lady Mae |
Mae shuffles along trying to stay relatively close to Durun as they move through the ruins, doing her best to not make any more noise than possible and keeping her hand gripped tightly around her dagger, eyes alert. Everyone is creeping around quietly, I guess I should be doing the same thing? Mostly I'm just happy we didn't get covered in spiders!
Mae will take 10 on Stealth and Perception as we move through the ruins. 12 Stealth and 14 Perception.
Zahira Nefritovvy |
** spoiler omitted **
The door seems to barely hang in place, slightly open.
Knowledge (Dungeoneering) to know how this could have happened?: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Jorun Redjaw |
As Jorun follows behind, she raises her left hand and wordlessly scans it across the room passing carefully over the contents multiple times.
Detecting magic. All of it. All of the magic will be detected.
Zahira Nefritovvy |
Zahira points at the door.
"There's something in there," She whispers with a hint of excitement. "Something big."
Zahira heads toward the door, beckoning the others to come with her.
Is my Stealth check from earlier still good?
Lady Mae |
Mae looks towards Zahira with a nervous tremble on her lips and steps back next to Durun and nods toward her as if to say, I'm ready, gripping her dagger tightly, eyes ahead.
May we all live through the upcoming battles.
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun looks at the damage again. "Let us examine the rest of the area first, before we attempt this door. I will go climb that pile of rubble outside and see what I can observe on the next floor up."
Durun will go to the rubble pile and attempt to look into the room on the 2nd floor that was pointed out in the Discussion thread. Not sure where that is exactly on the map though, if you could move my icon, GM?
Celegon |
Celegon quietly follows up beside Zahira and trains his bow on the door, thinking back to the damage that they'd seen on the previous door. "I'll keep this door covered in case something decides to come out and join us."
Celegon will take 10 on Stealth and Perception as well while making his way through this area, but is focused on the door right now. Stealth: 14, Perception 17
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun will take a moment to examine the room before returning to his comrades. "There are two doors that lead out of the room above us. Should we check them out first? Or attempt to tackle whatever may be behind that door?" He points at the damaged one.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Jorun Redjaw |
Jorun grunts, speaking more loudly than is polite or particularly friendly. "Enough talking. Starved dogs and cobwebs do not scare me." With a running start, Jorun attempts to barrel through the door.
Assuming this is a straightforward strength check.
Break Door: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
GM NotEspi |
Jorun takes a short running start and hits the door. The door itself hits something on the other side and bounces back from it, sending Jorun in the opposite direction. She does manage to finish off the already damaged hinges, and the door collapses to the ground, revealing a large pile of rocks blocking a circular staircase.
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun suppresses a chuckle as the impulsive warrior bounces back from the door. From his vantage he sees the large pile of rocks and carefully approaches to see if there is a way to perhaps squeeze around/over/under the rocks or if the stairwell is completely blocked.
Durun Ghosteye |
LOL!
Durun looks back at his comrades. "Not getting anywhere this way... Only way is up now. Back to the second floor unless there's anything else we want to check out before we move on?"
Celegon |
Celegon lowers his bow from the blocked door. "Sounds like we should be good for a bit. Let me just take one more quick look around." He then begins to mumble a few arcane words while scanning the room.
Celegon casts Detect Magic just to make sure there is nothing magical in the room that they might have missed. He'll maintain this (standard action each round) until they have made it upstairs or something else interrupts them.
Zahira Nefritovvy |
Zahira doffs her armor, stows her buckler, and gives it the old University try...
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Acrobatics to soften fall?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
That didn't go so well. This time she takes a more patient approach....
I take 10 for 12.
Durun Ghosteye |
Haha, sorry didn't want to ruin any surprises!
Durun will follow behind Zahira up the wall, taking his time.
Take 10 on Climb check for a total of... 10 lol
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun points to the north door and then to his ear while he approaches the south door and presses his ear against it. He listens intently for a few moments to see if her can hear anything. Take 10 on Perception.
Durun Ghosteye |
Durun lets out a very low whistle to get his companions' attention then gestures toward the door with a nod. Once he has everyone's attention and they are ready, he will open the door. If it opens outward, then he will stay behind the door and use it for Total Cover and Concealment. If it opens inward, then he will push it open from the side. Either way he will not be standing directly in the doorway when the door is opened.
Celegon |
Celegon does his best to follow his new-found compatriots up the wall.
Taking 10 gives him an 11.
Upon reaching the top, he pulls his bow off of his shoulder and readies it while Durun stands ready to open the door.
I've included an icon on the map there. Sorry, still new to online play.
Lady Mae |
"Hey wait for me! Mae says as she puts away her dagger and follows Celegon slowly up the wall. Take 10 on climb for a 10.
GM NotEspi |
Durun opens the door and you can hear a click. Immediately afterwards, a spear emerges from the room and flies off into the distance of the Cairnlands.
Besides the odd contraption that launched the spear, the room is empty. A thick layer of dust on the floor is proof that it has been so for a while now. The room contains a door leading to the western room of the floor.
