Seeing that we're all here, we'll start. Kaa, while I have your last pre-adventure info, please post your info block in the discussion so that it can be used for other purposes. Much appreciated.

You are in Absalom, the mighty City at the Center of the World, and you’ve always longed to explore, discover, and reveal untold mysteries of Golarion. Perhaps this is why you hang out in the Flaxseed lodge, a place notorious with it's concentration of Pathfinders - the guild of historians, archaeologists, and various other scholarly professions. But no good expeditions leaves without the muscle - the majestic Absalom Pathfinder Lodge also hires brave warriors and combatants capable, among other things, of protection. There are also a few quite shady characters nobody really likes to talk about... In public, at least.

Which one will you be, then?

You've read the note in the Flaxseed Lodge, delivered by a startup immigrant half-orc. The note traveled through several hands before you saw it for the first time, but the man that wrote it now sits in front of you. A beast of a man, clad in officer's garments of the Eagle Garrison, sitting at his desk. His armor and weapon stand right here - in the office - almost illuminate the room with their shine. Though the plate and shield have several scratches, Captain Wilridge is obviously keeping it in excellent condition. He looks at you, as if judging your ability to complete this task, and you almost think you see his head shake left to right at one point. Five of your companions were enclosed in the office soon after morning when you came to volunteer for the job.

The Wilridge stands up, slowly walks to the front end of the table, and sits on top of it.

"Right. Let's get to it then. First of all, Welcome! I am Captain Wilridge, Eagle Garrison, Absalom's Watch. I am glad you have arrived on such short notice. If you'll allow me, I briefly explain the situation."

He takes a short pause to rearrange his thoughts, then continues: "If you are from around here, surely you are familiar with the Cairnlands. For those that are not from Absalom, there is an area around the city littered by graves of soldiers, destroyed siege engines, and minor collapsed forts. All of these are a residue of numerous conquerors attempting to take over this great city. It came to be called the Cairnlands. Don't ask why, I did not make that name up. My men heard rumors that one of the sealed siege castles has been laid open by a minor earthquake. Word on the street is that no one has yet entered the tower, which folks are calling the "Fallen Fortress". The word on the street is wrong, however. As a matter of fact, one of your own - a Pathfinder going by the name of Balenar - has recently ventured there to uncover any old tomes or artifacts."

He sighs heavily.

"Alone... The truth is, we gave him a note not unlike the one you read yesterday in your inn. He was supposed to hire a few men to go with him, and go look for any old maps or documents related to nobility of that time. But it seems Balenar got greedy and decided to not split the rewards or fame. I explained to him that we can not spare resources to send guards with him right now, but he insisted that he goes instantly, before anyone else beats him to it. That was several days ago. He would surely have reported back by now. So we are mounting a search and rescue expedition. You will be given a map to the fort. It is not a day's walk from here, really. Unfortunately, as I said, we can not send our own men out right now."

He takes a deep breath again, and looks at each of you.

"Questions?"

"Do you want us to try to find the artifacts, too? Or just bring back Balenar?"


The captain puts his hands on the table while to support his shoulders and bends back a bit.

"At this moment, anything is in the realm of possibility. Your main concern will be to locate Balenar and make sure he gets home safely. He might have been ambushed by highwaymen on the way there, or stuck in a collapsed room. We don't know the condition of the building after the earthquake. Though it was just a minor one, at least one wall collapsed and allowed us to gain entry."

He pauses again, but only for a moment, apparently thinking.

"For all we know, he might walk through this door in 3 minutes."

He stands up straight again, and slowly walks back to his chair on the other side of the table.

"As for any valuables in the tower itself - we don't really know whether anything useful is actually in there. If you find something, bring it back. Maps, old diplomatic contracts, anything that could be of interest. You might find nothing. We shall see."

Before sitting down, he reaches for a paper on his desk and slowly slides it to your side of the table.

"This is the map of the area east of the city. The tower is marked on it. I'm sure you'll be able to find it with this paper. There are little to no shops outside of city walls. If you are lucky, you will meet a traveling merchant, but I suggest you get anything you want while you are within the city walls."

As the captain spoke, Elutheria stood behind the others, arms crossed, head down, eyes closed, the occasional nod or furrowed brow passing on her otherwise stoic/contemplative face.

"Eager! I like it! When you are bored of ... whatever it is you do in your guild; consider a job in the city watch. We could always use initiative people here."

The captain sits down smirking. He takes out his pen out of his inkpot and gets ready to address the stack of paperwork on his table.

"Now - you folks go find yourself a bard! I'll deal with this exciting pile of documents."

Perception 16:

As you leave, you hear Wilridge sigh and mutter "Sometimes I wish I were a young trooper again." from underneath his short gray moustache.

Immediately afterwards, you set course for the area marked on Wilridge's map. After exiting Absalom through the enormous East Gate, you notice many farmhouses just outside. Wilridge said there's not much happening outside of city limits, but the immediate area near the gate seems to be just as living. Caravans and travelers slowly shuffle towards, and away from, the gate's collapsing bridge. The fields outside the walls are being worked by farmers, and the farmers' kids play around their houses. The ones that are old enough help their parents with chores in silent submission; possibly thinking of their future careers as adventurers when they see you walk nearby.

However, the road goes quiet fairly soon - within a matter of minutes, only a few houses remain in sight. You enter the Cairnlands, and suddenly face a land much more grim.

Countless sword hilts sticking out of the ground mark the resting places of entire armies - local and foreign. Not arranged, just in large swarms here and there. Graveyards filled with bodies that failed to lay siege to Absalom's mighty walls. Now and then, you see remains large metal and wooden contraptions - engines of war that failed the one single thing they were supposed to do - to overwhelm stationary brick and stone.

The road snakes ahead into Western Kortos, lined with small tree patches on each side, eventually blooming into a dense forest.

Setting up the map. I'll give you some time to have a chat with each other. Consider it a 4-6 hour (that's how long you travel. -ish) meet and greet. I don't think anyone brought cookies or cake, but it will have to do.

In the meantime - Lissaya, I will need your initiative bonus. And - Elutheria, from you I will require an image for the token.

PS: You wouldn't believe the random encounter urge I am experiencing right now.

Harrisk's eyes widen as the trees thicken. "Oh, we love the forest! Isn't that right, Goliath?"

Harrisk pets the wolf he is riding who seems to perk up at the sight of the forest as well. Goliath's tail starts wagging and he has a spring in his step and he almost seems to smile.

Ryll will let the others pick their positions in the order of march and stays in the back with her bow. She is rather silent and engages in one word responses during conversations but will open up some with Elutheria regarding holy vows.

Lissaya largely ignores the rest of the party, preferring to fly about back and forth on her pet Roc. She does frequently land to walk beside the creature to rest it from carrying her. The bird is a remarkable size; as tall as a human when standing upright.

int is +3, perception is +9. Bird's init is +4 if you want it on a separate count, although Lissaya will always be riding it, like a mount, so it may be simpler to leave them on the same count

During the course of your debates, you approach a large clearing. In its middle, stands a single tower of sun-bleached stone - determined to defy the tooth of time, though not the damage caused by tremors.

The building rises out of the churned earth of the Cairnlands. No doors or windows mar the otherwise smooth expanse of the tower’s walls. The tower is quatrefoil in plan; its eastern wing has largely collapsed, exposing the interior floors to the open air. Only the topmost level seems whole, though its eastern portion hangs precariously over the mountain of rubble left by the collapse. At ground level, the rubble frames a gaping hole in the side of the building that provides access to the tower’s darkened interior.

As you circle the tower, several dogs rest just outside the shade of the tower interior. Seeing you approach, they lift their heads and bare their teeth, growling menacingly. They do not seem rabid, you can clearly see the ribs of the canines through their skin.

Lissaya grins at the sight of the dogs. "Prey for you, buddy" she says to the Roc as she spurs him to dive at the dogs. She pulls out her shortbow and shoots an arrow at the dog the Roc is diving for.

they are within 80 feet, so Lissaya will take no ranged attack penalties for using her shortbow while the Roc charges

Senma watches the savagery as he thinks about charging up his electricity, but sees that it is likely unnecessary. "Are you guys sure we need to kill some hungry dogs?!" he asks as the Roc swoops in and Kaa attacks a wall.

Elutheria moves toward the dogs. She readies her warhammer, holding it with both hands, in case someone attacks her or anyone within her reach.

Lissaya's feathered aide swoops from the air, striking the nearest (blue) animal with it's beak. As if it were not enough, the halfling fires an arrow at the dog immediately afterwards, striking it, but merely cutting the skin. Nevertheless, it yelps loudly and attempts to run away into the distance.

With the presence of potential meal, the two other dogs take a beeline for Harrisk, ignoring the avian attacker in front of them.

Rylkwynne sees their intentions and fires her arrow, stopping one of the dogs in its tracks.

Harrisk and Goliath manage to take down the last attacking dog. Meanwhile, Lissaya's roc just can't get enough momentum to poke the escaping one.

The entrance to the tower is now decorated with 2 dog corpses. One of them ran away into the distance.

Completely missed that, sorry. They were dirty and apparently starved to a point when they attacked anything that came close. No collars. That information will have to do for now.

The northern wing of the tower seems to have escaped the worst effects of the collapse, but rubble still litters the floor and everything is covered in a thick layer of stone dust. Thick cobwebs cloak the ceiling and hang down the walls like gossamer tapestries. A single archway stands open in the southwest wall.

Perception 21:

In the webs near the ceiling, you notice an eight-legged creature dangling from the webs in this room. In the dark, you see at least six eyes looking in your general direction, and every time you touch the cobwebs, the creature twitches a bit. As if looking for something.

Kn Nature 11:

This arachnid known as a scaleback spider. It is known for throwing webs at its pray to immobilise the target before closing in to apply poison.

As Harrisk walks over to where Kaa is, he's going to try to find a small piece of wood in the rubble to grab.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Knowledge Nature: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

When he makes it up to the structure, he looks through the doorway and backs up slowly, throwing the piece of wood (if he found one) into the web.


The creature twitches again, but doesn't move otherwise.

Kaa, not quite sure what the worry is, backs up when he sees Harrisk playing with fire.


The piece of try wood catches fire and the web around it disappears almost immediately. This repeats through several layers of webbing, until the burning stick hits the ground. What happens then is quite spectacular - the accumulated dry dust and debris catch on fire in a chain reaction and a massive ball of fire emerges from within the room with a loud roar, heading for Kaa and Harrisk.

Roll a reflex for me, folks. Just Kaa and Harrisk.
