GM Niles Iron Gods |
Where is everyone?
Jarreck continues forward until he comes to another door. He opens it
The walls and ceiling of this stone room are adorned with vivid carvings of disastrous accidents: women falling off of ladders, men tripping onto hot stoves, and wagons careening sideways into crowds. A simple stone altar at the east end of the room is heaped with a tangle of bones of various shapes and sizes.
Mortimer 'Mort' Burrwaddle |
"Seems like a small temple to a god that fits that bill Guaire. You hear alot of people dying on purpose, but less so when they accidentally die. Might explain why I've never heard of a temple dedicated to such a god. I prefer the natural ways myself."
Seven.teen |
Seventeen glances in and remarks icily, "Peculiar."
The archon nods in agreement and ventures in to examine the bones.
Archon Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
As she seems to idly stand there just behind the threshold, Seventeen's autonomous neural routines categorize and assess the contents of the room.
Appraise: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27 I forgot she had this trained.
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Jarreck takes his time wandering around the obvious shriine to some god he doesn't know. Havent we run across this type of thing before....
kn:local: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 did we run across this gods worshiper before?, perhaps in the caverns/ruins below Torch.
"hmmm the wagon seems a rough way to go, the ladders and fire could be a quick end the wagon might leave you broken a while before succumbing to your injuries."
Seven I believe your comment even was "I should be really good at this" concerning appraise
GM Niles Iron Gods |
Yes you did, the two are unrelated...or ARE they!
Jarreck enters the Shrine to Zyphus, and suddenly the bones themselves knit together and form a scything tentacle that swings across the room!

Advanced Deathtrap Ooze: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (19) - 2 = 17
Deathtrap oozes are less inclined to look for prey than are other oozes—they prefer to hunt by ambush. Their ability to assume the form of simple mechanical traps has long intrigued scholars, but this ability is not something born out of intellect as much as by supernatural cunning. A deathtrap ooze lacks any creative ability—it can only mimic traps that it has encountered during its wanderings, and even then, the repertoire of trap designs it can draw upon is limited to just the last few it has encountered.
Ooze traits An ooze possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature's entry).
Mindless: No Intelligence score, and immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects). An ooze with an Intelligence score loses this trait.
Blind (but have the blindsight special quality), with immunity to gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other attack forms that rely on sight.
Immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, polymorph, and stunning.
Some oozes have the ability to deal acid damage to objects. In such a case, the amount of damage is equal to 10 + 1/2 ooze's HD + ooze's Con modifier per full round of contact.
Not subject to critical hits or flanking. Does not take additional damage from precision-based attacks, such as sneak attack.
Proficient with its natural weapons only.
Proficient with no armor.
Oozes eat and breathe, but do not sleep.

I'll trigger it as soon as you hit - HP. It's AC is 12, but it has a boatload of HP...so its kinda a race to do as much damage as possible before it digests poor Jarreck
Jarreck Lightfoot |
If Guaire would have mentioned it at any point and the charge is from a battery he would have gladly passed you some, however in his current state, not so easily. Arrows as well for that point

Why wouldn't someone heal poor Jarreck?
Round 1
Deathtrap Ooze sludges towards Jarreck! It attempts to eat him! Wow...60 damage. Jarreck is at 0HP.
Mort hurls a snowball dealing damage and 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28

Seven and her Archon deal some damage.
Jarreck [grappled] is staggered and grappled...but I think he can escape artist! EA: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9 ugh... Jarreck struggles feebly and collapses, unconscious (-1HP) and then pops back conscious with 7HP.
Omo/Hellion combine to deal some damage.
Guaire fires his arrows into the Ooze...the Ooze dies!
Oddly enough, you guys did 120dmg....it had 120HP
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Nice rolling guys
Jarreck collapses back to the floor .... "Thanks guys, that doesn't seem to accidental, more like deliberate if you ask me. That hurt." crawling away from the creature's grasp.
Seven.teen |
Monster dispatched, Seventeen has a good look around before leaving in case there was anything of interest Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29.
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Seeing that Guaires quiver is becoming increasingly empty, hands off 15 to the ranger. "You'll likely put these to better use than I, and if you down to shooting those what happened to the laser?" Think we sold the last laser rifle, it was timeworn. Not sure which you were talking about."
Once healing is complete, Jarreck will take his time searching around the shrine on the off chance someone has deposited something in a moment of reverence. If nothing found he'll move off down the hallway to the next door.
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (11) + 13 = 24

GM Niles Iron Gods |
Seven finds another nanite cocoon much like they found in the hidden area earlier in the tower.
Seven.teen |
Seventeen shows her find to the others and asks Omo, "Another one. I wonder what the significance of this is?"
Shall we try the next door round? Assuming Jarreck has had enough healing. @Niles Seventeen's Archon sticks around for 8 minutes - please let me know when that time has elapsed.
GM Niles Iron Gods |
@Seven Ok
Jarreck leads the party along the passages to the south, he notices one spot of wall that looks different that the other parts of the wall around it. A quick check of the wall reveals its solid stone, but its been altered by magic. Seven deduces that Furkas changed the tunnel here with magic...
Jarreck continues on and opens the next door
This wide room contains a desk and three large windows looking into narrow cells. The window of the northernmost cell is shattered outward and the cell within appears empty. The middle window is intact, the floor of the cell inside strewn with a carpet of dead insects. The southern window is also intact and there are thousands of squirming worms on the floor of the cell.
Seven.teen |
Seventeen whispers an arcane phrase to attune herself to the ethereal and attempts to examine the aftereffects of Furkas's magic to determine what he did here.
Kn:arcarna: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29
When Jarreck reports back, Seventeen initially responds with one word, "Peculiar." After several moments she suddenly asks, "We can surmise Furkas died some time ago, why are the worms still alive where the insects are not? What do they eat?"
I get the impression most of these rooms have something to fight in them, do we want to risk a fight with what might be a swarm? Possibly an undead one at that.
Mortimer 'Mort' Burrwaddle |
Mort comes to look over at the mentioning of worms and insects on the floor and kneels down to investigate them.
Knowledge nature: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (17) + 14 = 31
Anything unusual about these critters?
GM Niles Iron Gods |
The entire Tower is filled with auras, making identifying any one thing really difficult. However this room seems to be similar to the laboratories in the upper floors, complete with a viewing window and airlock.
Seven and Mort are inspecting the worms for a few moments when suddenly they form together into a vaguely humanoid shape.
Why are you here? Who are you the shape demands, its wormy head facing you through the viewing port.
Seven.teen |
Seventeen takes one look at the creature and backs away in alarm!
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
She glances at Mort and asks, "Do you think we should answer that?"
Niles which knowledge skill to identify the creature?
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Jarreck remains towards the rear of the group still not feeling too well after the previous encounter, however once the creature stands he tries to decern wether he has come across this before....
kn:Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14
More than likely not.
Mortimer 'Mort' Burrwaddle |
Can I keep my 31 roll from before?
"I'm not sure Seven. I don'te think I Should Do the taling. Greetings! We are guests in this tower. Are you a friend of the keeper of this Tower?"
GM Niles Iron Gods |
Sure, its a worm that walks Ofc, its not the exact same as the bestiary, but Mort would know the basics.
A friend? the creature says Hardly. The Master of this place has kept me here, for his own amusement. I know much about this place, and can give you a great treasure if you open the hatch and free me.
Omo Nijj |
Reports of my recovery were greatly exaggerated. Still alive though. Haha. Will post when I can.
"Just because something has an alternative biology shouldn't mean we are suspicious of it. However, the master of the tower had the unfortunate habit of imprisoning unpleasant things."
Guaire |
Guaire tries to get a reading on the worm humanoid.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
"That's true, Omo."
To the creature,
"Do you have a name, and how, and why, did he came to capture you?"
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Jarreck doesn't say much; unsure as to what magic allows this thing to stand upright much less speak with the companions. However he can listen to what is said and the inflections it is spoken with.
sense motive: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Seven.teen |
In a voice that's all cold logic, Seventeen asks, "Beyond a vicious stereotype, what makes you believe we'd be interested in treasure?" She's completely serious too, material possessions are of little interest to her.
GM Niles Iron Gods |
The being regards Guaire for a few moments before responding.
Our name is Nargin Haruvex. How Xoud captured us is a tale of our own failure. Why. We cannot answer. We believe he is interested in our hive mind.
Nargin turns its "face" towards Seven Aren't you? If not treasure, knowledge? We have learned much in these years trapped here. We know the Ghost Xoud's weaknesses, how to bypass his traps and what he keeps in his inner sanctum.
The creature is far too alien in nature for Sense Motive to work normally.
Jarreck Lightfoot |
Still standing at the hallway feeling a bit rough around the edges and unsure about the creature, Jarreck maintains his watch. Noticing again the broken window, he calls out "What was in the area that has escaped?"
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20 listening and watching for something that is not the creature the are speaking with
Jarreck's feeling a bit out of his element here, goblins, bugbears, he understands, stick a dagger in them they bleed - planar creatures, demons, and eldritch leftovers.....
GM Niles Iron Gods |
The being known as Nargin Haruvex regards Jarreck A Hellwasp swarm. It escaped some years ago.
Seven.teen |
Noting her brother's comment, Seventeen suggests, "It appears we have a common enemy. Twice we have faced Xoud and twice he has retreated through the walls or the floor. Together perhaps he can be defeated. Trust seems a problem however, everything else in this tower has proved to be unrelentingly aggressive. Hence our dilemma. What do you suggest?"
Seventeen is LN after all. If the creature can keep its word she's quite prepared to live and let live.
Mortimer 'Mort' Burrwaddle |
Mort looks on as the others converse with the wormy fellow.
At the mention of hellwasp swarms he seems to think deeply trying to remember any thing about them. They are insects after all.
knowledge nature: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29
GM Niles Iron Gods |
They are extraplanar insects, so Kn:Planes is the skill you are looking for.
Haruvex responds to Guaire's query We do not have an accurate way to measure time in this place. But yes, it seems long ago, several hundred feeding cycles.
Haruvex replies to Seven We wish to be free. If you wish us to fight at your side, We will do what We must to be free of this place. We have been trapped here for too long.
Guaire |
"Feeding cycles....."
Guaire looks at the others.
"If you had a pet or animal to feed, you'd often feed it once or twice a day. If this even remotely is similar, then those hellwasps would have escaped several hundred days ago.
A year at least."
Omo Nijj |
"I don't like the idea of leaving another thinking creature trapped, but I struggle to know whether helping you would be in our long term interests. We would not free a daemon. What is your impact on other sentient creatures? Are they your primary source of food? Does hurting others provide you with pleasure?"
GM Niles Iron Gods |
Nargin Haruvex answers Omo Ah. Morals. We remember those. We have no need of consuming Sentient beings, if that is what you are asking. We exist. We thirst for knowledge. Hurting Xoud would bring us pleasure. Hurting others does not, knowledge will bring us pleasure. Power too, sometimes. Ahhh. A Daemon. Xoud still has the Leukodaemon trapped here. We know its True Name. We could banish it for 100 years and a day if you would like us to.
Omo Nijj |
Omo washes his paws together nervously. He hates the idea of leaving another sentient creature trapped for the foreseeable future. He also knows that hope can lead to misplaced trust.
"I think if we left Nargin here when we have the ability to free him we would be no better than his captor. If the hive mind promises not to harm, enslave, or otherwise do something horrific to us and promises to banish the demon and aid us against Xoud, then I think we should release it."
Seven.teen |
In her customary monotone, Seventeen concurred, "A logical proposal Omo. I agree."
