Valen jerks awake and looks about himself urgently. He lets out a sigh seeing his companions around him and clambers to his feet, weary but ready to move on. "I was felled by a door," amusement colours his voice. As if to prove his previous attempt a fluke Valen dances through the blades guarding the door to the stairs and beckons the others to follow.

Gail finishes applying the bandages and tells the others, "Well that stopped the bleeding. He needs an hour or so before it's safe to move him. With luck he'll be moving by then."

Unhappily Gail notes, "Well unless you can fly, there's another two doors between the Attic here and the main staircase, I suppose we just need to get on with it."

She waits for the right moment before stepping forward. The blades whistle through the air harmlessly.

Malthorn takes a hit as he crosses the door's threshold, a heavy hit as it was. Staggering forward he slumps against the wall and slides down into a sitting position.

"Think I'm just going to sit down a mom e n t...sngh!" a soft snore coming from the tiefling as the wounds he sustained take their tole. After a while he settles and rest comfortably coming awake quickly as Valen stirs.

Short Rest Heal: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 6hp+8hp(fiendish vigor)=14hp total

Moving to join the others, he studies the flying blades and tries to step through.

Talus watches the other leap through the spinning blades, trying to see the pattern...if there was one.

Finally, nodding, certain he had the timing right, he leapt...

Gonna go ahead and make a change right now. As written the doorways deal 2d10 damage, but since I haven't allowed you guys to take a long rest I'm going to drop that to 2d6.

The party rests a while in the attic before continuing on. The oppresive nature of the House is wearing on their psyche.

Gail manages to get through the doorway to the stairs leading down from the Attic.

The secret doorways aren't trapped with Blades. You can get all the way to the bottom floor if you want.

To the bottom floor then? I don't think exploring the rest of the place is feasible with blades on all the normal doors.

Valen leads the way to the entrance of the house, hoping Thornboldt had managed to keep it open.

The completest in me hates the idea of leaving so much uncovered, but Gail on the other hand has different ideas.

On the completionist side I agree but Lorgoth was kicking our butts down there, and the bladed doors as well. Rest seems to be in order, however finding a safe place could be interesting as well.

Hurrying, he follows the others on thier journey out of the accursed house, "Let's see what awaits us, Mal. First , we must escape!"

The party makes their way down the stairs to the bottom floor of the House. They see that indeed the doors are open, and the mist is gone! However, two portals of bladed death stand between the heroes and freedom.

Realizing what is between them and freedom Gail grumbles, "Oh Sylvanus have mercy!" She whispers a prayer begging Sylvanus for aid and touches Talus on the shoulder, judging that his wounds make this escape particularly risky.

Gail casts guidance and Talus can add 1d4 on a his int check

Taking a deep breath, Gail launches herself through the first blade encrusted portal however her timing was off and she had twist violently in mid air to avoid getting eviscerate!

Somewhat shaken she takes a moment to recover and waits for Talus to get through before praying again for aid on his behalf. That done she looks at the final portal appraisingly and this time she gets the timing right and simply steps through...

Talus almost despairs seeing two more sets of deadly doorway to negotiate.

He turns towards Valen to ask for a measure of his divine healing, but only sees the paladin's back as he jumps through the doors unscathed.

Feelling Gail's gently touch on his shoulder, he smiles in thanks as his confidence gains a boost.

Taking a deep breath, Talus follows Gail through the first set of spinning blades....

Seeing Talus likely fall between the two sets of blades, Malthorn rises back up and moves back towards the door aiming his staff at the base of the blades if he can see the mechanism firing eldritch blast at it.

For a moment Talus thinks he's cleared the first set of deadly door, giving Gail a small smile. However, a blade swings out, out of sequence he thinks, and strikes him high on his torso, spinning him around into a heap on the ground.

Gail did state above she'd wait after the first portal to use Guidance on Talus, so lets assume she banadages him up before leaving.

Gail grin at Talus, he made it! Then suddenly to her profound horror a rusty blade suddenly swings out and cuts him horribly. Gasping involuntary she steps back and has to stifle a sob, her friend was bleeding out and she didn't have time to process what just happened.

Mechanically she kneels down and tries to get the bleeding under control, but the wounds are so deep it seems hopeless. Undeterred she tries again, she can't let him die like this!

Feeling rather dislocated Gail remarks, "That is rather odd... I don't remember a town!" She blows her cheeks out and shivers slightly, the damp had gotten to her and the wind was chilling, but that wasn't the only reason she was shivering. Looking around the lonely god forsaken place, she states the obvious, "We're here now. Best find out where here is, and if there's someplace safe to rest. Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm exhausted."

Encounter Map

The dirt path the heroes stand on is wide, perhaps 20 feet of dirt road. It runs north/south with wooden buildings all along it. To the north, perhaps 100 feet away the road turns to the west. To the south there is an East/West road forming an intersection. The North/South road continues south continues another 80 feet before it turns west as well.

Gail:
Gail you spot someone in a nearby building peering out from behind curtains in a second floor window. They see you looking in their direction and hurriedly move away from the window.

Malthorn looks back and forth along the roadway in the deserted town, "Should be a Inn here somewhere if nothing else, the homes may have a surprise or two in still inhabited. We need something defensible where we can hole up for a while and recuperate. That house was brutal."

Gail nods, Malthorn was right about surprises. Seeing sudden motion, she whispers, "Gents, we're not alone. Somebody saw us, second floor window over there, they're hiding now. Should we mosey on over and introduce ourselves?"

Talus glances back at the 'house' they just left, then up and down the street, "Introduce ourselves. We probably just left this town's most notorious edifice. I doubt the person you saw want to make our acquaintance. I agree with Mal, let's find ourselves somewhere to lay our heads and go from there."

Malthorn nods as a decision is come to about the next few hours of time. "No worries Gail, we'll meet the welcome wagon here so to speak; sooner or later. Let's move out."

Moving to the south and looking both east and west at the intersection, he moves towards the center of town looking for an inn.

Malthorn begins leading the party towards the town center. The first evidence of people can be seen. Eventually, the party spots a person, a heavily cloaked woman washing clothes in a basin. The woman upon seeing the party bustles inside her ramshackle home. The entire village feels oppressed and ominous.

Talus follows the others into the store, idly looking about. However, his head swivels quickly to look incredulously at Malthorn as the un-wise tiefling reveals the manner in which they came to town.

He sidles up next to Malthorn and puts his arm around his shoulders, smiling and addressing the shopkeep , "Pardon my friend here, he recieved a few too many knocks to the head as a youngster. Mal, you remember now don't you, we're in Barovia."

The gloomy faced man grunts at the mention of the Durst House.

I see. My name is Bildrath Cantemir, this is my shop. There is a Tavern across the square. Perhaps they have room for you. the man continues to stare dourly at you.

On the map E2 is the Tavern

If you go to the Tavern:

A single shaft of light thrusts illumination into the main square, its brightness looking like a solid pillar in the heavy fog. Above the gaping doorway, a sign hangs precariously askew, proclaiming this to be the Blood on the Vine tavern.
The tavern building is about 60 feet square. Close inspection of the sign reveals that it originally read "Blood of the Vine." (An "n" has been scratched over with the "f.") This once finely appointed tavern has grown shoddy over the years. A blazing fire in the hearth gives scant warmth to the few huddled souls within. They include the barkeep, three Vistani sitting together, and a man who sits by himself at a corner table, sipping his wine.

Gail didn't particularly need anything beyond sleep, but she thought she'd ask what the shop had for sale. Stifling a yawn, she asked, "Well met Bildrath. Uh pardon me, I's been rather a long day... Anyway what sort of things do you have for sale? I could probably use a new canteen, my one is old and kind of battered."

'My isn't he the taciturn type. Who knows if I buy something small maybe he'll be more forthcoming.' thought Gail.

Trying to take a hint from his companions Malthorn remains relatively quiet when they enter the Inn across the way simply asking for a drink, studying the people about the room.

insight: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5 my my that is a wonderful sconce they have over there...hmm was very fashion forward oh 300 years ago

The man nods to the stacks and shelves and grunts Prices are marked. Don't let your fingers get sticky or I'll sic Perriwimple on ya.

A heavily muscled man in an old leather jerkin comes into view. You get the sense that he is a bit of a simpleton.

Bildrath will sell anything in the PHB normally costing less than 25GP. He will also charge 10x normal price for it.

Malthorn who was looking at some bracers laying on the shelf quickly returned them to the shelf. Fingerings the pouch containing 3gp. Gonna need to do some saving to shop in here....sigh

Gail picks up a canteen examines it and does a double take at the price, crikey that was expensive. She gingerly puts it back down and looks at several other items, all exorbitantly priced. Stifling another yawn, she remarks under her breath, "Perhaps another day, once I've won the lottery..." Turning to her friends she suggests, "Shall we try the inn? I think we've darkened this good fellow's doorstep for long enough."

Valen nods sympathetically at Gail's yawn and statement, "Yes, rest is what we need right now. Hopefully it won't be as expensive as this place." The latter remark is kept under his breath so only his allies can hear him.

As they come up to the inn Valen greets the sign with a remark, "I really hope that name means they specialize in red wines, and not... less savoury beverages."

When he enters Valen walks up to the barkeep and asks how much food and board will cost for his allies and himself.
