"Hey guys, you know how there is supposedly a baby in this house? How come we've not heard crying?" Siobhan asks somewhat sarcastically.

After peering up the cobweb-laden staircase, she says, "Huh. Forgive me if I don't completely agree with you Valen."

Despite her protests, however, Siobhan will follow the group up the secret stairs.

Gail peered up the dusty stairs and frowned unhappily for a moment.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Seemingly coming to some decision she echoed Malthorne's words, "Considering the evil Valen sensed, it's imperative we find the kid first. Later we shall surely head up for it appears the job of cleansing this place falls to us. Joy."

She then methodically listens to each of the other doors on the landing in turn.

Well I'm guessing she does not notice the second secret door. So lets try the red door to the north unless there's some good reason not to?

Encounter Map

Gail listens at all the doors, and hears nothing. She does notice that the paneling which seemed to be normally carved with woodland scenes of trees, falling leaves, and tiny critters. She instead notices tiny corpses hanging from the trees and worms bursting up from the ground.

She points to the paneling and adds scornfully, "Macabre, tasteless and no doubt rather expensive decorations. I'm definitely noticing a theme in this place. Anyway lets try the door to the north?"

She walks over and if nobody disagrees, she tries to open it.

Gail opens the door to reveal a Master Suite. The double doors to this room have dusty panes of stained glass set into them. Designs in the glass resemble windmills. The dusty, cobweb-filled master bedroom (area 12A) has burgundy drapes covering the windows. Furnishings include a four-poster bed with embroidered curtains and tattered gossamer veils, a matching pair of empty wardrobes, a vanity with a wood-framed mirror and jewelry box, and a padded chair. A rotting tiger-skin rug lies on the floor in front of the fireplace, which has a dust-covered portrait of Gustav and Elisabeth Durst hanging above it. A web-filled parlor in the southwest corner contains a table and two chairs. Resting on the dusty tablecloth is an empty porcelain bowl and a matching jug. A door facing the foot of the bed has a full-length mirror mounted on it.

I didn't ask this earlier, but who has a light source?

Sorry it wasn't so clear. Siobhan cast light on a rock she carries with her.

Malthorn opens the door and Siobhan shines her light to reveal an empty dust choked closet.

"I am finding it less and less likely we will find a babe here." Valen peers over Siobhan's shoulder into the empty, dusty closet. "As far as I can tell it doesn't seem anyone has lived here for years." He searches about the parlor beside the closet for anything unusual.

Gail looked at him, and glanced at the cobweb infested room and back again before adding, "The children outside seemed real enough, although all this" She gestures at the abandoned rooms and macabre gothic detailing, "and those infernal mists are enough to make me wonder what the heck is going on here. We need to know more, lets start at the very top and work out way down?"

It occurred to Gail that there might indeed be a baby here, just not one that was living and breathing... Either way she had to find out.

Encounter Map

Valen searches the room a little more thoroughly and finds a jewelry box.

Treasure:
The jewelry box on the vanity is made of silver with gold filigree (worth 75 gp). It contains three gold rings (worth 25 gp each) and a thin platinum necklace with a topaz pendant (worth 750 gp).

Valen opens the door to find an exterior balcony...the mists lap just on the edge of the balcony.

Valen pockets the jewelry box with good intentions. There is obviously something wrong with this house. If we find the owners and they don't attempt to kill us I will return their jewelry. If we don't... we get paid. He nods to Malthorn.

On the balcony he attempts to see through the mists.

Spectre: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

A ghastly creature forms and attacks! It looks like a malnourished young woman of about 20. She has marks on her face and hands that look almost..ritualistic.

Kn:Arcane Dc16:
The marks are necromantic in nature and were no doubt used in some profane ritual.

Kn:Religion DC 11:
The Creature is a specter.A specter is the angry, unfettered spirit of a humanoid that has been prevented from passing to the afterlife. Specters no longer possess connections to who or what they were, yet are condemned to walk the world forever. Some are spawned when dark magic or the touch of a
wraith rips a soul from a living body. When a ghost's unfinished business is completed, it can rest at last. No such rest or redemption awaits a specter. It is doomed to the Material Plane, its only end the oblivion that comes with the destruction of its soul. Until then, it bears out its lonely life in forlorn places, carrying on forgotten through the ages of the world. Living creatures remind the specter that life is beyond its grasp. The mere sight of the living overwhelms a specter with sorrow and wrath, which can be abated only by destroying said life. A specter kills quickly and mercilessly, for only by depriving others of life can it gain the slightest satisfaction. However, no matter how many lives it extinguishes, a specter always succumbs to its hatred and sorrow.
Sunlight represents a source of life that no specter can ever hope to douse, and it pains them. When night falls, they leave their final resting places in search of living creatures to slay, knowing that few weapons can harm them in return. At the first light of dawn, they retreat back into the darkness, where they remain until night falls again.
Specters are resistant to normal nonmagical weapons

With a certain amount of trepidation Gail searches the room, "Wardrobe, bed, mirror. Normal enough, no I take that back. The mirror has carved eyeballs among the ivy and berry frame. That's more than a little wierd. Oh secret door, I wonder what's up there? And there's crib, oh gods there's something in it..."

She rushes over to check what's inside.
Nooo Gail! Don't! It's going to be something awful: a zombie or a demon child!

Releasing Valen's hand, Malthorn's own eyes seem to loose focus to those watching him..

"Wha, huh .... yes, I'm listening,..why is this armor no good?.. well yes it is tight now that you mention it and pulls across the shoulders at times; but to go without armor that's crazy..look in my pack, two slips of parchment, hold on a sec.."

To those watching Malthorn appears to be having a conversation with himself, yet listening closely a whispered windd of shshing can be heard. Digging throug his pack he has a confused look as he withdraws two pieces of parchment he hadn't known were there. A strange writing appears on them as he unfolds them m a g u s a r m a t u r a m seemingly written in blood red ink by a jet black flame.

"Yes I can remember that,.. I have a choice to make?.. He says as the conversation continues " Once my decision is made it will appear on the second parchment, yes I understand. Thank you."

With that the shshing sound is gone and Malthorn begins removing his armor, explaining as he went. "My patron it appears has access to this plane although he would NOT tell me where we are, however he has given me access to some more of his power, deciding I need better protection, I think he's just protecting his investment to be honest but better protection is better protection. Magus Armaturam!" As the words are spoken Malthorn physically looks quicker and more capable as a sheens seems to surround him momentarily beforre disappearing. Rolling his armor up, he quickly stuffs it in his back pack.

"Gail what are you doing at that bed??"

Gail glanced at Malthorn with concern when he started taking armour off. Although he seemed to know what he was doing as he cast some sort of spell. She answered his question, "There's something baby-sized in the crib..."

Talus slides up beside the others, looking down at the pathetic, but terrifying, figure in the crib.

"Uh, Valen....." he says to the Paladin, waving his hand near his eyes, indicating that Valen use his holy vision once more.\\
