Encounter Map

So, a tiefling is casting magic in a room full of probably superstitious peasant folk, what could go wrong?

The garishly dressed man, who speaks of himself in the third person, calls himself Rictavio and seems to be telling a story of a princess who locked herself away in a tower and would magically raise suitors up to the top of the tower with her hair. The story seems tragic, because Rictavio makes it seem like the suitors never come down from the tower.

The two hunters never stir, or even look up besides a short glance, they continue to drink their wine and mutter to each other.

Danika takes Gail's money and bites the coins, she nods approvingly and shouts Brom and Bray, we have guests! and two young boys scamper out of the back kitchen. They will take your belongings and show you to your room.

An EP is 5GP if you are counting.

Hey, in a land ruled by the devil; I'm surprised they let me anywhere in the country without poking me full of holes with their crossbows, but the plan was not to be over the top just to fill it out.

Talus enters the main room, glad to have adequate lodging after their arduous journey.

He courteously holds a chair out for Ireena before sitting himself with a great sigh.

He favours Gail with a smile and passes a gold coin to her for his share of their lodgings.

Listening to Rictavio's tale, he thinks "A tale that suits this place...no happy endings here, I think."

Returning from placing his gear in their room, he orders Red Dragon for the table and gratefully takes in a mouthful, observing the room like the others....

Gail didn't learn anything desperately interesting from her observations. Even the garishly dressed story teller was peddling a melancholic story. There really was something about this country that got under the skin...

After finishing her food, Gail remarks, "We've had a long day. Maybe it's best to retire for the night."

Unless something happens, she's going up to bed. Although she wont actually go to sleep, not until everyone is up.

Sorry for the late update

The party retires to its rooms. Ismark and Ireena also retire for the evening.

The next morning a hearty breakfast of beets and warmed wine is available. The hunters are gone from the taproom, but Rictavio is present, and currently chatting with the two young boys. Ismark and Ireena have not come from their room yet.

Gail rises with the dawn and meditates, as always since coming here, Lord Sylvanus feels very far away although not so far away she doesn't receive her spells. Still it's not quite the same and Gail can't help but feel disturbed.

After having eaten she climbs the stairs and knocks on Ismark & Ireena's room and calls out softly, "It's morning, breakfast's up."

Sorry, it was homecoming week and I kept meaning to get to this one and failed.

Rictavio replies to Malthorn Ah, I noticed your arcane skill! It made the tale a little more worth telling yes? Tell me, what is your tale. You have the look of an outsider. Not a Barovian, not a Vistani, who are you?

"A traveler from Waterdeep, some would say an adventurer, but not sure I've reached that distinction yet. And as my fiery friend has stated we help people." Malthorn answers with a smile.

Encounter Map

Rictavio smiles and nods, its not evident if he knows what you are talking about.

InsightDC14:
Did Rictavio just give you a double take when you said Waterdeep? It's almost as if he recognized the place!

Ah, well. If its people you wish to help, these poor blighters in Vallaki could use it! Why, I heard just yesterday that this lovely Inn was nearly out of wine! Someone says the Winery hasn't sent any in a week! Also, the good Father Lucian has been droning on for days about how someone stole some sacred bones, or something. He actually said that "Vallaki is at risk" Silly man.

Can Gail use the roll above?

If so:
Gail watched Rictavio closely, he recognized Waterdeep she could have sworn it!

She walked over to Malthorn and added, "They say anyone who has travelled past The Friendly Arm is going to have an adventure, like it or not... Your home was a fair step from Candlekeep if I remember." She favoured Rictavio with an enigmatic look before saying, "A shortage of wine... Well some of our companions may be partially to blame! Suppose they wanted to stretch their legs, but didn't want to be reminded of grape and fermentation, which way should they avoid? Oh and suppose further, on account of their delicate constitution, they wished to avoid droning melodrama. Which part of town should be off limits?"

Yes the questions were aimed at Rictavio. She is asking for directions to both the Winery and Father Lucian in a round about way. I.e. if you don't want to meet Lucian, definitely do not go to X (where X is Lucian's place).

Encounter Map

Ah ok. Any particular reason for the "beating around the bush"?

Rictavio gives a brief (15 minutes) description of Vallaki and details where both St. Andrus Chapel N1 in the town of Vallaki and the Wizard of the Wines Winery W on the map of Barovia

He says that the Winery is owned by the Martikov family, the same family that owns the Blue Water Inn the inn you are currently staying at

Okay, to St. Andral's Church!

The heroes break their fast and depart from the Blue Water Inn. In the wan morning light they get a better look at the town of Vallaki. It's more colorful, and less dreary than the Village of Barovia. Several store and home fronts are brightly painted, and people bustle too and fro with less dread in their steps. The party hears the phrase All will be well several times, mostly as the townsfolk greet each other. There are several patrols of armed guards that pass the party, eyeing them warily, especially those who wear weapons openly.

Eventually the heroes make it to St. Andrals

This slouching, centuries-old stone church has a bulging steeple in the back and walls lined with cracked, stained glass windows depicting pious saints. A fence of wrought iron encloses a garden of gravestones next to the church. A thin mist creeps among the graves.

Upon entering the Chapel, the heroes spot an elderly priest walking the floor talking with a boy who is sweeping the floor. There is also a young man in his late teens present, he is carrying a shovel and scowls fiercely at the heroes as they enter.

Malthorn and Gail:
This Church is dedicated to a Saint Andral, a noted priest of the Morninglord. Gail knows a little of this Barovian Morninglord which bears only a superficial resemblance to Lathander. The Church looks remarkable similar to the one in Barovia Village.
