Encounter Map

In the city of Korvosa a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker asked you to escort several wagonloads of provisions the rough and tumble settlement of Phandalin a couple of days travel northwest of the city. Gundren was clearly excited and more than a little secretive about his reasons for the trip, saying only that he and his brothers had found something "big" and that he would pay you ten gold pieces each to escort the wagons safely to Barthen's Provisions in Phandalin. He then set out ahead of you on horseback along with several others whom he had hired claiming he needed to "take care of business".

You have spent the last two days following the Coast Road north from Korvosa and you have just recently veered off onto the "Triboar Trail" You have encountered no trouble this far and Phandalin is only a few hours away. But this territory can be dangerous, goblins and bandits have been known to lurk on the trail.

Open for dotting, also some RP. Who is driving the wagons? There isn't a particular skill involved and anyone can be doing it. Inspiration will be awarded for roleplaying your background/ideals/bond/flaws!.

"Well a process man am I and I'm tellin' you no lie
I work and breathe among the fumes that tread across the sky
There's thunder all around me and there's poison in the air
There's a lousy smell that smacks of hell and dust all in me hair!"

Lyle's bare feet bounce against the edge of the wagon as he bangs rhythmically on a small drum, timing it to the bangs and creaks of the wagon.

"And it's go boys go, well time your every breath, for every day you're in this place it's two days nearer death, but you go..."

The sardonic little halfling stands about average for his race, easily the height of a human child. Cuirbouilli leather armour is strapped tightly around him, affording him a bit of protection, covered by a gaily decorated tabard. His hair is brown and shaggy, falling to around his ears and on his head he wears an ornate hat with a large feather.

"Well I've worked among the spitters and I breathe the oily smoke
I've shoveled adamantine and it neigh 'on makes you choke
I've stood knee deep carbauxine, got sick with a caustic burn
Been working rough, I've seen enough, to make your stomach turn and it's go boys go.."

Lyle finally finishes banging out his song on the drum and sets it aside.

"That's the Gas Forge Worker's Song boyos - any town that drinks as hard as Riddleport isn't a good one to work in, savvy? The moral of that story is any job with money that good is either for the nobility or will kill yeh."

The wagon continues to bounce along predictably.

"Well I'm bored. Where are those goblins people were talking about?"

nice song

The wagon's wheel creaked as it first dropped down into the rut and then groaned as the horses pulled it back out and over the root that caused the rut in the first place. All strangely enough in rhythm to the bard's tune.

After two days of sitting on the plank seat, Morgran swore he had a splinter at least a foot long working it's way through his backside. "Hi'app! come'on now" he called to the horses urging them on, then chuckling to himself "'Ware what ye ask fer, there Lyle. T'wont be near as much fun when you sprout feathers. Then again, guess we can put you back together if'n needs be."

Between the frosted edges of his beard and the dust from the road it was hard to tell the true color of the dwarf's black beard, but the blue eyes cut through the grime, glinting in the morning sunlight. Leaning back against his shield, using it as a backrest he looks to Bec and Andrei.. "Alrighty boys, Lyle is bor'd and wants some goblins t'play with, what say ye? Got any back there on the buckboards? Or perhaps our fiery little mage Ynara can conjure him some up."

All the while the dwarf, fingers the handle of his warhammer leaning against the seat next to him. Sparring matches with the others helped to keep his skill in place but not near as well as an actual fight with serious consequences on the line if he failed.

For two weeks he'd spent his days helping out at the inn and the smith located next door earning his room and board, while he looked to find someone who knew Gundrun rockseeker. One evening the pair, Lyle and Andrei, had been in the tavern enjoying their supper and listening to Kayla sing. The girl had the voice of an angel, not a bit of common sense in her head, and moves to make a Calisham belly dancer drool; drew a sizable crowd most nights.

It so happened that they had sat at the next table and were talking about work and Gundrun. He took a moment of their time and explained his story; providing the missive and a letter of recommendation from Brother Darkvein when they thought he'd spent a little too much time in his cups. Shrugging they promised to introduce him to Gundrun the next day.

Gundrun listened to his story without comment, read the missive and and commendation from the temple brother looking the young dwarf up and down. "While ya story might be true and then agin it might not, I'll give ye a chance. I di'nna have a clue as to what my part in this is, but I'll play it fer now."

That was two weeks back.....

Ho! A good song there lyle, said the mail clad warrior.

The man was clearly a young man, a half elf to boot but his hair had grey in it and his features creased with trouble and woe.

If you sung that in a tavern I dare say you'd have made some coppers from the crowd. Sadly all I can offer you is my thanks for making the road a bit easier

While he was clearly strong he had taken to lessening the weight of his armour by riding along side the dwarf driving the wagons and had taken over for short spells to give the dwarvish warrior some rest. His hands confident and steady when it was his turn to drive.

For now he walked alongside the wagon, confident but looking concerned by Morgrans mention of Goblins. I've had some hard learning there Morgran - no, I seek no battles, be they goblins or bandits but I'll not break and run from any battle either.

He looked over to check on Ynara. How goes it? The road does not fatigue you? Maybe you can take a bit riding on the wagon.

Ain’t none of that, not me. He thought maybe for the… well, a really high number. Bec had left his village, because everyone in the army said he had future, with such big arms and powerful body, an adventure life was the best thing.

Walking behind the others, Bec kept nodding at their words, a trick he learned since young. Give other folks impression you are smart and you understand everything, even when you don’t!

”Aye, good song.” he repeated, but truth be told, he didn’t understand a line of it.

Lyle nods agreeably as he watches the countryside bounce by, far too slowly for his tastes.

"Know your audience. The dwarves in Riddleport pay very, very good money for that stuff. They all have too much money and a desperate need to enjoy life for the couple of days they get off. That stuff never played in Magnimar unless it was bored merchant-class types who want to learn about the pain of the working dwarf."

Lyle tucks away his drum and pulls out a flute. He blows over it experimentally, frowns, and then starts adjusting it and tuning.

You've been on the Triboar Trail for several hours as you come around a bend you spot two dead horses sprawled about 50 feet in front of you, blocking the path. Each has several black feathered shafts sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

But if we send forth illusions of us inspecting the horses, the bandits will attack the illusions while the rest of us can be in position to foil the ambush."

Lyle quickly starts weaving his hands.

Death Saving Throws:

Whenever you start your turn with 0 hit points, you
must make a special saving throw, called a death saving
throw, to determine whether you creep closer to death
or hang onto life. Unlike other saving throws, this one
isn’t tied to any ability score. You are in the hands o f fate
now, aided only by spells and features that improve your
chances o f succeeding on a saving throw.
Roll a d20. If the roll is 10 or higher, you succeed.
Otherwise, you fail. A success or failure has no effect
by itself. On your third success, you become stable (see
below). On your third failure, you die. The successes
and failures don't need to be consecutive; keep track
o f both until you collect three of a kind. The number of
both is reset to zero when you regain any hit points or
become stable.
Rolling 1 or 20. When you make a death saving throw
and roll a 1 on the d20, it counts as two failures. If you
roll a 20 on the d20, you regain 1 hit point.
Damage at 0 Hit Points. If you take any damage while
you have 0 hit points, you suffer a death saving throw
failure. If the damage is from a critical hit, you suffer
two failures instead. If the damage equals or exceeds
your hit point maximum, you suffer instant death.

As Andre falls, Lyle's eyes go wide.

"You vermin!"

A brief battle between the halfling's rage at the goblin and concern for his companions plays out in his mind before he angrily casts a small spell, sending an arc of white energy southwards.

Healing Word: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

Moving southwards to get in range and casting healing word on Andrei.

Combat Over... the other two goblins fled down a small fork in the trail.

Loots:
The goblins had scimitars/short bows and small shields as well as smelly leather armor. One of them had a crudely drawn pictograph of a claw and some strange scrawlings. Also they goblins have 2d6 ⇒ (5, 5) = 10 gold peices among their possessions.

I am... definitely feeling worse for wear - my thanks Lyle.

Have we lost Ynara as a player? Should we sub in Bec and have Ynara wait with the wagon or something?

Lyle salutes the fleeing goblins and cleans his rapier. He dispassionately pats down the dead goblins. Gingerly, he takes the scimitars, short bows, and shields, ignoring the armour.

"Good fight, and hey, someone has to take all the hits, right? That's ten gold so... two gold, five silver each. Also, curious about this claw. Anybody savage green idiot? May just be some clan marking. Could be instructions though."
