***OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT
”The Decemvirate are truly grateful that so many of you have answered this summons to the Grand Lodge, for they, above all, know the trying lives that field agents endure. Indeed, you have only to look about this courtyard and gaze upon your colleagues to know they have come from all ends of Golarion to be among us. Look not grim, but rather determined, for this summons is not one brought of dire threat or terrible consequence. No! The Decemvirate has instead summoned you to taste the opportunity to enter the greatest contest of martial arts the world has ever known—the Ruby Phoenix Tournament”
”The legacy of Tian Xia’s legendary mystic arcanist, the nearly immortal Grandmaster Hao Jin, the Ruby Phoenix Tournament is held only once every ten years. The Tournament is run by Sifu Xho Nuo, Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix and sole heir to Hao Jin’s secrets. The prize for victory: an artifact pulled from Hao Jin’s fabled collection of the greatest wonders Golarion has ever known”
”Though Xho Nuo has made no formal announcement, we have learned the sifu has chosen to hold the qualifying round for this decade’s tournament here in Absalom. The Pathfinder Society has long sought to send one of its members to compete in this tournament. If our information is true, this means that for the first time, the Society has the opportunity to qualify a good number of its field agents. While the chance to glean an artifact from Hao Jin’s collection is enticing, that is hardly the entirety of our goal. However, I shall speak more on this subject at a later time”
”At present, we have learned that Xho Nuo plans to host a covert meeting to address all would-be contestants. Don’t get too excited though; it’s supposedly being held at a decrepit tavern in the Docks called the Devil’s Dregs. Go there and see what details you can pick up about the competition and the other entrants, but watch your backs. There’s little law to protect you down on the wharves, and it’d take a riot to raise any attention. Oh, and I wouldn’t expect an appearance from Xho Nuo either, as his social status prevents him from contact with such filthy and common places. My guess is that he’ll send one of his agents to rile up as many lowlifes as possible to serve as fodder for the first round of the contest”
”Lastly, though its likely Xho Nuo is aware of our interest in the competition, we need all our agents to maintain as much secrecy as possible. For all we know, he has deliberately chosen Absalom to bait our interests, so it’s imperative that he identify as few of our agents as possible. From here out, to keep our affiliations covert, we request all of you make arrangements for your stay outside the Grand Lodge. Try to pick a place that’s low key to avoid attention. Don’t worry about the cost though. The Decemvirate will pick up the tab. Good luck.”
Welcome to the Multi-Table special – Blood under Absalom, we are now underway!
nightdeath |
If you wish to do anything else prior to exiting, please note in your post. I'll work it in. Let's have a good game!
In a quiet, rundown section of the Docks, the party spots a weathered wooden sign hanging above a wide alcove that reads “Devil’s Dregs.” A pair of thick double doors within the alcove lead into the tavern.
Entering the Tavern
Despite its sizable taproom, the Devil’s Dregs seems filled to capacity. The smells of cheap ale, unwashed bodies, and thick pipe smoke mix in the crowded room, as tightly squeezed contestants push and shove their way about the tavern. As one might expect in the Docks district, the tavern extends over the harbor, and beneath the floor lies the silty, brackish water of Absalom’s wide bay. The dim light of the tavern’s few lanterns exposes few specifics about the patrons or the surroundings.
You also noticed aside from the front doors from the shore, a set of double doors leads out of the tavern onto rickety piers in the center of both the east and west walls, and a number of windows look out over the harbor to the south.
There various people of different races, build and perhaps aspirations in here.
Celstri Fredricks |
Upon meeting his group, the tall elf, dressed in modest travelling garb eyes everyone before speaking. He seems to stare at everyone with eyes that have seen too few hours sleep, and has a slightly disheveled ponytail that reaches the small of his back that reeks of flyleaf and coffee. Book hanging by a small chain at his side, and a single wand on his belt it appears he is suited for the arcane. "By the orders of her Mistress, I am forced to leave the archives every so often, which further delays my research, as to which I am displeased. I am Celstri Fredricks, a librarian and researcher of the divine. I am interested not as to what you do, but rather who you are, as there are quite a many character on this island, and a few I wish to keep my distance."
--------------
Fumbling about the streets while on his way towards the rendezvous, the tall elf tries to keep his wide brimmed hat on his head. As he stops and looks at the building, he pats his robes down, and makes sure that his Wayfinder is neatly hidden away, before looking at his notes pertaining to the "Devil's Dregs" and its location. Quickly activating his wand of Mage Armor, the librarian cranks the spring mechanism to its original position, placing the wand back into its slot as he steps into the tavern.
"If it weren't for that damned sylph, I'd be back home rather than this, ugh, filthy place," he mutters, squeezing past the tightly packed crowd, towards the bar. "Barkeep . I say, barkeep! How much is your house port, if you have any? If you don't, two shots of Oldlaw and a pint of ale would suffice."
nightdeath |
The Barkeep seems like the surly sort but gives you a fairprice for drinks, accepting payment before sliding over the drinks.......
Laiashi |
Laiashi is dressed in simple but form-fitting traveling garb, mostly worn leather and cotton. Underneath is her chain shirt armor, cut low to accentuate her features while still able to stop a knife. Her hair is stark orange, her shoulders bare. No weapons of any kind are visible, only a small pouch at her waist for adventuring gear.
The Devil's Dregs... I had hoped becoming a Pathfinder would get me out of Absalom. She'd grown up in the Puddles, and while the Devil's Dregs was nowhere near her shelter house, she had gone there once or twice to steal from its patrons. Well, I guess I'd better change clothes. As they make their way to the tavern, she snaps her fingers. Her clothes shift and shimmer, and in a few seconds she is instead dressed as a ship wench-- lacy but extremely revealing top (unable to hide her armor, which somewhat detracts from the look, but she'd rather not risk removing it), leather pants, and long boots. Sometimes, attracting attention is the best way to blend in.
She walks into the tavern and inhales. Smells like childhood. She sidles up to one of the men who looks to be by himself. "You look much too lonely to be in a place like this."
If anyone wants to be the person she comes up to, feel free to play it out. But it doesn't have to be a party member.
Azadeh Talat |
Her long, black hair tamed by a green scarf embroidered with gold ornaments, Azadeh enters the Devil's Dregs, looking for a free place in the already crowded tavern. Before, she had already taken off her earrings and her necklace, and her caftan dress, while elegant and comfortable, seems simple enough with its different hues of earthen brown so as not to make her the first target for any greedy pickpockets.
Finally reaching the bar, she comes to stand besides a tired-looking man who just ordered his beverage from the barkeep. Before the barkeep can turn away, she quickly adds her own order.
"And, please, a glass of wine for me, while you're at it."
Barl Kestad |
The blond dwarf forces his way through the crowd, trying to find a spot to observe. There are too damn many longshanks everywhere!
Arikena |
The large half-orc woman, wearing clothes as rugged as she is pushes her way through the crowd to a table,
"Eh, eh dwarf, you want a seat?"
Celstri Fredricks |
Turning his head to the side, the tired elf looks at keleshite woman before nodding slightly, "So, a drink for the weary I take it?" Turning slightly, and looking about the crowd, his eyes widen slightly as he spots other newcomers, sighing heavily. "At least the people watching is interesting, correct miss keleshite?"
Barl Kestad |
Barl looks up at the half-orc woman. "Since you are offering, I thank you." He climbs up on the chair, trying to see over the crowd. "What brings you to this contest?" he asks his new companion casually.
nightdeath |
You might want to size up the competition around in here with Perception Checks
The barkeep seemingly with practice borne out of experience, serves each and everyone of you with your drinks of choice while pocketing the coins and still give out change as possible though it is noticed that most don't really care about it. The place is crowded.
Azadeh Talat |
"More curious than weary at the moment." Azadeh smiles gently. "This is really an interesting crowd, all those different people, a sight you might only see here in Absalom or at the markets of Katapesh."
She raises her glass to the elf. "Name's Azadeh Talat, by the way. And talking about curiosity, would you give me the honor of your name, Master Elf?"
Through all this casual communication, she looks over the crowd to drink the impressions in without trying to stare too long at single tavern guests.
Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 1
Celstri Fredricks |
Taking a sip of his drink, he wearily smiles. "Celstri Fredricks, Miss Talat, is the name I have been given since moving to the island of Kortos. I've never been to Katapesh, but have heard the markets are second to none." Eyes, darting in between all patrons, sizing what could be potential competition, yet the distraction of the ifrit woman keeps him from focusing on the others.
Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5
Azadeh Talat |
"I'm inclined to agree, Master Fredricks, though as far as size goes, the markets of Aroden's city might rival even the wonders you'll find there. There are way more horses, though, so I felt a bit more at home there."
Azadeh soots an inquiring look at the elf and recognizes him repeatedly looking at the red-haired bombshell.
"That beautiful fire flower over there really doesn't seem to care about the attention she gets, right? But, and please forgive if I'm intruding on your privacy, you look very tired, exhausted even. Are you not well? Because, I guess, that you're also here because of the competition and that might get hard enough to succeed for anyone in full health?"

***OVERSEER ANNOUCEMENT***
Without warning, a flash of smoke flares up from the center of the tavern floor. As it clears, a towering, golden-skinned humanoid of hideous and terrifying countenance steps forth, ebon teeth gleaming fiendishly. Standing before the crowd, she greets them with a slow and gracious bow, yet her eyes never look away.
The creature gestures to call the crowd’s attention, and one by one they fall silent.
“Good evening and allow me to introduce myself, I am called Kiang Zhen. My sifu, Xho Nuo, the Emissary of the Ruby Phoenix, wishes for me to tell all of you that he is most pleased to see so many of you eager to attend the tournament. It is his desire that everyone please find a table and make yourselves comfortable at his expense.”
The room becomes increasingly packed as contestants file in, and barely a minute later arriving contestants quickly fill all remaining tables leaving the tavern with standing room only – yet more and more continue to fill the place out – it is tightly packed and it is a struggle to both keep a hold of your own food and drink as well as dodging the spilled food and drink of others.
A short time later…
”Again, your attention please. I regret to inform all of you that Sifu Xho Nuo will not be present this evening, though he has appointed me to speak on his behalf.”
”To speak with candor, there are many who wish the Sifu dead and wish to steal from him the ancient secrets he was appointed to guard. This comes as no surprise to the Emissary, for he has been charged with the protection of a great and terrible power. Even now, in this very room, some of these same individuals sit amongst us. To them I say, Sifu knows who you are and fears you not. He even entreats you to join the Ruby Phoenix Tournament, for he shall not compromise the primary intention of the contest – to find the world’s greatest martial artist. Rest assured, this tournament shall test the mettle of its contestants, regardless of their intentions. Competition shall be fierce and violent without regard for contestants lives. That is your concern – not mine, not the Emissary’s. Those who fail might be lucky enough to walk away with their lives. For this reason, there are few places where our tournament is truly welcome. Thus, given the nature of the tournament and other circumstances, the Emissary has expressed to me the need to retain secrecy. However, I assure you he shall make an appearance before the end of the qualifying round.”
”Lastly, I have noticed many of you have come as teams. This is good, for initially, you may need help from allies you trust.” The beast pauses for a moment, letting his dark, pupil-less gaze hover upon the crowd. From his belt he unfastens a leather satchel and holds it aloft before the crowd. “I have here 100 rubies. On the morrow, fifty of these rubies will begin to glow, and those individuals or groups in possession of one such gem shall be contacted by one of our agents, who will give them the details of where the first event of the qualifier will take place.” then with a wide and wild grin he says “And so it begins!”
On his final words, he tosses the bag into the air, sending the rubies scattering everywhere. The next moment, he vanishes, leaving behind only a vaporous wisp.
Azadeh Talat |
"Well, Master Fredricks, can I trust you?"
Instinctively, Azadeh raises a hand, fixating one of the rubies flying through the air, and trying to force it to change direction and fly in her hand.
@nightdeath: I'm not sure if you'll allow it, but I'd like to use my geokinesis on one of the rubies. If there's something speaking against it, feel free to ignore my post :) and just in case I would have to roll for initiative:
Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Laiashi |
Perception vs other patrons: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Lai catches the eye of the elf at the bar. Wouldn't have thought he'd be the type, she thinks to herself, noting his spellbook and tired look. Different strokes, I guess. She starts to make her way over to him, but is interrupted by the bombastic appearance of Kiang Zhen. When he tosses his bag of rubies into the air, she does her best to snatch one before they're all gone.
Not sure how you want us to play this, but Lai will try to palm one without anyone noticing.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
If she can grab one (with or without being seen)...
She moves next to Celstri, gathering nearby empty glasses like a tavern wench. "You're here for that tournament thing, right? Don't look much like a sailor, begging your pardon." She glances pointedly at the elf's spellbook. "Well you're in good company. Most of these others are too, the place has never been so packed."
Arikena |
Arikena smiles at the dwarf,
"Oh you know, fame and fortune and all that."
When the rubies are tossed into the air she catches the dwarf's ey

Laiashi fails to get one but the duo attracts the attention of a group of Gorumite Clerics who are quick as well to notice the ruby in Azadeh's hand and whips out their greatswords, advancing.......
Barl Kestad |
Barl checks out the other contestants.

"Mine! If you all want to keep your arms that is..."

Celstri Fredricks |
Eyes looking at the bag with flying rubies, Celstri reaches out to catch one of the gems before a sense of danger pecked at the back of his brain. Fingers opening wide, and a slight flick of his wrist, a wand appears. With his other hand, he takes off his hat and attempts to catch a ruby in it!

Barl manages to notice several members of the Aspis Consortium, Red Mantis agents, and several other obvious rivals, as well as some foreigners never before seen. Among the foreigners stands a unshaven swordsman in ornate lamellar armor and a full helm bearing the visage of a snarling demon
Arikena scowls at the approaching clerics and shakes them but the others don't seem to have any success in finding any more rubies.

Ah, alrighty then! Mind if I change one of my actions then? I'll be using my wand of magic missile instead of attempting to catch the Ruby, aimed at the top orc.
Attacking the Darkness!: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Azadeh Talat |
"Master Fredricks, I've got one, time to leave! You too, Fire Lady!"
I'm assuming Laiashi moved to Celstri before the combat started and overheard what she said to the elf?
Azadeh moves backwards to reach the doors behind her, but stops, when she sees that Celstri decided to fight. Palming the ruby with her one hand, she raises the other and draws a simple sigil in the air, that seems to concentrate into the form of a rock. Another throwing gesture, and that air rock flies through the gap between the elf and the half-orc woman onto the second of those greatsword wielders.

Laishi attempts to lose herself amongst the crowd and finds that a little hard going due to the fact that the crowd are all into this little brawl.
Barl introduces one of the clerics to his Warhammer and said warhammer has a serious discussion on the merits of forged metal to face. Unfortunately the cleric has no response on it being knocked out from the first exchange.
Celstri whips out a wand and sends forth a damaging magic bolt!! This gets her attention unfortunately.
Azadeh decides to rock the house but fails to get anyone's stones up.
Celstri gets a close up look at the sight of a greatsword coming down at her from an overhead chop.
Greatsword to Celstri 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 1 - 1 = 202d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2) + 5 = 10
The resulting clash means, she needs healing from that gash that neraly spilit her in two.
Arikena gets accosted by one that though is shaken by her words, is matched by his determination to obtain a ruby for himself and his comrades.
Greatsword to Arikena 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 5 + 1 - 1 = 242d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 4) + 5 = 12
Greatsword to Arikena 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 5 + 1 - 1 = 142d6 + 5 ⇒ (6, 5) + 5 = 16
That slash catches the brave and fierce half orc on her shoulder, the force of it bringing down to her knees.
An angry and eagar cleric steps forward to resume discussion of warhammer to face. His answer?
Greatsword to Barl 1d20 + 5 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 1 - 1 = 152d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 5) + 5 = 13
A direct chop at the logic of getting ahead. This would have left a serious gash across the face of Barl....fortunately it missed.
Arikena |
Arikena snarls as rage overtakes her

Withdrawal action, so no AoO against the silly little elf!
Azadeh Talat |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Stupid Elf!
Azadeh frowns when Celstri decides to seek shelter in the corner instead of going through the door behind her. Herself, she takes a step back through the door, but having seen the wound, the elf just got by his opponent's attack, she hesitates to flee further but decides to hold the door open for anyone who would follow her.
"Celstri. We need to go. Now!"
And again, the air before her hands seems to densify before it flies again against the cleric that attacked the elf.
Move action: On step backwards through the door and another use of earth blast

At least I have something to help my orcish friend, but how to get to her?
The elf fumbles for a bit and makes his way towards Laiashi before grinning slightly. "I was hoping that this would be used later," he coughs as he begins an incantation. Colorful particles form in the air as light begins to emanate from the elf's fingertips. Finishing the spell, a cone of color shoots from his outstretched hand towards the area the cleric is in.

She turns back to the threatening clerics only just in time to realize one of them had closed to her. She dodges the massive blade right as the elf spouts forth a cascade of colored light. Making sure to stay out of its rays-- she knows such magic can have dire consequences-- she sidesteps after it fades to take advantage of Arekena's positioning (someone she doesn't know, but is apparently an enemy of her enemies which is good enough). She flicks her other wrist to produce a second dagger.
Dagger 1 (flanking): 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 + 2 = 17

Both blades are poisoned with Large Scorpion Venom. For each hit, the cleric needs to make a DC 17 Fort save or take 1d2 ⇒ 1 Str damage (if both hit, the second save takes a -2 penalty).
Azadeh Talat |
Too much wood and water around me.
Azadeh concentrates on the ruby she still clutches in her hand, as this is her most direct connection to her element she has in the moment. Now that she#s decided not to leave Celstri and Laiashi alone, she steps back into the tavern to get a better sight for the enemy.
Third time's the charm!
