Daniel, Henrik and Dura proceed ahead, and indeed throughout the majority of the ground floor of the Harrowstone prison. Proceeding through the hallway leading north, you inspect the doors to the right and find stairs leading down. The way, however, is completely blocked with fallen rubble that would take days and a particularly daring work crew to remove.

Daniel's ears perk up first, then you hear it - the sound of fighting - unmistakable to those who have invested a lifetime in its practice. Grunts, shouts, cries of pain, and chilling howls sound from beyond the rubble. They are very muffled, as if deep below and somewhat distant.

You could proceed north through a door at the end of the hall, or go back to the first room and take a door to the east or west. Sorry for the process, but there's a point - every round you don't find them is a round they have to fight the Lopper:)

I didn't know that, actually. OK, change of plan, then.

Zazaria steels herself once more to take the battle to the Lopper's hateful shade. Perhaps to give herself the appearance of confidence she scarcely feels, she fixes the Lopper with a wry grin. Oh you poor dear, she says, mockingly. You look a bit worse for wear. Perhaps THIS will help.

Hands once gain cradling that blue light, she steps up and slaps at the enraged Lopper - in much the same manner that a nurse in less enlightened times might slap an hysteric.

Spontaneous casting cure light wounds. On the Lopper.

"Could be. Better than standing around," Henrik says, hastening through the door.

I'd assumed that was going to happen. Makes sense to me!

Anyi takes another shot with one of the ghost touch arrows.

Additional damage from Rufus: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Now that the group is focused and knows how to hurt the Lopper, they prove to be quite effective. Rufus swings the axe with precision, and it cleaves into the creature's form. Zazaria's spell of healing wracks the wraith's form with pain, and it convulses just as two ghost touch arrows slam home into it. Enraged and sorely wounded, the Lopper cries out.

You'll burn! Burn like them all, once he gets to you! Your names will be written in blood!

Bleed damage to Z: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Again, the blood siphoned from his target seems to heal the Lopper.

Top of the round! Vrilli's up

Dura and Henrik enter into what looks to have been an infirmary, based upon the fact that there are moldy cots throughout the room.

There are various objects of healing strewn about the room, as it thrown about haphazardly. The lone exit from the room, aside from the door through which you came, is a door on the east side of the room.

Vrilli splashes out the liquid at the Lopper, but the insubstantial nature of the Lopper forces his perception to be slightly off. Instead of hitting the Lopper, the fluid flies past, just missing its blurred outline.

The Lopper hisses in anger, and deftly maneuvers back and out of reach.

Everyone's up! Note his location now

Daniel leads the way through the eastern door, and the trio pass through the room in the heavy silence left by the lack of a reply to Dura's query.

The door in the eastern wall opens to the north, but into a room to the east of the infirmary. A huge stone furnace dominates this next room, large enough for a child to climb inside. An ancient fire has burned away the entire east wall of the room, providing a panoramic, if eerie, view of the lake beyond. That same lake has gradually expanded into the room, flooding its eastern half.

A door in the southern wall is the only exit leading out of this room, save for the burned-away portion of wall, which leads outside.

The ax jerks back and up, then flies forward, dragging Rufus across the filthy cell tiles. He clutches it with both hands, his breath coming in fevered gasps as he struggles fruitlessly to control its razor edge.

"The accursed blade--it's possessed!"

Somehow, he finds himself skirting the edge of the pit and approaching the Lopper from the east.

Move counter-clockwise around pit to close on Lopper.

Henrik growls in frustration, heading to the southern door almost immediately. "The longer it takes us to find them..." he starts, not bothering to finish his statement. He takes only a moment to brace himself before flinging the door open, hopefully revealing a pathway to his future companions, or less hopefully, what is left of them.

Rufus additional damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Lopper will save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

The Lopper hisses in pain once again, as his very own axe from his previous life slashes through him, ripping through bone and skin that wasn't actually there. The reaction, though, is very real, and the Lopper emits a keening moan, even as Leeoli's arrow takes it in the torso.

Though the Lopper is able to resist some of Zazaria's faith-bound power, the force of the goddess's word wracks the serial killer's insubstantial form with power, and he hisses in anger, though with more than a little fear.

Anyi looks longingly at Leeoli's last arrow, then shrugs. Do we have anything else I can use to hurt this thing?

Vrilli's up before the Lopper. So you know, you've done a tremendous amount of damage to him so far. He has Zazaria, Rufus, and Anyi bleeding now.

Henrik bursts through the door to the south and enters into a large room. The northeast wall of this room has partially fallen, revealing the dark, murky waters of the pond outside. Moldering training dummies and other similar equipment hint that this room may have once been a training area for the guards. In the northeast part of the room, the floor around a dark, jagged holes is surrounded by black scorch marks.

There are ropes leading into the hole, hastily tied off as if someone were plunging into the hole below. The noise of battle can be heard from the pit, which shows only a soggy floor some twenty feet below.

Henrik rushes forward with much less care than his companion, jumping into the hole and sticking one of his ephemeral claws into the wall to slow his descent. "No time to wait!" he shouts up at Dura, looking around for the direction of combat once he reaches the bottom.

I'm using Wall Stunt to drop down the shaft, halving my movement speed but allowing me to traverse walls for a round. It's the safest way to get down for me, and without any checks involved. Much farther, though, and it might be a different story.

Human Cleric Ecclesitheurge 5

Zazaria droops momentarily...the well of Pharasmin energy has, indeed, run dry. But I have other powers yet. No more Channeling Energy today, team.

Leeoli! she yelps. Your blade! I can bless it!

Hoping to use Touch the Spirit World. It will allow Leeoli's blade to affect incorporeal creatures, 1 round only.

It's a DC10 climb check to get down using the rope, though not sure how Daniel would get down. Without the rope, it's a DC30 climb check to navigate the ceiling and the overhang of the pit, then subsequent DC10 checks to climb down along the sloped wall.

Vrilli growls in frustration, and moves around Anyi, unstoppering a flask of holy water as he does. Once close, he turns the bottle over and attempts to douse the figure.

Ranged attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

The holy water coats the Lopper, and tears at his "skin" in obvious pain. His body curls back unnaturally, as if no spine existed within his emaciated skeleton. With a shrill shriek of agony, the incorporeal form of the Lopper falls to the ground, only to be quickly stabbed and put to rest by Leeoli.

Well done! 300 XP added in campaign thread. The Lopper appears to be lain back to rest, if his form is any indication. There is still a large amount of collected spoils at the bottom of the pit - no doubt what the murderer had collected from guards he killed in whatever madness occurred with the fire.

Dura and Henrik drop down into a deep cavernous chamber, just as a loud shriek can be heard resonating throughout the lower floor. This chamber may have once been an underground cell block, but it has long since collapsed. The crumbled walls are thick with mold and stained with soot, and heaps of fallen stones and charred wooden beams line the area. Water drips and seeps along the walls, collecting in a dark, murky pool in the middle of the room. To the north, the twisted remains of a wood and iron lift lie in a heap in a shallow portion of the pool. To the west, a partially blocked opening seems to open up after several feet into a dark but stable tunnel. Its from this direction that the shriek had come.

Leeoli heaves a sigh of relief. Sheathing his rapier, he picks up his abandoned bow. The damp air of the dungeon cools his neck, and his hand moves there semi-consciously. The hairs on his bare skin remain erect, despite the Lopper's passing. Leeoli turns to Rufus, who seemed to be holding the cursed axe, raised, as if...
Rufus. You can put down the axe.

Daniel growls down to check on Dura. "Just watch out backs and call out if anyone comes, okay." Clearly disappointed, he lies down with his head on his paws.
Shaking her head sadly, Dura moves forward to the west, announcing their presence, just in case. "Hello. Please don't shoot us or anything. We're on your side."

"Bravo, Leeoli!" Rufus reaches to grasp his friend on the shoulder, then realizes he's clutching the Lopper's ax with that very hand. He releases it quickly, like a hot pan from the fire, frowning with distaste as it clatters noisily to the dirty ground. "Damnable thing." He adjusts his surcoat, holding his hand over the area where the Lopper's ghost seemed to touch him through the fabric. His lobstered gauntlet connects solidly, indicating the presence of some kind of plate strapped beneath his coat.

"Hmm well struck, indeed," he adds absently, not clarifying whether he means Leeoli or the Lopper.

Reclaiming his own weapons, he peers over the edge of the pit and down toward the ghost's lair.

Any method to climb down?

Leeoli leans down, and with a bit of rag, picks up the cursed axe. This is not something we should leave around, I think.

Peering down into the darkness of the pit nearbye, Leeoli spies what appears to be abandoned gear. Probably worth going down. There may be valuable items below, and I hve little of value left on me otherwise... if they could get down to it.

Careful to keep his mind blank, Leeoli calls back from deep in the shadow Name your names, perhaps you are friends, and perhaps you are not.

Leeoli waits. The silence deadening, Leeoli hold his breath to maintain it. ah hell, a trick. Leeoli pulls out a small vial of shielding extract, and puts it against his lip.
Out of the darkness floats two familiar names Dura...Henrik
Leeoli pauses in memory.
oh... So they came after all! Leeoli knew more letters had been sent. The professor had many close friends--surprising really given his reclusive tendencies--and the professor had cast a wide net to find help for Ravengro and his daughter.

Leeoli had met each more than once, although he never spent more than an evening or three with each. Still, now that he had their names, the voices matched their memory. Dura, Dura Fletcher.. Imposingly tall, flame for hair. An Oracle of some sort, he seemed to recall...And a Lycanthrope... Henrik, he barely remembers...A 'meditant', he had said...I never knew what he had meant by that but still Leeoli remembers that the Lorimor was fond of the man.

This is Leeoli of the Maleye. Well met!

Rufus watches Leeoli closely as his friend gathers up the ax, wondering what impulses pass through the man as he, too, grips the haunted blade. When the weapon is stowed, he exhales audibly.

He crawls to his feet from the edge of the pit, peering after Leeoli down the passage. He had not expected more acquaintances of the professor, though he can't deny the relief that consumes him, given the current circumstances.

If he is being honest with himself, he is also glad to know he isn't the only friend of the professor's to be called upon after the reading of the will. It makes him feel a little less...estranged.

He knows he must be a frightening figure, draped in dark clothing and hauling heavy sword, though at least his essence has worn off by now and the whites of his eyes surely have returned to normal. If not, he hopes the shadows will help conceal their bloodshot appearance.

"Hello," he offers simply, cautiously, as his voice floats ahead of him down the haunted halls.

Dura enters cautiously. "Well met, indeed. Is everything... quiet at the moment?" She looks around the room. "We tried to help out with some of the townsfolk. There seems to be some sort of entity possessing people. We believe it's coming from the prison."

Though Rufus is able to part with the axe, doing so seems to take quite a bit out of him, and his body is wracked with spasms.

Will save please

The group examines the area, and finds that, aside from the rope with a premature ending point, there is no good way down. They could tie a new rope to the grates, or pull up the other rope and extend it with more rope of their own, if they so choose.

Henrik and Dura emerge into a room with a collapsed stairwell in the middle - no doubt the other side of the collapsed stair from above. All about the base are skeletal figures, many of them appearing to be damaged after they became skeletal - perhaps recently. To the north, torchlight flickers from a room with cellblocks, and quite a few living people within, standing over a large pit.

Dura enters, and five pairs of eyes watch her with caution...they obviously had just seen action, if apparent from the unnaturally bleeding wounds and the heaving breaths they still take.
