"Spellcasters not loyal to the Ragesian empire?" the elf said incredulously. "Is that a crime? We are not in the Ragesian empire."

"No, you're not. But the Empire is coming," a well timed whump followed by roars and screeching causes him to reconsider, "well, it's here, and Leska's Inquisitors are on the hunt and offering good money. Renard is a greedy man and won't stop to weed out those who are good and those who are not."

He shifts uncomfortably.

"At 100 gold a head, you'd best watch who you trust, even though you wield powerful magics."

"...and you thought you would just take the money of an invading army who is bent on capturing or killing people simply for knowing magic?" Ash shook his head and gave the bounty hunter a scornfully judgmental look. "Your employer does not sound like a good person. You may want to rethink which side of this situation you want to be on."

Ash started moving down the stairs to regroup with everyone else.

"WE SHOULD BE GOING PEOPLE. THIS PLACE ISN'T SAFE" she shouted!

She contemplated saying more, about how they should leave the city, but with so many others running around she didn't want to tip their hand. Who knows what they had already overheard. Besides, she didn't really know many of these others and while she trusted those that sent her here, she still didn't know these people. The fact that they were willing to save those that had attacked them spoke volumes, and she trusted her gut, but it was still too soon to make judgments about them. That would come with time.

She continued to guard what was left of the front door, ensuring that no new threats encroached on their temporary shelter.

Kathor, you can help repay the debt of your men’s lives by buying us some time. Sobrian nods towards the charred body propped against a wall. My apologies if that one was one of yours. Take the corpse to Renard and tell him it is Torrent’s. It won’t fool him or who he is working for for long I am sure but might give us time for what we must do. I think you have too much honor to be a mercenary. Tonight you can be a hero for a time and maybe save our lives.

Coughs politely, then says " Well my friends, I dare say we best be moving on. Ladies, I would not mind if ya'll would be so kind to stay in the middle of us. I fear I may be unable to reach my shop in time, and so we must depart. You said it was that way?" He then starts to shoo and move everyone towards their goal.

Kathor sighs, "I will do my best for you, I don't know how much time I can buy, but hopefully it will be enough." Hew collects the body of the charred mercenary.

"Thank you again" he moves off, with his remaining forces.

The chaos in the sky and thoughout the city makes travel tough. Screaming civilians and falling wyverns and griffons create difficulties along the way.

A heavily burnt man carrying an limp woman calls to Rose for help "Please! I've seen you - you're one of those healers - please you need to help my wife."

A crying child runs up to the woman and starts pulling on her hand, "Mummy, mummy wake up!"

Blanching at being spotted and recognized, Sarrissa couldn't help but nodding before she grasped her holy symbol. With the little girl present, she decided against using her sight of life to determine the unconscious woman's status. Doing so might remove what hope she had left in her own heart for the woman, and she hadn't yet had the training that she needed, that which would allow her to recognize and know how to treat injuries. So she resorted to what she did know.

Holding the holy symbol aloft, she closed her eyes and whispered a quick prayer. The positive energy flowed into her and filled her with indescribable joy. With the sounds of battle and misery all around her, it was hard not to smile. She gritted her teeth and with a deep breath, released the pent up energy building up inside her. It flooded the streets around her, closing minor scraps and bruises of everyone around her. She hesitated a look at the unconscious mother to see if had had any effect and silently prayed that it had.

The ladies eyes flicker open and some of the mans burns begins to soften. The man lowers the woman to her feet, "Oh Sarah, thank the heavens"

The man sobs, "Thank you, thank you so much, its not a lot, but here take this." He reaches into his coat and produces a small medallion depicting a rearing griffon, gesturing for Rose to take it.

Kiana aids the griffins wherever possible, firing off an arrow from cover at the wyverns, always a block from the main group, using her flight to keep up with them, but flying below building top to avoid the wyverns.

She stops along the way to gather more arrows from downed griffin riders or downed soldiers, whenever the need arises. She also tries to scout ahead for the group to make sure they are not headed into an ambush.

As she talks, Rose takes a moment to slip the small medallion into a belt pouch.

"Nothing changes. We make for the depository. The Ragesian army is still marching towards us, and it would seem their aerial scouts are here now. We still have to meet this gnome and then get out of the city. Might even be a little easier in this chaos."

"Sobrian, Barrack, Beauregarde, why don't you three take point. I'll bring up the rear. Ash, stay in between us, next to Torrent. I'm sure Kiana will help keep us covered, as long as she doesn't run out of arrows."

There are enough arrows flying that you don't need to worry about tracking at the moment Kiana

The streets are sometimes filled with people fleeing or empty as people take shelter, constantly shifting between full and empty depending on whether fire is present or not.

As you pass through the streets, a cluster of four storey buildings up ahead is hit by one of the Ragesian bombs. One of the windows bursts open with a woman screaming for help "Please someone! The hallway is on fire! Someone Save me!"

People in the area begin running away panicking.

Kiana rolls her eyes as the dwarf and the human rush into the burning building. "Ground bound idiots." However, she does swoop over to the window. "Children first, woman. If there are no children, then give me your hands and I'll take you to the ground." She keeps her bow out, but leaves her talons next to the window as she hovers, in easy grasp reach.

As Ash and Beauregarde rush into the building they find that the first two floors are yet untouched by the flames, but heat emanates from the upper stories.

The woman reaches out to Kiana's talons with her right arm, her left arm clutching a chubby cat. "It's only me and Whiskers in here!"

Ash ran up the stairs.

I have Fire Resist 5, so I think I'll be fine in the flames. If Kiana is able to save the woman and her cat, I'll grab anything that looks like a family heirloom, valuables, or clothing for her.

Kiana will be able to carry the woman and Whiskers to safety.

Upstairs, Ash leaps through the flames, unaffected by their heat, into the womans apartment.

Take the cat and get to safety, come back for your clothes." She instructs, and then draws her bow and takes wing and returns to scouting.

Rose waited anxiously just outside the door of the burning house. Her glaive held in one hand, the butt resting on the street, two words echoed over and over in head. Come on...come on...

As the rescued woman touched down on the street with the cat, Rose breathed a sigh of relief. Thank the gods. She made a mental note to thank Kiana later, once they had a moment to rest. Still, if Ash didn't make it out soon she'd have to risk going in after him, and rushing into a burning building was not her idea of a wise move. Brave though, but probably not wise.

She startled as the dresser smashed into the street and turned quickly raising her glaive with both hands in the process. She visibly relaxed when she saw that it wasn't on fire and they were not being attacked and turned her attention back to the door way, trying to see if she could spot Ash coming.

As the group had been moving through the city Barrack had taken the time to evaluate his allies and their actions. In the end he found himself worried by their lack of pragmatism. Sometimes you had to make sacrifices for the greater good. While he was impressed by their abilities and understood their desire to protect their home he also knew that sometimes you had to make the difficult choice of accepting you can't save everyone. For the most part the dwarf simply stayed in the background and watched for more direct threats. But seeing the elven magician run into a blazing fire to save a wardrobe that would most likely get looted tonight drove him to speak.

The invasion is here and we need to make a choice. Do we stay here playing hero trying to save people's clothing from fires or do we get on with this mission? Because every time we stop for these heroics we make it less likely that we'll be able to save the whole city. I commend your respect for life... But with us leaving the city, we have to accept that allot of people will die tonight, and we have a bigger task at hand. So for the love of your home I ask that we try to keep a lower profile before we really do draw the attention of something we can't handle. If we really do manage to piss off one of those wyverns we'll most likely all die and everything we are trying to accomplish will fail.

Having finished his little tirade the dwarf looks at his fellow travellers to see if any of the direness of the situation has sunk in.

Kiana shrugs. "Of course, we can all act without honor, and flee in safety. We only have to act like craven hum... like cowards. However, I can certainly remember your words for the future, dwarf, and remember to leave you behind if it becomes expedient. For myself, for now, I prefer to act with honor and dignity, rather than become that which hunts us, something without honor. Even if the creatures I save are lowly dishonorable things, their lack of honor or worth has nothing to do with my own honor." She then returns to scouting ahead, trying to point to streets with easier paths for the group to follow.

"I was here, didn't know if Kiana would need help, so I went." Ash shrugged, handing the woman the things he had grabbed from her home. He dusted off his nice clothes, tisking over the light singing of his stylish cape. "You make a good point though, dwarf. It is time to leave."

Coughing some of the smoke out, as he was unable to assist much, he wipes a handkerchief across his hands before stating " I think he has a point however. One may die over their honor, if their honor is on the line. If we die before our mission is complete, then we are nothing better than those low good for nothing Wyvens. We have not been handed the glove of challenge, so we shall flee, together, and help while we can." He makes his way with the group towards their goal, prodding them a bit faster, as faster as a dwarf can move.

"I will not turn a blind eye towards the plight of those we encounter. If I can help, I will...but I will not delay one second longer than I must. A favor now may be returned to us when needed. We can debate it at a later time. For now, you are right. We must make haste. Let's catch up to Sobrian."

Rose's lips were a firm line of determination. She waited for the rest of them to proceed and fell in line at the rear, keeping her eyes moving. She glanced up to see if she could spot Kiana, but assumed she knew what she was doing and how to stay out of immediate danger in the skies. Again, she silently thanked her for saving the woman.

Ash, the most valuable things in the apartment are the set of china and an ivory cat statue. It takes a little effort to move the chest of drawers to the window and upon hitting the ground it shatters, spilling its contents in a pile of wood and clothing.

The woman runs off with her cat before Ash returns from her apartment. She seems both terrified of Kiana and grateful, stammering "Th- th- thank you" before she leaves

"The world won't end because we stopped to help," Torrent begins, "Kiana and Ash, you really have shown that you are exactly what this place needs.

"I agree haste is of the utmost importance, but remember that the Resistance is for the people."

As you continue moving through the streets, a louder, powerful roar fills the night sky. Before you, people begin to panic and scream, running in all directions as fear grips them.

Flying slightly above, Kiana makes out a huge crimson bat winged creature the size of a house swooping about 600ft ahead. The chaos of the night and the distance make it nigh impossible to determine exactly what the creature is.

As you continue forward, you find people trampled as they fell amidst the panicked crowds.

You eventually reach the Depository, an eighty foot high tower located in the center of its district, and is surrounded by a fenced compound that is guarded day and night.

Torrent freezes up as she sees it. The guards at the gate lie dead.

"We must approach with caution, I hope nothing has happened to Reivereye"

She moves towards the two dead guards lying at the gate, checking their bodies. She takes 10 on a heal check They were killed by slim blades and with precision. Not the work of common thugs or rioters.

She holds up a set of keys, "Let's take a look inside." She tosses the keys to Sobrian, "You know how to sneak around, right?"

Kiana stops to take an extra three quivers of arrows, and carefully arranges them, with the flaps covering the arrows so they don't fall out. Her own quiver is designed to hold the arrows in even when she flies, but that is unlikely with the guard's quivers.

The Depository has only a single entrance on the ground floor and very faintly glows with a greenish hue. You didn't specify who found the body first, but I'd guess since she's on top with the ladder pulled up, it was Kiana... Were there arrows in the roof around her as if she was shot from above, in the sides of the tower as if shot from the sides, or around the doorway as if shot from above? Did the arrows in her slope down toward her feet,
or up toward her head, or go in at right angles?

Kiana shakes her head, and gathers the personal belongings of the woman. Once they are in her pack, except for the amulet, which she wraps around her wrist, she lands back at the front gate near the group.

"Only one person in the tower, a dead woman who was a spellcaster. Here's her spell book, and she was wearing this." She holds the amulet out to Torrent.

Ash came out with the intention of giving the woman her plates and cat statue. Seeing she was gone, he knew that leaving it with her clothing would just be giving it to looters, so he passed it off to Kianna as she opened her back. He didn't like the idea of taking it, but at this point there wasn't much other choice.

As Kianna came down with her bag even more full, Ash's eyes gleamed with arcane sight. "A spellcaster? Show me."

Sorry Kiana, the only way you could see that was because you were flying up. You would have been the one to find her. The arrows have entered at between a 15 and 60 degree angle, indicating that the shots came from below.

Ash, you identify the wand as a Wand of Magic Missile, Caster Level 3 with 12 charges remaining. The amulet appears to have a faint lingering aura of magic, which you identify as that of an Arcane Bond losing its magic.

Torrent regards the amulet, "It doesn't appear to have any real significance. Maybe someone at Gabal's College may know?"

This required coordination and advanced warning. Ergo, within minutes of your setting the meeting in motion, someone else was setting the ambush in motion. We need to leave, and we need to not make contact with the rest of your organization until we are free and clear."

"We need to check, the information that Rivereye claimed he had was worth the risk. You need to believe me"

Kneeling down to look at the bodies of the guards, Rose grimaced. They were not killed by wyverns or fire or arrows. They were killed, up close with blades. She grabbed the nearest longsword and longbow as she stood up, slinging the bow over her shoulder. She continued to pick up the gear laying about as she spoke.

"Kiana is right. You...we, have been betrayed. We will check for Rivereye and hope we can still find his information."

Sobrian snatches the keys out of the air as they come at him. I have never had so much riding on being stealthy, but I will give it my best shot. His flashes a confident smile at Torrent and then turns to Kiana as she discusses tactics with the others. You have a skill we should certainly use, Kiana. See what you can do about another way in if you like. For the sake of haste, I will sneak in as best I can through the ground entrance while you do your thing. He winks at Kiana and turns to approach the building.

He stays to whatever shadows he can on the approach and if uninterrupted he will do a cursory inspection of the door. If all is apparently well he will use the keys to quietly open the door and peek inside.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19 to inspect the door before opening.

They use the rope ladder to climb to the top for a sentry. The building itself is fairly high security, no windows, no extra doors.

As Sobrian creeps over to the door, he notices that the lock has scratch marks consistent with someone trying to pick the lock.

The door opens silently, as though recently oiled and beyond there is a circular corridor in which are signs of battle, some light sprays of blood against walls and scraps of cloth lie on the ground.

Following the corridor to the left leads to a dead end with a door on the right, following it to the right leads to the corridor becoming a stairwell leading up.

Perception DC 20:

There are sounds of light footsteps coming from the level above.

Ash leaned against the outside of the doorframe while Sobrian entered. He said nothing, trusting that they'd be waved forward when the scouting was done.
