That's true. The something bad happens if you miss by 5 or more doesn't apply to checks made to open locks.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Apologies for the last minute... But what I thought was a weekend away next weekend is apparently 7 days sooner than I'd expected.
I'll be back Monday at the latest.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
No problem. Real life comes first.
Telka Beast-Talker |
It's a holiday week (essentially) in the U.S., so I imagine a fair number of people are wrapped up in holiday-related activities in this part of the world.
Telka Beast-Talker |
Telka would just as well let the women go (albeit stripped of their valuable gear). She's not one for prisoner taking.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Just as a head's up, I'll be out of town and travelling in a "not getting online to check on games" sort of way for about a week, December 12-20.
I know, I know, it's a week away -- just trying to give a little advanced notice. ;)
I'll post another reminder before I go (if only to make clear when 'tyieli's mind can be switched to auto-pilot mode for a while...)
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
It's time to automate -- I'll see everyone in 9 days.
[And apparently, I posted my guidance just in time for the power failures at Paizo to eat my post - but good guess on my action. ;) ]

Hi,
After sales of items and purchase of a wand of cure light wounds we have:
4242.5 gp.
I think the lion's share should go to Hrarlyk and Jordan as they're behind the rest of the party in the purchasing department.
I sold most of the 15(!) tanglefoot bags but left 5 to split up among party members, if anyone wants them. I'll take 2 (so three left)
Does anyone want the composite shortbow? Telka will take it if nobody else want's it, but it might suit Ramenhotep or Hralyk.
Ramenhotep the Risen |
Go ahead and take the shortbow.
I can't think of anything that Ramen needs specifically except maybe an upgrade in armor if we have anything left over. I would suggest we should stock up on the basic consumables though:
I'd also suggest we take a few days so Jordan can build up his scroll library. Very useful for a wizard to have lots of utility and backup scrolls. Scrolls are not quite as useful for a magus though. Scrolls of magic weapon would be nice until we get some actual magic weapons, just in case something has DR/magic. Ramen doesn't need it (thanks to arcane pool enhancement) but the others will.
Telka Beast-Talker |
Oh, filther fever. Right.
Day 1:
fort: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Day 2:
fort: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Good enough. I will still be down some con. Can Zeltyieli get me with some of his new-found 2nd level spell awesomeness? (i.e. lesser restore). Assuming I heal at 1 per day with normal rest, I could still use a lesser for 2 con and 1 str.

Level 2 spells = web + Monster Summoning 2
Feat = Augment Summoning
I need to get a headband of Intelligence by Level 4 as it also give a bonus level 2 spell as well as many other benefits. For now, I probably would spend 1000gp on a pearl of power to get an extra first. Much more flexible than a wand.
I agree we need to work on the scroll library, and I can help the cleric make any cleric spells into scrolls. I would think Bull's Strength, Find Traps, and Augury may be useful. First level spells like Protection from evil, Shield of Faith, Magic weapon, Bless would be good on scrolls too.
I would rather not spend party funds on potions or oils. I can see buying everyone a cold iron and alchemical silver dagger and an alchemist fire. I really want to be able to buy my headband soon and don't want to spend too much on consumables, especially one shot 750 gp ones.
To increase knowledge skills can be useful -- +2 to knowledge checks now comes at +50 gp per skill in a one lb book if you can take the d4 round delay. What you don't know can kill you.
Adventurer's Chronicle Numerous volumes and editions of the Adventurer's Chronicles exist. When used as a reference (an action that typically takes 1d4 full rounds of searching the text), an Adventurer's Chronicle grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a specific Knowledge check. Each Adventurer's Chronicle grants this bonus to a different type of Knowledge, but regardless of which type that particular chronicle is focused on, the overall cost of the book remains the same. Price 50 gp; Weight 1 lb. Source Inner Sea World Guide
Arcane Family Workbook The elven predilection for becoming wizards and the social benefits that elven wizards enjoy often encourages families to dedicate themselves to wizardly studies for multiple generations. Older elven wizards take note of their own insights into the secrets of arcane magic and compile these thoughts with the ideas of earlier generations to form family workbooks. When used as a reference (an action that typically takes 1d4 full rounds of searching the text), an arcane family workbook grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a Spellcraft checks. This bonus increases to +4 if 1d4 hours are spent referencing the book. Price 300 gp; Weight 3 lbs

Stat-boosting items are great and all, but I don't really think we have the money to start thinking about them this early; just buying one belt or headband would drain our account and leave us with only 242.5 gp to spend on other things. I'm sure we'll all get them eventually but they're not really the be-all and end-all of items, in my opinion.
As I play more and more, I find that consumables are well worth their price, especially at lower levels when you don't have enough gold for the more expensive body-slot items anyways. A potion of fly or oil of daylight might seem expensive but at these low levels when we really have no other way to combat darkness or flying enemies, they can be life savers. I've seen too many fights turn sour because none of the PCs had an oil of bless weapon or oil of daylight. Even if we end up not using them right away, there may come a day when we are thankful to have them.
Telka Beast-Talker |
Jordan currently we only have "party funds". Do you want me to shift to a different treasure distribution model?
We're currently on a fully cooperative model. We could do a different model.
semi-cooperative appropriate items to the appropriate character, split the rest between a small "party fund" and the players, I keep a general eye on if someone isn't getting a fair share (I do track those metrics already)
selfish sell everything, split the loot evenly, if you want something buy it. If you have the money when we are selling something, buy it back at half price.
I kind of favor the last model for this group. We've got a slightly mercenary vibe going on here.
Telka Beast-Talker |
Separate question for DM: are we still considering prestige points/fame as a game mechanic?
If so, who do I have to schmooze with to get in good with the society ;). (Other then the Heidmarchs)
Jordan Andosano |
I said I wanted the headband by level 4, and want to think about it now and save for it. I did not suggest buying it now. I bump my INT to 20 at level 4 and then 22 INT gives an extra level 2 spell. I am happy with a pearl of power for now to recast any first level spell.
I agree in the value of consumables. Feather tokens have their place too. I would like to avoid buying potions of level 2 or more with party funds. I can see scribing scrolls for any level 2 spell we can.
So my point is too many consumables will drain our accounts and I won't have my stat boosting item by level 4. For someone single ability dependent, stat boosting items are important.
Depending on the knowledge skill and how the DM handles retraining of the affected knowledge skill, the later I buy the headband the more it will cost.
Edit: I have no problem with the model we are using. I just want to avoid making expenditures too 'short term' and not leaving funds for crucial purchases. When I adventure with someone that can wear plate armor, I want them in plate armor as soon as the party has 1500gp, it is better for everyone :-)
Hralyk the Crooked |
I also agree that consumables are a worthy investment early on, but I suggest we stick with longer-duration and utility spells rather than short-duration combat spells, unless the scroll-users are likely to not have anything more useful to do. Also, a backup CLW potion for everyone would be nice.
As far as one loot system versus another goes: from a player perspective, I prefer cooperative or semi-cooperative; the characters, however, seem to be a bit more on the semi-cooperative/selfish end of things.
As for our current loot, Hralyk will, initially, request a cold iron morningstar (to handle DR/piercing, DR/bludgeoning, and DR/cold iron), then will be looking for a masterwork falchion. Eventually, I'd like for him to have an adamantine falchion and a mithral breastplate, but I realize those are a ways off.
Jordan Andosano |
I think we are running around with a few 1000GP+ items: major artifact, mithral sword, magic ring, magic weapon.
Jordan has been thrifty (not purchasing anything) and will be scribing as many spells as the party needs at cost. At level 5 we should be able to scribe our own fly and daylight scrolls.
Maybe we set aside one third of party wealth to be for party funds/consumables and two thirds for distribution to the individuals to spend. That way at level four with WBL of about 6K Jordan will have enough for his headband.
Playing a power hungry CN character that selflessly passes on any treasure seems a little strange.
Ramenhotep the Risen |
I'll just make one little note: how would you read a scroll of daylight in supernatural darkness? Just something that most people forget. But one or two oils of daylight should be good enough for those situations, replacing them as needed.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
I'll work on levelling up. (Nice job, guys..)
In terms of crafting, I'm more than happy to work with Jordan to make a few useful scrolls (stat boosts, silence, shield of faith are all quite nice) -- might lean toward craft wand or craft wondrous.
(Though I might also just leap on Selective Channel -- excluding 1 baddie is helpful, and it'll be 2 when I pick up 14 cha next level)
In terms of scroll v. potion -- I think that scrolls end up being better for utility (buffs, utility spells, etc.) -- while potions are great for emergencies. (For instance, a potion of CLW could bring 'tyieli back into the battle, where he could have a boatload of [divine] scrolls of the same that won't help if he's sleeping...)

Doing anything fun for your build path? I'm always curious about the wacky tricks people employ in their builds :)
Jordan Andosano |
This is a nifty feat for clerics:
Sacred Summons
The minions of your divine patrons stand ready to answer your call.
Prerequisites: Aura class feature, ability to cast summon monster.
Benefit: When using summon monster to summon creatures whose alignment subtype or subtypes exactly match your aura, you may cast the spell as a standard action instead of with a casting time of 1 round.
Note your aura is that of your deity. Lawful Good makes Lantern Archons. For chaotic good you have to wait for level 9 ;-(
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
It's nifty, but not terribly helpful until I can bring in Azata (at summon 5) -- unless it's intended to apply when I drop the celestial template on summoned monsters (since they take on the type)?
Jordan Andosano |
Unfortunately it does not work with celestial templates.
I guess it could be your level 9 feat.
Anyway, Jordan should be the one summoning. Clerics have so many awesome things they can do with spells. I think Bull's Strength for Hralyk qualifies as quite awesome.
Telka Beast-Talker |
I don't think so , but one could combine it with summon good. Gets to be a lot of feats :)
Telka Beast-Talker |
Once Zeltyieli gets to level 5, paragon surge is a fun spell if you want to try out different feats. I should use it on my half-elf PFS cleric, but I never remember to take it :)
Ramenhotep the Risen |

5th: Extra Arcana (close range)
5th bonus: Endurance7th: Iron Will
And then starting at 8th level he'll start taking levels in (the new) Living Monolith, retaining his CL thanks to change in that class compared to the 3.5 one.
Also, I took a different tactic than the usual magus Shocking Grasp + Magical Lineage + Intensify Spell = max 10d6 first level touch spell. Instead, I took Magical Lineage with frostbite and then took Rime Spell this level so I've got a first level spell that does nonlethal cold damage, fatigues, and entangles. And I get multiple discharges with it, which means when I get iteratives I could potentially discharge it multiple times per round or if I miss I can two-hand my quarterstaff in subsequent rounds to finish off the discharges. Or even discharge it on multiple enemies and leave them all fatigued and entangled.
It seemed like a more interesting option than the standard SG-spamming magus. I made one of those for PFS when I first wanted to try magus and got terribly bored with it.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
For the most part, I'm thinking just being a pilgrim is different enough (light armour finesse cleric?) -- so I think I'll be keeping with the boring feasts (selective channel) for now.
Of course, the snazzy PrCs in Inner Sea Gods (like Exalted) might be fun
Telka Beast-Talker |
Giant, stiff crotchety old man with icy hands. Hmmmm...
Well, I was going to try out the dirge of doom feats from ACG.
WP focus (level 3)
Dazzling display (level 5)
Intimidating Performance (level 7)
Improved Dirge of Doom (level 9)
Greater dirge of doom (level 11)
Mix it blistering invective (because words hurt!), maybe raiment of command.
Maybe grab a howling helm? Or a maiden's helm.
It's a bit more one-trick pony then most of my builds, bit I still can do other bard things.
Ramenhotep the Risen |
Giant, stiff crotchety old man with icy hands. Hmmmm...
Hahaha! I guess I never envisioned it that way but now I won't be able to get that image out of my head.
Hralyk the Crooked |
Re: scrolls vs. potions - Hralyk will also be able to use divine scrolls, and will have spells as well, so he can back up Zeltyieli, if need be.
As far as builds go, I don't actually have a lot of plans for Hralyk later on, yet, but here are some thoughts I've had:
He'll be able to rage cycle as of level 7 (due to rage prophet levels stacking with Oracle levels to determine curse drawbacks), so if anyone knows of any particularly good 1/rage rage powers, he could use some feats to get them.
He'll probably be taking the Skill at Arms revelation at level 5, giving him proficiency in heavy armor. Throw some mithral full plate on him at that point, and with his Armor Mastery revelation, he'll still move at full speed, have a -2 Armor Check Penalty, etc.
I'm torn as to whether to spend a feat to pick up the Dance of the Blades revelation.
I'll pick up the Gore Fiend feat and make my falchion keen, to help with low rounds of rage.
I'll probably also pick up Cornugon Smash, but I doubt I'll go the whole Dazzling Display/Shatter Defenses route...unless I just run out of feats I'd prefer.
Telka Beast-Talker |
Oh don't do dazzling - we would have way too much overlap!
I think you would still need Dance of Blades to move at 30' with lame - mithral plate or regular plate. I do not believe armor mastery negates that. I might be incorrect, however.
As to rage powers:
Mighty strike? It would pair well with gore fiend. Takes level 12 though.
Most 1/rage powers seem to be parts of trees - but knockdown or impelling disarm (Champions of balance) are easy entry. I like savage dirty trick (also CoB), which is kind of 1/rage.
Eater of magic is neat - but requires superstition. Such a double edged sword...
Hralyk the Crooked |
Well, mithral would allow me to treat heavy armor as medium, and armor mastery allows me to move at full speed in medium armor, and barbarian speed increase counters the lame speed reduction, so (in theory, at least), Hralyk would still be able to move at 30' in heavy armor.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Actually, I suppose, as a worshipper of Sinashakti, it would be more "Mystery Cultist" than "Exalted". Which, to be fair, is pretty cool anyway in terms of flavour -- though I'd delay entry 'til 9th instead of 8th so I can get the Blessing of the Harrow from the Pilgrim archetype).
The ability to summon azata, boost my charisma and heal as an SLA isn't bad... and the fervor ability is nice, too... but then, the only real downside I can see is that it stops 'tyeli's channels from progressing past 4d6 -- which is less useful.
[As I said before, I was originally thinking of making a run at Harrower, but since I get Blessing of the Harrow from Pilgrim, it's one of those things that overlaps nicely in terms of flavour, but mechanically is pure duplication].
Anyhow, I'm levelled. I've got Selective Channel as a feat at the moment -- I'm still rolling that around in my head (especially if I do run for Cultist, where my channels are a little less useful).
Telka Beast-Talker |
I believe retraining is available, if you choice doesn't sit well with you.
There is also the Divine Scion available, if you haven't seen that class.
On a different note: do you mind if we sell the feather fall ring? A lot of our loot is currently tied up in it.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Not at all. I think it makes sense-- I believe the intent was only to use it until we had a chance to sell it.
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
Fly automatically feather falls when dispelled. (It's a nice addition).
Telka Beast-Talker |
I am going with the semi-cooperative model. 20% to the party, everyone gets an even share of the remainder.
I sold the ring of feather falling
Hralyk
You already have a cold iron morningstar (party funds).
agile breastplate (half party, half personal)
mwk. falchion (personal funds)
531.48 gp
Jordan
1 scroll of prot. versus evil (Party Funds)
1 scroll of magic weapon (Party Funds)
Cost to scribe magic weapon into Jordan's grimoire (Party Funds)
1,106.48 gp
Ramenhotep
1 alchemist fire (Party Funds)
1 oil of bless weapon (Party Funds)
1,106.48 gp
Telka Beast-Talker
1,106.48 gp
Zeltyieli
1 alchemist fire (Party Funds)
1 oil of bless weapon (Party Funds)
1,106.48 gp
Telka Beast-Talker |
Telka will use her share of the loot to pick up two scrolls of invigorate, two scrolls of remove fear.
She'll pay for Jordan to write comprehend languages into his spellbook and then have him make her a scroll.
Ramenhotep the Risen |
This is just a reminder that I'll be leaving for my honeymoon in New Zealand tomorrow and will be gone until January 13. Hopefully I will have time to check in a few times while I'm gone but if I'm holding things up go ahead and bot me. I'll be back in full force in mid January! Thanks everyone!
Zeltyieli Alikathesu |
I believe 'Tyieli picked up the +1 bladed scarf ... Which would easy most of "his" split.
Jordan Andosano |
Let Jordan keep the ring until he upgrades his equipment.
A sack of gold won't save him, but the ring may.
Also add five tangle foots kept for Jordan. They are half priced. He will get create pit next level. Pitted and stuck is bad for his foes.
Then 10gp shovels need to be purchased for spell components.
